You now NEED car insurance even when not driving. You'll be fined if cover lapses.
You've always needed cover to drive, but the newContinuous Insurance Enforcement regime means from20 June, if you’ve an uninsured car, van, motorbike ormotor home, you're breaking the law whether you driveit or not.
You can be fined or have your vehicle destroyed. Even ifyou let cover lapse during holidays or hospital staysyou'll be breaking the law. There's a £100 fine followedby clamping, seizure or it being destroyed, thoughwarning letters come first.
Avoid it with a Sorn. Those with a valid Statutory Off-Road Notice (Sorn, apply at Direct.gov) who keep theirmotor off-road (garage or driveway - not roadside orgrass verges) don't need cover.
Make a note in your diary for say six weeks beforerenewal, so that you have time to find suitable insurance.
The change is rightly to cut uninsured driving byallowing the Government to match databases of cars andinsurance.

One of the most important aspects of building the JubileeCentre was to provide space for a clubroom for youngpeople in the village. We want to encourage youngstersto be spending their leisure time in a way that intereststhem and doesn't cause problems for others.
If you are over 18 and have an hour or two to spare eachweek, you could be instrumental in getting this club offthe ground.
For an informal chat about what this might entail, pleasecontact me.

1Blood DonationIf it was proposed that only those who have donatedblood or those who are medically prevented from givingblood should receive blood transfusions, would this befair? If not why not?
Only 6% of those who could give blood do so. If you arein the 94%, why?
Even if the thought of giving blood makes you feel bad,be brave, do something amazing and come along to thenext Blood Donation Session in the village. It isn't thatbad and you get a free drink & biscuits.
The next Blood Donating Session is onin the Village Hall. The opening times should be
1.00pm - 3.30pm and 5.00 pm - 7.15pm.
Whilst you can just come along without an appointmentit will probably be a bit quicker if you can make one. Youcan do this by calling 0300 123 23 23 or go to
You may have a small wait if you pick a popular time butgood feelings are worth waiting for.
It will also probably be quicker if you can come along tothe earlier session.

Wilstead Garden ClubOur May meeting was a Natter Night and plant swap, andwas well attended. Most people were able to take homesome plants they hadn't grown before, and the remainder ofthe plants were donated to a special event being held byWilstead Brownies on 18th June, to jointly raise money forWater Aid and our local Good Neighbour Scheme. Make anote in your diary and keep an eye out at the MethodistChurch on and help raise money forgood causes.
Our next meeting on will be ourmembers' garden visits, and we will be meeting at 7 pm atthe first garden. If you would be interested in joining usplease give me a call and I will give you more details.

ABit of a Whiff in theAir
As I write the dry spell has gone on long enough to attractmedia stories of impending doom for farmers and growers. For once these stories have the ring of truth!
The list has become shorter this month. One applicant haspreferred to wait a little longer due to changingcircumstances and we have helped him with this byreturning him to the bottom of the list. Such a process canbe repeated and could apply to tenants who currently haveplots but find themselves unable to cultivate themsatisfactorily. (Please see below). The coded list is: SD; DQ; SN.
The growing season is now well advanced and we do have anumber of plots which have as yet shown few signs ofcultivation taking place. Genuine difficulties are alwaystaken into account but it should be remembered that wehave people waiting and eager to make a start. Neglectedplots also grow weeds which are likely to spread onto otherplots and cause a deal of annoyance.
We send our best wishes to our members, Spencer Murphyand Keith Newbury as each of them deal with difficultillnesses.
Thanks to the Parish Council we now have a few extraparking spaces adjacent to the notice board. These will bevery useful at busy times. We suggest maximum use can begained if cars are turned round near the burial ground gateand parked slantwise onto the new parking area.
Our recent survey of members produced several volunteersto help the F & P committee on Show day,
As we drove along a Cornish lane (locally known as a mainroad) the sudden appearance of a muck spreader as it turnedout of a farm yard caused some consternation. The stenchwas powerful, producing sounds of complete disgust fromMum and Grandma.
I pretended I didn't mind it at all.
My Little Helper made her contribution from the back seat:“I don't mind it either. It's what we need for the allotmentisn't it Grandad? It's good stuff.”

