The local pool world was saddened over the last month with the loss of two long time members. Jason Shearer, son of Jerry Shearer, passed on April 22nd. Jason was a regular pool player a few years ago in the Arizona Hot Shots league and local tournament. Then, right after pool players got back from the BCA Nationals, the news broke that Davis Toothman had fallen from a brain aneurism. We also need to mention that long-time pool supporter Leon Pasquariello at Groggys has been down sick the past couple of months. We are hoping for a strong recovery by Leon. We have full results from the recently completed events in Vegas for both pool and dart players. Lots of of that money came back to Arizona in the pockets of our local players. Congrats to everyone. I also owe a big thanks to Tammie Hermanek for her help with this month’s paper. -Mike

Tres Kane wins One Pocket Madness

Tres Kane came back from an early less to win the Bullshooters One Pocket Madness event on May 5th.

The winners side saw a familiar face as Gus Briseno took the hot-seat with a 2-0 win over Bobby Emmons.

On the one loss side, Tres earned a narrow 2-1 win over Bernie Pettipiece and then followed that up with a 2-1 win over Bobby Emmons.

Tres completed his tournament run with a 3-0 win over Gus in the extended fi nal match for the tournament win.

1st place: Tres Kane $3102nd place: Gus Briseno $1703rd place: Bobby Emmons $110

Ellerman Wins Preacher Ronn’s Event

Mitch Ellerman added another entry to his resume with an undefeated run through the fi eld at Preacher Ronn’s One Pocket event on May 26th at Kolby’s Corner Pocket.

Ellerman took the hot-seat with a win over Bobby Emmons giving Bobby 9-8 and 9-7.

On the one loss side, Eric Young was bouncing back nicely from an early loss to Ellerman. After losing the fi rst game to Bernie Pettipiece, Young came back to win the match 2-1.

Next up for Young was Emmons, and after losing the fi rst game of the match it was Young winning two in a row for the 2-1 win.

Considering his past couple matches, Young didn’t seem phased by Ellerman winning the fi rst game in the tournament fi nals. Unfortunately for Young, Eller-man went on to win the next two games and swept the fi nals 3-0.

Ellerman took home $250 for fi rst, while Young settled for $140. Emmons fi lled out the cashing positions in third with $80.

The “On the Road to Vegas” Tour continued in May with two 9 ball teams earning their place in the APA National Team Championships to be held

in Las Vegas on August 16th.

Over the weekend of May 19th and 20th APA held its 9 ball Local Team Championships at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. 24 Teams com-peted for a chance to go to Vegas and compete in the National event. Two teams were left standing at the end of the weekend and will receive their entry fee and rooms paid along with $1100 in cash to spend when they get there. But it doesn’t end there. Winning teams at the National event will receive cash and awards totaling more than $1million. Teams consist of from 5 to 8 players ranging in skill level from a complete beginner to a seasoned player with many years under their belt. Gina Nowlin, the APA Phoenix league op-erator, says this is a really great way for someone who plays for fun and recreation to go to Las Vegas and compete fairly in a major tournament, and get paid for it. Everything is based on a handicap system that allows even the most nov-ice of players to have a good chance of winning their match and help their team advance in the tournament. Gina said, we have players going to Vegas this year that have only been playing pool for a couple of months. How great is that!

Throughout the year APA runs a series of tour-naments called “On the Road to Vegas”. This series of tournaments includes Singles, Doubles, and 5 player Team events that allow the win-ners the chance to go to Las Vegas and represent Phoenix in the APA National Team Champion-ships. The winners of these events are provided

entry fees, table fees, Rooms and travel assistance to get there. In the singles event held in April at the Riviera Hotel and Casino, three players competed for their share of $175 thousand in cash and prizes. This summer the Phoenix APA will send two Masters teams, four Scotch Doubles Teams, three 8 ball teams and two 9 ball teams.

The two 9 ball teams going to Vegas are:

“Shape is Overrated” – Jimmy Beaner (SL 4), Alex Martin (SL 2), Captain Artie Lewis (Skill Level 3), Will Sexton (SL 8), Jeff Currie (SL 5), and Bernie Lewis (SL 4). Chris Lewis (SL 4) and Abie Padilla (SL 5), are not shown.

“Wildcards” – Steve Hyson (SL 4), Mike Michaels (SL 4), Brad Andrews (SL 8), Co-Captain Polly Hughes (SL 4), Betty Johnson, and Marty Packham (SL 4). Captain Paul Ogilvie (SL 5) and Rae Helton (SL 2) are not shown.

Along with the 9 ball teams, two masters teams have also secured spots at the National Championships. Doc Rice, Tres Kane, and Oscar Avila make up the 1st place team and Steven Henderson, Steve Martel, Steve Stowers and Bill Norrish earned the 2nd spot.

