TRANSCRIPT
Healthy ravines are beautiful landscapes that protect Lake Michigan’s water and beaches, reduce property erosion, and provide habitat for endangered and rare plants, spawning sh and migrating birds. But without thoughtful action, our ravines could become dangerous, muddy ditches that erode property and increase pollution in Lake Michigan.
June 2, 2016
A project by the Alliance for the Great Lakes, Chicago Botanic Garden, The Field Museum, and Openlands.
Case StudyProgram
When it comes to our ravines and our Lake Michigan coast, we are all in this together.
Revitalizing Our Ravines: Community Workshop a two-day event where elected ocials, city planners, environmentalists and property owners come together to solve some of the most pressing concerns facing the future of our beautiful and rare ravine landscapes.
Our backyards are peaceful havens where our families go to relax, but that doesn’t mean our backyards can’t be working while we are relaxing!
The Landowner Guide from Openlands is designed to make sure your landscape choices work for you and our ravines.
Inside is helpful information for all ravine-adjacent landowners, including:Descriptions of healthy and unhealthy practices for both tableland and ravine areasDo’s and Don’ts for plants, drainage, surfaces, yard waste and lawn careSample landscape design sketchesLists of ravine-friendly native plantsService providers who can help with ravine-friendly landscaping

1) Did the property assessment accurately identify the source(s) of ooding?2) Did the installed ood mitigation measures reduce thenumber of basement ooding incidents and/or
inches of water in the basement or yard, for a given storm type?3) What is the cost of the solutions implemented compared to potential costs of ooding again?4) Are the homeowners satised with the service?
RainReady also considers the broader ecosystem and community benets associated with nature-based solutions. These include water quality benets achieved (in terms of total suspended solids and phosphorus removed), groundwater recharged and erosion prevented (in terms of gallons of stormwater inltrated), and improved property values.
When it comes to our ravines and our Lake Michigan coast, we are all in this together.
