Bureau joined a select list of just 115 visitor bureaus in the U.S. when it was awarded accreditation from the Destination Marketing Association Program (DMAP).

DMAP is an international accreditation program developed by the Washington, D.C.- based Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) and a leader in defining quality and performance issues in destination marketing.

In earning the DMAP accreditation, the HCCVB is now one of the nation’s destination marketing organiza-tions (DMOs) able to communicate to their commu-nity, buyers and potential visitors that their DMO has attained a significant measure of excellence.

DMAP accreditation standards cover a variety of

topics including governance, finance, management, human resources, technology, visitor services, group services, sales, communications, membership, brand management, destination development, research/market intelligence, innovation and stakeholder relationships/

The Hamilton County CVB is a non-profit organiza-tion that manages the county’s tourism development program. It works closely with the Hamilton County Tourism Commission and the Hamilton County Council to support a dynamic environment for its “eight great towns,” which include Noblesville.

“This accreditation is validation for a staff, board and commission who are passionate about both community and tourism development,” said HCCVB Executive Director Brenda Myers.

Some of the kids in the group will attempt to scale a 40-foot wall, climb the steep “Cardiac Hill” or take on other summer camp challenges at the Bradford Woods facility in Martinsville, Ind.,

Many traditional summer camps cannot accommodate children with physical disabilities. Since 1955, Camp Riley has helped empower more than 12,000 Hoosier children with physical disabilities gain the self-confidence

and skills necessary to live their lives to the fullest. Riley Hospital for Children staff ensures all medical

needs are met so campers are able to horseback ride, participate in organized sports and experience other traditional camp activities.

Eligible children ages 8 to 18 can attend one of six Camp Riley sessions each summer. This year, ap-proximately 220 campers will come from all over Indiana and five additional states. students but the Noblesville Board of School Trustees have been busy overseeing several administration changes this summer, including the ap-proval and appointments of Kyle Barrentine as principal at Noblesville Intermediate School and Ryan Rich as prin-cipal at Noblesville Middle School.

Jeff Bragg is returning to the school district’s central admin-istration office as director of operations, a position he had held until moving to the in-termediate school as principal a year ago. He will oversee the construction of a new elemen-tary school and other building projects that will begin in the next few months.

In addition, Jeff Bryant, an assistant principal at NHS, will move to the freshman campus as the lead admin-istrator there. Andy Swickheimer, for-merly the dean of students at the fresh-man campus, will replace Bryant as assistant principal at the main campus.

He came to Noblesville Schools in 1999 as an eighth-grade social studies teacher and became an as-sistant principal at the middle school in 2004. He moved to the high school two years later to prepare for the opening of the freshman campus. Bryant joined the Noblesville High School staff as an English teacher in 2000 and has served the school as an assistant prin-cipal since 2006. Swickheimer came to Noblesville as a high

school social studies teacher in 1999 and served the past school year as a dean of students at the freshman campus.

Bragg joined the intermediate school staff in 1996 as a physical education teacher. He left Noblesville in 2002 for an administrative position in Tipton, and returned to NIS as principal in 2004. He was named director of op-erations in January 2007 but returned to NIS amid budget cuts in 2009. His salary will be paid from the Capital Projects Fund and will not impact the district’s General Fund.

Current in NoblesvilleAlthough no emerald ash borers

(EAB) have been found in Noblesville, the City of Noblesville is partnering with Valent Professional Products for the Legacy Tree Project in a preventa-tive treatment program for avoid-ing the spread of EAB. There have been two confirmed cases in Fishers, and this program’s goal is to pro-tect as many ash trees as possible in Noblesville from the EAB. The EAB is a devastating and invasive insect.

Treatment began this week with approximately 200 street trees in Monterey Village, Pinehurst Village, Sommerwood, and Forest Park being treated. An insecticide will be in-jected directly into the soil at the base of the ash tree. The selected ash

trees will be treated once a year be-tween late May and early July for five years. This program is being done at no cost to the City of Noblesville . Valent Professional Products will cover all costs associated with the project, including application by certi-fied professionals from Davey Tree of Indianapolis .

Noblesville is one of only 12 munic-ipalities taking part in the Legacy Tree Project across five states. “We look forward to working with our partner cities over the next five years to help them protect their ash trees,” said Dr. Joe Chamberlin, regional field devel-opment manager for Valent.

It is our position that Exit 10 off I-69 needs a gas station. With the boom of housing and commerce, Hamilton Town Center and Verizon Wireless Music Center has brought to Noblesville, citizens can find anything they might possibly need, except a place to fuel up.

The trendy setting full of business suites and shops, Exit 10 has quickly earned potential to be one of the more popular stops for motorist com-muting north and south along I-69. With a variety of attractions available to travelers right off the exit, an upper end establishment to fill up the car would fit comfortably into the scenery while providing for a huge demand to the hundreds of shoppers and employees visiting the area every day.

With all the steps that have been taken to make Exit 10 the place consumers look forward to visiting, a fuel station would assist more in the effort by attracting those who are just looking for a place to fill up. With gas stations along 90 percent of the undeveloped exits in the country, a place to fuel up at Exit 10 would be convenient and keep the tax dollars at home.

