wanted to take this opportunity to pass along an update on the status of the Fitness Center

and Golf Shop facility. Since lightning struck the building on May 3rd, the information about damage to the building seems to be changing constantly. We have tried to keep you updated along the way, but several times we drafted an update notice and before we could send it out the information had changed.

The fire damage was contained in the attic above the second floor in the building, but the additional water and smoke damage have greatly increased the scope of the repairs. At this stage contractors are having to remove a majority of the sheetrock, spray foam insulation, carpet, tile, and most of the furnishings in the facility that were damaged. As an example of the project scope, in order to get to the 20+ foot ceiling in the Golf Shop, scaffolding had to be erected in order to remove the ceiling and walls

so workers could scrape the smoke damaged spray foam insulation from the underside of the roof and the walls. We anticipate the demolition portion of the project will be complete in June. Once the damaged material is removed, a structural engineer will evaluate the damage to the building framing and make recommendations on the repairs required. We will then work as quickly as possible to get the facility repaired and available for our members and guests.

We are very proud of this facility that has been used and enjoyed by so many of our members over the past two years, and we want to restore it to its previous condition as soon as possible. We appreciate your continued patience during this process, and we will continue to update you on the status of the repairs. In the meantime, we will not be charging any Fitness dues until we can provide facilities for you to utilize.

e had wonderful turnouts for our annual Egg Hunt and Easter Brunch

events last month, and thanks to all those who attended for making both events huge successes. Congratulations go out to all the winners in the LGA’s Member-Member tournament, the SMGA’s Ringer event, and the SMGA Interclub team that played well enough to win on our home course last month. Great job in taking advantage of the home field advantage!

The start of our bulk-heading project in front of the clubhouse was delayed by a few days because of the rain, but the work is going smoothly and should be complete soon. The renovation of the men’s locker

room in the former golf shop should also be wrapping up this month, and the renovation of the ladies’ locker room will also be ongoing.

Events to look forward to in May include the SMGA Scramble on Saturday the 6th, the Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday the 14th, Live Music in the Courtyard on Thursday the 18th, and the MGA’s Member-Guest event on the 19th through 21st. The month ends with Memorial Day weekend, and the club will be open on Monday the 29th and closed on Tuesday the 30th.

We look forward to seeing you at the club soon.

other Nature cooperated again and thirty-six teams participated in the 2017 Weston Lakes Member Guest tournament. The

crawfish, appetizers, and Saturday evening meal were excellent. About twenty-five ladies participated in the diamonds jubilee putting contest - Julia Case and Joann McCord were the finalists and Julia became the first Case in modern times to win a putting contest.

olynesian dancers were the hit of this year’s Progressive Dinner, which incorporated a Luau theme. Members and their guests

began the Luau at the home of Les & Dana Sarles with Hawaiian cocktails and appetizers. Welcome leis were given to everyone as they arrived. They were then treated to a fantastic show of Hula and Fire dancers. A few “willing and unwilling” guests were taught a Hula dance to the delight of on-lookers. The next portion of the progression, members and guests went to five separate homes for the dinner portion of the evening. Hostesses were Louis & Kevin Stoerner, Orlando & Jean Lobo, Jerry & Mary Kanney, Ted & Nancy Case, and David & Earlene Hopkins. The evening ended with delicious desserts at the home of Carol and Ty Fairbanks. The Luau, planned by Dana Sarles, was a great way to begin the summer vacation season.

y now you should have received an email from the Emergency Management about the preliminary changes to the flood plain

map. If you did not receive this email please call City Hall at 281-533-0907 and let Jenni know. She will make sure you get the email and get put on the list.

The repeater for the radios, has been tested and is working. This way if the City looses power, the EMC will still have the ability to communicate. Speaking of communication the City of Weston Lakes is in the process of setting up communication with the local fire department.

It is hurricane season. You should also have received an email from EMC with a link for hurricane preparedness. A couple of reminders are, you should always have extra food and water on hand along with a medical kit. Remember to trim back trees which might harm your house or cars. Once again let City Hall know at 281-533-0907, if you did not receive this email.

Watch for the swim lesson email that will be coming out this month. Once again the space is limited and the lessons should start sometime in July.

Emergency Management is an important part of our Weston Lakes community, it is very important that people like you become part of the EMC. For more information about the Emergency Management give City Hall a call and ask for Jenni at 281-533-0907.

As always, remember that school is out so children are out and about, please watch your speed.

Mary Rose Zdunkewicz MayorThe WLWA Community Foundation awards scholarships and grants

to well-deserving students each year in May. This year 10 students were given awards at an evening meeting on May 17. Students and their families and guests were introduced and students were given the opportunity to answer questions so that the membership could get to know them better. Levi Malone was the recipient of a four-year scholarship. Grants were awarded to Katelyn Clack, Brayden Dinkler, Devyn Green, Lauren Hall, McKensey Keen, Brooke Massegee, Emily O’Neill, Taylore Rainer, and Christa Reinhardt. The WLCC Women’s Association and Community Foundation would like to congratulate each of these bright young people and wish them a successful future.

No meetings are scheduled for June, July or August. The next meeting will be held on September 19 where new officers will be elected. New officers will assume their duties in January, 2018.

The WLWA is open to all women who live in Weston Lakes. Meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except June-August) and are held at the WLCC at 10:00 am. Programs are educational and interesting. We would like to encourage all women to come visit.

MGA Welcomes New MembersThe Weston Lakes Senior Men's Golf Association welcomed

several news members to our organization last month. New members include: Jim Self, Joe Hinojosa, Rick Russo, and Todd Segmond. Our group is open to any man 55 years old or older with a Weston Lakes golf membership. Our main goal is to have fun, so we welcome any golfer no matter your handicap.

