June 24, 2018– Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the birth

of John the Baptist. There were a lot of signs and

wonders that accompanied his birth so that even their

relatives and neighbors asked: “What sort will this

child be?”

As a rule, the church celebrates the feast of a

saint once a year, on the anniversary of the saint’s

death. In the case of John the Baptist we celebrate his

death as well as his birth. John is the only saint after

Christ whose birth we celebrate with a solemn feast.

His very name JOHN, which means, “God has

shown favor,” tells us everything that we need to

know about John the Baptist. He did not only bear his

name, rather, he lived up to it as he walked faithfully

in the path that leads to the goal that God had set for

him and that is to prepare the way for Jesus and be a

courageous witness to Jesus.

Let us then ask the help of John so that we too can live up to our names, to live up to our name as Christians, by being courageous witnesses of God’s kindness, compassion and joy by what we say and do. Amen.

From Fr. Steve

The teachers, staff, and families share in a common goal for the children and that makes Star of the Sea an amazing place to be!” Mr. And Mrs. A Annual Appeal. Sweet Blessings: This special ministry outreaches to our Virginia Beach community, our service partners, and to other locations to show our gratitude for their service. Some of the sites that have received a sweet gesture of cakes and treats from us have been our local police precincts, fire stations, EMS, hospitals, and senior centers. Two of our volunteers, Joann Armistead and Shirley Darnauer, have been able to be our mobile ‘Sweet Blessings’ angels. They have covered deliveries to the local Sentara hospitals and senior centers during the past year. Joann has often commented about the amazement from nurses especially when we share a special cake or dessert with them and simply tell them “Thank you” for their work. She notes that they are often speechless and tearful because we thought of them. Shirley has had similar experiences as she meets seniors and shares a Sweet Blessing dessert with them. Shirley says that it is really a “blessing” when the seniors light up with a smile and feel so happy for the brief visit and company. Most of the treats that we share come from our community partner, Sugar Plum Bakery! Please consider helping Sugar Plum Bakery, located at 353 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451, as they are currently participating in the Dawn Food Products sponsored “The Sweetest Bakery In America” contest! This contest ends on July 31st and the bakery with the most votes gains national and local recognition to highlight that they are the Sweetest Bakery in America! Vote in person at Sugar Plum Bakery or you can vote for “Sugar Plum Bakery” online once per day at https://sweetestbakeryinamerica.com. Sugar Plum Bakery is a non-profit bakery offering desserts, along with training & employment to disabled people. Sugar Plum Bakery has been a partner with our SOS Social Outreach for many years and has been so generous with their donations of sweet desserts and doughnuts, that we are able to share with our guests on all of our operating days!

Peace & Justice: Pray for peace in our families, our wor ld, and in our hearts! During the month of June, our Diocese of Richmond encourages Refugee Awareness as par t of our Social Ministry effor ts. Refugees are “individuals who have fled their countries of origin and who meet the United Nations’ criteria of having a ‘well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” (www.usccb.org/about/migration-and-refugee-services www.sharejourney.org) Refugees often have suffered great loss such as loss of their homes, livelihoods, possessions, family members, and they need assistance starting over in a new country. Their initial needs are many: food, clothing, shelter, employment, language training, and orientation to a new community and culture. In recent years, the U.S. has accepted between 50,000 to 75,000 refugees per year. Saint Joseph and the Blessed Mother Mary had to escape to Egypt with their newborn son, Jesus, because the paranoid and jealous King Herod wanted to kill our infant Lord. Jesus, himself, lived as a refugee because His own land was not safe. Refugees, therefore, are close to our Lord’s heart. Learn more about challenges that face our global brothers and sisters at Share the Journey (www.sharejourney.org) Pray for all refugees and migrants, that barriers of fear and suspicion are broken down and bridges of understanding and hospitality are built so we can help one another. Migrant Ministry Hello everyone! It is Migrant Ministry time again and I would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the last almost 20 years! As the season is getting under way, the items we are in greatest need of are sheets, towels and toiletries. We are looking forward to meeting up with old friends on the Eastern Shore and sharing their stories with you. As always please keep the workers and our volunteers in your prayers. Thank you!