Got gas? Do it or we willIt is our position that the recent move by Gov-

ernor Mitch Daniels and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to again delay the long-promised and much-post-poned improvements on US 31 across Hamilton County is as much as killing the project. Promised more than a decade ago, plans to improve the stretch of highway to limited-access comes not only from its important economic posi-tion – much commerce traverse the irksome path and even more productivity is wasted by those idly consuming both fuel and time – but also from the loss of life claimed by overtaxed and under-designed intersections along the route.

Speed, volume and design have all been taken into account through several studies, designs and redesigns over the past several years. And, INDOT has promised action with each one. Yet, other than keeping those folks employed, very little action has occurred. It is time for political leaders to live up to their promises. Mitch Daniels and his administration committed that this project would be well underway in 2011. If he cannot get the job done, both Carmel and Westfield have joined in offering to take over the project and do the work directly. The State should let them.

Call it the 12 ½-mile, 3 ¼-hour, five-course, $300 per couple, all for-a-good-cause meal. From the Courthouse Square to Westfield and back.

Here’s the deal: for $300 a couple or $150 per single, the first 50 people who register can enjoy a five-course, progressive dinner at Keltie’s in Westfield and four of Noblesville’s finest dining spots – transportation provided. Bryan Glover from Mr. G’s Liquor will pair a wine with each course. Call 518-1777 for reservations.

It’s the fund-raising brainchild of Paul Wood, marketing director at the 60-Plus Club, home of The Living Room, Hamilton County’s only adult daycare center. He wanted something other than a golf tournament or the typical dinner fundraiser, and decided to tap into area’s stellar restaurant market for some help.

The money raised goes to assisting the more than 4,500 sufferers of Alzheimer’s/dementia and their caregivers in Hamilton County by providing an adult day center where the person suffering can have supervised, homey care, while the caregiver gets a much-needed break. The 60-Plus Club is at 1101 S. 10th St.

The event is July 14 and it starts at 5:30 p.m.

with diners boarding a Janus Industries bus at the Huntington Bank parking lot at the corner of 10th and Conner for a ride to Westfield for some of Keltie Domina’s amazing appetizers. Singing “Wheels on the Bus” is encouraged.

Then, it’s back to the bus for a return trip downtown but not without stopping at Lutz’s Steak House for their remarkable Spanish black bean soup – and more wine.

Back downtown, the group will be seated at the Asian Grill for its house salad of shrimp, mandarin oranges and pine nuts – and more wine – before walking a few doors south for the main course -- Matteo’s famous chicken marsala and pasta. Did we mention the fine wines from Mr. G’s?

The evening ends with a stroll around the corner to The Hamilton for its signature Hummingbird Cake and an after-dinner wine.

By this time, a few laps around the Square might be in order before returning home.

How do we have a thoughtful conversa-tion about race in this fine country? And, who has standing to discuss the issue? Many years ago, I was enjoying a seminar in law school (now the Michael Maurer School of Law – thank you, Jane and Mickey) on the topic of race and the law. It was taught by our Constitutional law professor, himself a black American. A member of the class asserted that only whites could be racist. The view was that racism suggested the perceived superior-ity of that particular race over all others. The facts that many whites did not participate in slavery, were from countries that never partici-pated in it, and that many Africans of all races have owned slaves for centuries were not rel-evant because the argument presupposed that racism was not a product of slavery but rather that slavery was a product of racism.

The debate that ensued was one of the most interesting that I recall from my years at the

study of law. Sadly, the discourse was not a free one. Prejudices based largely in appear-ance meant that a comment from one would be severely discounted and a remark from an-other would be dismissed in the wholesale.

If these thinking, young, and engaged folks were unable to find common ground even in the law, how will we find it today? President Obama suggests we talk it out over beer. Others believe that race will become irrelevant through implementation of forced ideals of social justice. I certainly don’t have the answer. And, I know that the space allotted barely gets to the point. Isn’t it best if we look to our own hearts to determine how we will be labeled? And then, let others think what they want? Aren’t they going to anyway?

Bocko, entitled “She’s no dirty hippie-type; makes her own deodorant to prove it” (Feb. 23) to be flattering. I appreciated the fact that she had written it in because we talk about saving our environment and surroundings, but we still do

things that pollute it. Making your own deodor-ant is actually beneficial, not only to the environ-ment, but to our bodies. Using unnatural deodor-ants and antiperspirants are proven to cause Alzheimer’s disease and various types of cancer.

Editor,I read the article “Tumblr a good blog site for

artistically inclined” (March 2) by Hanna Davis, and I agreed completely with what she had to say about Facebook, but I would also like to enlighten people about it, too. Facebook is a social network that has not only those ridiculously cheesy quiz-zes and fan clubs but has pictures, videos, chat,

email, music, walls to comment on, flares and mind-challenging games. For family and friends who rarely get to visit each other, Facebook is a way of keeping in touch with each other, seeing recent photos or to catch up on history.