Weston Lakes WINS Interclub MatchThe Weston Lakes SMGA hosted the Westside Senior Interclub Golf Association's (WSIGA) Interclub match on April 20th. Congratulations to our team which consisted of Clay Anderson, Richard Delmar, Tom Gerber, Mark Griffith, John Kemper, Rick Kimbrell, Rick Oneto and Harry Wilson. The team placed 1st in the competition against seven other country club teams. The match was a great success due to our WSIGA representatives Roy Allen and Rob Yarbrough, who organized the event. In addition, Dick Farris, Gary Martin, and Foster McArthur volunteered to assist by orienting visiting team members and making them feel welcome to our great facility. The next Interclub match will be May 18th, and will be hosted by Sweetwater Country Club. 2017 SMGA Scramble TournamentThe Weston Lakes Senior Men's Golf Association held its annual Scramble Tournament on May 6th. We had a great turn out with 15 foursomes. The weather was perfect and the competition was very close. There was only a three stroke difference between first and sixth place. A special thanks goes out to Keith Simmons and his staff for facilitating the event, especially considering that the tournament was held only two days after the pro shop was hit by lightening.

oy! Joy! Joy! How else could one describe the incredible day we had touring the Beautiful gardens along the golf course while

enjoying such wonderful company? If you didn’t hear the riotous laughter and happy chatting over the soothing breezes of the Brazos as we caravanned through the golf course trail you might have to check your hearing. A huge thanks to those amazing home owners that flung open their garden gates to our merry band: Willie Walton, Annette Lese, Sharon DeVito, Kevin Stoener, Sharon Gormanson, Nancy Case and Rhea Ragle. We are so impressed by your talents and diligence in procuring such lovely yards. We started off on the club patio with an installation ceremony for next year’s board and wrapped up a great day with a delicious al fresco luncheon at Dekkers. Well done Janet & Kathy!

Now that the board is officially adopted, we will be meeting next week to get the planning started for another great year of Garden Club fun. So set your calendars for the fourth Tuesday of each month starting in September and we will look forward to welcoming you back for more fun, education and adventure as we celebrate the 25th year of the Weston Lakes Garden Club. And remember, you and your neighbors are always welcome – even if they actually garden!

s many of you know, on the evening of May 3rd, our Fitness Center was struck by lightning. While no one was hurt during the

incident, the lightening strike caused an active fire in the attic space above the second floor of our facility. The active fire was contained to the attic, however, the majority of damage was caused from large amounts of smoke and the water used to extinguish the fire. Our third party service provider has done a phenomenal job ensuring we have a safe and clean environment by removing all damaged materials from the building. We are so grateful for the quick actions of the firefighters and the professionals hard at work to help us return to normal operations!

At this time, our Weston Lakes management team is working to find a solution to accommodate Fitness Members during the repairs that will

transpire. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and assure you our Fitness Center’s priority is to our Members! In the meantime, we will do our best to send updates frequently; you can find regular updates on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/wlccfitnesscenter/

OOTS AND BLING WAS A BLAST!

It was a truly memorable evening, April 29th at the Weston Lakes Country Club, as Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful (“KWLB”) held its first annual Boots & Bling Gala event to raise funds for future educational and beautification projects for our Weston Lakes community. KWLB is an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful which is part of the Keep America Beautiful program designed for communities to take greater responsibility for improving community environments through education, beautification and volunteerism.

Upon entering the theme decorated courtyard, so incredibly done by Earlene Hopkins Decoration Chair and her committee, guests were greeted by the Dana Sarles, Gala Chair. Guests enjoyed browsing a range of silent and live auction items during the cocktail hour. As dinner began, Carol Fairbanks, Chair and President of KWLB, welcomed guests and ushered in the evenings theme.

After a wonderful dinner, the evening continued to the live auction portion. KWLB Board member Nancy Case, introduced auctioneer and local resident Bob Sandefur, who then auctioned an array of international and domestic vacation packages, exceptional sports memorabilia and various services & merchandise that were generously donated by many local residents and businesses to benefit the cause.

By the end of both live and silent auctions, assembled by Auction Chairwoman Lynn Lipp, it was evident that the Boots & Bling event was a smashing success, raising over $26,000 from ticket sales, silent and live auctions and monetary donations as well.

The sold out event filled the Weston Lakes Clubhouse that had been generously donated by Mike & Kay Surface, and a majority of the crowd stayed until the end of the event to dance the night away to a live band, which included a few of our local residents, Chuck Lipp and Ty and Carol Fairbanks. Many of the long-tenured residents of Weston Lakes attending believed the Gala was one of the best and most successful events ever held in the community.

Carol Fairbanks said “We are both excited and humbly gratified at the outpouring, and generosity, from our Weston Lakes community in support of an excellent cause that benefits all of our residents.” Dana Sarles, also one of KWLB’s board members added “A lot went into the planning and execution of the Gala. Our volunteers worked tirelessly to produce a perfect evening for all and we couldn’t have done it without them.”

If you are interested in volunteering to help the Keep Weston Lakes Beautiful effort, please contact Carol Fairbanks at 805-558-0533 or [email protected]

Interclub this month is at Falcon Point on June 22. Be sure to sign up with Wendee.

June Birthdays : Mona Pope - June 3, Caroline Macdonald - June 22, Penelope Murphy - June 26, Nancy Wood - June 30.

ummer is officially here and the temperatures are starting to get hot. The MGA held their annual member/guest in May

and the golf course was is in great condition. The rains we received in early spring have helped us fill in some of the weak areas in the rough. The maintenance staff has been busy keeping up with the mowing and edging to keep the course in good shape and as always please repair your ball marks and fill your divots with sand.
