A Message
from
Fr. Tony
Herold
QUESTIONS BASED ON OUR READINGS What do you know about the Trinity from the last lines of the second reading for today’s Mass: “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you?” God’s nature is love, and he has invited us to come along in his com-pany. What are the implications for our communities?
Hard to believe but a week from Thursday our next bishop will be ordained. Transitions of this kind are monumental for the Church and filled with hope even as we say goodbye to a very won-derful and faithful shepherd that has graced our diocese for the last ten years: Bishop Amos. As Vicar General, I have been involved in the planning process along with countless other mem-bers of the bishop’s staff. Some have wondered how the venue for the ordination of Bishop elect Zinkula was chosen. It was not an easy task. We looked at larger venues in the area, but those that were not booked were not very desirable. The Cathedral, which holds about 800 or so people, is undergoing renovation and has no air conditioning at the present time. We needed a venue in the Diocese of Davenport—hence the Illinois Quad Cities was out of the question. Saint John Vianney holds the largest capacity of any church on this side of the river and thus seemed to be the logical choice. As you know, this event will be live streamed. We are publish-ing information concerning this
elsewhere in the bulletin. Each parish is limited in the amount of tickets available for this event. With 94 priests in the diocese, 50 permanent deacons, civic and religious leaders need-ing to attend this event, seats are very limited. This is regrettable but something that is beyond our control. ********************* Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity. This is truly a beautiful mystery of our faith! Early on it seemed that the disciples knew only two parts of God, Jesus and his Father (and they were not very sure about these). So before he left, Christ said this to them:
Philip, and the rest of you, if you know me you know the Father. He is in me fully, and after I go back I will make a home in you by send-ing the Holy Spirit. This Com-forter will be the very love that I and the Father have for each other and for you. That way I will be with you until the end of time! (paraphrase)
He was talking about the third per-son of the Trinity, which nestles close to our souls if we let it. Only if we let it. The Holy Spirit is graceful and deep and comforting, like a blanket in cold winter. It is the love between the Fa-ther and Son. So how can God interact with us in these three very different ways? By being “plural,” that is, by being three “persons.” How can three be one? By not letting the number three be a divider but a plus sign. All three, in a great dynamic of love, are so close to one and other that they are One God. Now we understand.
Beth Budelier: Supporting Life Through the Couple to Couple League
Throughout her life, Beth Budelier has been moved to pray for and assist mothers, who are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. She explains, “In high school and college I volunteered at the Hope Crisis Pregnancy Center in my home-town and I was among a group that started Ambrosians for Life when I was a student at St. Ambrose University, which promotes the Catholic worldview of respect for all human life from conception to natural death. We provided assis-tance for local pregnancy centers, like the Women’s Choice Center and Birthright, by assembling layettes, having dia-per drives, and doing yard work and other housekeeping projects. The Ambrosians for Life encouraged me to pray and witness for life: we attended regular hours of Adoration, said the Rosary in the Chapel weekly, and prayed and side-walk-counseled outside of Planned Parenthood in Bettendorf every Tuesday, the day abortions were performed.” Beth’s passion for pro-life took on another dimension when she attended a natural family planning class in Galesburg, with her fiancé, Al. She says, “The class was taught by The Couple to Couple League, a Catholic organization, and although it taught us how to observe, chart, and interpret my fertility signs; it also had a heavy emphasis on St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body (TOB). Learning about TOB opened my eyes to the gift of my body, my fertility and married love. I also learned a lot about how harmful contraception can be to a woman’s fertility and how oftentimes hormonal contraceptives are actually abortifacients – they don’t allow the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus, result-ing in an early abortion. This information brought new meaning to my understanding of what it meant to be pro-life. I was upset that this information wasn’t more readily available. Furthermore, I wanted to be pro-life in how I lived and to encourage others to do the same. I could do that by using Natural Family Planning (NFP). Using NFP allowed Al and I to respect every act of marital love by not ever closing off the potential to bring about a new life.” Beth and Al were grateful that an organization like the Couple to Couple League existed, because remaining open to God’s plan in their family as brought so much joy and peace to their marriage. When Beth began to pray about why there aren’t more NFP teaching couples in the Quad City area, she heard Holy Spirit respond, “Why aren’t you and Al a teaching couple?” Alhough she did not feel qualified or think she had enough time, they followed God’s calling and began the 9-month training process and are so glad they did. For the past 5 years, Beth and Al have officially been a teaching couple through the Couple to Couple League. Beth shares, “We are continually blessed by the couples we teach, their desire for truth, and their openness to God in their lives.” She says that it is particularly rewarding to hear many students share how they are first seeing the deep love that God has for them and adds “I’m always a bit in awe of how powerful the words of John Paul II are and how they draw people to Jesus. Al and I are just the messengers.” Beth clarifies, “The Catholic Church certainly doesn’t teach that every couple needs to have as many children as possi-ble, but She does teach that we need to be open to receiving a child.” Beth adds, “There have been two instances since we started teaching 5 years ago, when a couple has come to us and shared how they’ve had a change of heart in that they’re open to having more children, even though they initially thought their families were complete. I just mark this up to the Holy Spirit working in their lives, because of their obedience to God and His commands.” If you would like to learn more about teaching NFP through the Couple to Couple

Parish Leadership Nominations Needed
Parish leadership consists of five commissions made up of 6-9 people who focus on the pillars of parish life: Evangelization & Discipleship, Worship & Prayer, Hospitality & Relationships, Service & Justice and Stewardship & Communications. Recent initiatives of parish leader-ship have been the Alpha pilot, “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” our sister parish in Haiti and the May rosary campaign. We are seeking visionary leaders who are intentional disciples with a heart for evangelization, who prac-tice prayerful discernment and who are deeply committed to St. Paul the Apostle parish. During the month of June, please submit the names of people who you feel fit this description. Nomina-tions can be placed in the box in the Gathering Space or made on the parish website under the Ad-ministration tab. Nominees will be invited to participate in a discern-ment process in July.

Implementation Update We are pleased to report that St. Paul the Apostle School was recently awarded a grant for $25,000 from the Scott County Regional Authority to help offset the cost of upgrading the electrical service in the school. MidAmerican Energy will be upgrading the power service in the alley to the south of the school. Shaw Electric will be doing the work inside the school. We hope to get started in the next 3-4 weeks when the nec-essary equipment arrives. The Facilities Planning Committee is meeting regularly to work on preparations for the church renovation project. They are currently evaluating bids for construction management services as well as inves-tigating alternatives for replacing the boiler. An Aesthetics Committee has been formed to investigate alternatives for the interior finishes of the church in order to develop design docu-ments for vendors. Initial conversations have addressed the pews and the flooring. This group is guided by a desire to build upon the historic character of the church and to emphasize the overall gothic design. Lastly, there has also been an initial meeting of an Audio/Visual Com-mittee. There was a discussion of the unique sound needs for the tradi-tional choir, the contemporary groups and individual cantors. In the near future, a consultant will complete a site survey and evaluate our existing equipment. We are still working to raise money towards a building addition for the school so that we can move the fine arts classes to the main building. If you have not already done so, please consider making a pledge today! Pledge cards are available in the Gathering Space and the vestibule. You can also make a donation on the parish website using online giv-ing.
