The Elite News and the Univer-sity of Texas at Arlington recentlyentered into an unprecedented rela-tionship that transferred ownershipof the personal papers and otherartifacts owned by the publication’sfounder, William “Bill” Blair, to theArlington- based academic institu-tion.

The University responded byagreeing to make Mr. Blair’s do-nated items available to scholars, students and members of the publicfor research and observation fordecades to come. Mr. Blair for-mally signed the donation papers ata ceremony attended by Universityofficials and members of the publicat an hour-long ceremony held onJanuary 5 in the school’s librarywhere his papers will be housed.

The collection includes the per-sonal papers of Mr. Blair, the his-torical records of the newspaper hestarted, the records of the EliteNews Martin Luther King Jr. DayParade, and items from the EliteNews Religious Hall of Fame, which the newspaper started underMr. Blair’s leadership.

“We are delighted that Mr. Blairchose our university to house hiscollection,” said Dr. Marvin Du-

laney, the chairman of the school’shistory department. “Today wehave created a relationship that is inthe best interests of all of the peopleof north Texas. This is a monumen-tal achievement. It will be invalu-able to scholars.”

Mr. Blair was surrounded by hisfamily members at the ceremony.

“Our father wanted the next gen-eration to know the history of thetimes that we live in,” said DebraBlair Abron, the publisher of thenewspaper and one of Mr. Blair’sdaughters. “We are thrilled that theUniversity of Texas at Arlingtonhas found value in the work that ourfather has done for the past halfcentury. Today is one of the greatest

moments in the history of the Blairfamily.”

Months ago representatives ofthe Blair family sent inquiries toTexas colleges and universities ask-ing them if they were interested inMr. Blair’s personal papers if a de-cision was made to donate them.Several responded within weeksafter receiving the letter. Each ofthem expressed an interest.

“This is a special day for ourfamily,” said Darryl Blair, thepaper’s senior editor and one of Mr.Blair’s sons. “We are very proud ofour father and we are excited to bepartnering with an institution suchas the University of Texas at Ar-lington. They have been very kind

and we are looking forward to thevarious programs that are going tobe created.”

In addition to preserving Mr.Blair’s work product, the universityalso intends to establish a WilliamBlair scholarship fund, name a lec-ture series after the former NegroLeague baseball pitcher and iden-tify communications students towork as interns at the Elite News.

“I want people for generations tocome to know the history of thoseof us who are alive today,” said Mr.Blair. “I believe that the steps thatwe have taken today will accom-plish that objective. This is a greatday in my life and in the life of my

family. I am somewhat speechless.” The story of the Blair donation

was placed on the internationalmedia agenda by NBC news whichfeatured it shortly after it was an-nounced.

“What Mr. Blair has done issomething that others should emu-late,” said Dr. Jesse Ingram, a for-mer professor at Bowie StateCollege in Bowie, Maryland. “Toooften people do great things andonce they are gone there greatnessleaves with them. Mr. Blair and hisfamily has done something that willallow his accomplishment to sur-vive him and them as well.”

Recently the city of New York de-cided to place limits on the amountof sugar that can go into drinks sold

by outlets such as McDonalds and BurgerKing.

The policy limits the size of drinks that canbe sold by such concerns. Health officials inNew York City issued the policy after deepconcern about the linkages between sugar in-take and such conditions as obesity and dia-betes.

Perhaps the city of Dallas should take alook at what officials in New York City havedone. We have children in this city sufferingfrom obesity as early as age 10. No doubt, they will become the diabetics of the future. And all of us know what that dreadful diseasecan lead to.

Scientists have known for years that thereis a direct link between what our bodies con-sume and what we become. Those who eatdiets that consist largely of sugar and fat aremore likely to become sick than those who eatdiets that include vegetable and other nutrientbased foods.

We should cut back on the amount of sugar

and other friend foods that we feed our chil-dren in school. Many of these same childrencome from homes where most of the foodsthat they eat are prepared by fast food estab-lishments. Our children are not receiving nu-trients. They are receiving “junk foods.” Canyou imagine what the body thinks knowingthat we are placing “junk” in it?

