Kathy BurkholderOffice: Dean’s Office, Project CoordinatorYears at DCE: 3 years, 4 monthsHometown: Buhler, KansasKathy’s Family Includes: Husband Mark Appel of 28 years, sons Zach (26 who lives in Billings, MT) who will be getting married this summer, and Paul (25 and in San Antonio, TX)

April showers bring May flowers…. Which flowers are your favorite in the spring? I love irises. I love the way they look, the way they smell, and the myriad of colors. And I love that they remind me of my grandmother and old homesteads from my childhood.

Do you have any pets? Yes, we are owned by Bart, who is a black rescue pug with a “lot of attitude”. He is one part charming, one part ornery, and one part annoying. He does manage to make us smile and laugh quite a lot.

If you could be any age for a week, what would it be and why? 20 because my legs were fantastic. Ha ha, my husband wrote that. Disregard!

What is the most rewarding experience you have had and why? One of my most rewarding experiences occurred right before moving to Manhattan. I was on the executive board of our Siouxland Habitat for Humanity, and decided on a whim to lead a “Women’s Build”. I coordinated the entire project and we built a house in record time with the work almost exclusively done by teams of women working on weekends. It was a great sense of camaraderie, accomplishment, super fun, and the media gave us really incredible coverage for the duration of the build.

What was your first car? A Ford Fiesta my parents got me after I returned home from a year working in Europe. They knew they had to provide wheels, or I was going to live with them forever!

What was your most memorable Halloween costume? Let’s just say I was newly married, and weighed 30 lbs less. Can we leave it at that?

What is your favorite season and why? I love the cool, crisp days of the Fall, and the gorgeous changing colors. Plus Thanksgiving gives me the opportunity to reflect on the many things I have to be grateful for, and spend time with family. Did I mention Football??

Hannah FranzenOffice: Academic and Professional Programs, Student AssistantYears at DCE: 1Hometown: Goessel, KansasHannah’s Family Includes: Dad Dean, Mom Kris, and dog Jack

April showers bring May flowers…. Which flowers are your favorite in the spring? Gerbera daisies, poppies, and dahlias.

Do you have any pets? Yes, a large mutt named Jack. He’s 1/2 Golden Retriever, and 1/4 each German and Australian Shepard, which means that he looks intimidating, but he’s really a giant teddy bear.

What is your favorite food to eat for breakfast? On the rare occasion I actually eat breakfast, cereal is my go-to option… but it has to be the disgustingly sugary “kid” ones like Lucky Charms, Froot Loops, Cocoa Krispies, etc!

What is your favorite quote? “The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.” – e.e. cummings

What was the first job that you have ever had? I’ve worked in various capacities for our family business since around junior high, and it’s been anything from working in the meat coolers, to filing, to cleaning, to helping out online – it has great job security!
