JUNE 2011 ST. PETER’S MONTHLY E-NEWSLETTER Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, St. Peter’s church council voted 16-0 to propose to the congregation that we leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and join with the North American Lutheran Church. We made this decision after careful and prayerful deliberation because the Bible and its traditional interpretation are very important of us at St. Peter. Unfortunately, bound conscience has become more important than scripture in guiding decisions at this time in the ELCA. The belief in universal salvation (all are saved whether they believe or don’t believe in Jesus) and gay pastors, are two examples of this change in the ELCA. The church council voted this way not just for themselves but for their children and grandchildren. It is time that we take a stand for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

On Tuesday, May 17, 2011, St. Peter’s church council voted 16 -0 to p ropose to the congregation that we leave the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and join with the North American Lutheran Church. We made this decision

after careful and prayerful deliberation because the Bible and its traditional interpretation are very important of us at St. Peter. Unfortunately, bound conscience has become more important than scripture in guiding decisions at this time in the ELCA. The belief in universal salvation (all are saved whether they believe or don’t believe in Jesus) and gay pastors, are two examples of

this change in the ELCA.

The church council voted this way not just for themselves but f o r t h e i r c h i l d r e n a n d grandchildren. It is time that we take a stand for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please join other members of St. Peter as we prayerfully discuss the issues. The congregational vote will be June 19, 2011, at 10:15 a.m.

In this newsletter are two resolutions that the St. Peter Church Council has unanimously approved. We will be voting on these resolutions on June 19, 2011 at a called congregational meeting.

The Affiliation Committee and St. Peter Church Council has held many prayerful discussions, reviewed history, performed internet research, studied what other Lutheran Churches are doing, and now unanimously recommends that we terminate our affiliation with the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) and join the NALC (North American Lutheran Church).

The commi t tee has prepared a PowerPoint presentation for you to review some of the findings and reasons for these conclusions. (See schedule below.) We urge you to view the church website and attend one of the upcoming presentations, keeping an open mind and giving prayerful consideration to where God wants St. Peter Lutheran Church to be in the next 217 years. Remember to pray about it, ask for God's help, and talk about it. It is the future of our congregation as part of God's church and a witness to our faith and our salvation.

Church Affiliation News June 2011

Schedule for presentations on Church Affiliation findings:

June 5 – Sanctuary during Sunday School for all adults

June 9 – at the Primetimers meeting

June 12 – 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

June 14 – at the Lutheran Men meeting

Three BooksChristian education is always about proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for the salvation of the world and teaching / learning what loving God and our neighbor looks like when we believe that Jesus is the Christ. The Holy Spirit uses the Word in the Bible to teach us. I am also certain that the Holy Spirit uses some Christians, and non-Christians, to also teach us what love is, looks like, what building someone up looks like, as Paul writes.

A simple example of needing to learn what love looks like because we don’t always know especially in a new situation might be … some of us might have the natural inclination to give as much water or food to someone as they want after they have been without either for a long time. However, medical folks have learned doing that could be hazardous to someone’s health and life in some situations of extreme thirst and hunger. My little health challenge has led me into areas of reading that have taught me some new characteristics of what love looks like in this new

situation in my life, in others’ lives who are close to me, and for those who work with me. I have read three books which focus on the topic of living with a chronic illness. I think each of these books can be used by the Holy Spirit to teach the person with the chronic illness, and that person’s family members, friends, and work colleagues, what love might look like in those relationships. There are more than a few people in our congregation and community with a chronic illness. I got these three books from the Richland County Public Library, I found them very helpful. I hope you and others will too.