During the the next month APA will be filling the 8 ball teams and the 8 ball and 9 ball scotch doubles spots

through tournaments in the last of the “On the Road to Vegas” Series. Congratulations and good luck to all the teams who will be playing in the championships.

Another install-ment of the APA “On the Road to Vegas” tourna-ment series goes in the books this last weekend of May. An 8 Ball Scotch Doubles tournament was held on the 27th of May to determine which 2 players will represent Phoe-nix in the APA National Team Championships in Las Vegas the week beginning August 16. There were some great players who showed up to try for the paid spot to Vegas. Ultimately, it came down to an East Valley vs. West Valley contest. Gina and Doug Nowlin, League Operators for APA here in Maricopa County, have a friendly little rivalry going on, with Gina representing the West side of Phoenix and Doug the East Side. Many times in our major tournaments it comes down to a couple of teams that play out of Mesa or Tempe taking on teams from Glendale or West Phoenix, Gina said on Sunday. This Scotch Doubles tourna-ment was no exception. Bullshooters, always a great venue to hold a qualifying tournament, hosted the event on Sunday afternoon.

Jay Jarvis and Chris Lewis who actually play out of Bullshooters with their Tuesday night teams, took on Randy Martin and Max Sperry who normally play in Gilbert on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for the winner take all final position. Each match is a race to the players combined handicap divided by 2. Randy and Max finally prevailed after a hard fought battle. Both teams played to the end and it is unfortunate that both teams couldn’t win. Randy and Max will be playing in a Scotch Doubles Tournament at the APA National Team Championships to be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada on August 16 through the 18th, compliments of the APA. They also receive $500 spending money when they get there. Good Job Guys.

On September 12, 2012 the Arizona’s Men’s Masters Dart League will be the first soft tip dart league to be inducted into the National Dart Hall of Fame.

It is only fitting that it comes as the 60th season has just begun. The league is known throughout the world as the premier soft tip dart league, and has had many great players over the 22 years of existence. More than three hundred players haveplayed in the league since its first season.

The league has been sponsored the whole time by Troy Vending and Dart Master Inc. Overthe 22 years that the league has been in exis-tence, it has paid out nearly $500,000 to the players.

The league is now played solely out of Bull Shooters, but over the years it was played at numerous great bars, includng Big Daddy’s, Jimbo’s, Santisi Brothers, Marino’s and many more.

It has survived over two decades, despite early critics who said it wouldn’t last. Many players have moved to Phoenix just to be a part of themost prestigious league in the country.

No less than 27 players have played on the National Dart Association’s Team USA, which

represents our country against the other dart countries of the world once a year. Team USA has won the last 12 years in a row and Dart Master is a proud sponsor of the team.

The league has helped Arizona become known as the top soft tip area in the country.

We are trying to get a group together to go to Iowa for the induction ceremony in September.

It is a great honor to be apart of the greatest league in the USA.

Dartitis And How To Get Past It

I have been getting a few e-mails lately asking about the Big “D” word...Dartitis. I have known many great play-ers (Eric Bristow, Mark Walsh, Richie Burnett) who have gotten it and some players who only thought they were great that got it.(Hint Hint at the cause) When I was in Univer-sity, I was very interested in Sports Psychology and took a few classes before I switched over to Athletic Therapy and I have used a Sports Psycholo-gist along the way so I have a good grasp on what I am about to share.

So what is Dartitis? A good definition I found is: Dartitis is a condition which can af-fect dart players, and severely damage their performance and results. It can be compared to the yips, an expression used to describe apparent loss of fine motor skills without any explanation. The term is used in reference to players who struggle with some kind of psychological problem with their technique and/or release of their darts. Basically, you can’t let go of the dart.

The “why” is basically that the player has become so focused on “OUTCOME” that the brain views failure as too great of a risk so prevents it. It says “If you don’t throw the dart you can’t fail” so your brain says “ALL STOP” when you go to throw. The players view of the game has become so much about winning or should I say about “not losing” that they built up way too much anxiety. I once had a guy who had it say to me “You will get it. It’s just

a matter of time” and I replied “no I won’t because I do not care about win-ning. I care about my performance” If you have read other articles from me you have heard this line before...”you can never control winning but you can control how well you play. Just because you play very well does not mean you will win.”. Crazy thought I know but very true. If go up and throw 140, 180, 160 you may say I am about to win, right? Maybe, but what if I happen to be playing Taylor and he just went 180, 180, 141 finish? Did I not just have a great performance? Yes I did. Did I win? Nope...but I was successful in doing my job so it was a positive outcome for me. A player that puts too much emphasis on winning would say he failed so he has a nega-tive outcome for the same game. An extreme example but none the less it shows my point.

I just started playing again about a year ago after functionally a year off of no competitive darts of any kind yet my game was better then it every was! I was practicing with an old cagey veter-an and he was so frustrated because he couldn’t get to be as good as he was. He asked for advice so I gave him two things to do: FORGET HOW GOOD YOU USED TO BE - because you are not that guy today and the second was : DO ALL THE THINGS THAT MADE YOU GOOD. Develop a smooth stroke and then practice your stroke hours a day again. I had my game back so fast the same way I developed it, I WORKED REALLY HARD. I am not a good dart player, I am a player that works very hard to be good. I don’t go “two years ago I would have won this shoot easy” because no one cares about yesterday, only what you do today. So how do you fix it? Stop worry-ing about winning and accept that you are now a beginner again. The good news is you have already learned some

lessons so you are not starting at zero again but you are a beginner, so do what beginners do: focus on develop-ing a smooth stroke, learn how to get your eye and hand to start talking to each other again. Easy right? yes and no.

You need to become PERFORMANCE based and not OUTCOME based. You can have great performance and lose as well as have bad performances and win...this is why you may see me be upset after a win because I did not per-form to my ability. You need to forget about throwing at “20” and change your thought to be throwing at a target. The first thing I would have you do is grab as many darts as you can - like house darts, mixed match sets etc - and throw the lot of them at the board. When I developed my throw I had 50 darts of all different weight, sizes and lengths because it did not matter. I want to make changes to my throw and that takes doing it over and over until it is the same. Until the throw is the same every time you can not hit any target. Just throw! What I used to do is throw one dart then throw every other dart at the one before it. So if one went 3 inches away, that became the new place to look. I did this for hours, days and weeks until I started to hit that other dart all the time. Once you have a smooth throw again then you can then begin to look for a real target like a big pie segment. You have to hit it 2/3 a time before you go to another segment on the board and until you can go around the board. As you progress, then you can go for small segments, then on to triples. I only throw at seg-ments, sometimes its a big segment or maybe its a little one called a triple. I know when I deliver a smooth dart, that I will hit the segment I am looking at. When I need a game shot, I do not say “ Hit the double 16 and you win” because that is an outcome statement. The mere thought of winning makes

my brain also consider losing. I say “throw this dart as smooth as you can at the green part right there” Can you somehow turn that mental statement into a negative? No way.

The bottom line is you have to start over because you now are a beginner again so do what you did to get good in the first place. You need to start over and change how you think and view the GAME of darts. People that have DARTITIS usually have developed a self image that is tied to winning. When they win they are great and when they lose they suck. If you lost every dart game you played you may not be a good dart player but it hardly reflects who you are as a person.

There is way more on the road to recovery and tons of ideas but this is a start. I heard people say they throw in the dark or they cover the board but what is this really doing? It is taking the perceived value of where the dart landed away and just having you throw. So is just throwing darts at another dart and learning that performance is much more important than winning or hitting every shot. The last thing I have to offer is this: “STOP SAYING YOU HAVE IT!” Start saying posi-tive statements such as “I am taking some time to rebuild my throw to be much smoother” “ I am taking time to become a better target hitter”.

Good luck.... Do what makes Champions be Champions and you will become a Champion.

Letter To The EditorIn response to our May story about the NLO dart leagues, Ja-mece Warner posted the follow-ing comment on our website at www.billiardndartnews.com...

I was sceptical about this new league starting, but since the league started it has ran well and I have only heard good things about it. They have brought tournaments back to Central Phoenix and is building

up the interest in dart playing again.

Not only are they catering to new and begining players as well as seasoned/mas-ter players, but they are also including the whole family. All darts players, who know me and my family, know that I have tried and tried to get my children into leagues and dart tournaments but becuase of their ages they were not allowed. NLO has wel-comed my son and he plays on 2 league nights, 1 with his dad and he plays on the new/beginner league on is own. He is able

to play his darts and share his knowledge of the game with new players and he is learning new ways to play the game and different strategies for his own game to help him improve as well.

NLO has experienced players hang around on new/beginner Tuesdays and Wednesdays to offer advice and answer any questions to those players who would like to learn from a seasoned player. They offer little tips anywhere from how to ad-just your stance to helping them learn the

outs for their ’01.

I think it’s great! (although I haven’t been there to see a league night for myself but my husband and son both play).

Mike, first congratulations to you and the Masters League on the Hall Fame Induction! My question is “Why has it been such a success and lasted this many years?

There are many reasons why the league has been so success-ful, so I will hit on a few.

First it has taken many great players in Arizona to build and sustain such a league. When I first came up with the idea, the players believed in it even though it was different from the norm.

The idea was to make a league that followed the NDA guide-lines so when teams went to

Las Vegas, they were playing basically the same format.

