Nearby Community Newsletter Magazines:

Community Hall UpdatesOur community hall is sort-of open at the current time. The regular preschool is operating, and small gatherings/meetings are being booked as long as the groups follow our COVID-19 guidelines. Those guidelines primarily focus on appropriate social distancing, wearing of masks, and no shared food or drink. Our main room can accommodate groups of 25 to 30, depending upon chair layout, for things like AGMs. We will always adhere to Provincial and Civic requirements for gatherings and will update our policies as these change over time. We have al-tered our cleaning policies to make sure our spaces are safe for all.

Play Basketball While the Weather CooperatesOur basketball hoops are currently adorned with new-ish netting. There seems to have been a marked increase in the number of players this sum-mer. Get out and use the hoops while you can. The nets tend not to be very resilient in Calgary winters!

New Rink Volunteers NeededAnother of our most popular activities near the community hall area is the skating rink in the winter. Our rink shelter, Melrose Place, has made putting on skates easier and more comfortable. Last year, we had a particularly long season with well-paced weather. We have a dedicated team of rink volunteers who clean and flood the rink under the cover of darkness (although, not too stealthily thanks to the lights). We can always use some additional hands to assist. Please let us know if you have some time to help keep up the ice through the cold months.

Contact the association at [email protected] and we will put you in touch with the crew!

Regards,

Jay Nelson

*Park Closed from 6:00 to 9:00 am Daily For Maintenance*

A unique biking amenity, a free to use bicycle pump track that will help meet the demands of this amazing sport. The South Glenmore Bicycle Pump Track is a collaboration between the Calgary Mountain Bike Alliance, The City of Calgary, and Parks Founda-tion Calgary. Whether you are trying mountain biking for the first time or you want to work on advanced skills, you are welcome here. Moun-tain biking is a sport that can be en-joyed by anyone, regardless of age.

The progressive circuit uses an up and down ‘pumping’ motion to pro-pel the bicycle forward instead of pedaling. Pump tracks are a perfect structure for practicing balance, learning skills, and improving confi-dence on the bike.

The new park will also have plenty of seating, so it’s the perfect place for families to take a break and enjoy all that South Glenmore Park has to offer.

The South Glenmore Bicycle Pump Track is made up of two custom-de-signed asphalt tracks, which are fun, flowing, and challenging for riders. The smaller track is designed for kids and beginner riders, it is 110 meters long with 7 berms and 19 rollers (when entering the park, this track is on the right). The larger track is 204 meters long and has a more chal-lenging terrain, with 8 bermed cor-ners and 27 roller jumps (this track is on the left from the entry point).

Park LocationSouth Glenmore Park—West end of 90th Avenue SW. The address of the closest parking lot is 3520 90 Ave SW Calgary, AB T2V 5B9. The Pump Track can be found by head-

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

Starting October 1, remember to tag your extra garbage bagsStarting October 1, if you have an extra bag of garbage that won’t fit in your City black cart, you’ll need to buy a garbage tag. Tags are $3 each and available at partici-pating convenience and grocery stores or online. See the full list at calgary.ca/garbagetag.

How to use garbage tags:

1. Fill your black cart first.

2. Place extra garbage in a bag and wrap a tag around the knot on top of the bag.

3. On collection day, set the bag 0.5 metres (2 feet) from your black cart.

We encourage everyone to look at what you are buy-ing and throwing away to find ways to reduce waste. Sorting materials correctly helps maximize the use of all three carts (blue, green, black).

Learn more at calgary.ca/garbagetag.

Quinterra Legacy Garden, Calgary’s newest outdoor park area dedicated to music and performance in South Glenmore Park.

A rendering of Quinterra Legacy Garden ( Bassett Associates Landscape Architecture).

Unique features of the Quinterra Legacy Garden include a concrete performance stage, outdoor musical instru-ments, ornamental trees, picnic area and immediate ac-cess to Calgary’s pathway system along the Glenmore Reservoir.

“Creating this garden has been a huge collaborative ef-fort for so many people who knew and loved our chil-dren, as well as individuals and organizations who were moved by our childrens’ stories and wanted to find a way to help,” says Barclay Hunter, on behalf of the fami-lies of the Quinterra Group. “We are so grateful to every-one who has contributed on our journey so far.”

ENMAX Corporation has also been added as a new Founding Donor of the Quinterra Legacy Garden. With

ENMAX’s generous donation of lights and power, the garden will be greatly enhanced, enabling the space to be used and enjoyed in the daytime and eve-ning.

“The Quinterra Legacy Garden will provide a beautiful and unique place for community members to come together,” says Diana Stephenson, Vice President, Public Affairs, EN-MAX. “We’re honoured to support the lighting needs of this special initiative and look forward to seeing Calgar-ians enjoy the space for years to come.”

The Quinterra Legacy Garden celebrates five inspiring young people: Lawrence Hong, Josh Hunter, Kaitlin (Kai-ti) Perras, Jordan Segura, and Zackariah Rathwell, whose lives were lost on April 15, 2014, in the quiet suburban neighborhood of Brentwood in Calgary.