For years, scientists have told us that thereis a direct relationship between what childreneat and their ability to learn. Studies haveshown that children who are breastfed havebetter cognition and do better in school thanchildren who are fed formula.

Yes, sugar diets are killing our children andcausing diabetes in many adults and we haveto do something to change that. To do nothingwill result in a population that gets sicker andsicker. It is something that we cannot afford. Our healthcare costs continue to run rampantbecause we do not make the right decisionswhen our children are young.

New York is on the right track. Decisionmakers in Dallas need to take notice. If we donothing, our children will continue to sufferand all of us will continue to pay the price!

WORD FROM tHE PUBLiSHERDebra Blair Abron

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

The recent shootings of a police of-ficer in Arlington and the persistentshootings that take place in Dallas

should demonstrate to all of us that our na-tional gun policy is not working and thatguns in this country are in the hands of thewrong people.

The sad reality in our country is that anyfool can get a gun. I have heard of cases ofyoung men getting out of prison on Thurs-day and being fully armed by Friday. OnSaturday they rob another bank.

Recently, two promising Auburn Univer-sity football players were shot and killed ata pool party.

The young man who shot them has a his-tory of gun violence. Yet, he, too, was ableto have a gun and carry it around just assome of us carry our cell phones with uswherever we go.

The National Rifle Association arguesthat people have a constitutional right to“bear arms.”

I am not a Constitutional scholar but I begto differ with that organization. I believe todiffer with them.

I believe that those who wrote the Consti-tution were speaking of the military whoserole it was to protect the people and notevery citizen.

The National Rifle Association knowsthat too, but the issue for them is not gunsafety.

The issue for them is money. Each time agun is sold in this country they earn a poten-tial member.

They couldn’t care less who gets killed inSouth Dallas, or whether or not a police of-ficer in Arlington is shot while performinghis duty to protect the public.

The gun policy that we have now---- anyfool can get one-----has made all of us pris-oners in our own homes.

We are frightened to walk down ourstreets. We are scared to death that the driverin the car next to us might pull out a handgun if we say something about the erraticmanner they were driving.

We are afraid of sending our children toschool because we do not know if they willcome back to us in a body bag.

Here’s another thing: The National RifleAssociation spends more money buyingpoliticians and their votes than any otherlobby in the country.

And believe you me that is one of the rea-sons that we do not have sensible gun poli-cies. Ray Charles, bless his soul, could haveseen that.

As long as we allow guns to run rampantin this country, we will have senseless shoot-ings, the morticians will stay busy and thegun sellers will continue to rejoice.

It is about time that we put an end to themadness. If we don’t, the next gun that yousee might be one that some robber is point-ing in your face.

The television series Dallas has been revivedand some of Dallas’ most prominent citizenswere treated to a special screening of the leg-endary drama at the Winspear Opera House lo-cated in the AT&T Performing Arts Center indowntown Dallas on May 31.

One of those in attendance was State TexasRepresentative Helen Giddings who helped topass legislation in the Texas legislature thatmade financing available to the producers of theshow, allowing them to film most of the showin Texas and hire Texas-based talent.

“Through the Texas Film Commission thestate of Texas has made funding available to theproducers of the show,” said Rep. Giddings.“Years ago Dallas was one of television’s mostpopular television series. It brought tremendousattention to our city. I am thrilled that it is beingrevived. It made Dallas a household wordaround the world.”

While Rep. Giddings applauds the new ver-sion of Dallas and what it will mean for the city, she continues to urge decision makers to makethe show, and others like it, more racially and

culturally diverse. “Dallas and Texas have a his-tory in which people of color and others whoare different have played significant roles.”

She continued, “It is important to have filmproducts that include the participation of peopleof color and others who have contributed tomake Texas a desirable place to live. I will con-tinue to pursue that objective as part of my dutyas an elected official.”

