CLINICIANS CORNERA PROTOCOL FOR GENERAL ANAESTHESIA IN GOATS

Sooryadas S.1, Joju Johns2, Dinesh P.T.3 and Syam K. Venugopal4

Dept. of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

v Withhold water for 2-4 hours in adults

v Cannulate the jugular vein or ear vein for IV fluidsand anaesthesia induction

v Administer pre-emptive analgesia (Inj. Flunixineor Inj. Meloxicam) at least half to one hour beforeinduction of anaesthesia

v Give Inj. Butorphanol @ 0.1 mg/kg IM or IVv Wait for 10 minutes

v For induction of anaesthesia, administerDiazepam/Midazolam (@ 0.1-0.2 mg/kg) followedby Ketamine (@ 4-10 mg/kg) IV

v Upon induction, intubate the trachea

o Open the mouth widelyo Using the long-bladed laryngoscope or the long

throat forceps press down the tongueo Under visualisation using either the light from

the laryngoscope or with an external light source(if the throat forceps is used), pass the stylet intothe trachea

o Over the stylet, pass the appropriate size ET tubeinto the trachea. Then take off the stylet. Inflatethe cuff of the ET tube and secure the tube to

the jaw

v Keep the mouth lower than the poll region (byplacing a rolled bandage of the size of a smallpillow under the neck at the level of the pollregion) so that the saliva flows out freely

v Perform local anaesthetic (lignocaine) infiltrationalong the proposed line of surgical incision

v When the animal recovers from the previousinduction bolus of anaesthesia, administer one-fourth to half the dose of ketamine for prolonging

the period of anaesthesia

It is a conventional practice to anaesthetise

goats using xylazine at the rate similar to that given

in large ruminants (0.1 mg/kg). This results in heavy

sedation (not general anaesthesia) and most often

become complicated and life threatening. It should

be kept in mind that the recommended dose of

xylazine in goats is as low as 0.02 to 0.05 mg/kg, but

still causing severe systemic side effects like

bradycardia and hypotension. A practically safe

protocol (avoiding xylazine) for general anaesthesiafor

a healthy goat, is being described here.

Requirements

v Anaesthetics and Adjuncts

o Inj. Butorphanol (1 mg/ml presentation)

o Inj. Diazepam (5 mg/ml) or Inj. Midazolam

(1 mg/ml)

o Inj. Ketamine (50 mg/ml)

o Inj. Lignocaine for local infiltration along the site

of surgical incision

o Inj. Flunixine or Inj. Meloxicam for pre-emptive

analgesia

v Cuffed Endotracheal tube of appropriate size

(No: 4 to No: 6)

v Long-bladed laryngoscope (ideal for easy

intubation) or a Long throat forceps

v Non-flexible stylet for easier placement of

endotracheal tube into trachea

v IV Cannula and IV fluid

Anaesthetic procedure

v Fast the animal for 16-18 hours, if adult and 2-4

hours, if kids.

Page 7: June 2016 works - IVA Kerala...3 OBITUARY Sri. K. P. Nooruddin former Minister of Forest and Animal Husbandry passed away on 30th May at Kannur. His unique and brilliant way of piloting

7and the sensory pathway. Thus a multimodal

approach for analgesia is employed for the

anaesthetic/surgical procedure

v Doses of lignocaine above 8 mg/kg may cause

convulsions

v Maintenance of anaesthesia for prolonged periods

should be performed using inhalant anaesthetic

agents

Note:

v Atropine or glycopyrrolate is generally not used topre-medicate goats, because they result in thicksaliva which may block airways. It may be used ifthere is bradycardia. Since ketamine is used, andxylazine is avoided, chances of bradycardia is less

v Flunixine/Meloxicam provides pre-emptiveanalgesia; butorphanol provides analgesia andsedation; Lignocaine blocks the peripheral nerves

Dr. Varuna P. Panicker, Asst Professor of Department of VeterinaryBiochemistry, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Thrissurhas identified Antimicrobial peptides as a promising molecules to bedeveloped as drugs against MDR bacteria. The research was done under theguidance of Dr Sisilamma George. The findings has been published inInternational Journal of Peptide Research and Therapeutics. Multidrugresistant microbes (MDRs) is a matter of serious concern world wide. These

peptides can either be isolated from natural sources or designed and synthesized based on the template ofnatural peptides. The study on on ‘Molecular studies on myeloid Antimicrobial peptides in buffalo’ was donein KVASU. She identified genes of three such peptides from the buffalo bone marrow. Analogues and syntheticpeptides were also designed based on the template of natural peptides with suitable modifications in theantimicrobial domain to improve the antimicrobial potential. All the peptides were tested for its antimicrobialactivity such as, antibacterial (including MDR bacteria), antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, and anti cancerousproperty. Their antimicrobial activity was excellent with least cytotoxicity at its treatment dose and can bedeveloped as promising drug molecules.
