June 4th is PENTECOST at The Parish! Please join us for a very special Pentecost service planned for us. It is filled with special music and meaningful liturgy shared by many in our congregation. It will be the perfect way to begin our summer worship services.

Please remember that our Sundays through Labor Day are CASUAL DRESS. Come in your comfy clothes and enjoy spending Sunday mornings with friends and family. There is a sweet, sweet spirit in our place of worship which is enhanced by your presence.

The 2017 General Assembly is just over one month away and there are a multitude of ways to get ready to be ONE with a few thousand other Disciples. •Study the ONE text: John 17:20-21a using the studies provided by seminary scholars •Pick out the ONE learning community that most interests you – and while you’re at it, pick ONE Sunday afternoon workshop, too •Be ready to worship as ONE •Look for the notice of the ONE docket being posted online so you can read about all the ways we fulfill our call to be ONE •Get your red clothes or your chalice couture on and post a selfie with #DOCWeAreOne

It’s time to head to ISRAEL… well kind of anyways! This June join us on a WILD

ADVENTURE through the Israeli wilderness with Moses, Malachi and others as we

learn about the message of God’s goodness for us! We will join with others in the

marketplace as we eat foods like Moses and the Israelites ate. We will play game

and learn songs together as we celebrate each day! Join craftspeople as they

teach about what life was like and meet MOSES as we cross the Red Sea,

live through a bunch of plagues and then find the 10 Commandments. You won’t

want to miss a moment!

Registration is FREE! Come at 545p on June 13th and we will get you all checked in.

VBS is a co-sponsored event between The Parish and FUMC. And don’t forget we

need lots of youth and adult volunteers to transform Jacksboro into Israel!

Can you help? Email Alinda today ([email protected]).

Summer Youth Director

Hello Jacksboro Parish my name is CHRIS KAHLMORGAN and I will be serving as the Youth Director this summer. I would love to share with you a little bit about myself. I have grown up in the Disciples of Christ church for the last 25 years. I started going to church in 1992 at Rush Creek Christian Church in Arlington TX. I have been doing youth ministry for 15 years. I have served in many different roles in other Disciples churches over the last 15 year as well. In my spare time I work for Discount Tire and watch the Dallas Cowboys, Stars, Mavericks and New York Yankees. I, like your senior minister, am a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan. I look forward to meeting with all of you over the next few months.

Peace,

Chris

2017 Graduating Senior Scholarship

submitted by Brian Davenport

Congratulations to Mr. Filo Ponce!!! He is the 2017 selection for the Jacksboro

Parish’s annual Lord’s Acre Scholarship. Filo’s record of academic achievement,

service, school involvement, and work experience distinguished him among a

worthy list of other applicants. The scholarship committee feels great confidence

in his ability to continue his academic success at Texas State University. We are

very proud of Filo, and wish him the best in his bright future.

PARISH SITE COMMITTEE UPDATE

Lots of work has been going on behind the scenes since we last visited with you. We have been revising and adjusting the plans to best fit the needs of the Parish.

At this point, we have finally gotten the Gross Maximum Price of the cost of our upgrades. We have cut and readjusted through value engineering to get a final product we hope you will all the proud of.

The building will have something for everyone. First it will address the needs of our youth program. It will provide them with ample space for weekly youth meetings, Sunday school, and a kitchen for meals. It will also address some outreach and mission needs by providing laundry and shower capabilities.

Secondly, the church will benefit greatly from a new kitchen that will be constructed with ample space and modern commercial appliances for the many functions of the church where we like to gather and eat. This has been a need for this building for a long time, and it just doesn’t make sense to not get it done.

Finally, the new construction will alter the space of the Fellowship Hall. It will provide us with more room for serving and will allow for us to make new restrooms that ADA compliant to help our congregation and visitors.

This construction also had a couple of additions that we felt were necessary moving forward. Some of these improvements were rewiring the Fellowship Hall. Replacing the light fixtures in the Fellowship Hall with LED lighting and replacing the ceiling due to the difficulty of trying to match the ceiling and trying to cover up water damage. A final addition will be the replacing of all the fogged windows in the Fellowship Hall with new ones. It just didn’t make sense to do this new construction and still be unable to see through the foggy ones.

The Parish Site Committee and many church members are recommending all of these projects be completed now because the cost will only be rise and this is the right time to take on a project of this magnitude. With all projects being completed the Gross Maximum Price, can’t be any higher; could be reduced, is 856,000. The denominational leadership of the two churches and a few contributions to the project has already gathered over 500,000 dollars. You can see this leaves the congregational members some work left to do. There could be some more denominational dollars, but it’s our time to step up. I don’t think anyone wants to stop the momentum and energy this project has created for the Parish.

I know some of you are asking…How can I do my part? Its simple you can simply make a one time donation by check. Simply tag in the memo line Parish Building Fund. Others may want to make a weekly or monthly pledge. Those interested can also mail checks to the church office at P.O. Box 716 Jacksboro, TX 76458. Take some time to think this week about what you can do to make this vision a reality. We need everyone whether it is a $50.00 pledge or $10,000. Now is the time….

MDO Xtreme We ended the school year with a fun filled water play day and the kids LOVED it!

There were plastic pools, water guns, sidewalk chalk, games, and more! See a few

adorable pictures below!

MDO Xtreme graduated 10 Pre-K students this

year! We are so proud of these children and know

they have a wonderfully bright future ahead of

them. The Graduation ceremony consisted of the

children performing a couple of their favorite songs

from this year, followed by each child receiving a

specific personality award and diploma. Everyone

celebrated with a reception afterwards!

Our SUMMER program kicks off June 6th and we only have a couple of spots left!

We anticipate lots of learning activities, great memories, and laughter throughout

our summer adventures as we study the ocean and outer space!

om the desk of….

Rev. . Suzanne Case

Aristotle, teaching in Athens in about 335 BCE, said

“ The soul never thinks without a picture.”

I wonder if he had been reading the story of Ezra and Nehemiah, who lived about

100 years before Aristotle. I wonder because Nehemiah was one that seemed to take

the process of visioning seriously as he moved from being a government worker in

service to the king, to a building contractor to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

This summer we are going to delve deeper in what it means to build anew, not only

with our building campaign, but as we try new things in worship (and get your

feedback), as we try to be flexible about “things and such” and together as we join in

the retelling of Nehemiah and how his story is layered with ours.

I hope these summer months will find you with us at The Parish on Sunday mornings

as together we explore the ordinary life of Nehemiah and his God-given vision for

accomplishing the extraordinary. He shows how the life of this great ancient

visionary, determined to rebuild the ruined walls of Jerusalem, reveals

principles that can prepare us to find and follow God’s multifaceted

vision for our own lives.

I think it’s good to remind ourselves what the

ancients have said, done and invite us to continue.