The reincarnation of the series features suchstars as Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and PatrickDuffy. They make up the powerful Ewing fam-ily, with Hagman playing the sometimes villain-ous character, J.R.

A new generation of Ewings is featured inthe series, the show’s producers said.

Evan Fitzmaurice, the director of the TexasFilm Commission, said that the series receivedfunding appropriated by the state legislature.“The state of Texas provided the producers with$2.1 million for 10 episodes of the series forseason one. Those funds helped to pay thewages of Texans that appeared in the show,” hesaid.

In addition to the Dallas showing, the seriesis scheduled to premiere June 13 in Washing-ton, D.C. at Lounge 201, located within walk-ing distance of historic Union Station. Selectedguests from Texas and Washington have beeninvited to the showing.

1”God is our refuge andstrength, an ever-present help introuble.

2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way2andthe mountains fall into the heartof the sea, 3though its watersroar and foam and the mountainsquake with their surging.”4There is a river whose streamsmake glad the city of God, theholy place where the Most Highdwells.”

5God is within her, she willnot fall; God will help her atbreak of day.

6Nations are in uproar, king-doms fall; he lifts his voice, theearth melts.

7The Lord Almighty is withus; 7the God of Jacob is ourfortress.”

8”Come and see the works ofthe Lord, 8the desolations he hasbrought on the earth.

9He makes wars cease to theends of the earth; he breaks thebow and shatters the spear, heburns the shields with fire.10"Be still, and know that I amGod; I will be exalted among thenations, I will be exalted in theearth."

11The Lord Almighty is withus; the God of Jacob is ourfortress.”

America was struck with theworst tragedy in history a fewyears back.

Without any warning or rea-soning, thousands of lives were

taken. But the question that we as be-

lievers need to address today is:“What Do You Do When Trou-ble Comes?”

In other words, how do yourespond? How do you react? What exactly is the correctmeasure?

What are the appropriate stepsthat must be taken if you are tomake it through? When troublecomes?

When trouble comes; youneed to know how to deal withit, because in actuality, you don’thave a choice!

Or but I believe that what theLord was really trying to teachus is that we as Christians shouldall have Confidence In TheMidst of A Crisis! Webster’sDictionary defines the word cri-sis as; “a stage in a sequence ofevents at which the trend of allfuture events is determined.” Inother words, a turning point!

Our text here presents us withthree fundamental issues that weneed to consider if we are to sur-vive during this time of trouble

and uncertainty. It lends to us,the advantage of how to over-come the adversary.

It sheds light on what we needto do when trouble comes! If youwant to make it through toughtimes.

If you want to make it whentrouble comes you must first re-member that.

What a profound statementthis is in verse one God is ourrefuge God is In other words,God is a safe place, a safetyzone, a shelter from danger. Theold folks used to say; “He is ashelter in the time of storm.”

I don’t know about you, but Ihave had some storms in my life.I have had some troubled timesin this life.

I have had some times whereit seemed like I was not going tomake it.

Sometimes when I did notknow whether I was coming orgoing. Sometimes when I did notknow which way was up!

But I am glad that I had arefuge I am glad that I had aplace of shelter.

For not only does the text in-form us that He is our refuge, butPsalms 91 tells me that “He whodwells in the secret place of theMost High, shall abide under theshadow of the Almighty.

For He is my refuge and myfortress. In Him will I trust?”What I am trying to say is that “Ihave got a secret place! I havegot a shelter! And when thingsget bad, I can run to the secret

place!” “Who Can I Run To?” Ican run to God because He is!

Because that is where He cankeep me. That is where He canrock in the cradle of His lovingarms and keep me from hurt, harm and danger!

Everybody ought to have a se-cret place! When trouble comesyour way, just remember that Heis still God; our protector and runto the secret place! Run to theshelter!

When you remember that Heis our Protector, you will realizethat the Lord covers us in timesof despair He is our haven andour sanctuary.

