Summer activities are in full swing, take the time to read thoroughly through this newsletter and see what all we have in store for you this summer. Additionally, watch social media and weekly emails for the most updated information. The last few months the front of the newsletter has had some lengthy lists of new member names. That doesn’t tell the whole story and naturally that has led to more questions of do we have too many members and can we handle it. If you go back on the website and read my April newsletter article it refer- enced that we believe the most significant indicator of golf course membership is rounds of golf played. Through April of this year we are up 25% on rounds of golf compared to 2018, down 7% compared to 2017 and flat compared to 2016. Our current rounds pace is the third slowest in the history of the club. Be con- fident that we are closely monitoring our member levels and we can handle our current activity levels. Finally, as you are reading this our new EZ Go RXV golf carts should be arriving at the club. Making this a good time to remind you to please use proper cart etiquette. If carts are supposed to be on the path, keep all four wheels on the path. When we are using the 90-degree rule, please travel on the paths when possible, then proceed to your ball. And perhaps the most violated cart rule: when you are within 20 yards of any tee or green, please return to the path. This is our club, and we have to work together in order to keep it in great condition. While I’m on this topic some of our most common complaints are general disregard from some members about common etiquette including lack of raking bunkers, not repairing ball marks, staying caught up with the group in front of you, keeping seeds and cigars off greens and more. FATHER’S DAY GOLFFather’s Day presents a great opportunity to let your father know how much you appreciate him. More than any gift you could buy, a simple “thanks” or “I Love You” could make his day, week or even year. Why is it so hard to find the time to do that?

Another hard thing to do is select the appropriate gift, one that he will like and use. Our Pro Shop has unlimited merchandise that your fathers love! We know this because, not only do we know your father, but we like the same types of things as he does. Please take a moment to visit your golf shop, look at the new merchandise and let our golf professionals help you find the perfect gift for your father. If you cannot make up your mind, buy him a gift certificate that he can use at his leisure. Remember, at Windyke there are no long lines, no horrible mall traffic and no parking problem. We have a friendly, courteous and knowledgeable sales staff. In fact, this is a great place, not only to find a Father’s Day gift, but a great place to spend Father’s Day as well. For this reason, on June 16th, you may bring your father, grandfather, son, grandson, daughter or granddaughter to Windyke for a complimentary round of golf. The normal age restriction will be in effect for the regulation courses, each person must be at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult on weekends. However, our Executive Par Three course is open to all players. We look forward to seeing you on Father’s Day!

This will be the 11th Annual Par 3 Open. We will host this fun and exciting event on Saturday, July 20. We will tee off on #1 and #10 at 2:00. The cost of this event will be $30. This event will be open to any type of member and all age groups. Everyone will play the ball from the same set of tee boxes to ensure that we find the very best Par 3 player. If you are that player, then you will be immortalized in Windyke lore with your name proudly engraved on our Par 3 Open trophy.

Many of our junior golfers who play this course every day during the summer are going to be hard to beat. To all of you guys out there who think that you have out-grown the par 3, think again. So make this event the motivation for you to get out there and do a little practice on the par 3. You never know, you just might find that a little short game practice will make all of the difference in your normal game. Plus, this is a Windyke Cup Points Event with two flights. Call the Pro Shop to sign up: (901)755-3160.

Putting:Are You Practicing the Correct Way? LukeReilly•AssistantGolfProfessional

There is a reason that we drive for show, but putt for the dough. The strokes we make on the putting green are always the last strokes we make during the round and play a huge factor in our scoring. Too often, I hear golfers saying that they hit the ball great, but they couldn’t make any putts!

At this point I ask them a simple question: how do you practice your putting? Most people respond by saying they roll a few putts before they go play, or practice a few 3, 6 and 10 foot putts. As a teacher, I want to yell at them because that isn’t actually practicing. There is much more to putting than rolling a few putts on the practice green. With putting, we need to practice our: • Pre-shot Routine and Set-Up This will help you develop a smooth and calm rhythm over the ball. This is a great way to help you stay relaxed and confident over your putts out on the course.• Speed/ Distance Control Walk off your putts. Knowing the distance of your putts and factoring in the slope will give you a better idea of how hard you need to hit your putt. • Club Path Two tee gate drill: This drill will help you avoid pushing/pulling putts and help you develop a more consistent stroke.• Reading Greens Pick a hole on the practice green. Place two tees where you think the straightest uphill and downhill putt are and two tees where you think the most breaking putts are. Hint: The tees should be at 12, 3, 6, and 9 on a clock. This is a great way to improve your ability to read greens.

If we increase the amount of quality time we spend working on improving the consistency of our pre-shot routine and putting stroke, we should begin to avoid those nasty three putts and make more birdie putts! If you want to improve your putting on the course, you have to improve the way you practice first! If you are ready to improve your putting, come find me in the golf shop and we can get started!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2019 John Romeo, BOARD PRESIDENT

Summer is here! And it’s time to take full advantage of all the activities that Windyke has to offer. And in the summer months, there is so much to choose from! Golf? Of course, that’s a no-brainer. But how about getting the family out to the Windyke pool? We have a great staff and facility there and I know a good time will be had by all. Maybe tennis or pickleball? If you have racquet skills, or even if you don’t, get out and give it a try. And don’t forget all the options for your kids and the summer golf programs. Check in with the Golf Shop for more details on those programs. If food is your pleasure, I have to say that our food offerings have never been better and are being updated and enhanced all the time. Come out for one of our patio nights, the monthly brunch, Saturday breakfast or any of the other great options available for all you “foodies” out there. It’s summer – let’s have some fun!