“Our children lived life to the fullest with positivity and optimism. We have been inspired by their lives, learning that beyond tragedy and loss, there is light,” says Hunter.

The thoughtful design of the garden will also lend it-self well to the province’s ongoing physical distancing protocol due to COVID-19, providing an opportunity for safe, spaced gatherings as well as individual outdoor enjoyment.

“When we imagined this garden, we knew we wanted it to be a place of music, the arts, dance theatre, as well as quiet contemplation and peace,” says Hunter. “Today, in light of the pandemic, Calgarians are seeking and en-joying outdoor spaces more than ever, and the design of this space will be a place where visitors can feel safe while being part of a greater community.”

PLANNING MATTERS

by Dave Illsey | Director, PBPCA

Our goal is to undertake a “Community Vision Plan”, de-signed to provide the City of Calgary (COC) with accu-rate, useable information on our communities relevant to future planning and development in our eight com-munities.

In mid-2019, we requested clarifications from COC (through Councilor Farkas’ office) regarding continu-ation of plans for implementation of a Community Vi-sion Plan for each of our communities within District 32. We recognize that community vision plans must be in support of future COC “Multi-communities Local (Area) Growth Plan” for our District. Our specific request was for clarification and confirmation of COC schedules and prerequisites governing acceptance of our community vision plans for each of our communities. Note that the City’s planning process for “District Growth Plans” have not changed significantly over time, however, COC schedules and strategies contained in The Guidebook for Great Communities remain outstanding, due to on-going requests for clarifications to urban form typolo-gies, parking changes, and policy revisions affecting housing forms, scale modifiers, etc.

In response to our request (above) for up-dated infor-mation and clarification regarding the City’s intentions for Multi-communities Local (Area) Growth Plan, the following information was received from Councillor J. Farkas in July 2019:

“When community visioning exercises have been un-dertaken outside of any official city process, such as the Anderson-Heritage Coalition, that vision can be inte-grated into new local area plans. However, whether that happens verbatim, or in a revised form would be deter-mined as part of engagement with the overall plan area constituents and would be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Firstly, we have to do a fulsome engagement process to ensure that there is a broad spectrum of support for any (community)vision.

Secondly, we have to make sure that the vision does not inhibit complying with the policies of the Municipal Development Plan and any other higher order plans. For example, Municipal Development Plan policy

encourages growth and change in low-density neigh-bourhoods through development and redevelopment that is similar in scale and built form, and increases the mix of housing types such as accessory suites, semi-detached, townhouses, cottage housing, row or other ground-oriented housing. (MDP - Policy 2.2.5b).”

The two conditions (above) will govern our planning efforts, including information and surveys distributed to members of our communities. Interpretation of (sur-vey) responses, comments and recommendations must address planning changes within our communities and reflect the goals contained in the MDP and the Guide-book. Also, the number of responses to the survey will be important, as this will indicate community involve-ment and support for a vision plan. It is critical that com-munity surveys address applicable planning goals and objectives contained in the Municipal Development Plan (MDP), and the (approved) Guidebook for Great Communities. Otherwise, our planning efforts will not be recognized by the City in a “Multi-community Local Area Growth Plan” for District 32.

Planning processes for “Growth Plans” have not changed significantly, however schedules and strategies have been extended (by Council), resulting in delayed ap-proval of The Guidebook for Great Communities. Cur-rently, this document is in “draft” form, to allow technical and policy changes/clarifications affecting urban form typologies, on/off street parking, housing form policies and scale modifiers, etc. At this time, City Council has scheduled final review and ratification of the Guide-book for Great Communities until the Planning & Urban Development Committee (PUD) meetings in January 2021.

As a result, planning progress by District 32 Planning Group has slowed, pending approval of city planning documents and re-affirmation of schedules. Future changes may further influence our plans.

MLA, Calgary GlenmoreWhitney Issik311A, 2525 Woodview Dr SW T2W 4N4

403.216.5421 [email protected]

Dear neighbours,

October marks the time of year when the weather begins to cool, the air becomes crisp, and the leaves change col-our. I hope that you all enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine that we had in Calgary-Glenmore this summer.

COVID-19 has presented us with a variety of challenges, one of those being our economy. Our government did what it had to do in the spring to protect all Albertans, and as a result, we are faced with a historic $24.2 billion deficit. We’ve developed a bold and ambitious recovery plan to build long-term strategies to diversify our econ-omy and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By build-ing roads, schools and other core infrastructure, we are benefitting our community. By diversifying our economy and attracting investment with Canada’s most competi-tive tax environment, we are putting Alberta on a path for a generation of growth. Our government is ensuring that Alberta has the most competitive business environ-ment. Our recovery plan has accelerated the Job Cre-ation Tax Cut to 8% on July 1, 2020, which was a year and a half sooner than promised. Alberta’s government is doubling down on efforts to reduce regulatory burdens and barriers for businesses through red tape reduction.

