Essentially, Pervious Concrete is structural concrete pavement that "drinks" water. It has a porous structure that allows

rainwater to pass directly through the pavement, into a storage layer of stone under the pavement, then into the soil,

naturally. Pervious Concrete filters and cleans storm water, while significantly increasing land utilization by reducing or

eliminating the need for storm water drainage systems and retention areas.

Pervious Concrete consists of cement, coarse aggregates, water, and special components which produce sufficient

paste and bonding properties to glue coarse aggregates together, creating an in-place void structure of 15-35 percent.

According to the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA), Pervious Concrete pavement and its sub base mayprovide enough water storage capacity to eliminate the need for retention ponds, swales and other precipitation runoff

containment strategies. Pervious Concrete captures rainwater and allows it to seep into the ground at a slower rate, so

it helps to:

Recharge groundwater,

Reduce storm water runoff, and

Meet U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) storm water regulations.

In fact, the use of Pervious Concrete is among the Best Management Practices (BMP) recommended by the U.S. EPA

and other agencies and geotechnical engineers across the country for the management of storm water runoff on a

regional and local basis.

An environmentally safe soybean water-repellent, THE BEAN, will be applied to the pervious concrete to help protectthe surface, especially during the curing period. THE BEAN is produced in Indiana from soybeans, and is safe for

plants and animals.

About the Girl Scouts Pervious Parking ProjectThe 19 space parking area will be placed in May/June 2006. It will be installed to replace a failed grasspave porous

parking area. The first placement of the new parking area is being done in mid-May, 2006, while the balance will be

placed on June 13. It is an excellent watershed demonstration site, showing how proper management practices can

protect our soil and water resources.

The 19 space parking area was designed and built by the Girl Scouts Program and Learning Centerand includes

participation by the following organizations:
