June Birthdays
In astrology, those born from June 1–20 are the Twins of Gemini. With a feeling that something or someone is always missing, Twins forever seek new friends and opportunities. They are curious, intelligent, sociable communicators. Those born from June 21–30 are Cancer’s Crabs. Crabs like to retreat into their “shells” and enjoy being surrounded by loved ones at home. They nurture deep relationships and become loyal friends.

Last Month at Our Lady of the Valley
We kicked off last month by celebrating Cinco de Mayo with margaritas, chips, salsa, wearing decorative sombreros, and playing a few games. The margaritas were a huge hit! Next, we held a Mother’s Day Tea for residents and family members to enjoy. Everyone was able to choose from a variety of teas, fresh fruit, assorted cheese, and we cannot forget the delicious dessert! While everyone enjoyed the refreshments and conversations, we also had The Saxy Keys come to entertain everyone. Always a crowd favorite. Marc Baskind joined us to perform the May Birthday Party to help us celebrate everyone who had a birthday in May. Music, Friends, and Food! What more could one want?! Later that afternoon everyone headed to the front porch for a cheese and wine tasting. Everyone enjoyed the combination and enjoyed the nice weather as well. We held the Valley Olympics where residents participated in ring toss, ribbon dancing, noodle hockey, javelin throw, and parachute toss. Everyone had a blast! Our very own Valley Choir performed a Memorial Day Service to bring joy through song and take the time to remember family and friends. To wrap up the month of May, residents enjoyed a Memorial Day Concert with Robbie & Betty Vance with delicious refreshments on the porch! Be on the lookout for Summer Staycations!

Pastor’s Corner
Many have heard the expression:” Jack of all Trades,
Master of none” a loose-fitting adage meant more
as a compliment than as an insult to one’s ability.
This is exactly the way I hope my legacy is
remembered by my children and grandchildren. I
think it also best describes my Dad as I remember
his many skills around the house and farm, yet not
to discount his intellectual ability to also understand
and exposit theological precepts. Once when I was
about 6 years old my dad had accepted the
challenge from a neighbor to do a “Valve Job” on his
1957 Desoto, Hemi engine. (in our garage on Raleigh
ave. that he had built himself) I remember as he
removed the gigantic hood of this “Adventurer”
model he had to enlist the help of a couple
neighbors to lift it off and place it securely in the
corner. A portion of the chore that I was not able to
participate in, however when the actual mechanical
breakdown began, I had the all-important job of
locating the correct size wrench and delivering it to
my Dads hands, as he anxiously awaited its arrival.
That is why this experience was such a lesson for me
learning my fractions, which were engraved on each
handle and my Dad’s patience was to be admired as
he would gently rebuke “no son this is a 1/2-inch
wrench, I need the 9/16, put this one back and get
the right one. I am not sure how long this car was in
our garage for repair, it seemed like very fast work
for such a major project. However, I will never
forget the since of accomplishment of locating just
the right tool and the proud expression on my dad’s
face when I placed it in his open hand.
The Greatest Commandment
(Deuteronomy 6: 6-7)
…6 These words I am commanding you
today are to be upon your hearts. 7And
you shall teach them diligently to your
children and speak of them when you sit at
home and when you walk along the road,
when you lie down and when you get up.
By the way I still have that green powder-
coated S-K toolbox in my garage waiting to
be handed down to the generations to
come. Happy Fathers Dad to my Loving
Dad, his 1st of which will be spent in
Heaven.
Pastor Al
For the Fathers
Father’s Day arrives on the third Sunday of June, and with it comes the traditional giving of cards, ties, and loving thanks. In 1909, Sonora Scott Dodd was attending a Mother’s Day church service when it occurred to her
that there did not exist an equivalent holiday to honor fathers. Her own mother had died when she just 16, leaving her and her 13 brothers and sisters to be raised by their father, Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart. By Dodd’s account, her father was a model parent, acting as both father and mother to Dodd and her siblings. She convinced her church to celebrate the first Father’s Day on her father’s birthday, June 5, but the clergy needed more time to organize such an event. They decided to hold a Father’s Day service on the third Sunday of June instead.

Suckers for Seersucker
On a hot and humid Thursday in June, United States senators arrive to work wearing seersucker suits. “Seersucker Thursday” is an annual bipartisan tradition, a throwback to the days before air-conditioning was installed in the U.S. Capitol. The holiday was
championed by Mississippi Senator Trent Lott in 1996, who wanted to “bring a little Southern charm to the Capitol.” Seersucker is popular in the South, but the cool, dimpled cotton fabric originated in India. The word seersucker comes from the Persian phrase shir o shekar, meaning “milk and sugar,” which refers to the smooth and coarse textures of the cloth’s alternating light and dark stripes.