School’s out for many in our midst, and that’s a reason on several fronts for celebration. In one case, it brings a bag of mixed emotions. We’re losing a 45-year veteran of Noblesville Schools with the recent retirement of Elaine Irvin. "It has been exciting to witness the tre-mendous growth in Noblesville Schools,” she stated. “The educational support freely given by principals and staff has been unwavering. The bottom line, however, is the children, who need our care, respect, life lessons, and knowl-edge. Please give them a smile and a hug for me." Those were said to be in plentiful supply when Irvin held court. And it all began as a student teacher at Conner Elementary School as a Ball State University student. After gradu-ation, she launched her teaching career at the former Third Ward School at South Tenth Street and Christian Avenue, and then it was on to the new experiences at North, Forest Hill, Stony Creek, Hinkle Creek, Hazel Dell, White River and Noble Crossing elementary schools. A note that crossed our desks last week alerted us to Irvin's best memories of teaching in Noblesville, and those are of meeting and working with new staff members and being a part of the dedication of six elementary build-

ings. Earning the honor of being one of the Top Ten Educators in Noblesville in 1986 also was a highlight. "Noblesville elementary schools have been my extended family and support system for more than three-quarters of my life. I will sorely miss everyone," she stated. We believe that gate swings both ways, and we wish her all the best the next phase of her life! Now she will have ample additional time to devote to her family, volunteering at her church and at her grandsons' schools, gardening, and pursuing her many other hobbies. The opportunity to do so is richly deserved.

I wanted to share with you the weight-loss plan some friends of mine organized for this summer. They were sitting around a picnic table over Memorial Day Weekend, eating brats and burg-ers, and they got to talking about how they all wanted to get in better shape. So they decided to hold their own “Biggest Loser” competition. I figured a lot of you are in the same boat and could maybe benefit from their idea. Here’s the deal:

Each participant has agreed to ante $300, to be reimbursed only if his or her weight loss goal is reached. They have three months to shed the lard, beginning June 1 and ending Labor Day, with weigh-ins only twice, bookending the summer. Their goals range from 10 to 30 pounds, depending on the amount of fatness presently on their bodies. Whoever attains her weight loss goal gets to split the forfeited loot of those who did not.

That’s it! But when you think about it, the plan in brilliant. Had I needed to drop a few pounds, this would have totally mo-tivated me. But alas, I was gifted with the skinny-minny genes of my mom (who is actually shrinking as the years go by – her wed-ding dress from 40 years ago still fits!) and an incurable disease that requires stimulant medication (hypothyroidism gets you the benefits of Synthroid, a metabolic booster). And not to sell myself short, I work out regularly and eat OK already. But for most of my friends, this will be a challenge to not only lose weight but to make the change to a healthier lifestyle. And I honestly think they all have a shot at succeeding. Why?

First off, summer is the perfect time. The days are longer, so squeezing in walks and runs are much easier, and because there is no threat of ice or snow, most days are doable. Plus, something about the sun compels you to get outside and do something. You

almost feel guilty watching TV and chowing down a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey (which I did the other day in a mo-mentary state of depression. Soooo good.) Furthermore, grocery stores and markets are flooded with local fresh produce, making the choice to eat healthier more realistic and economical. Finally, bathing suits and arm-baring tees offer their own special kind of incentive for shedding the gristle – the not-so-popular, but highly effective embarrassment factor. We all want to look good in skimpy clothing!

To accommodate everyone’s busy lives, there are no group activities scheduled, and each participant can design their own weight-loss plan. One of my friends is doing P90X, a DVD pro-gram that combines aerobics, weight training, and diet to achieve results in ninety days. His goal is 20 pounds. Another is simply trying to walk five times a week and not eat seconds. She also wants to lose 20 pounds. Two older “Biggest Loser” competitors will attempt to shed those pain-in-the-arse last 10 pounds by cut-ting back on fatty foods and increasing daily activity.

They are all motivated to stick to their guns for two reasons: No one wants to lose the cash, and more importantly, no one wants to be the only one not meeting his goal. They are account-able to themselves, to their spouses and children, and to each other. So I applaud their efforts. If pounding the pavement all alone is get-ting tiresome, consider joining more than 100 of your fellow runners during the Noblesville Twilight Cross-Country Series. Starting June 22, the timed runs kick off at 6:30 p.m. and cover the Chinquapin Ridge Cross-Country Course behind White River Elementary School, 19000 Cumberland Road.

Participants can tackle either the 3-kilometer or 5-kilometer routes, which run north along a grassy path and then loop back into a wooded area with groomed trails and one memorable hill. An adjacent playground keeps kids enter-tained while the parents are hoofing it.

To keep you well-heeled, participants are en-tered into random drawings for $50 gift certifi-cates to the Runners Forum, with locations in Carmel and downtown Indianapolis.

The course is the home of the 2010 Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, Noblesville Black & Gold Hokum Karem, Hamilton County meet and 2010 Noblesville Sectional. It is named for a Chinquapin oak tree that grows in the middle of a wetlands area near the wooded trail and the log cabin.

Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate in any or all of the planned runs, which take place June 22, and July 6, 13 and

20. The cost is $5, which benefits the NHS cross-country program. For more information,

I love Noblesville. I really do. And because I love it, I’m always thinking of what I’d like to see downtown to make it better.

Friends and I have discussed many times what we’d like to see on the Square and what we’d do if we had a million magical dollars to just make it happen.

So, here we go, in no particular order:• Have a downtown Farmers Market on the

Square on a weeknight. Many people want this. Saturday mornings for our family are usually booked solid, as they are with many families. If you can’t make it one Saturday, or any Saturday, how can you get fresh, local produce from the farmers? But if there was another day and time for the market—like from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, there ya go! I just got back from rural New England where it’s common to have Farmers Markets six days a week!

• An anchor grocery store, like a Trader Joe’s or a Whole Foods. Most of my

friends shop these stores and we have to travel to Castleton or Carmel. If one of these were on the Square, we’d think we’d died and gone to heaven. Heck, an inde-pendent natural foods store would be as just awesome, if not more so.

• An independent pharmacy on the Square. I know I’m really tired of seeing those two giant drugstore chains compet-ing to see who can populate Hamilton County more densely. You know who I’m talking about. There are, I believe, only two indie drugstores left in the whole county, one of which is in downtown Westfield.

Thoughts? What would you like to see down-town? I’d love to hear your comments. I have more ideas for what I’d like to see, but I think this is a good start.

If he could, our son would spend all day every day outside. I have fair skin and a low tolerance for bugs. Our styles don’t mesh well, particularly in the summer.

Three years ago, we found a solution. Conner Prairie offers summer day camps that provide enough activities to keep the liveliest outdoor adventure seeker happy. Our son comes home tan, sweaty, tired and begging to spend the rest of the evening in the air conditioning.

I love being a mom, but I’m the first one to admit I’m not the greatest at doing things kids might enjoy. I don’t like to play “capture the flag.” I’ve never stamped leather. I don’t know how to make butter. I certainly don’t want to spend the afternoon tie-dying anything. Conner Prairie day camp offers kids the chance to experience all of this and more.

This year our son moved up an age group and is now a Trail Blazer. That means he gets to spend time on the river canoeing and tubing in addition to all the other fun stuff. My parents love to canoe. They live in an area that has several beautiful and navigable rivers.

They’ve asked to take the grandchildren every year. I stalled, worrying they wouldn’t survive a float trip. Imagine my surprise when our dinner conversation revolved around our son’s tales of piloting a canoe independently. I no longer have a viable excuse.

Our son looks so forward to camp each year. I won’t deny I enjoy the week of near solitude, but I love the program for other rea-sons, too. I love watching our son’s face light up as he recounts his day. I admire the confi-dence and independent spirit camp seems to instill. I am proud that he marches in on the first day without the slightest bit of trepida-tion and makes new friends easily.

When I was old enough to do so, I took my first steps behind the counter of the Uptown Café. A few years later, I learned to ask Mary Kay, the owner at the time, for teddy bear-shaped pancakes. She always delivered.

And when I was 14, I bucked up the courage to ask the new owner, Gordon, for a job. I showed up for an interview with the manager the following Monday. The restaurant had closed by then, and she was nowhere to be seen. I came back, and after sliding a slapdash résumé across the counter, was told I could come in on Saturday’s – and Saturday’s only – to pour coffee.

I did for two years. Except, I eventually became a bona fide waitress and occasional grill cook. And not just on Saturday’s. The restaurant stopped serving while I was still sitting in classes at school, but I spent my summers there, and put in a good amount of work. I only stopped when the restaurant fell through the holes of Gordon’s mismanagement, and had to close. I found out I’d have to find a new job while passing a newspaper box.

Diana did her best to keep the restau-rant intact, as it was during Mary Kay’s glory days. She fought to keep the juke-boxes when Gordon declared they were too old-fashioned and a waste of money. She fought to keep the prices reasonable. She fought to keep the standards on the menu.

I loved that job; I loved working for Diana, and I loved working in a place where my neighbors ate, and where I had eaten for my entire life. I loved the cheap, red pine paneling. I loved the ceil-ing’s smoke stains. I loved the torn booth

seats and grease-smeared stainless steel shelves. The Uptown was a diner, a real diner, and we liked it that way.

It didn’t have to be fancy, or cute, or even particularly clean. It just had to be predictable. Dependable. A place where people knew each other, and knew they could get a cup of coffee and bowl of oatmeal for a price they could afford.

Things have changed, and they won’t be the same anytime soon. The days of the diner are long gone in Noblesville, and we’ll have to come to terms with that. But after 75 almost con-tinuous years of being a Noblesville staple, the Uptown’s still

around. And that alone should be celebrated.Related story, Page 9.

As you wander through Noblesville Youth Baseball’s “Field of Dreams” facility you are treated to a buffet of sights, smells and sounds. Iron red baselines carve green playing fields. Fresh pop-corn and newly mown grass warm the air. Sweet clover comingles with wild chamomile and hangs on the breeze.

The distinctive ping of the aluminum bats, the sporadic cheers, and incessant infield chatter – str-r-r-ike…out! – say baseball.

But wander past one particular diamond and your senses may be stumped by something initially unidentifiable. Instead of clap-ping, hands of adult fans wave enthusiastically in the air. There’s a seeming profusion of signs and signals – not just by the umpires – but between coaches, parents and players.

It’s quiet. Not a peep emanates from either the dugout or the stands. Welcome to a silent world where the Mets, a team of third-graders from the Indiana School for the Deaf, play America’s pastime with the same contrast of intensity and absent-mindedness that any kids their age muster.

“Those kids are as normal as you can imagine,” said their coach, Leo Willey. “They don’t live with difficulties. We are always faced with challenges, but, in fact, they are just the same challenges that YOU face.”

Having missed last season, Mets are focused on building basic skills, “These kids have worked so hard. The record isn’t that im-portant,” explains Willey.

Many of these players will feed into the middle school and varsity teams at the School for the Deaf. Until recently, they had teams in Fishers, but moved to Noblesville two years ago.

“The mothers of the kids suggested that NYB was an ideal place to establish a team,” said Willey. “The people at NYB have

been very friendly, very welcoming and very accepting, specifi-cally the commissioners, coaches, field director and umpires.”

Unlike hearing players who listen to a coach’s instruc-tions while keeping an eye on play and hands in gloves or on bats, these players need their eyes and hands free for all communications.

As for communication with the hearing teams, texting and a paper and pen are a must. Willey has found the other teams and umpires to be quite accommodating.

Willey says he couldn’t have formed the team without support from parents or without the aid of assistant coach John Hazelett and team mom Jennifer Kulmacz.

“We raise each others’ children,” said Willey. “That’s how it

really works in our community.” Although all current Mets are from deaf families, deaf children

from hearing families are welcome to join. Deaf teams start as young as T-ball and mixed hearing and deaf teams exist in the Babe Ruth league. For information, email [email protected] or go to www.noblesvillebaseball.org.

The grumbling has subsided. The “silly” Mega-Miller breakfast sandwich is a mega success. And Uptown Café owner Kristie Whitesell is seeing her vision come true: a café with a great location and a good cup of coffee - even if that cup of coffee is a little pricier than that to which loyal Uptown customers were accustomed.

Whitesell acknowledged the initial “struggle” she had with the former regulars adjusting to the new pricing and her healthier, eclectic menu.

“People weren’t used to paying $2.25 for coffee,” said the 31-year-old Whitesell, who reopened the storied café nearly two years ago at the corner of Conner and 8th Street. “But that’s one thing I had to have – a good cup coffee.” (It is roasted by Harvest Café in Indianapolis)

“And we had to raise prices because of quality of the food. You set your prices so you don’t go out of business like it did before.”

Recent Noblesville move-ins Karel and Linda Hanhart had no issues with the menu or its cost during their first visit.

“I hadn’t had a breakfast like that in a long time,” said Karel. “My bill was $15 for two which is what you pay at most places for a good breakfast.”

“We’ll definitely be back,” added Linda.Most breakfast and lunch items range from $6-$8. And you

can still get a cheeseburger – Angus beef, of course - but no fries.“We don’t fry anything here,” said Whitesell, who does most of the

food prep and much of it from scratch. “I like fries but I don’t like the smell and I don’t like to clean it. I just don’t like the atmosphere.”

Whitesell’s menu philosophy is simple: the food she serves is the food she would eat. Like the roasted turkey and swiss on

wheatberry, stacked with avocado, spinach, cucumber, tomato and sweet jalapeno mayonnaise.

“That sandwich is me in a nutshell,” she said. “Everything on the menu is a reflection of me.”

Even the Uptown’s traditional biscuits and gravy, a truckload of sausage gravy on a humongous, made-from-scratch biscuit?

“I was up in arms about that one,” confessed Whitesell, who prefers to serve her own fruit- and nut-filled granola. “But it has a big following.”

Probably not as big as the Uptown’s signature sandwich – the Mega-Miller: egg, cheese, ham, bacon, hash browns, spinach, tomatoes and jalapeno jelly stacked between two jumbo biscuits.

“I put it on the menu because I thought it was silly,” she said of

the sandwich, named for the Noblesville High School Millers. “I wanted to see it if would take off, and it has.”

Growing up in Warsaw, Ind., Whitesell liked to cook and bake but had little interest in running a café. While working for an en-gineering firm, the Purdue geology graduate decided to attend a culinary school in Chicago. Back in Indiana she worked part-time in the kitchens at Dunaway’s and Scholar’s Inn in Indianapolis before landing at Woody’s Library Restaurant in Carmel, where a waitress friend encouraged her to open her own place. The friend told her about the vacant Uptown.

Built in 1883, the two-story brick building served several busi-nesses before becoming a café in 1932. Locals remember it best as a reputable cafe operated by Paul and Mary Kay Lynch before it failed under new ownership.

“Although the place was a mess, I was excited because I un-derstood what it meant to the people of Noblesville and what it could be again,” said Whitesell. “There’s a lot of history here. It just needed some updating.”

She leased the restaurant and upstairs living space from owner Jay Merrell, CEO of Industrial Dielectrics in Noblesville, and, with lots of help from her family, transformed it into the 40-seat café it is today – clean, bright, friendly and retro. She will cel-ebrate two years in business Aug. 21.

“The Uptown was your typical, cliché corner café, an iconic sort of place,” said Merrell. “Kristie has given it a different dy-namic. A lot of Uptown old-timers may not come back, but there are a lot of Uptown ‘new-timers’ who wouldn’t have set foot in the place before.”

Parasites could be a source of your health problems.

You may assume parasite infections in humans are only a problem in underdeveloped countries but they also pose a serious problem in the United States. Americans today are host to more than 130 different kinds of parasites, ranging from microscopic organisms to the tapeworm.

As someone who specializes in parasite infes-tation and elimination, I can tell you that I see it much too often. Medical doctors have a dif-ficult time diagnosing parasite infestation since the parasites are not only in the intestinal tract but they migrate into other organs via blood and lymph glands.

Parasites enter the body through the pores of the skin; by ingesting raw or uncooked food that contain eggs, larvae, or spores; by bath-ing, swimming, or drinking water with eggs or larvae, and by eating fruits and veggies that have not been properly washed. Exposure is promi-nent in daycare centers, nursing homes, rehab institutions and medical facilities. Exposure is

also from dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and contami-nated water and food supplies.

Symptoms can include bloating or gas, fatigue, malnourishment, allergies, unclear thinking, weight gain or loss and an overall unwell feeling. Allergies can be one of the first symptoms.

Worms can cause trauma by perforating the intestines, the circulatory system, the lungs, the liver, the lymph glands, and even the brain. They eat their way through your organs.

The parasite must be detected, eliminated, and the body must be repaired. It is important to detect which parasite, to stay on a parasite purge program for approximately six weeks (be-cause of incubation periods), wait six weeks and repeat the purge.

Ridding your body of parasites can be done without harming the rest of your body and it may be just the answer to your troubling health problems.

Recently, I shared a link from a campaign on Facebook. I had received an e-mail around a political issue in which the goal was to get a petition signed. The e-mail was sent to 3,500 people. With each send, the open rate of the email decreased. The number of visitors to the companion Web site also slowly dwindled as did the number of people signing the petition.

After a month, I clicked the “share” button in the email message I had received. I shared the message, which dropped a link with a comment, into my Facebook account. I’ve only got 150 friends in Facebook, and I’m not active with this network. Still, I had 16 “friends” comment on the link and comment on my simple mes-sage that accompanied the link, “If you live in Indiana, you should check this out.”

All this activity occurred within 30 minutes of sharing the link. All ages responded, from my 21-year-old sister-in-law to my 76-year-old father. It’s also worth noting that not all of the comments were positive. Two people disagreed and presented an opposing viewpoint.

The next day I checked the Web site statistics and during the hour I shared the link, which was several days after I got the e-mail, there was a spike of 10 additional unique visits and

10 new signatures on the petition. Sixteen of my friends made comments and 10 visited and signed. All this activity sparked by one 42-year-old sharing a link in one social network where he has 150 friends. What if 50 people did that? What if instead of sending an email to 3,500 people we simply asked the 250 people affiliated with the campaign to share the link in all their social networks?

That is “the network effect.” People want to connect with people and they believe other people most. A first-person voice is always pre-ferred to a company message. And while not everyone is interested in social networks, these networks and the network effect can’t be ig-nored. Everyone’s heard of them and that alone makes them influential.

Facebook for me is a lot like church. I don’t go there as often as I should and I’m certainly not as active as I should be, but it appears I still have a relationship with the people I know there.

Having spent a week-end in Chicago enjoy-ing copious amounts of wonderful food and drink, this week’s offer-ing will be my favorite dish from my visit there.

This open-faced sandwich is served at the Gage Restaurant in downtown Chicago. It is a sinfully layered brioche, roasted beef brisket and cheese sand-wich with a touch of tart green apple. The apple serves to cut through the flavors of the aged Swiss cheese and the brisket, and adds a fresh, crunchy flare to the sandwich.

Never underestimate the power of a great combination of tart fruit, roasted meat and an aged cheese. It’s an extremely versatile combina-tion which has survived eras in history from the croque monsieur to the Grecian gyros.

Roasting a full-sized beef brisket at home takes about an hour and a half, at 350 degrees.

Make sure to baste it often with its own deli-cious juices.

Serve this with a side of your favorite barbe-cue sauce and a stout beer.

“A plate can be made with your knowledge, or it can be made with your heart,” according to Terrell Gray, owner of Queso Blanco, an authentic Mexican restaurant in the heart of Westfield. Terrell and his wife Yolanda started the restaurant in 2007. Although there are several other Mexican restaurants in the area, Terrell and Yolanda believe they have some-thing special to offer: “Mexican food with an authentic homemade flavor, as if you were dining with friends in Mexico.” Yolanda brings her knowledge of Mexican cuisine from Oaxaca, a city famous for its cheeses. In fact, the name of the restaurant means “White Cheese,” a smooth, creamy, mild cheese found throughout Mexico. Fajitas are a delicious choice for an entrée, but make sure to leave room for a banana chimichanga, their “best dessert,” ac-cording to Terrell.

many people are served (A whole brisket is roughly 2 1/2 pounds.)

• 1 green apple,• 1 block of aged Swiss cheese. (Another option

is sliced provolone or even mozzarella.1 loaf of brioche bread Directions:1. Roast brisket at 350 degress for 1 to 1 ½

hours. When the brisket appears to “string

apart” and the meat is toasted at the edges, it is done.

2. Slice and pile the brisket atop two pieces of thickly sliced brioche.

3. Top the meat with the thin slices of green apple.

4. Pile the cheese on top of the apple.5. Place the sandwiches on cookie sheets and

crank the oven up to 450 degrees. Put the sandwiches in until the cheese has melted and started to bubble.

In the last years of his life, the great Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy was the subject of his own religion/cult. He died not at his comfortable rustic home but at a remote railway station.

These two historical facts are the jumping-off point for «The Last Station,» a fictionalized ac-count of Tolstoy›s last months.

It's quite doubtful that Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), the leader of the Tolstoyans, actually sent a young disciple (James McAvoy) to spy on the writer›s family. Or that Tolstoy›s wife, Sofya, was quite the raging cauldron of anger and self-pity that Helen Mirren portrays her to be.

Tolstoy himself is something of a minor player in his own story. He›s played with sly wit and veiled egotism by Christopher Plummer. Late in life, Tolstoy came to reject the comforts

his riches had earned his family, and embraced a pastoral philosophy based on love and com-munal property.

Sofya, though, sees his desire to name the Tolstoyan movement as the main beneficiary in his will as an abandonment of their nearly 50 years of marriage.

As unlikely as writer/director Michael Hoffman›s version of events is, it does make for a wonderful chance for this talented cast to fume and weep and otherwise emote expansively.