Elstow 1 XI enjoyed their first win of the season atMilton Keynes; a two wicket victory here provided thewelcome antidote to their first match reverse at MiltonKeynes City. Back in dramatic fashion after a two yearabsence is veteran seamer Tony Harper, the talismanicspearhead of the Elstow attack started back in impressivestyle taking 30-4 as the home side were bowled out for128 inside 30 overs. Skipper Matt Stevens finishedunbeaten on 31 as Elstow suffered a middle-ordercollapse in chasing down the required runs for victory. The promotion of the younger members from the 2 XIworked well with Rani Thiarra matching his captain forruns while cousin Hani and Rob Tebbutt weighed in withsome key wickets.
Elstow 2 XI started well enough against WolvertonTown with a six wicket home win. Phil 'Bear' Southwelltook 4-15 as, despite a flying start; the visitors werepegged back from 90-2 to 156 all out. Despite injuryconcerns coming into the match, the big man bowledwith customary vigour and was ably supported by NickLewis who mopped up the tail with 3-13. Another blastfrom the past Pete Burraway has rejoined the club wherehe started his lengthy career and his innings was ahighlight in the Elstow reply. Sadly this good work wasall undone a week later in a wretched reverse against
Olney Town. This match saw the debuts of KaneHamilton-Boyle and Luke Griffin as they combine 2XI, Development XI and Under 16 team duties in whatpromises to be a busy summer for these two talented all-rounders.
The Under 14s team started their season with animpressive win in a friendly at Blunham, DavidWhitfield held his nerve to deliver victory in the finalover. Meanwhile the Under 16s missed out against astrong Ickwell side, an evening at the picturesquesurroundings of one of Bedfordshire's signature groundslittle in the way of consolation for Phil Johnson'sprotégées. The Under 12s and 10s matches will be heldon Sunday mornings while the U14s play their matcheson Tuesday evenings, the U16s on Thursdays. Trainingfor junior teams takes place on Thursday evenings from17.30 at The Warren.

The May WI meeting was held in the MethodistChurch Hall owing to the Village Hall being used forthe elections.
We discussed the resolutions that go forward to theNFWI AGM in June. The main item was votingagainst the proposal for Mega Farms which areplanned for Lincolnshire.
We are looking forward to a second visit from EdithGarea in July. Last year she demonstrated and talkedabout Chinese cooking very amusingly. She left uswith some recipes and she had put together andincluded sachets of the herbs and spices she used. They can be obtained in supermarkets.
We will be back in the Village Hallat 7.30pm and look forward to seeing you.

“Community Emergency Plan”
Sgt SharonBuckingham, Beds Police said that speeding was aproblem in the whole of Beds. Currently differentgroups and councils were buying or operating variousspeed indicating devices (SIDs). It was intended togive Speed Watch a more formalised approach both tocontrol and operations thus ensuring effective use. Tocover all aspects of operating SID there would bestandardised training for volunteers, who woulddecide when to set up SID. Data collected wouldprovide information for Traffic Management to follow-up with appropriate action. Training should becompleted to enable the new approach to be up andrunning by July.
Chris Bilby, Head of Corporate Safetyand Resilience, Beds Borough Council and TomBennett, Snr Resilience Officer, Beds BoroughCouncil gave a detailed and informative presentationwhich resulted in a good understanding of emergencyplanning (EP) and how to make local communitiesmore resilient. They explained the need for EP,illustrating possible hazards in Beds; showed whatwas done as a local authority before, during and aftermajor incidents and how they worked with otherresponders. The emergency planning process wasoutlined. This covered the prevention of emergencieswhen possible but when they did occur, good planningshould reduce, control and mitigate the effects of theemergency. Levels of command and control werecovered as was the multi-agency response to majorincidents and how relevant agencies, including thehighly trained voluntary sector, were involved.

The campaignaims to help people protect themselves and theirproperties. This aim links strongly with NHW wherepeople come together to make communities safer. The CEP provides an opportunity to document andplan for dealing with an emergency preparing:
a local risk assessmentidentifying local resourcesplaces of safetyemergency contact lists anddetails of organisations that could help in the firststages of an emergency.
Such issues as alternative arrangements for staying incontact, if usual communications were disrupted, needto be considered.

