Eugene Driker Receives Federation Award On May 22, Eugene Driker received the William Davidson Lifetime Achievement Award from Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Eugene is passion-ate about Detroit and has been active with many Jewish and civic institutions, and he and his family are long-time Temple members and supporters.

All of us at Temple wish Eugene a hearty Mazel Tov on this well-deserved award. Our Temple Community is

strengthened as a result of his involvement.

In this, my last written message to you before Phyllis and I move to California, I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Rabbi during these past five years.

My hope is that some of my teachings will remain with you to improve and guide your lives. And, of course, I wish you nothing but success in the next chapter of Temple Emanu-El.

Many wonderful memories will remain within me of these past five years. By your presence, you have given to me many gifts of the spirit that I will continue to cherish.

Now it is time to say L’hitraot, good bye.

Now more than ever, EVERY CAN COUNTS!

As I write this I’m in bed eating leftover Matzoh with Streit’s strawberry jelly. What is going on at this place? I’m exhausted from all the events happening here! I haven’t taken my dog “Noodles” out in over three weeks. Yikes. It all started in mid-April with The Spring Festival. Every speaker was terrific, as you would expect from that line-up, but

Dana Nessel, who I knew the least about, stole our hearts with her deeply personal presentation. I’m a fan. After the Festival concluded with Klezmephonic, we jumped into May starting with the ECC-Art Show that rivaled the DIA, a YACHAD led Friday night service, the Bar Mitzvah of Peter Schondorf on Saturday morning, and finally on Sun-day morning, the YACHAD Religious School Program, led by our students. May continued with concerts and dinners and the Confirmation service. We’re starting to see a lot of new faces here, and they all have smiles on them.

Summer PlanningBy the time this Bulletin comes out the Brotherhood will already have attended a Detroit Tigers game and will be getting ready to see the Toledo Mud Hens on June 10. Our other summer plans include hosting a Havdalah and Hot Dogs event to meet Rabbi Zerwekh in late August. Stay tuned for exact date and time.

May is the time Brotherhood transitions to our new leadership. We would like to thank Bob Kahn for his leadership as Brotherhood President for the last 2 years. We started some new traditions under Bob, including moving the Hanukah celebration to a luncheon and a Post Passover Pasta Party. We hope to improve upon these events going forward.

In late April Brotherhood and Temple lost a great champion in Don Cohen. Don will be greatly missed by all that new him. In his honor Brotherhood has purchased a leaf on the Tree of Life in the Tenple foyer.

We would like to invite everyone affiliated with Temple to join Brotherhood. Brotherhood is centered around the camaraderie of the members. In addition, we strive to provide services and programs for the Temple. Please know that all are welcome. We offer free membership for the first year of Brotherhood. Please check us out and we hope you will want to join us. Meetings are held monthly on Sunday mornings during the school year.

We have some first time programs in the works and bringing back a couple of old favorites from hiatus. This next year may be one of the busiest for Brotherhood in a number of years.

Heavy rain and blowing winds stopped just in time. We had record breaking attendance for our Art Show and Gift Basket Raffle. In fact, we ran out of raffle tickets! With art projects created throughout the year, the growth and development of the children, as well as their creativity, were reflected throughout the build-ing. The foyer was overflowing with families as everyone eagerly awaited the drawing for

the baskets. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible. We couldn’t have done it without the support of all our families.

With our annual Shalom celebrations taking place, another school year is coming to a close. Many of our children have been with us from “womb to room” thereby becoming an integral part of our Early Childhood Community. I know the experiences in our school have given the children the confidence and tools for suc-cess in their future education.

Day camp will begin on Monday, June 18th. Limited enrollment is available.

With Father’s Day approaching we know there are all kinds of dads. What is a dad? Here are some thoughts:

4 years: My Daddy can do anything! 7 years: My Dad knows a lot…a whole lot. 8 years: My father does not know quite everything. 12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either. 14 years: Oh, Father! Broadway and B’rachas with the Michigan Board of Cantors

Concerts! Concerts! Concerts!May has been a month of concerts. I was honored to be the Director of the annu-al Cantor's Concert "Broadway and B'rachas" this year on May 2nd. It was quite a challenge and very rewarding. I am proud to say that this concert was sold out and has been acclaimed one of the best concerts that the cantors have ever done. On May 12th I had the honor of entertaining you all and showing off my chops at the "Jewish Composers in Time" Concert that ended the Music Committee’s "Musicafe Series". I can't say thank you enough to Linda Permut. She not only ac-companied me for the first half of the concert but helped to guide me and work with me to make this concert a success. I also need to send a big Todah Rabah to the Bills Family for helping me set up and to the entire Music Committee for their help.Thank you to the Cliff Monear Trio for backing me the second half of the concert. It was truly a wonderful evening. Coming up June 8th is our Beatles Music Shabbat and Installation of our Trustees, and on June 10th is "A Celebration in Music" Concert honoring Rabbi Kalfus. I hope to see you at these events and more.

