Foundation Welcomes New COO

Gerry Kennedy Completes 12 Years as Foundation COO

Gerry Kennedy was named Founda-tion COO in 1997, and brought to the job a solid background in edu-cational program creation, chapter development, and fundraising skills.

Under Kennedy’s direction, the Foundation expanded the number of contractor volunteers serving on Foundation committees. Through their committee work, these volunteers learned more about the Foundation and many have since become major donors to the organization.

On the fundraising front, one new manufacturer and eighteen new ma-jor contractor donors were recognized during Kennedy’s tenure. Together, the pledges from these donors will ultimately add over $1.5 million to the Foundation’s endowment fund.

2 Educational Foundation Focus

Nancy Jones is immediate past president of the PHCC Association Executives Coun-cil. She has served as Executive Director of PHCC Texas since 2000. During her tenure, PHCC of Texas has built a very effective continuing education program and has or-ganized an apprentice program that allows students to attend class for four 10-hour days once each quarter so they can work in the field the rest of the year.

Ann Rivers is immediate past president of the PHCC National Auxiliary. Ann & Steve Rivers have been running Rivers Plumb-ing, Heating and Air together since 1983. Ann has been active in her local and state auxiliary chapters, and has held numerous positions in the PHCC National Auxiliary.

Paul Swan is the third generation owner of Swan Plb., Htg. and Electrical Co., which was started by his grandfather in 1921. Paul joined the PHCC in 1987 and has served as president of the Akron chapter and of PHCC of Ohio. Paul is Co-Facilitator for the PHCC of Ohio “Managing for Profit in Changing Markets” seminar program for new business owners that has been con-ducted every other year since 2001.

Kennedy’s Lasting Mark on the Foundation …Continued from front pageFoundation

Leadership SpotlightKennedy also oversaw the restructuring of the Invest in Your Future Annual Giving Cam-paign, which now generates nearly twice the net proceeds to benefit education as it did twelve years ago.

He also successfully worked to implement new donor recognition levels. These new levels gave the Foundation a way to recognize and thank the donors who are taking smaller steps on their way to becoming major donors.

A string of successful educational programs were created or updated under Kennedy’s direction, including the Understanding Overhead software, online Contractor Resource Center, the Es-sentials of Project Management course, the Kohler Seminar Series and the scholarship program. A major accomplishment has been completely revising and re-publishing a four-year series of plumb-ing and HVACR textbooks, along with their accompanying instruc-tor materials and online study offerings.

In early March, Kennedy was named Executive Vice President of the PHCC—National Association. There he will lead the process of creating new, compelling member benefits and work to position the association as the industry leader in energy and water conserva-tion.

HVACR 301 Textbook Now Available

The Foundation’s new HVACR 301 text-book is now available for purchase through Delmar Cengage Learning. This textbook is the third installment in a four-year series of textbooks aimed at apprentices and post-secondary HVACR students.

Along with the others in the series, “this book is a ‘must have’ to learn how to systematically troubleshoot and provide service in the HVAC industry,” said Jamie Simpson of Schaal Htg. & Cooling in Des Moines, Iowa.

What makes this textbook series unique is its focus on real life situations and teaching about current industry issues. “The student is introduced to hot topics within the HVAC industry—including energy efficient systems, indoor air quality and testing and balancing to name a few,” says Simp-son.

To order online, visit www.phccweb.org and under “Contractor Resourc-es” click on “Shop PHCC Products Online.” PHCC members can take advantage of a ten percent discount on the textbooks.

Online HVACR Home Study Program Launched

The Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new home study program for HVACR apprentices. This program mirrors the existing plumbing home study program and is designed for apprentices who cannot attend traditional apprentice-ship classes.

The program uses the Foundation’s HVACR textbook series as its basis for instruction. Students are able to log in to the Foundation’s learning management system (LMS) web site where they can view course information and assignments, participate in online discussion boards, and take assessments based on the course assignments. For more informa-tion on this program, contact Merry Beth Hall at [email protected].
