Cinco de My O Mayo Street Party Celebration
Wow! What a festive evening on South Green at Kim and Don Trudeau’s Casa.
The CCE “Seniors” definitely turned out for the Annual Street Party. Approximately 180 partying people ate, danced, sang and competed in the Corn Hole Tourney.
Sam Domicolo provided the music, everyone brought a Mexican inspired dish to share and some hard core partiers even brought Jello shots (Tequila Sunrise, Pina Colada and Margarita flavored, YUM). There was plenty of food, fun and comradery.
After playing and winning several games, the Corn Hole Champions prize for 2018 was awarded to Sandy and Steve Harris. They were unstoppable!
The festivities began at 6PM and concluded around 10PM with the smashing of the piñata, filled with sample liquor bottles – the perfect nightcap.
Thanks again to Kim and Company for hosting yet another excellent event!

Save Those StampsRecycle your used postage stamps by
placing them in large envelopes located on the Bulletin Boards in the Clubhouse Meeting Room and the Activity Building. Millie McCowan collects them for the Audubon rehab center. Thank you.
Civic MeetingThe June Civic Meeting is Saturday,
June 2nd at 10:00 AM in the CCE Activity Building. Coffee and donuts will be served starting at 9:30 AM. Please bring a food pantry donation. And don’t forget to wear nametags!
Civic Meeting RelocationThe Saturday Civic Association meetings
are moving to the Activity Building for the months of June, July, August, September and October, with the Civic Board meetings now at 9am, instead of 8am. Donuts will still be served at 9:30 with the regular meeting following at 10:00 am. Fewer people attend the meetings during these months, so to save the staff from setting up for more attendees, the Activity Building is the better choice. Beginning November 3rd, the meetings will resume in the Clubhouse, with the Civic Board meeting at 8am. Any questions, please contact Sandy Krubl, Acting President, 941 484 2295.
Ladies CardsLadies Cards will be held June 15th,
2018, the third Friday in the month, at 12:30 pm. There will be NO dessert served. Please sign up on the sheet in the Activity Building and remember the Food Pantry. We appreciate your donation.
For more information, call Ruby Steiner at 941-486-8689.

Sunshine FundIf you know of a resident who
needs a little ray of sunshine, we can let them know that we care, by sending them a card to cheer them up. Just list the name and reason on one of the contact sheets which are posted in two locations – the bulletin board in the Clubhouse Meeting Room and the bulletin board near the Library in the Activity Building. Sheila Everitt, 941 484 1580 is the contact for more information
Call-In ServiceFor those of you who are ill, rehabbing
from surgery or an accident, or reside alone and would like someone to check on you, CCE offers a volunteer Call-In Service. There is no charge for this service, but you must request it by signing up with the CCE Friendship Team. Just knowing that someone is checking on you daily can be a great relief for those residing alone. If you are interested, please contact Sally Cowin at 941 480 9109 for more information.
Food PantryThanks to you and your neighbors who
went North for record donations in April and May. Four trips were made to the Pantry with over one thousand items. The continued generosity of the residents here is amazing. Since some clients travel to the Pantry on bicycles, extra reusable shopping bags are also excellent donations. Suggested donations for June are Hamburger Helper or canned fruit. Contact Jean Price, 941 485 7277 for more information.
Country Club Estates NewsletterPage 4 June - 2018Improving the Environment………or taking care of our Mother Earth
I am beginning a monthly column in our Newsletter with suggestions on how we can do better for our Community. This would be a public forum of Environmental ideas of how we can reduce our impact on our surroundings. This column would be a central point on suggestions, research and proposals.
As Purveyor, I have begun this by greatly reducing our use of ‘plastics’ while saving on costs to CCE. I think that there are other areas with the same potential.
So…….do you have any ideas that you would like to promote? Send them to me for further investigation and routing.
Some areas that I would like to pursue are: 1. The use of mimosa ground cover
to replace a standard lawn. Today I met Vivian on S Green who had a beautiful lawn.
2. Explore the use of solar heating for our pool
3. Explore other solar alternatives. 4. How we can contribute to clean
water 5. How can we reduce our carbon
footprint 6. Earth Day Activities 7. Coordinating with Sarasota County
Environment 8. Communication with other
communities on their Environmental Activities.
As we move forward, some of these ideas are for your own interest, others would go thru CCE, and either the Civic or Co-Op Boards. What do you think? Feel free to contact me: [email protected], or 301-788-0169
Historical Notes about our FlagFlag Day is June 14th, so Vivian Melzer
submitted a few facts about Old Glory to share with our readers.
The colors of the Flag are explained as such: Red is for valor, zeal and fervency; White for hope, purity, cleanliness of life and rectitude of conduct; Blue is for the color of heaven, for reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice and truth.
The US Flag is unique in the deep and noble significance of its message to the entire world, a message of national independence, of individual liberty, of idealism, of patriotism.
The Flag first rose over thirteen states along the Atlantic seaboard, with a population of some three million people. Today it flies over fifty states, extending across the continent and over great islands of the two oceans.
Citizens have advanced it and heroes have died for it. It is the sign made visible of the strong spirit that has brought liberty and prosperity to the people of America. It is the flag of all of us alike. Let us accord it honor and loyalty.
June PotluckThe only Potluck for the month of June
is on the 15th at 5PM in the Clubhouse, hosted by Eileen Placha, 941 223 1796. Volunteers are needed, please, to help with set up, serving and clean-up. Plus, volunteers to help with baking cakes for dessert. Please bring a dish to share, eating utensils, plates and BYOB. Tea, coffee and desserts will be provided. Please contact Eileen, for more information.

THE KNIT WITS CORNEROnce again we are saying "goodbye" to
our crafty"snowbirds ". Hopefully they will be greeted by grass that is green and not covered by a white blanket! We had a great season -- some new, challenging, interesting projects -- even a deck chair that needed to be re-webbed. The craft show was a big success with a nice crowd of onlookers. As I have said before, "we thrive on praise". In addition to our busy hands, we find ourselves becoming more and more a "close knit" supportive group of friends. We hope you will enjoy the lazy days of summer and look forward to your return.
I am taking the privilege of literary license to offer excerpts from a verse by Clay Harrison entitled,
“MIXED BLESSINGS”
When it's just too hot to go outsidewe seek a sheltered placeto just relax or read a bookand walk a slower pace.An evening stroll helps bring relieffrom the busyness of our livesand a visit to the ocean helpsto set our worries freeas we listen to the soothing soundsof lapping waves upon the shore.
