The councillors are all unpaid volunteers who give up their time for the benefit of the village and should be appreciated for their efforts. Next Parish Council Meeting : Wednesday 13 th July 2016 at 7.30 in the Memorial Hall. This will start with a ten minutes’ slot allocated for public participation. Play Area: We are waiting to hear from the Coastal Recycling Community Fund whether our application for a grant of £17,412 has been successful. If it is, we have to come up with a Contributing Third Party donation of £1,985. The very enjoyable Ide Casino Night took place to raise funds to cover this and there was huge support from the community. £1,853 was raised, from ticket sales, profits from the bar, a raffle, an auction and donations from residents who were unable to attend on the night but who wished to show their support. It was a lot of hard work to arrange this and thanks go to everyone involved, too numerous to mention! In the meantime, sorry, but the Play Area remains closed due to the unsafe surface. The village calendar details events in the village and helps the numerous social groups to prevent clashes. IDE COMMUNITY SHOP & POST OFFICE
About 70 shareholders and others attended the shops 7th AGM (the 4th since the opening of the new shop), There was the usual convivial atmosphere and over-consumption of very tasty hog roast. Simon Cain, who attends to all our accounts, reported that takings were slightly down. He attributed this fall to the Lidl/Aldi effect and perhaps to the novelty of the new shop attracting higher number of customers in its earlier years. We are though, happily, still in profit and plan to use £10,000 pounds to repay part of the loans from shareholders who lent us more than £1000. Last year we repaid £5000 to shareholders. We will also again be ring-fencing £1000 to provide grants for community projects . Details of how to apply are on the shop website www.ideshop.co.uk and are also available in the shop. David Howe, our chairman thanked all the volunteers, customers and management team for their hard work and support over the last year. David thanked Simon for donating so much of his time and he also praised the work of Penny Smith who has organised the volunteer rota so superbly for the last 7 years. Understandably, after all this time, she would like to step back from this role and pass it over or work alongside someone else. So if anyone feels they might be interested, they should please speak to Penny. Alan Saunders, Nikki Pattison and Imogen Walsh were all re-elected to the management team. David also gave special thanks to our two Post Office staff who do such a splendid job, both in coping with the demands of the Post Office, and providing the continuity necessary in an enterprise that draws on the services of over 50 volunteers. We were reminded that thanks to the work of the stock group the shop is able to offer a really good range of high quality, locally sourced, reasonably priced products (our organic milk, for example is provided direct from a local farm’s own dairy and is cheaper than the equivalent product in Sainsburys!) The Community shop and Post Office is so much more than just a
commercial enterprise.
In today’s hectic world, it’s somewhere we can meet friends and
acquaintances, exchange news and ideas, enjoy a laugh, always get a warm
welcome and a bit of help if it’s needed. It would be good if all those of
us who enjoy using the shop could spread the word, so that those in the
village who very rarely or never visit the shop might be persuaded to
come in, give us a try and so help to assure the shop’s existence into the
future. 4.
JUBILEE CLUB
We have been on our travels since the last report - off to Escot Country Park. There was much to be seen - the otters feeding time - so graceful as they glide through the water; the falconry display - these are such splendid birds, the owls flew so close to us that their wings almost ruffled our hair. It was then lunch time for us and then lunch time for the red squirrels. These delightful creatures are very different to the grey variety to be seen in my garden stealing the bird food. The park keepers are so knowledgeable about the animals and obviously had their complete trust, the squirrels would even climb up their trouser legs. One was very bold and another rather more shy. We then wandered off around the grounds. A newcomer to the park - a lynx - was not too happy, pacing around the pen. There was a wild cat and a family of wild boar, the adults forming a triangle with the babies protected from the chilly wind. It was then time to find our way around the maze, visit to the Saxon village (huts with wattle and daub walls) and many things of interest to be seen.