The place in which we canfind a sweet relief! I believe thatis what Martin Luther was tryingto tell us.

When he penned the words tothe wonderful hymn, “A MightyFortress Is Our God!”

Not only is the Lord is ourrefuge, but likewise we see thatHe is our strength.

He is our refuge and ourstrength. The word and is a con-junction word that connects twoor more phrases together.

So to get the proper connota-tion of what the writer is tryingto say, you have got to connect ittogether!

God is our refuge and ourstrength!

Dear Dr. Hollie,

Several years ago, my older brother decidedthat he didn’t like black women anymore, andthat he would only date white women. As ablack woman I took offense to this. Hegrouped us all into this one category of beingangry, bitter and mean all because of the fewhe had been with. The few white women hehas brought around, I did not like. They justhad really nasty attitudes. They didn’t comearound too much, so there was really a prob-lem. He’s about to get married and so far, Ihaven’t met this woman. But is there some-thing I can say to my brother to make sure thathe’s not feeding her head with negative thingsabout black women? That is really what Ithink gives them the nasty attitude. I wouldlike to be able to get along with her since shewill be part of my family.

Not Usually Angry

Dear Not Usually Angry,

i can understand your concern for yourbrother and his choices. However, i don’tsee that part having much to do with you.As you welcome your new sister-in-law intothe family, i advise you to see her simply asa women, and not an ethnic choice. if anasty attitude should come up, then you canaddress that specifically with her. My ad-vice would be to try to have a positive viewand opinion of her and your brother’s rela-tionship.

Prayer is not only a powerful weapon, but it is also a powerful connection be-tween God and man. It keeps us in linewith our Godly destiny. Moses, likemany men, believed in prayer in thedays of his youth, but it remained for agreat spiritual experience later in life,to give him power in prayer. This eventin Moses’ life was meeting God in theburning bush. As a sinful man he real-

ized his unfitness and took off his shoes, a sign of re-spect in that day and time. The conversation that tookplace next between God and Moses resulted in Moses re-turn to Egypt, and the beginning of a chain of eventswhich delivered the children of Israel out of Egyptianbondage and brought them into Canaan which was to betheir home for centuries. out of his conversations withGod came the successful strategies which Moses used todeal with the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Welcome to the weekend, baby! Happy Fa-ther's Day to all the dads who read this col-umn! Studies show that kids who have fathersinvolved in their lives as positive role modelsturn out better. So get involved if ya haven'tbeen. These kids are the people who will takecare of you when you are old and crazy. Mythought is a Father must be stern, but fair. Hemust be able to draw the line clearly betweenright and wrong, while staying on the side ofright. That brings me to the latest ministerdrama out of Atlanta Ga. Seems ReverendCreflo Dollar's 15-year-old daughter calledthe law on the Rev. at 1am last weekend. Therewas a disagreement over whether this girlcould attend a party. The daughter claimed herdad choked her and that assertion was back upby the Dollar's 19 year old daughter who wit-nessed the drama. Mom Taffy was likeSargeant Shultz on Hogan's Heroes, seeing

nothing and hearing nada. Rev. Dol-lar denies this happened and as ofpress time his wife was backing himup. I wrote this as an example ofwhat Dad can't do. I stopped spank-ing my girls when they were about10. Why? I stopped because asyoung women, they did not need tofeel that it was right for a man to puthis hands on them. That said, anyphysical discipline needed was han-dled by Mom. My brothers we can't put ourhands on our daughters. The relationship withsons is different. While talking is always the1st course of action, the lion is the lion andthere can be only one alpha male in a house-hold. Everybody can't be Bill Cosby, but everyman can put forth effort to guide his children!Happy Father's Day, my brothas! The Rev.Marvin Winans is making headway in his case

against three carjackers whorobbed him of his vehicle at a gasstation outside of Detroit on May16. When he left out of the store, four people came out. Shortlyafter beginning to fill his tank, hewas pummeled and someone elsetook off with his 2012 InfinitiQX56. Someone also removed his$20,000 watch and took hismoney. The jackers were identfied