Students at Harvard discovered that just a few ingredients, such as garlic and chopped fresh rosemary, lend a heady fragrant aroma to a humble lamb chop. An instant-read thermometer is crucial for determining when to remove the lamb from the grill (from 140 degrees for rare to 170 degrees for well done), since doneness is a matter of personal preference.Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 chop)

ingredients: • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh

rosemary• 1 teaspoon olive oil• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided• 1 garlic clove, minced• 4 (4-ounce) lamb loin chops,

trimmed• 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper• Cooking spray

Directions:1. Combine rosemary, oil, 1/4 teaspoon

salt, and garlic; rub mixture evenly over both sides of lamb. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Even as kids chant “no more school, no more books,” teachers send home packets of pages to complete, and publishers sell workbooks that aim to keep students in top form over the summer.

Without reinforcement, students do tend to lose some of their facility and access to informa-tion they’ve learned over the school year. But if your child resists formal summer homework, there are opportunities to incorporate reading and math in the course of everyday life. • If your child is preschool age, take a nice

thick paintbrush to the pool. During breaks from swimming, make a game of drawing shapes and letters with water on the cement. On a rainy day, they’ll have fun writing with their fingers in shaving cream on a smooth surface. Take every op-portunity to read aloud to your child, and count things out loud together as well.

• Older kids will be working on math facts. Managing an allowance is a good tool for this. Trips to the pool concession stand and buying treats from the ice cream truck present opportunities to calculate smaller amounts and use multiplication to figure

taxes. • Kids who resist reading books for plea-

sure may enjoy reading magazines about sports or hobbies. Rainy summer days are a chance to break out the board and card games. Math, planning, and strategy are fundamental to many of these.

• Cooking is a great activity for kids at any time. Reading, math, science, nutrition and practical life skills can all be tailored to the age and interest of your children. Let them choose a favorite food or meal to help prepare. The more they feel a part of the process, the more eager they will be to be involved. Reading and measuring are more appealing when they get a chocolate cake for their efforts.

Some say knowledge is power, but I have found that knowledge – especially new-found knowledge in the area of family history – is motivation. Every time I attend a genealogy class, workshop, discussion or conference, I am renewed and ready to resume my searching.

With that in mind, I recommend attend-ing such an event this summer. For those who cannot plan a full-blown genealogy vacation, a conference will do nicely. Conveniently, the Midwestern Roots Family History and Genealogy Conference is coming soon and takes place right in our own back yard.

Themed “Migration Then and Now”, the conference will be at the Indianapolis Marriott East Aug. 6 and 7 with pre-conference activi-ties Aug. 5. Hosted by the Indiana Historical Society, the event will feature more than 30 presentations by national and regional experts and range from topics such as immigration, mi-gration and ethnic history to research methods, technology and DNA.

Pre-conference events include a writing work-shop, computer labs, genealogy library assistant workshop and an evening panel discussion on migration. Daily session breaks and extended

lunch hours will allow ample opportunity to visit an exhibit hall and find the latest resources from national, regional and local family history exhibitors. (Exhibition hall hours are Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Conference sessions are varied and designed to help participants locate records that will lead them on the path of their ancestors. Attendees will learn about the many types of resources that can answer the questions about their fam-ily’s history and find out how those records have migrated to new technology.

I am a Luddite living in the 21st Century. I’m opposed to technology. A Luddite is someone who rejects new technology just because it’s new.

And I’m not talking about things like thumb drives, digital cameras and smart phones. I am that person who needs tech support for a kitchen utensil. You read that correctly. Not an appliance, a utensil.

Recently, I was confounded by salad tongs. I could not get them to expand and retract. I pulled on them, dropped them on the floor, but to no avail. It was my brother-in-law who showed me how to operate them.

Don’t even get me started on my salad spin-ner. I had to be shown how to use that twice.

But I’m in good – if not very lively – com-pany. You see, in the 18th century, an English weaver named Ned Ludd, protesting the influ-ence of machinery on his career, destroyed a knitting frame.

In the 19th century, a whole movement, call-ing themselves Luddites, took up his cause, protesting the replacement of tradesmen with

machines all over England. It didn’t end well. There were losses on both sides of the technol-ogy divide. Machines were smashed; smashers were executed.

So, for the sake of avoiding escalation of my personal cold war, I’ve refrained from smashing machines, and they have refrained from termi-nating me.

As a writer, you’d think I’d ally myself with amazing devices like digital tape recorders and laptops that can make my life easier.

But I didn’t start this battle; technology fired the first shot. I’m only defending my ego. And until technology sues for peace, there can be no detente.

I came to depend on those salad tongs. I relied on their compact versatility, but since a recent visit from my mom, they’re missing in action. Is that the behavior of ally or enemy? You tell me.

During the early months of summer, a hosta enthusiast might think: Am I gardening? Or feeding slugs?

Unlike feeding birds, feeding slugs is rather disheartening. Large holes in the delicate leaves of hostas absolutely spoil their appearance. Funny how the size of the holes is directly pro-portionate to the size of each fat and happy slug in your garden, huh?

Hostas thrive in a shady, moist environment, as do slugs. And because their leaves are so close to the soil surface, they’re extremely susceptible to damage.

Through the night, slugs feed their slimy way through our gardens and that makes it hard to hand pick them because gardeners are sleeping. Some people swear by jar lids filled with beer sunk into the soil surface, but I can’t help think-ing “Waste beer on dreadful slugs? Why should they have all the fun?”