The 9th May was the day to celebrate the 39th birthday of our club. A good gathering of members were entertained by Past Time Players, a group who liked to be nostalgic about the '50s and '60s. Well those times struck many memories for us all from rationing to Rock and Roll, the Coronation, Saturday morning pictures (not all parents approving, describing it as a flea pit). There were such films as Davy Crockett, Charlie Chaplin, The Tiller Girls, sitting there in a cloud of smoke, going to the cheap seats at the front, then when the lights went down moving to the back and seeing the film the second time round! We all stood to attention for the National Anthem. Petrol came off rationing in 1950 and the first Hillman car (shiny green with wooden dashboard), motor bikes and side cars. The excitement of the annual charabanc trip to the seaside with everyone contributing towards the picnic. One elderly couple bringing a bag of gooseberries! As we travelled along we sang such songs as Its a Long Way to Tipperary. In those days people used to sing and whistle in the streets. On arrival at the beach the men went off to the pub and the children made their way down to the sand. Girls, tucked their skirts into their knickers to paddle in the sea. Children could go off to play and no one would ask them where they had been. There was the Six Five Special, Rock and Roll, the starched petticoats, drain pipe trousers and winkle picker shoes, the toes stuffed with wet bronco toilet paper. Wow what memories! During May Adrian, our Church Support and Mission Worker, will be in Cuba. Cuba is a country where little has changed over a good few years, but where, as relations with the US thaw, much is likely to be taking place. Depending on your view of McDonald’s and Starbucks this could be good or bad. Over the next month at the Hub@Ide, there is also plenty happening; events we hope you will be able to join us at. Underpinning it all however is our desire, to be followers of Jesus by being good news and by serving those around us, in Ide and beyond. As some of you will know, Wendy or community worker has taken quite unwell and is not likely to be with us until after the summer. Please prayer for her. We are grateful therefore to folk in the community who have really stepped up and are helping us to keep the programme going....and a full programme it will be, including 4 days of August Holiday Activities, vinyl records workshops, the opening of our new quiet room facilities, of course our Sunday Club, plus all the activities for June below. Behind all the activities remains our simple desire, as Jesus called us to do, to serve the community in the ways requested and needed, not ways we decide upon. Therefore, if the activities we mention bring forth ideas please tell us, we will see what we can do. We cannot always promise massive change, but, perhaps, as Cuba may discover that is not a bad thing.

The Fete will be held on the 11th June, starting at 2pm on the Village Green. There will be maypole dancing by Ide School children, singing by Jasmine and Charlotte, an egg throwing competition and, of course, a tug-o-war. Teas will be served and there will be a bar and BBQ. There will be stalls and games and a chance to Build a Queen at the Twinning Tent, with Messy Church assisting by making crowns. The Fete has a royal theme to enable us to celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday. She herself sadly is unable to attend but a deputy is taking her place! To complete the day there will also be an Art & Craft Exhibition and Flower Festival in the Church. Art and craft works will be accepted in the Church on Friday, 10th June, when flower arrangers will also be able to do their displays. Please contact Ann Boyce regarding paintings, pictures, etc. We would be grateful for any items for the stalls on the Green - cakes, books, 'unwanted' gifts, jams or toys. If you leave them in the Church we will make sure they end up on the appropriate stall. The money raised is in aid of Ide Church and FORCE (our local cancer charity). Following the Church's annual meeting, Sue Cloke and Matthew Spivey are now our Churchwardens and Mary Bradley is the Secretary. The church organ has recently been looked at and unfortunately asbestos was found in the blower which means that it will have to be replaced. It looks as if we may be able to have a second-hand one which will reduce the expense. There will be no Messy Church this month as there will be a Fete instead and children's activities there. The next Messy Church will be on Saturday, 15th July , when we shall have a picnic on the Green. More details in next month's Ide Times. Brenda Spivey

IDE MEMORIAL HALL By the time you read this the Hall will have had its AGM. Work is in progress to get a grant to update the hall, which will make it a much better facility for the village. Recently documents came to light showing that the land for a Parish Room was leased in 1925. This became the Memorial Hall in 1948. Greetings all. Those of us who for various reasons are not crossing the channel for the bi-annual twinning visit to our friends in Normandy would like to take this opportunity to say Bon Voyage to those who are making the trip! Best wishes for calm crossings, and we're sure you will all have a great time - our French 'copains' (friends) will no doubt take excellent care of you and there are sure to be some amusing tales to tell on your return, which no doubt will be detailed in the July issue of the august journal that is the Ide Times! A local beekeeper was phoned (he supplies the village shop with honey), and he has taken the swarm away with the queen but he will come back and hopefully collect all the bees that are flying around. Hopefully in the evening they will form another swarm that can be collected.