The league has been consistent no matter what happened or who played. Several great players moved away, but others moved in or got better and took their place in the league. The notori-ety of the league has helped to keep it alive and strong.

When people see some of our guys play, they want to play the same, so they get in the B Masters, improve their games and move up to the A’s. This has happened many times. Two great Arizona dart players went from the B masters all the way to winning a Masters World Championship. Both Kix Alcala and Pete Linaris started in the B league and went on to do great things in Darts.

This season (our 60th) we have four players who have played over 20 years in the league. Several others are still playing darts and sub from time to time. These players are the backbone of the league and the main reason for it’s longevity and success.

It has also became a Monday night tra-dition, many players don’t know what to do on Mondays when league is off.

When you reach the highest plateau you can reach, it is always an honor. In this case, being recognized as the best soft tip league in the country makes it all worthwhile.

I take great pride and am honored to share this induction with all 300 or so players who have played in the league.

You are all Hall of Famers in my mind.

Like always, I may be wrong , but I doubt it….

Learning to Bet on Yourself

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

Let’s call this article “Learning to Bet on Yourself”.

There you are aiming at the game ball, a long cut shot on the eight ball into the far left corner pocket. You’ve taken your warmup strokes, you check the aim - looks perfect. Then as you begin your for-ward stroke through the cue ball, a little voice in your brain suddenly screams at you to make a last-second correction. The cue stick suddenly makes a left turn as it goes through the cue ball and you miss the eight ball by a mile. Unfortunately, this is a scenario that affects millions of amateur pool play-ers. There is a solution and it involves “Betting on Yourself”.

Every players hates to lose and every player hates to miss a shot, and when you listen to that little voice telling you to make a last-second correction as you are going through the cue ball you almost always miss the shot. The ironic thing is - you were probably aiming perfect before that little voice came into your head and made you change the direction that the cue stick was moving.

Now let’s see what it means to bet on yourself. One of the basic fundamen-tals of a shooting system it to take a few warmup strokes and then with the cue tip right at the cue ball, check the aim by moving the eyes back and forth from cue ball to object ball. If you think the aim is perfect, you must tell yourself that you are finished aiming

and you now only have one goal. You must make the cue stick goes straight through the cue ball four to six inches and freeze in that position whether you make the shot or not. In other words, you are betting that your aim is perfect and all you have to do is make the cue stick goes straight the cue ball to make the shot.

If the cue stick does not go perfectly straight through the cue ball, you failed to bet on yourself and will probably lose the bet. Here’s a little phrase that you can repeat to yourself that will make you miss less - “I will not shoot the shot until I think I am aiming per-fect, then I will make the cue stick go perfectly straight.”

Heres wishing you all the best of times at the pool table. - Jerry Briesath

A relatively small field of eight teams took advantage of the Stinger’s BCA Scotch Doubles Warm-Up event on May 5th to prepare for the upcoming BCA National Championships.

The final four teams on the winners side couldn’t have been more evenly matched with Brian & Veronica Poore defeat-ing Carlos Avalos & Ebony Kelly hill-hill, and Tyson Cole & Sophia Morquecho defeating Jerry Stuckart & Bernie Store hill-hill.

This left Brian & Veronia facing Tyson & Sophia for the hot-seat, with Tyson & Sophia racing to five while their opponents raced to four. The many hours of playing together by the Poore’s came through in this match with them taking the hot-seat with a 4-2 win.

On the one loss side, Ebony Kelly & Carlos Avalos were bat-tling it out with Jerry Stuckart & Bernie Store. After their hill-hill losses on the winners side, it was only fitting to see this match also go to hill-hill before Carlos & Ebony took the wins.

Carlos & Ebony faced off against Tyson & Sophia for a place in the finals, and it was Carlos & Ebony who came out with a 1-0 lead. That would be their only game though, as Tyson & Sophia won four games straight for the win.

The final match saw Tyson & Sophia take an early 1-0 lead, only to lost four of the next five games and lose to Brian & Veronia Poore by the same 4-2 score as their earlier match.

Brian and Veronica collected $580 for first, while Tyson & Sophia settled for $310 in prize money.

Tyson Wins at The DeliThe Deli’s Saturday Night 8-Ball Tourna-ment is still going strong, even as the Deli has their room expansion under way.

The fi eld was twenty nine players strong on May 12th and was dominated by Tyson Cole.

Cole defeated Al Post for the hot-seat and Al then lost to Patrick Zientak on the one loss side. Post took home $20 for third place.

The fi nals saw Zientak and Cole square off, and it was Cole with the win and the tourna-ment victory.

Tyson won $225 for fi rst place in the tournament as well as the side pot money, while Zientak settled for $85 in second place prize money.

The Deli expects their expansion construction to be fi nished in June and is look-ing forward to making their Saturday night tournament bigger and better in the very near future.
