District Round Up was held on May 4th, 2013 at George West with two 4H members participating. Lacey Stephens and Robert Rutherford competed in the Share-the-fun Musical/Instrumental category and received 1st place in the Junior Division. Great job!!

Steer Validations Dates Saturday June 15; 8-10 am Wednesday June 19; 4-6 pm

If you ordered steer ear tags then you must attend at least one of the above dates to validate your steer at the Atascosa Show Barn. All exhibitors must be present with steer(s), parent(s) or guardian. There will be scales available for anyone interested in weighing their steers.

Turkey Orders

Turkey orders for the 2014 Stock show season are due Friday, July 9th to the extension office.

$3.50 for each poult. Maximum number of birds is 75 per youth and the minimum is 25 per youth.

Turkey order form is located in the back of this newsletter.

District Horse Show – June 7th, 2013 – Robstown, Tx at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds. Good Luck to all of our contestants!! Atascosa County 4-H members participated in the District 12 4-H Rifle Match in Benavides Texas on Saturday April 27, 2013. Atascosa County participants included Junior Shooters Cort Hindes, Isabella Garcia, Shyann Meyer, Reed Foster, Montgomery Cain and Colton May. Intermediate Shooters Include Blake Foster, Jared Meyer, and Marco Garcia. Senior Shooters include Justin Meyer, Carlos Garcia, Maverick Sanders, Travis Bonner and James Seiffert. The teams and individuals are coached by Jimmy Meyer. The Atascosa County Junior team of Reed Foster, Cort Hindes, and Colton May placed 3rd at the Shoot with a team score of 232. Cort Hindes was the 2nd place junior high point individual with a total score of 144. The Senior Team of Justin Meyer, Travis Bonner, Carlos Garcia and Maverick Sanders placed 3rd overall with a score of 381.01. The Seniors will compete at the State Indoor Rifle Contest in Victoria, Tx.

Four Atascosa County 4-H Shotgun Project Participants competed in the South District 12 Shotgun Contest and the South District 12 Invitational contest held on Saturday May 11, 2013 at the South Texas Shooting Complex in Laredo Texas. In the intermediate age division Yancey Miller Participated in Trap, Skeet, and Whiz Bang in both the District 12 Shoot and District 12 Invitational Match. In the Junior Category: Nathan Ricks, Hunter Miller and Ty Hehman participated in the Trap, Skeet and Whiz Bang Contest in the District Match and Invitational Contest. Way to go Atascosa County 4-H Shotgun Shooters! Crockett County 4H Whizbang Contest Garner Kemp of Mesquite 4H participated at the Crockett County 4H Whizbang Contest in Ozona, Tx on May 11th,

2013. Garner competed in the Junior Division and received 3 plaques for:

If any volunteers would be interested in judging record books please come by the extension office during regular business hours from June 10th to June 21st. It should take approximately 1 hour per record book in order to give an honest and thorough judging.

If you are interested in being recognized for your 4-H leadership then apply for a Star Award.

Applications can be picked up at the extension office or fid one at: http://atascosa-co.tamu.edu

Deadline to turn in your Star application to the extension office is June 6th.

Star Award Interviews will be conducted July 16th at the extension office.

Juniors (8-10 yrs. Old) must apply for the Bronze Star Application.

Intermediates (11-13 yrs. old) must apply for the Silver Star Application.

Seniors (14-19 yrs. old) must apply for the Gold Star Application.

You can only win once in each age division. Selection procedure for Bronze and Silver Star will

be based upon the following criteria: 1. Applicant must be a bona fide 4-H member. 2. Must have completed three different

projects and submit a record book. 3. Participate in a Star Award Interview.

Selection procedure for Gold Star will be based upon the following criteria:

1. Must be 14-19 years old at the time of application. 2. Must have completed three different projects and

submit a record book. 3. Has participated in one or more activities in at least

three of the following areas: Method Demonstration, 4-H Presentations Contest, Citizenship Activities, Projects, Project exhibits, Camps, Leadership Labs, Public Relations, Other (fundraising, State and National Congress).

4. Applicant must have exhibited leadership skills by serving as a 4-H officer (club, county, district or state), and/or a junior or teen leader in an activity or project with or under the supervision of an adult volunteer leader.

Worth Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Star of Texas Fair in Austin, San Angelo Livestock Show, Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and Heart O’ Texas Fair in Waco).

The verification process will require 4-H exhibitors to pass an online test that measures their knowledge on quality assurance and character education content items.

All 4-Hers must take this test Quality Counts test and more information available at http://quality counts.tamu.edu 4-Hers that were intermediates last year and will be in the senior division this year must

retake the test.
