Welcome to the month of July! Just last week, during the last weekendof June, the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) YAC (YouthAdvocacy Committee) celebrated 10 years of hosting and running the

one-week summer youth retreats with a reunion gathering here at the Betsuin. It was great to have former participants join us from all over California and theNorthwest (Seattle, White River) area. We had Bishop and Mrs. Kodo Umezu, former Bishop and Mrs. Koshin Ogui and the BCA President, Dr. KentMatsuda, here too. It was a fun weekend for 10 years of participants who havegone through this program to meet or reacquaint.

And this month, from July 6th through the 12th, we will have 15 newparticipants joining us for the 11th Annual YAC Summer Youth Retreat. Wehave three girls who are representing Sacramento. They are Amanda Borges,Kelli Lee and Kristine Yabumoto. We also have four participants who have hadolder siblings who are alumni of our previous retreats. This year, among the 15participants, we even have two participants who are flying in from Virginia, two from Portland and one from Seattle.

This retreat is designed for students 15–18 years of age who have displayedboth responsible leadership and an interest in the Dharma. This retreat is aninteresting and innovative introduction to the teachings and traditions of

Buddhism and Jodo Shinshu. This week-long retreat will give our students anopportunity to learn and experience the Dharma teachings and rituals;understand its influence on Japanese culture; and hopefully develop anawareness of its relevance in relation to issues we face growing up in Americatoday.

It is a demanding, well-scheduled and enjoyable week of classes, services andfun events that has a well-earned reputation of being totally worth it! Theretreat is both rigorous and enjoyable for us too, for in running the retreat, theministers and minister assistants are challenged to teach proper ritual andetiquette, as well as the basic teachings of Buddhism. Midway into the retreat,we take a field trip to the Jodo Shinshu Center in Berkeley and meet with theco-director of the Center of Buddhist Education, Reverend Kiyo Kuwahara. Wethen drive to the Buddhist Churches of America to spend some time withBishop Kodo Umezu and to visit the San Francisco Buddhist Temple withReverend Ron Kobata. During this visit to the first BCA temple, we have theopportunity to go up to the stupa at the San Francisco Temple and have aservice before some of the remains of the historical Shakyamuni Buddha andalso his legendary disciples, Ananda and Sariputra.

So, if you happen to be at the Betsuin during that week and see our group ofyoung “retreaters,” please introduce yourself and welcome our participants toSacramento.

Happy July! Its hard to believe we are in the seventh month of the yearalready! As I am writing this article, I have a friend sitting near me.This friend is someone that I haven’t known for very long, but we have

become very, very good friends. Her name is Stevie and she is a black lab thatbelongs to the Nitta family. Often our Betsuin president, Gordon Nitta, wouldbring Stevie with him when he comes here to help… and especially sinceGordon retired at the beginning of this year, he is almost always helping uswith some kind of project or program at the Betsuin.

So in the last six months especially, it has been a delight for me to spend manydays together with Stevie. We have become very close and Stevie, I feel, isalready an irreplaceable part of my life. Stevie is 3 years old and she is so smart

and so gentle. What I’ve found justadorable is that Stevie has grown tojust love coming to the Betsuin!

Gordon says that from the momentshe wakes up in the morning, sheseems to be looking forward tocoming to the Temple. And whenGordon says to her, “Stevie, do youwant to go to church?” she just jumpsup and with tail wagging, she runs tothe door.

When they arrive in the Betsuinparking lot, the moment he opens thedoor, she jumps bounding out of thecar and running full speed for thefront door. Once he opens that door, she can’t wait to get into the office togreet everyone. She is always happyto see people and loves to be petted.

Gordon said on the rare occasion that I am not in my office, Stevie runs into myoffice with tail wagging… and then comes back out looking sad that I was notin.

Wouldn’t it be great if we all felt the kind of JOY that Stevie feels each time shecomes to the Temple? It has always been my hope that our Temple should feellike our second home. That coming here should be as comfortable as returningto our own homes.

And everyone at the Betsuin who knows Stevie is so happy to see her. Herenthusiasm and her joy are contagious. Once she makes her rounds and sayshello to everyone, if we are busy working or deep in conversation, Stevie justsits by our side or lies down nearby as if patiently listening.

Even when I talk to her, she tilts her head, listening intently… trying tounderstand what I am trying to say. And the whole time, she is never judgingme, saying or doing hurtful things. And if I should have to scold her for any

reason, she never holds a grudge. She continues to accept all of us, just as weare… just by being herself.

Reverend Bob has said that I am a lot like Stevie. Every day I look forward tocoming to the Betsuin. In that, I know he is right. I always happily lookforward to seeing so many of the good friends I’ve made here. I always try tobe here early… and Reverend Bob has said, like Stevie, I like to greet everyone Ican. I’ve tried to be patient and listen to what people are trying to say to me. Ifever I felt scolded, I’ve tried never to hold a grudge… and just be myself…simply trying to accept everyone as they are. But I know in my heart that Stevieis much better than I am at doing these things.

