The Latest Word from the Downey Adventist ChurchTRANSCRIPT
June is the month for graduations, and we
have quite a few from our church that will be march-ing to get their diploma. Congratulations to all our graduates! While this is truly an exciting time that is filled with commence-ment speeches, gifts and family gatherings, gradu-ations are also a time of change. They are consid-ered a rite of passage that teaches us that life will not be the same for all those walking with their caps and
gowns. Someone who fin-ishes high school might go on to college which could mean moving away from home and experience an independence that was once unknown to them before. A person graduating from college will probably enter the workforce which means paying for their own bills and begin to develop the life that they want to live.
Heraclitus famously said,“the only thing con-stant is change.” However, people are often
uncomfortable with the unknown that comes with change. We often feel a need to know our future, or we hope that life can stay the same. Thankfully, while we may not know our future, we have a God that does. The Bible says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

The Joy of GenerosityHe who has received much should also give much. It is essential to give a goodly part of what God has allowed us to accumulate. Otherwise greed and miserliness will seize our hearts and minds. Furthermore, by not giving generously, we will miss the many joys that generosity brings to us.
Let us not cheat our-selves of those bless-ings.

Communion
Our Communion service will be
June 27th. This is
a time to reflect on what Jesus did for us as he said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:51).” =
Grad Luncheon
June 6th we will
have a luncheon in honor of our graduates. We are bringing in some Mexican food. So make plans to stay after the service. We’ll have some good
food and an oppor-tunity to fellowship with each other and say congratulations to our graduates. =

able lessons that come from learning to deal with change. The first one is to realize that we are not in control of our lives. While we all predict and plan for the future, only God knows it. It teaches that we need to allow God to be in control and therefore, there is no need to preoccupy our minds with the future. Knowing that God is in control allows us to appreciate the present moment, so we can enjoy the life that God has given us today. Secondly, it teaches us faith. We can trust that while God has control over our lives, he always wants the best for us. We can have faith that God will
always provide, he will always help us through the times of trouble, and he always has a purpose for our lives. By having faith
that God holds our future, we are able to experience the deepest sense of peace. A peace that comes from knowing that no matter what is happening to us we are being taken care of. So whether we are gradu-ating this month or we are just living life as it comes
to us, remember that change is continuous, and we don’t need to fear it as long as God is with us.
June 6th - Graduation Sabbath - On this Sabbath, we will recognize the gradu-ates of our church. Our message will follow the text that says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans
to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Isn’t comforting to know that God is always with us, and always has a plan for us?
June 13th - Bill Aumack will bring us the message, The Double Dip Life. The Bible says you can’t serve two masters, but sometimes we are unaware that is exactly what we are attempting to do. We’ll discuss how to stay on track with keeping God number 1 and how to notice when we are going off the rails.
June 20th - A Rejoicing Father - On Father’s Day weekend, the message will bring out how to truly honor our fathers. Proverbs writes, “The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him” (Proverbs 23:24). The greatest gift to our fathers is to live our
lives well.
June 27th - Communion Sabbath - Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” (John 6:53). The Lord’s Supper teaches us our desperate need for Jesus, and his desperate solution for us.
See you when the church gathers. =

What is a Dad?
A dad is some-one who wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again.
A dad is some-one who wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.
A dad is someone who holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail.
