GREENS COMMITTEE REPORT by Pete Fronczek

The new short game practice area and new hole 9 will open for play on June 15. We are already hearing a lot of positive comments on how good the new area looks and expect to get more positive reviews once members have a chance to use it. The June 15th opening will represent the culmination of several years’ research and planning led by the Board of Directors (BOD) and implemented by the Club’s management staff. The BOD brought in McDonald Design Group to do the design work for the project and most of the earth moving involving heavy equipment. The McDonald Group is one of the preeminent golf course renovation companies in the nation and their resume includes work at Oakmont, Pine Valley, Augusta National and other elite clubs. Given their pedigree, first class service was expected from them and they did not disappoint. What members may not be aware of is the amount of work on the project done by our own in-house MacDonald Group-Superintendent Glen MacDonald and his staff. More time was spent on and more money allocated to our in-house work than to the work by the contractor. In the cold, rain, and wind of a miserable winter our staff dug irrigation ditches, laid pipe and associated wiring, put down sod, and did all the things required to ensure that the new turf would take hold and be ready for the opening. Glen has done several renovation projects the last few years but none of the scope and with the complexity and time pressures of this one. Despite the amount of time spent on the practice area project, Glen and staff have still been able to get the golf course in excellent shape for the start of season-no small task. If you see Glen on the course, let him know what you think of the job his guys have done over the past several months.