Wilstead Bowls ClubThe Club has had a fine start to the Summer season in twoways, weather-wise which makes a nice change andseveral of our teams have got through a few rounds of thefirst County Competitions.
The Ladies won their first round of the CountyCompetition called ‘Top Club’. This is where the Clubhas to provide ten members to play in a Singles, Pairs,Triples and Rinks (4 players) matches. If the games aredrawn at the end of play, then the number of shotsdifference decides the overall winner. Their nextopponents are Luton Co-op and unfortunately Wilsteadhas been drawn ‘away’, so Luton Co-op has got the homeadvantage, but everyone will try their best and hope towin.
The Open Day went very well and it was great to seesome new faces. We hope they will become memberswhen they will be able to join in all the social events aswell as try a new sport. Everyone is made very welcome.

Reader's LetterLitter Loser
Every morning I go and get a newspaper from the PostOffice. Another Wilstead resident also visits the PostOffice, most every day, to purchase a lotteryscratchcard.
Here the similarities end. I read my paper, attempt thecrossword and then, when I've finished with it, put it inour recycling bin. The other resident, scratches hiscard, reads it, determines he's a loser and then tears thecard into 4 regular pieces and throws them away, allalong Cotton End Road day after day!
Spend your money on what you like I say! But whenyou habitually chuck your rubbish away in the village Ilive in, well, then I've a right (no responsibility) to drawattention to you.
Whoever you are, you unthinking litterbug, there's noneed to demonstrate to me or any other Wilsteadresident, how much of a loser you actually are. Take ithome!

I must thank the 'Wilstead Good Neighbours' mostsincerely for their prompt response to my 'phone call onMay 16th.
I had received an urgent call from the Health Centre topack an overnight bag and get to Bedford Hospital assoon as possible and report to the Acute Assessment Unit.My wife does not drive so the question was 'Do we waitfor a bus, (no idea of timetables), or call a taxi? Luckily, the Good Neighbour Scheme came to mind and withinfive minutes a Good Neighbour was at our door. She gotus to the Hospital immediately and instructed my wife toring again for a lift home. I'm very appreciative of thiswonderful scheme.

A6 Crossing Signs
Walk Leaflets
Walks
The group's May meeting discussed the state of the footpathsand bridleways around the village and identified areas forvegetation clearance and repair work. There were furtherdiscussions on A6 crossing signs (see below), the Borough'sSeasonal Vegetation Cut and the Footpaths in Wilstead leaflet.
The next meeting is on in the small hall inthe Village Hall starting at 10.00am. Come along and see whatthe group do. You will be most welcome.
Mowing and brushcutting sessions are being undertaken 2 or 3times a month so if you know of any footpath (n.b. notpavement) that is overgrown or needs mowing please contactthe group.
The next working party is planned for . Itis hoped to install footpath furniture such as way mark posts orkissing gates as well as doing some vegetation clearancenearby. Please contact the number below if you are interestedin helping.
If you have walked to Houghton Conquest using the footpathwhich runs from Wilstead Church to the windmill in HoughtonConquest, you will know that it crosses the A6 behind the newdevelopment off Luton Road. The group has requested thatthe Borough put up 'Pedestrians Crossing' warning signssimilar to those on the new Bedford bypass near Kempston. Ifyou think this would improve safety on this busy stretch ofroad please contactexpressing support for this request
The free re vamped Wilstead Circular Walk 1 leaflets are nowavailable in the Post Office, Woolpack & Red Lion. Apologiesif you find the leaflet holder empty people keep takingcopies!). We will try and keep them filled up.
Discussions are still ongoing with the Borough regarding there-printing of the Footpaths in Wilstead. Hopefully theseleaflets, which show all the footpaths and bridleways in theparish, will be available in a few months time
The early May walk was around Haynes and provided greatviews over to Chicksands Wood and from the top of the ridge, over Bedford to the hills beyond. The route went along the twonew permissive paths which now allow you to walk off roadfrom Wilstead to the Greyhound pub in Haynes.
The late May walk was around Woburn so hopefully theweather was kind and the group survived the wild animals inthe park. The next walk, probably around Dunton, will be on
. Meet in Whitworth Way Car Park at6.30pm.