and arrested this week. I wonder if their dadswere a part of their lives and if so, in what way.Dad's make a difference! Then sometimes youcan have a strong dad, but get momentarilystuck on stupid! Now that championship boxerFloyd Mayweather is locked up, his career islooking a bit battered and bruised. It’s onlybeen 12 days since his life behind bars began, but he’s already worried he won’t be able to

bounce back from this part of his life to savehis career. Mayweather states in new legaldocuments that he thinks his 3-month sentencecould have a detrimental effect on his life as aboxer. He’s asking the judge to allow him toserve his time on house arrest instead. It's onething to talk about doing some time, it's an-other thing to do it. I am 100% a dallas mav-ericks fan, but it's hard not to pull for KevinDurant and the Young Guns from OklahomaCity in their NBA Finals matchup with theMiami Heat! Yeah, I'm a Christian, but I havenot forgiven former Dallas Mayor LauraMiller, Dwyane Wade nor the referees for thetheft in 2006 of what should have been theMav's 1st NBA Championship! We have heard a lot aboutthe "Big 3." Most of thetime when you hear this

term the sports commentator is refer-ring to the players on the Miami Heatbasketball team. The " Big 3" are play-ers Dewayne Wade, Lebron James, andChris Bosh.

But on Saturday night, game 7 of theEastern Conference finals, the Big 3were jump shots made in the clutch.

Chris Bosh made a clutch 3 pointerthat sparked a late run, scoring from the3 point line with 29 seconds left in thethird quarter to tie the game at 73.

The 3-point shot is a very uniquetool used in the game of basketball. The3 point shot allows you the opprotunityto elimanate a lead.

The Heat made 9-26 from the 3pointline and Boston made 6-19,

Both teams shot the ball well, Miamijust made more shots.

But basketball is a make or missgame. The 3-point shot can help yourteam win and it can cause your team tolose.

The 3- point rule was first tested atthe collegiate level in a 1945 National

Collegiate AthleticAssociation gamebetween Columbiaand Fordham.

Pro ball was thefirst to adopt therule on a permanentbasis. The Ameri-can Basketball

League did so in 1961. The Eastern Professional Basketball

League followed in the 1963-64 sea-son. The 3-point shot later became pop-ular in the American BasketballAssocition after its introduction in the1967-68 season.

During the 1970s, the ABA used the3- point shot along with the slam dunk,as a marketing tool to compete with theNational Basketball Association. In1979 the NBA adopted the 3-point shot.

The Eastern Conference finals fea-tured the best 3-point shooters in NBAhistory.

Boston featured Ray Allen who issure to be a Hall. - of - Famer and PaulPierce (Hall-of-Famer) is one of theleagues top scores in NBA history.

The Miami Heat featured DewayneWade who is very athletic, but when hegets hot can shoot the 3-ball really well.Labron James showed the world he canplay all 5 position on the basketballcourt.

James had 31 points and 12 reboundsand kept his team in the game thewhole time, evening when they were

behind. Dewayne Wade had a 3-pointplay with 2:53 that put the heat up by12.

But it was the "Big 3" by Chris Boshthe broke the backs of the Celtics.

Bosh was 3-4 from 3- point land andfinished the night with 19 points.

Bosh was not the only Heat playerwho put in some threes. Battier was 4-9, Challers was 1-3, and James was 1-5.

The 3-point shots was good to theMaimi Heat in game 7, but the Cham-pionship will be played against theOklahoma Thunder and Kevin Duranteand Russell Westbrooks, so the Heatneed that 3-point shooting to continue.

The Thunder are younger and verytalented. And Kevin D can shoot the 3-ball from anywhere in the stadium

The NBA Championship will be agreat show of skill and great talent, soget ready to hear the term the "Big 3,"only this time the commentator won'tbe talking about a player he will betalking about a play!!

May God Bless us and help ussave the world