And it has been my quiet hope that, like Stevie, my enthusiasm and myenjoyment in being here might also be contagious. It will always be my hopethat all of our members will feel that their Temple is their second home. Andthat coming here is a kind of homecoming.

So, in closing, if you are ever at the Betsuin and see a beautiful black lab, itmight be our Betsuin dog, Stevie. She loves people… so don’t be afraid tointroduce yourself to her! All of our temples would be amazing if we all lookedforward to coming with the same joy and enthusiasm as Stevie.

Greetings and welcome to the month of July from the Legacy EndowmentFund Board of our Betsuin. It seems like just yesterday that we wereringing in a New Year. And now, having closed out the Dharma School

term with another wonderful service and picnic at Land Park, our Betsuin turnsits focus on delivering the 11th Annual Youth Advocacy Committee (YAC)retreat, tent raising, Obon Odori, and Hatsubon Memorial Service.

The warm and long daylight hours of summer are here. The construction of ourtent signals our preparations for Obon dancing, the appreciation of Dharmafriends having passed, and our annual Bazaar. In many ways, the raising of ourtent can remind us of the colorful history and unbreakable spirit of our Betsuin. There is a common Japanese expression, “Okagesama, Genkidesu,” that capturesthe symbolism of our tent. The spirit of Okagesama represents the countlessefforts needed to build and care for our tent and the wonderful comfort andshade that it provides.

Literally translated, okagesama means: “Because I live within the great shade ofmany people, I am fine.” When we stop to reflect upon such an idea, we can seethat we live within the “great shade” or “okage” of the many lives of themembers of our Betsuin, past and present. Founded in 1899, the SacramentoBetsuin began with a small group of dedicated families who shared the visionto nurture, cultivate, and care for the Dharma here in Sacramento. Our Templehas survived and thrived over the years because generations, past and present, have given so much to sustain the Betsuin. Whether providing religiousservices and education, developing youth and adult activities, supporting thesports and scouting programs, our Betsuin has represented the physical andspiritual heart of our community.

Each financial gift to your Legacy Endowment Fund helps to fund majorimprovements to our physical plant, support educational programs andscholarships, to support ministerial development, and to provide maintenanceof the temple shrine. On behalf of the Legacy Endowment Fund Board, thankyou for your generous support.

Sakura Gakuen held its 95th Graduation and Promotion Ceremony on June6 in the kaikan. It was a celebratory occasion as the students worked hardthroughout the school year learning to read, write and comprehend

Japanese. The students (and parents!) also experienced many cultural events, including Undokai (Sports Day), Oshogatsu (New Year) celebration, a speechcontest, a field trip to the Japanese Tea Garden and Cherry Blossom Festival inSan Francisco, and Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) celebration, among many in-class teachings.

During the ceremony, advanced youth class student Fernando Gil, who hasattended Sakura Gakuen for eight years, gave a speech including four thingsthat shaped his experience: “language, culture, friendship and Japan.” He willtake all that he’s learned from Sakura Gakuen and will travel to Japan thissummer.

As the Saturday hallways are now quiet of the kinder students running aroundwith their tomodachi (friends), and no wafting smells of yakisoba coming fromthe advanced class, we hope the students continue to study Japanese andbroaden their horizons.

The Monday adult class program celebrated the end of the semester with apotluck dinner on June 15.

Visit us at the Ginza booth at the Japanese Food and Cultural Bazaar in August!

Hello from Dharma School! This month our 8th grade students arefeatured with their thoughts about topics discussed in class with theirteacher, Carolyn Murata.

THE GOLDEN CHAIN SAYS THAT I SHOULD HELPTHE HOMELESS PEOPLE I MEET.Lauryn DeGuzman: The Golden Chain says that I must help people who are inneed. It states that you should be kind and gentle to every living thing. Even bysaying nice things about them or helping people if they fall is being kind andgentle. The Golden Chain also states that you must protect all who are weakerthan yourself. You can show this by helping someone old or taking care of ababy. Just simple things like these are examples of things you can do to helppeople in need.

WHY I THINK A PERSON CAN OR CANNOT GAINENLIGHTENMENT (NIRVANA) IN TODAY'S SOCIETY.Ashley Nguyen: A person can find enlightenment in today’s world in manyways. For example, if you find the good in all people and are nice to them, youcan be enlightened. That is one way you can find enlightenment in the modernworld. Another way to find enlightenment is to help the rest of the world. Forexample, you can travel and help Third World people. These are just someways a person can find enlightenment in today’s world.

Thank you to our 8th grade students!

It’s hard to believe that the 2014–15 term has come to a close. I would like tothank Team Betsuin, teachers, TAs, students, parents, and all of our volunteersfor a wonderful year. A big “thank you” to Reiko and the Courtyard Crew forpreparing lunch each week for everyone! We have a great Dharma Schoolprogram due to the contributions of so many. Thank you all so very much!

