NACE International News for the European Area June 2020 Welcome from Roberto Malfanti, NACE European Area Chairman Dear European Colleagues, I hope you are managing to keep safe during these difficult times. The past few months have proven challenging to every- one, and I offer sincere best wishes to you and your families for good health. We had anticipated that 2020 would, to use Stuart Bond’s phrase, be “Europe Refresh 2020” following a period of low activity in the European Area. We are still making good progress and devising plans for the future, although the present crisis has limited the opportunities for in-person interaction between our members and slowed down our moves toward enhanced activi- ties in the European Area. During the past 12 months, both the Milano and Benelux Sections have been reactivated following the resolution of Sec- tion Affiliation Agreement discussions. We thank the officers for progressing with planning for 2020. Meanwhile in the UK, we have just activated the new NACE UK Section, which comprises the previous NACE GB and Aber - deen Sections. The combination followed numerous discussions between both sections and NACE, which focused upon the best interests for our members. A merger was seen as providing the optimal way to improve support to NACE members across the UK. By the time you read this, we should have a fully active UK Section with the officers duly elected. Welcome from Roberto Malfanti, NACE European Area ChairmanDear European Colleagues,

I hope you are managing to keep safe during these difficult times. The past few months have proven challenging to every-one, and I offer sincere best wishes to you and your families for

good health. We had anticipated that 2020 would, to use Stuart Bond’s

phrase, be “Europe Refresh 2020” following a period of low activity in the European Area. We are still making good progress and devising plans for the future, although the present crisis has limited the opportunities for in-person interaction between our members and slowed down our moves toward enhanced activi-ties in the European Area.

During the past 12 months, both the Milano and Benelux Sections have been reactivated following the resolution of Sec-tion Affiliation Agreement discussions. We thank the officers for progressing with planning for 2020.

Meanwhile in the UK, we have just activated the new NACE UK Section, which comprises the previous NACE GB and Aber-deen Sections. The combination followed numerous discussions between both sections and NACE, which focused upon the best interests for our members. A merger was seen as providing the optimal way to improve support to NACE members across the UK. By the time you read this, we should have a fully active UK Section with the officers duly elected.

I hope you enjoy this newsletter.

2 June 2020 European Area News

Dear European Area Members,

Since our last newslet-ter, much has pro-gressed within the

European Area.I would like to update

members on the merger process between NACE

International and SSPC: The Society for Protec-tive Coatings. I am honored to contribute to this process and to be elected by the NACE Inter-national Board as one of the representatives of the NACE-SSPC task group.• Throughout 2019, the representatives met

several times for in-depth discussions to explore the feasibility of a combined as-sociation, including the benefits it would provide to NACE and SSPC members, as well as to the broader industry. A third-party consulting firm was hired to facilitate dis-cussions, conduct research, and ensure a fair and balanced approach to the deci-sion-making process. Stakeholders repre-senting the diverse perspectives in each organization were interviewed to gain an understanding of their perceptions of the other organization and the prospects of a combined association.

• Throughout 2020, the following discussions were held: task force meetings, a face-to-face meeting held on January 21-22, and follow up board meetings and continuation discussions.

• On March 14, 2020, NACE’s Board of Direc-tors voted unanimously in favor of the reso-lution to combine NACE and SSPC, including the creation of “NewOrg” (actual name TBD) and “NewOrg Institute” (actual name also TBD). Following the board’s vote, the next step toward combining the organizations was a member vote by the full memberships of both NACE and SSPC, which was held online from April 3-17, 2020.

• On April 20, 2020, NACE announced its members had voted to approve the associa-tion’s proposal to combine with SSPC. During the two-week voting period, thousands of

NACE stakeholders worldwide cast votes, with an overwhelming 89% in favor of com-bining forces with SSPC.

• Personally, I am looking forward to contribut-ing toward this exciting organization, which, in my opinion, will broaden activities and oppor-tunities, as well as expand the network of all members. In addition, the NACE European Corrosion

Management Conference 2020, scheduled for November 17-19, 2020 in Bucharest, Romania, is still being planned. The new European Cor-rosion Management Conference will provide a unique look at the different management system domains, corrosion management best practices across multiple industry sectors, and advance-ments in corrosion mitigation technology.

Due to COVID-19 and ongoing travel re-strictions, as well as other uncertainties, it was recently decided to execute the conference as a virtual event platform. This idea was present-ed by Jacob Adams, NACE’s director of confer-ences, exhibits, and sponsorships.

Together, we are also looking forward to po-tentially establish a future section in Romania.