October 12 is Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family can take time to enjoy this holiday together and re-member what you are thankful for. As always, it is my honour to serve as your MLA. Please feel free to contact our office at any time.

Sincerely,

Whitney Issik

William Shakespeare was known for his plays and sonnets that contained an extensive vocabulary of 31,534 unique words. One word that you’ll never find in one of his works is ‘October’. The au-tumn month is never mentioned in a single one of his writings but there seems to be no specific reason as to why that is.

1It was 64 years ago, a peaceful student demonstration in Budapest turned to a bloodbath in a single, explosive mo-ment. The communist secret police fired on the ranks of the students, slaying many on the spot.

As Tom Kennedy wrote, their only crime was asking for what all people should have: a decent life, without fear. In other words, the kind of existence that many Canadians today take for granted.

The student demonstration in pursuit of liberty and dem-ocratic reforms ignited a nation-wide revolt against the harsh policies and control embodied in the Communist government of the time.

Their audacity captured the attention and imagination of the world. The last ever broadcast from Freedom Radio was heard across the globe: “Nations of the world, in the name of truth and freedom, help!”

The Soviets responded quickly and cruelly. Acting in breach of promises and international law, they attacked Hungary. Despite the shining promise and rally cry for a “Free Hun-gary,” that ideal was not to be realized for at least another generation. The rest, so they say, is history.

Although the revolution failed, its consequences have been felt ever since, particularly in what is now considered the democratic transition in Central Europe, and in the lives of diaspora communities around the world.

Today, Hungarian immigrants and their descendants have contributed to every corner and part of Canadian life. To my grandparents, and to my father who was just a child when he arrived to Canada, our country was more than just a shelter from the storm.

It was the promise of a fresh start.

As we remember the events of the past, let us reflect on what comes next: building home, speaking out against injustice and honouring the sacrifices of those who came before.

We work to build what all people should have, but proves rare throughout the world: a decent life, without fear.

In other words, the great Canadian life that we must never take for granted.

Respectfully,

Jeromy Farkas, Ward 11 Councillor and Palliser Resident

Aging well and remaining in your home has never been more important than it is today. Most seniors want to remain in their home but if memory issues arise, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, placement in a long-term care facility becomes inevitable.

The pandemic has highlighted the inherent weakness-es of long-term care facilities. In the spring, Canadians watched in horror as news outlets detailed outbreaks and deaths in senior care facilities. An analysis done by the Canadian Institute for Health has shown that long-term care resident deaths made up 81% of all reported COVID-19 deaths in Canada.

This is a frightening prospect if you are experiencing memory issues or if Alzheimer’s runs in your family. However, cognitive decline and long-term care does not have to be your future – there is now hope.

Dr. Dale Bredesen is an internationally recognized ex-pert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease, and he is changing the world of Alzheimer’s disease research. Until recently, doctors did not know what caused Alzheimer’s and couldn’t offer much help; how-ever, that has changed.

Dr. Bredesen has shown that Alzheimer’s is not one dis-ease, but is instead caused by more than 36 different factors. Just like a roof in a rainstorm that has 36 holes, which leaks and will eventually flood if the holes are not patched, Alzheimer’s has 36+ causes that must be ad-dressed if you are to reverse cognitive decline.

In Dr. Bredesen’s books, “The End of Alzheimer’s” and “The End of Alzheimer’s Program: The First Protocol to Enhance Cognition and Reverse Decline”, he details factors that have been identified as contributors to

cognitive decline. He also describes how the Bredesen Protocol can prevent the disease and has been shown to reverse symptoms in people with mild to severe de-cline.

Knowing precisely which factors are inhibiting or could inhibit your cognition is the first step. Dr. Bredesen believes everyone over the age of 45 should consider getting a “cognoscopy”, especially if Alzheimer’s or de-mentia runs in their family. A cognoscopy tests for each of the dozens of risk factors, and involves giving blood, taking cognitive tests, and providing a health history.

Based on the results of a cognoscopy, patients receive a personalized treatment protocol that uses diet, exer-cise, sleep, stress reduction, supplements, and more to achieve reversal. The Bredesen Protocol uses a multi-pronged approach to treat a complicated, multifaceted disease.

If preventing Alzheimer’s is your goal, then a cognosco-py gives you a baseline of your cognition, and provides a framework to repair any abnormal factors are detected before you have symptoms. Prevention is key as cogni-tive decline generally starts 10 to 15 years before it is di-agnosed. If you are already in decline, knowing which of the 36+ factors are causing your memory loss gives you the knowledge for a personalized, targeted approach to reversing Alzheimer’s.

Dr. Bredesen’s research and protocol have achieved remarkable results in the treatment and prevention Alzheimer’s disease and ushers in a new era of hope. Whether your interest is in prevention Alzheimer’s dis-ease or reversing it, you can find a health care profes-sional trained in the Bredesen Protocol in your area by contacting Dr. Bredesen’s team at Apollo Health.