Temple’s Spring Festival Concludes With Much Fanfare

It is only apt that, on April 19, Temple Emanu-El’s Adult Education Committee opened its five-event Spring Festival themed “Repairing the World” with candid comments from long-tenured CEO and Executive Director of the Detroit Zoological Society, Ron Kagan. Kagan was in-troduced as Michigan’s “leading natural zoologist” and a fierce advocate for compassionate conservation, animal welfare and humane education. The evening event, co-sponsored by Temple’s Bea Sacks Social Action Committee, featured Kagan, who offered solutions as to how we may reconcile human’s love of nature with our unintentional, but harmful damage to the environment. Kagan’s dossier reflects that he is well-suited to discuss this subject, having established the Center for Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare and Ethics and the Berman Academy for Humane Education.

Kagan opened with alarming statistics that man-created climate change is real, and every day as many as 200 species go extinct, which is 10 times the normal pace. More alarming was his prediction that 75% of animal species will be gone at the end of the century unless drastic changes are made. These dire predictions are the result of such factors as over-population, fossil fuel (carbon) emissions, pollution, habitat loss, and meat consumption. Notably, Kagan and the Center for Zoo and Aquarium Animal Welfare and Ethics have participated in 30,000 rescues of exotic animals in the last 25 years.

On the morning of April 22, an overflow crowd heard from Barbara McQuade, former U.S. Attorney during the Obama Administration and now a professor at U of M Law School. Speaking on “Mueller, Trump and the Tools of the Federal Prosecutor” at an event co-sponsored by Temple Brotherhood, McQuade was cited as someone who as U.S. At-torney pursued justice to make the world a better place.

Fresh from her appearance as a frequent contributor to MSNBC, McQuade explained complicated legal concepts to the audience in a manner they could understand, beginning with the premise that the U.S. Attorney General may appoint a special counsel when the Department of Justice has a conflict. Robert Mueller, who was appointed special counsel last year, is a Republican who is credible, respected, and “acts with urgency.” McQuade delineated the various investigative tools of U.S. attorneys. She stated it likely that Robert Mueller has President Trump’s tax returns and discussed the search of the office of Trump’s long-time personal lawyer Michael Cohen. She dismissed as unlikely the possibility that the President may fire Mueller or Assistant AG Rosenstein. McQuade concluded stating that the investigation is not really about President Trump, but about the legitimacy of our election process. The Special Counsel will present a report to the House of Rep-resentatives, which will decide whether to charge or not.

On April 26, another large crowd was treated to insightful comments from Dana Nessel, an attorney seeking justice for the LGBTQ commu-nity, having spear-headed the U.S. Supreme Court decision of DeBoer vs. Snyder. Nessel shared with attendees the evolution of the 2014 case from one of a lesbian couple - nurses from Hazel Park who simply wanted to adopt each other’s children - to plaintiffs in a landmark case that established the legality of same-sex marriage nation-wide. In a dis-cussion titled “Winning the Fight for Full Equality,” Nessel fittingly shared how her own background of being both Jewish and a lesbian was pivotal in impacting her personal journey as a fighter for justice for the LGBTQ community. sored by Temple WRJ Sisterhood, she shared how her personal journey culminated in her inability to look away from government-endorsed efforts to treat gays as less than human and not worthy.

Elliot Wilhelm, a native Detroiter and Director of the Detroit Film Theatre (DFT), returned to Temple Emanu-El on April 28, to host an appreciation event for Patrons and Sponsors without whom the Festival events would not have been possible. Wilhelm, who has been DFT Director and Curator of Film at the DIA for 45 and 34 years respectively, is a well-known and respected name to moviegoers, having hosted the weekly Film Festival on Detroit Public TV since 1995. The audience viewed the movie “Duck Soup,” gleaning insights into how the Marx Brothers were able to make us laugh while bringing social justice issues to the big screen. Wilhelm explained that humor is an extremely important healer and teaches us in times of need that we are better than the situation going on around us. This premise was one of urgency in 1933, when the movie was released on the cusp of Hitler’s rise to power.

On the morning of April 29, Temple’s Adult Education Committee con-cluded its Spring Festival on a lighter note by treating attendees to a performance by Ann Arbor’s premier Klezmer band – Klezmephonic. Through its spirited horas, rollicking freylakhs, and blazing bulgars, the band played Eastern European folk music from the 19th and 20th centu-ries. In an event co-sponsored by Temple’s Music committee, the ensem-ble, consisting of a violin, bass, accordion, clarinet and guitar, filled the room with its unique sounds.

In closing the Festival, Committee Co-Chairs Elizabeth Zerwekh and Doug Kellerman encouraged attendees to return to their homes, seeking to repair their corner of the world. Temple President, Marty Leibowitz had the last word, expressing appre-ciation to Committee members for their exemplary job, but also to the 437 attendees who came to the events ready to listen intently, pose questions and provide intelligent and thoughtful comments. “What a jewel we have in our Temple community,” Marty recognized, and the Festival personified just that.