Our last Dharma School service was held on Sunday, June 14, at William LandPark. This special service included our end-of-year picnic and the presentation

of 14 attendance awards, eighteducation awards, and other specialrecognitions.

Special thanks to three wonderfulDharma School teachers who arestepping down from their currentteaching assignments. They are SteveHiromoto, 6th grade; Leilani Ito, 9th/10th grade; and Norm Tanaka, 4thgrade. Their time and commitment isvery much appreciated. We will missseeing them in the classroom and willleave the door open for their return inthe future. Thank you, Steve, Leilaniand Norm!

This year’s Federation of Dharma School Teachers League (FDSTL) teachers’conference included a poster contest focused on the theme of gratitude. One ofthe contest winners was 3rd grader Ashlyn Wong, daughter of Dave and TinaWong. Teachers Harley and Judy Inaba presented Ashlyn with a $25 gift cardfor her winning poster, which beautifully illustrated the meaning of gratitude.Congratulations, Ashlyn, for a job well done!

We look forward to seeing everyone at Obon Odori on Saturday, July 11, andObon Hatsubon Service on Sunday, July 12. Also, Dharma School takes care ofbussing tables in the outdoor eating area during Bazaar — Saturday, August 8,and Sunday, August 9. We appreciate our parents and students coming out tohelp.

Troop 50 has been up to a lot these past couple months and has had a blastdoing so.

Memorial Day Weekend (May 25) marked Troop 50’s annual participation inthe Issei Memorial Flag Ceremony where we pay honors to the veterans whosacrificed their lives to protect our country. On May 29-31, Troop 50 embarkedon a high adventure outing to go backpacking at Fallen Leaf Lake to heightentheir physical abilities and experience in navigating through the wilderness.

A scout is helpful and Troop 50 is a great example for they assisted the WalnutGrove Buddhist Church in setting up their bazaar on June 6. The fun keepsgoing with the Lake Solano outing for the weekend of June 12–14 in which thescouts hiked the Blue Ridge Trail to keep things interesting. Patrols from thetroop also lent a hand in setting up for the SBC Bazaar on June 27. From June28–July 4, a majority of our troop’s scouts ventured to Camp Wente for summercamp. Here they attended merit badge classes, kayak and canoe, indulged invarious shooting sports, and much more.

Troop meetings will be on July 10 and 24 in the classrooms of SacramentoBuddhist Church. Everyone loves the Bazaar! Troop 50 will be pulling out all ofthe tables, chairs and equipment that will be used for the Bazaar on July 17. Onthe same day, Troop 50 will be casting for a new Senior Patrol Leader to seewho’s up for the task in which Cameron Kochi did a fantastic job this scoutingyear. That’s all for July!

BOY SCOUTTROOP 50CAMERON LUTZ

A pleasant summer greetings to you all; we certainly hope you are havingan equally pleasant summer. It is July now, so summer is just abouthalfway done. If we go way back in time, say all the way back to the

beginning of summer, way back to June, we see that California, and morespecifically Northern California, and to be even more specific, the Bay Area, isnow the proud holder of the 2015 NBA Championship Trophy with the GoldenState Warriors bringing it home with a victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers ingame six of The Finals.

This return of the trophy to the Bay has been 40 years in the making since itwas way back in 1975 when Rick Barry led the Warriors to the championshipwhile winning the MVP award. It seems like it was just yesterday when thathappened... well, not really. Way back then you would have to actually go up tothe TV and manually change the channel, and readjust the rabbit ears! And didyou know that way back when, the Warriors originated in Philadelphia, movedto San Francisco as the San Francisco Warriors, then moved to Oakland as theGolden State Warriors? AND that Wilt Chamberlain scored his record 100points in a game against the New York Knicks as a Philadelphia Warrior? Well, now you know.

Getting back to Sports Program stuff, we need to collect all the uniforms, sohere is the proper procedure for returning the uniform:1. Uniforms must be clean and completely dry before being bagged (please

remember to hang dry the uniforms).

2. Bagging Instructions:a. Adult Size Uniforms – 2-gallon clear zipper-type baggieb. Youth Size Uniforms – 1-gallon clear zipper-type baggiec. Bag the uniform so that the red jersey # shows at the top, the shorts are inthe middle, and the black jersey # shows at the bottom.

3. Write the size of the jersey on the outside of the baggie as follows: YM, YL,AS, AM, AL, AXL, AXXL.

4. Place each team’s uniforms in a separate big clean bag and mark it as fol-lows:a. Division (I League, Lil’ Hoopers, or B–E Division)b. Boys or Girlsc. Team Numberd. Coach’s Namee. Team Namef. Number of uniforms in the bag

5. Notify your Team Mom that your uniform is ready for return.

Even though we are in-between basketball seasons right now, we are busy withour usual summer activities around the church, and as usual, we always coulduse your help. Dates to remember:• July 17-19 will be Bazaar pullout and construction.• August 6 will be beef skewering• August 8–9 will be Bazaar shifts