I would kindly like to thank all our European Area board members for their contributions, with a special thanks to Stuart Bond, our Eu-ropean Area manager and technical advisor, for doing an outstanding job as well as moving forward our fruitful monthly area meetings on Zoom. I would also like to thank Bill Hedges, who has contributed so much to our area, especially in terms of strategic planning and serving as our area newsletter editor. Bill has decided to resign from the board in order to fully focus on his upcoming position as ICorr president. We all wish Bill the best of success.

Finally, congratulations to our 2020 Awards recipients, Roy Johnsen, Ulf Kivisakk, Sandvik, and Tom Ladwein, who have received awards submitted by the European Area Award Com-mittee headed by Lucrezia Scoppio. EA

Sincerely,

Prof. Amir EliezerEuropean Area Director

Members of NACE International and SSPC Vote Overwhelmingly in Favor of Combining Organizations

On April 21st, NACE International an-nounced its members have voted to approve the association’s proposal to

combine with SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings. During the two-week voting period, thousands of NACE stakeholders worldwide cast votes with an overwhelming 89% in favor of combining forces with SSPC.

The vote came after more than a year of discussions between the member leadership of both organizations and a unanimous vote this past March by NACE International’s Board of Directors in favor of a resolution to bring the combination to a member vote.

“With what is clearly a resounding ‘yes,’ the NACE membership has spoken,” said NACE President Terry Greenfield. “As a member and as NACE’s president I could not be more excit-ed with this result. This will bring more benefits and resources to the members of both orga-nizations and it will have a strong and positive impact on the corrosion and coatings profes-sion worldwide.”

According to SSPC President Joseph Walk-er, “This was a vote of historical importance to SSPC members and to the coatings and cor-rosion industries. The level of engagement and interest throughout the process and the im-pressive showing for the vote demonstrates the enthusiasm the industry has for the potential of this combination. I look forward to working with my colleagues at NACE as we move forward on creating this new organization.”

Several steps are required before a specific timeline for completion of a combination can be set, and most changes will not be immediate. Initial efforts will be focused on determining the new governance and membership structure by January 1, 2021. Member volunteers will drive discussions and decision-making to ensure the final combined organization represents the best interests of the membership. McKinley Advisors will continue to serve as a third party, indepen-dent advisor to assist both organizations with combining resources, knowledge, and cultures.

NACE International CEO, Bob Chalker and SSPC Executive Director, Bill Worms issued the following joint statement, “From the time each of us began working for our organizations we have believed our members can be stronger to-gether. We are devoted to providing our mem-bers with the best services, education, and products possible and we know this combined organization will accomplish that and more. We are pleased to see this come together and look forward to a bright future ahead for the mem-bers of NACE and SSPC.”

Up to date info will be communicated via email & website. EA

An Update from Stuart Bond, NACE European Area ManagerIs your section correctly set?

The best way for NACE members to stay connected and to find out what is hap-pening in your area is through your local

section. Some members have noted that their section assignment is not correct. If you want to check or change which section you belong to, please go to https://my.nace.org/User/Login.aspx.

After entering your logon credentials, click on the pen/edit icon by “Contact Details.” Then click on the “Contact Info” tab where you can select the NACE Chapter/Section in the drop-down list for your appropriate area or section.

While you are there, check that your NACE profile is set to receive the information you want using the “My Settings” tab. This will allow you to connect with your section to discuss ideas for engagement opportunities, including the use of online resources and remote meetings. We have all been using technology for remote meetings more than ever, and thus we shouldn’t miss the chance to continue using it when it can provide opportunities for engaging with members who may find it difficult to attend a meeting in person.

If you are a member in Europe and your location does not have a section (e.g., current-ly Spain and other countries), please join the European Area. You can volunteer to assist the area with activities directly and engage with

other members in Europe. All sections are cur-rently looking for help with local activities and for activity chairpersons to organize them. Now is a fantastic time to join us in “Europe Refresh 2020.”

If you are keen to engage with other mem-bers using the online tools that NACE Inter-national provides, either contact your section chair or me directly. I welcome any comments, ideas, and feedback you may wish to share or discuss. Please contact me at [email protected].

Section Update

As noted in the last newsletter, several Euro-pean sections were suspended and virtually all activities since then have been focused upon reinstating them. If you would like to know who the officers of your local section are, visit the NACE home page at www.nace.org, find the “Membership” tab, and click on “Sections & Areas.” Use the search options to select your area (European Area) and your section and select “Go.” Finally, click on the “Officers” link in the left-hand column to find your officers and their contact details.

As noted above, the Benelux, Milano, and UK Sections are now active again. All are consid-ering activities that can be undertaken as soon as the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and we welcome members to engage with them. EA