Alphington Players Donation We were very pleased recently to receive £500 from Alphington Players from the funds raised by their excellent pantomime. A lot of Ide Lane Surgery patients and staff enjoy going to this every year, and one member of staff (Julie) has been in it for the past few years. A big thank you to the Players and everyone who contributes to the fundraising. Coffee Morning and Book Sale Thursday 9th June Don’t forget our Coffee Morning and Book Sale in Alphington Village Hall from 10.30a.m. Do come along to enjoy coffee and cakes, buy some books and have a go on the tombola (in lieu of a raffle). Age UK Exeter will be there with an information stall. Carers News At our last Carers Group Jeff Merrett from DreamAway came to talk to us. DreamAway is a local charity which helps people with illnesses or disabilities and their carers to have a holiday. This can be in one of their caravans at Sandy Bay or it can be financial help towards other kinds of holiday. The June group will be on Tuesday 21st, 6.30 at the surgery. Sponsored Bike Ride By the time you read this, the Ide Lane Friends Sponsored Bike from Exeter to Cockwood will have taken place, with surgery staff and their families and volunteers taking part. Tales from the smallholding - part two Penny Smith In my former life I had a nine acre smallholding in the wilds of Cornwall where we kept a few cattle, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and pigs. Pigs were always a bit of a challenge but great fun as they always seem to want to make you laugh and have great characters but dreadful manners. We used to buy young rare breed pigs to rear on for meat, which seems perverse except that if no one bought them there would be no point in breeding them and these rare breeds would soon die out.
The pigs were initially bought to clear a large area of very scrubby land where we wanted to grow vegetables and create a garden. We acquired a huge ribbed metal grain storage bin which we laid on its side and filled with straw which gave shelter from the elements. Other than that the pigs had free range and were great diggers. They excavated a stone settlement complete with flints, two gold sovereigns and a half sovereign. Interestingly the sovereigns were from Australia. At the time of the Australian gold rush in the middle of the 19th century, it was deemed safer to turn the gold into coin on behalf of the Royal Mint which was then sent back to UK and used as British currency. People used to hide the sovereigns in the stone walls of their houses as insurance against hard times and they would have had a great deal of value to those who hid them, but later generations wouldn’t have known about them when they demolished walls to alter the houses. Our first foray into the world of pigs was with six small Tamworths who are ginger hairy beasts with wonderful temperaments. They loved human company and would stand stock still for ages to be scratched.They would often nudge under the electric fence to come and play in the yard with the dogs, playing silly head butting games and squealing at the fun of it all. They loved attention of any kind and always seemed to be happy and smiling, it is said that you can tell your troubles to a pig as they seem to listen very attentively. Tamworth were the pigs of choice for many years although their meat is inclined to be fatty and rather dark, it has a flavour like no other and crackling that made you as happy as the pigs always seemed to be. 14.
We did try other breeds and fell in love with Gloucester Old Spots. Unfortunately they were great escape artists and impossible to keep in one place. My abiding memory of them is trying to round them up when they escaped into our newly planted bit of garden and did what pigs do best which isdig. As the area was huge and the pigs very fast, the only way to catch them seemed to be with a rugby tackle which resulted in screams from both human and pig. Eventually they were all rounded up but we stuck to Tamworths after that. The main drawback of keeping outdoor pigs is that they get sunburn and quite happily lie out and sunbathe oblivious to the damage they are doing. We provided lots of shade, sun cream on ears, backs and noses but also a mud wallow. A large hollow would be excavated and filled with water which soon puddled. They would roll, play, snort and nose dive in this then often fall asleep in the mud having exhausted themselves. They loved to play mud fights with humans too, having mud balls thrown at them always eli cited squeals of delight. A joy to watch and sheer piggy heaven for them. Generations of pigs cleared two acres of land for us and as it was cleared we created garden, but that’s another story…..

A RED KITE
On Friday, 13th May, I saw a red kite near New Buildings, College Lane, which was probably passing through this area. I wondered if anyone walking around the world also spotted this rare bird. Peter Satterley In the United Kingdom, red kites were ubiquitous scavengers that lived on carrion and rubbish. Shakespeare's King Lear describes his daughter Goneril as a detested kite, and he wrote "when the kite builds, look to your lesser linen" in reference to them stealing washing hung out to dry in the nesting season. In the mid-15th century, King James II of Scotland decreed that they should be "killed wherever possible", but they remained protected in England and Wales for the next 100 years as they kept the streets free of carrion and rotting food. By the 20th century, the UK breeding population was restricted to a handful of pairs in South Wales, but recently the population has been supplemented by re-introductions from the continent. The reintroductions in the Chilterns have been a particular success. Between 1989 and 1993, 90 birds were released and by 2002, 139 pairs were breeding there.They can commonly be seen taking advantage of thermals from the M40 motorway. Another successful reintroduction has been in Northamptonshire, which has become one of their strongholds.

THE WEST TOWN FARM COMMUNITY TRUST NEWS The orchards and the woodland are in full bloom, there’s lots of calves, lambs and piglets running about and the swallows are starting to nest. There’s never been a better time to visit the farm. How fortunate that it’s Open Farm Sunday on Sunday the 5th of June . How fortunate also that Open Farm Sunday is free to enter! As you might be able to tell we’re all very excited for Open Farm Sunday. Some of you may have noticed that we’ve reduced down our program of public events this year, so it’s actually been 8 months since we welcomed you all for Apple and Pumpkin day. With this in mind we’ve been working extra hard on this event. We have all the usual activities: Tractor trailer rides, story telling, BBQing, Meeting the animals as well as Poco Drom and a few other seasonal surprises. There will be a BBQ and Cafe and best of all we’ll have a full chiller of our produce with some great discounts. We think that Open Farm Sunday is a fantastic initiative, all about connecting eaters with producers it sits very well with our own ethos. We love talking about farming so bring your questions with you.
