In today’s Gospel, Jesus compares the beginning of God’s kingdom to a mustard seed. This tiny seed, which fits in the palm of a hand, can grow to fifteen feet with sprawling branches! Like the mustard seed, the Christian community had a tiny, seemingly insignificant beginning. The church, which began with about 120 followers, added three thousand people on Pentecost Day following the descent of the Holy Spirit. The Heart of Mary Cluster, inspired by the Holy Spirit, provides a welcoming faith community in which we proclaim the

Gospel of Jesus Christ by the way we live, by our worship together and

by serving others.

An experience that always takes my breath away, and sometimes even brings tears to my eyes, is to hold a newborn child. I’m amazed at how one so tiny embodies all that is needed to grow and thrive. How tiny all one’s organs must be at that stage – heart and lungs, kidneys, diges-tive system, the network of arteries and veins! I often think to myself, “How can anyone see such a miracle and question the existence of God?!” Yes, I know all about science – anatomy, biology, etc. Still, I believe there is more going on inside and around us than we can explain, than we can ever fully grasp.

In todays’ gospel, Jesus speaks of seed scattered that sprouts and grows, though the sower knows not how. Here in rural Iowa, we know that condi-tions need to be right in order for seed to sprout and grow. We take pride in what we do to help the process along. Ultimately, though, we depend on God. As people of faith, we know that everything we have, all that we are, comes from God. God entrusts it to us to tend and nurture, but we do so in coopera-tion with Him. When we do cooperate with Him in all things, using what He gives us wisely, great things can happen! Let us always remember to give Him the glory for as the psalmist writes “Lord, it is good to give thanks to you!” -Marcia Reilly, Parish Life Coordinator

First Fruits “Thank You” of the Week As notes are received and space allows, we will share with you the expression of thanks received from the organiza-tions we have supported through our cluster’s First Fruits

initiative. Here’s a note received from the Catholic Worker House: Dear Friends, Thank you for your donation of $500.00 to the St. John of the Cross Catholic Worker House. Your donation will help us continue our mission of helping the homeless with emergency shelter in our community. This year the Catholic Worker House is more in demand than ever to provide shelter to those in need. We hope you know how much we appreciate your confidence in our mission of feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless.

Sincerely, Linda Barrett

Farewell for Fr. Barta Sunday, July 8th St. Mary, Urbana

Fr. Barta will be attending the annual priest convocation on Monday and Tuesday. Thus, we will NOT have Mass at St. Mary,

Vinton on Tues, June 19th. Adoration will still take place.

Our Gifts

Stewardship of Talent

Today we give thanks for all fathers and grandfathers who, by their words and example, have helped to pass the faith

on to the younger generations.

The example of both parents in things that matter, like our faith,

is critical.

Stewardship Thought

Like the sower in today’s Gospel, I scatter as seed my gifts of time,

talent, and resources; and I trust that, by God’s grace

and in God’s time, these small gifts of myself

may grow and flourish and help to bring about

the kingdom of God.

Pastoral Council Seeks Your Input - The organ at St. Mary Urbana is in need of repair. We’ve been researching the problem for some time. It can be fixed, but at a cost of $1500. The only people who have recently played the organ for an occasional wedding or funeral, are Ruth Dolan (SH) and Deb Schemmel (SMV). The council wishes to know if there are any parishioners from Urbana who can and are willing to play the organ and/or if anyone would wish to purchase it. Please talk to a council member (Al Buck, Ellen Herman, Jason Jaquette, Annie Brustkern, Todd Peterson, Vicki Ramsey) or call the office if interested. Thank you.

Prayer Shawl Ministry A prayer shawl ministry has begun at St. Mary, Urbana parish and we’d love to see it spread across the cluster! At the 8:30 Mass last weekend, Fr. Barta blessed shawls and hats that have recently been completed. .

Prayer shawls are tangible signs of prayer. Individuals blessed with the talent to knit or crochet create prayer shawls and hats to be given to someone suffering from a serious illness or experiencing a particularly difficult time. The person who makes the shawl prays for the

person who will receive it and their need(s), asking for physical, mental and spiritual healing as well as peace and comfort for the recipient.

Those who would like to participate are welcome to do so in a group or individually in their own home. If you like to knit or crochet and would like more information, please contact Ellen Herman at 319-560-6906.

Everyone is invited downstairs after Mass for coffee & donuts hosted by Steve & Angie Smith!