Or, I’ve heard using a vinegar solution twice in May, which kills young slugs. But I’ve found that the key to slug-free hostas is the careful selection of resistant varieties. Some varieties resist damage and it’s all in the substance of the leaf.

Note that some hosta leaves are more sub-

stantial than other, more papery-leaved hostas. There is a distinct difference.

Blue-leaf hostas, which are really a gray-green color, (gardeners love to say blue when it’s clear-ly not, like we’re colorblind) typically have a thicker, more substantial leaf. Some great blues are Elegans, Halcyon and Love Pat, all of which resist slug damage.

Blue hostas prefer denser shade than yellow leaf hostas, which can actually tolerate quite a bit of sun. Several yellow hostas have sub-stantial leaves like Sum and Substance. See, substance is even in the name. Also check out Sunpower. You’ll be pleased.

Besides keeping slugs at bay, these hostas are a carefree and hardy garden plant. You can divide and share them, and some of them have incred-ibly fragrant flowers. Look to the large white flowers for fragrance, as the lavender flowers are less fragrant.

And enjoy gardening again…without feeding the slugs.

Tonka is a 3-year-old male white American bulldog mix. Tonka is a highly social and outgoing boy who loves toys – sometimes a little too much. He will need an ex-perienced handler who will work with him to teach him how to share and protect his toys or food. Resource guarding is a correctable behavior, but until Tonka can overcome this tendency, he needs to be in a home without children. He is a smart guy and knows the commands “sit” and “down,” and he is willing to learn more. He is neutered and is more than ready to move into his forever home.

Did you know that heat exhaustion can cause brain damage or even death for your pet? Pets, especially outdoor pets, require extra protection from the summer’s scorching temperatures.

Dogs with short muzzles such as boxers, pugs, bulldogs and mastiffs have even more difficulty breathing during hot, humid days.

Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans, instead, they pant to cool themselves. Loud, rapid panting, however, is one of the first signs of heat exhaustion. Other signs include rapid pulse, glazed eyes, excessive salivation, elevated body temperature, excessive whining or agitation, vomiting and white or bluish gums. Only one of

The following tips will help protect your pets from heat exhaustion: • Keep plenty of cool, clean water in a spill-proof container

available to your pets.

• Bring pets inside, especially during the hottest hours of the day. Be particularly careful with senior and overweight pets.

• Do not shave off your pet’s coat. Bare skin can sunburn. Fur protects your pet from the heat and insects.

• Walk your pet during the cooler morning and evening hours and never jog with your pet on hot, humid days. Avoid the hot pavement which can burn and blister your dog’s paws.

• Do not take pets with you while running errands. The tem-perature inside a parked car can kill a pet in a matter of min-utes, even if the windows are cracked or you park in the shade.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, gently hose or sponge them down with cool water especially on the head, paw pads and groin area. Give them small amounts of water to drink and seek immediate care from a veterinarian.

It has been 145 years since gener-als Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant signed the unconditional surrender at Appomat-tox, Va., in April 1865, officially ending the American Civil War. In that horrible four-year conflict, more than 600,000 soldiers died defending their states, their beliefs and their honor. This civil con-flict impacted every facet of Ameri-can history and culture. It is such an ingrained part of our heritage that it continues almost every weekend somewhere in the United States through living history re-enactors. Back by popular demand, the Civil War re-enactors will once again

set up camp at CarmelFest. Units representing the Union and the

Confederacy will be in uniform and in character. While these are re-enactor units, they represent actual regiments in the war. These men have full-time jobs, and are not paid for their avocations as re-enactors. They purchase their

own authentic replicas of uniforms, equipment and weapons, and often wear the facial hair and haircuts that were used by their forefathers in the actual conflicts. A little known fact about our

state’s role in the Civil War is that Indiana had more volunteers for the Union than any other state. In addi-tion, there were 47 Medal of Honor winners from Indiana, including

Captain William W. Kendall, of the 49th. The Civil War re-enactors are please to be returning to CarmelFest. Their encamp-ment area will be set up just east of City Hall on the grounds of our good friends at Marketing Services of Indiana. Make sure you drop by and visit with them, and experience a little of our Hoosier heritage. They will be happy to offer you a sample of fire-roasted coffee

David B. Prange, 84, of Noblesville, died June 9, 2010 at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. He was born May 27,1926 in Crocketts Bluff, Ark. to Adolph and Edna (Burrough) Prange. He mar-ried Laverne Hummel on October 21, 1956 in Los Angeles. She survives. David was a civil en-gineer. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He was very active in many church activi-ties at Saint Mathew Lutheran Church in Harbor City, Calif. He joined Christ Lutheran Church in Noblesville after moving to Indiana. Along with his wife, Laverne Prange of Noblesville, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Joseph Mendoza of Cypress California; one son and two daughters-in-law, Michael Prange and Anne Judge of Somerville, Massachusetts and Linda Prange of Noblesville; two grand-daughters, Amanda Mendoza and Lisa Prange; and three grandsons, Joseph Mendoza, and Jeremy and William Prange. Clarence A. Commer, 88, Noblesville, passed away June 16, 2010 at Riverwalk Village in Noblesville. He was born Feb. 15, 1922 in Noblesville. Clarence retired from Firestone after working there 30 years. Clarence served in the Army until 1946, during WWII. He loved country music and played the guitar. He also en-

joyed wrestling and crafts.