The Clubhouse is excited about all the upcoming events this summer. Memorial Day kicked the summer season off with the opening of the pool. Be sure to take advan-tage of the pool snack bar and the cabanas for your kid’s birthday parties and other small gatherings. Be sure to introduce yourself to Hudson, our new pool manager on your way in. We’ve also opened up our new private dining room to accommodate the increased business in our Bar & Grille area. This space will also be available to rent for wedding parties, business meetings, and other small gatherings. Reach out to Alicia Wertz, our new Event Coordinator, for any potential dates. Lastly, be sure to get a jump on reservations for Father’s Day Brunch, Couples Golf, Friday Night Dinner, and Sunday Brunch all happening in June. The events continue to fill up fast!

Thanks, Steven Ash, Food and Beverage Director

POOL NEWS

SUMMERTIME’S NEW FACES As many of you are aware, each summer we begin to have a few new faces on the Windyke Pro Shop staff. These new employees come in the form of Professional Golf Management interns from Mississippi State University. These are the future of our industry and a large portion of their training will be from the 16 months of internships that they must complete prior to graduation. This year, we welcome Jacob McClish. He has only been with us for a few weeks now, so if you have not met him, please stop in the golf shop to say ‘hello’. Jacob is from Ocean Springs, MS. This is his second of three intern-ships he will complete before graduation. He completed his previous internship at Diamond Head Country Club in Diamond Head, MS and will be with us until November of this year. As a former intern here at Windyke, I can attest that Windyke is a great place to complete an internship. Not only do the interns here get a fast-for-warded education on the real workings of a golf operation, but they also get to do it around a great group of members. It is for this reason that I came back to Windyke after completing my internship here. The next time that you are out at the club, make sure to stop in and say hello to Jacob.

Tip from the Pro On Plane

Coach Brock901-755-3160 (Pro Shop booking)901-238-7974 (cell)[email protected]

I saw a training aid by David Ledbetter a decade ago that had a laser inserted into the butt of the club. Its purpose was to teach the student to swing ‘on plane’, or on the correct path. You may have also seen a large PVC pipe circle contraption that helps a player swing on the three-dimensional path in space.

If you look at the laser in the picture, it is following a linear path! It is kind of weird to see such a complex angular swing where the butt of the club is on a straight line! If you look at the bottom of the PVC circle you will see a similar straight line at the base of the structure. Essentially, the PVC circle is angled on the target line that is parallel to that base pipe. So, what do we learn from this? In the golf swing, as it moves back, the butt of the club points to the target line, where the ball is part of that line. In the downswing, as seen in the laser picture, the same track is mapped as the club comes down. This is good for our three-dimensional picture of the golf swing and helps us as we try to swing on this pathway, or plane. Keep this in mind as you train your swing. If you can get on the path/plane with greater consistency, your game will improve.

I would love to help you find and master this technique so that you can enjoy golf more! Book a lesson and you can build some confidence and repeatability in your golf swing. P.S. Junior clinics, Junior League, and Playdays have begun! Sign up right away and take part in these wonderful programs. You are not too late! Pro shop: 755-3160

BIG COUNTRY BREAKFAST 7 a.m. • PLAY STARTS AT 8 a.m. • ENTRY FEE: $100Call the Golf Shop at (901)755-3160 to sign up today!

This is always one of our most popular events of the year, as it almost always fills up with a waiting list to get in. Are you a new member of the club? Have you played with the same players for the last 20 years and are looking for a change? Have you been a member here, but do not know too many other members? Do you love the thrill of competition? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of those questions, then the annual Red, White and Blue Handicap Scramble is a great opportunity for you. If you have never played this would be a great year to start. There are many ways to enter this event. #1. You can sign up as a single player and we will computer pair you with other golfers. This pairing system allows players an opportunity to step outside their normal group and meet some new friends. #2. You can sign up with a friend and we will find a twosome to pair with you. This will allow each of you to feel comfortable and still have an opportunity to meet some new friends.#3. You can sign up with a pairing of your choosing. That’s the best part of this handicap scramble format. We can put together a highly competitive event based on the member’s preferences for playing.

Guidelines are as follows:• Four person handicap scramble format • 3 Guests per team are allowed. Guest MUST have a current USGA index or be able to provide at least 10 scorecards.• Make your own team or sign up as an individual and we will pair you.• Each team’s handicap is based on the following formula using a players USGA index: +0.1 and below = 5 points 0 - 4.9 = 4 points 5.0 - 9.9 = 3 points Add up the total points and 10.0 - 14.9 = 2 points subtract from 10. That will 15.0 + = 1 point will be the team handicap. • If you do not have a full team, we can help you find additional players.• Tee Box assignments: 0.9 index & below will play the BLUE tees 1.0- 14.9 index will play the GOLD tees 15.0-21.9 index will play the WHITE tees 22.0 index & above will play the RED tees • Tee Box assignments for Seniors(60+) and Jrs.
