couple of weeks of the Easter season. We pray for those

There are a few who have graciously provided coffee and

We are looking for additional help in continuing to provide

“The poor you will always have with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them.” [Mk 14:7]

There is a real need for individual packets of dried milk and single serving size pork and beans, tuna fish, Vienna sausage, or any other food item that come in five ounce cans. These items are pre-cooked and can be eaten directly from the can if necessary. I am trying to figure out how to package these items in

something other than a brown paper lunch bag since I like to put several items in this bag for a complete day of food and the lunch bags aren’t big or sturdy enough to hold everything. If you have any ideas please let me know.

Those in need are so grateful for your gifts of non-perishable food, clothing, and toiletries.

Thank you for all you do for those in need and may God bless you.

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice

St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by Jim Demetrio and Griff Turner, is on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the chapel. Our next meeting will be on June 4, 2018.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653, says:

The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Chris-tian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scrip-tures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dia-logue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the divine oracles.’

Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst with ours.”

Pray for Vocations What kinds of people become priests, sisters or brothers?

Are they uncommonly holy, unusually

saint-like? No. They are people who make

mistakes, people who aren’t afraid to be

human while in God’s service.

Are they people who can’t face the

competition and cruelty of the “real”

world? No. They are people who believe

that through ministry they can immerse

themselves in the world and make positive changes.

Are they people who don’t relate well with other people? No. They are

people who love others — people who find real satisfaction chatting with a

93-year-old parishioner, holding the hand of a cancer patient, listening to the

troubles of a streetwise teen.

They are people with the courage to touch lives, hearts and souls in a high-

tech, unchurched world. Are you that kind of person?

Serra for priestly and religious vocations

A vocation must be nurtured for a lifetime, not just until

ordination or the taking of vows. You can help nurture the vocations of

priests, sisters and brothers by praying, listening, and expressing

appreciation. A life of service needs support from those served.

Conversations at Table

May The Wind Be Ever At Your Back May God hold you in the hollow of his hand

Deacon Chuck Lanham, April 09, 2013

T he same word in Greek – pneuma (πνευµα) – and in Hebrew – ruach – can mean breath, wind, or

spirit. The Spirit of God is mentioned in both the Old and New Testament as breath, wind, or spirit. In

Job we read “The Spirit of God made me and the breath of the Almighty has given me life” (Job 33:4). After his

resurrection, Jesus appeared to the disciples and breathed on them and said “…receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn 20:22).

And in the Acts of the Apostles we read “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming,

and it filled the whole house where they were sitting … And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit …” (Acts 2:2-4). Jesus

told Nicodemus “You must be born from above. The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound that it makes

but do not know where it comes from or where it goes; so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit” (Jn 3:7-8).

Just as we cannot see the wind but can perceive its effects, so it is with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God.

Even with the most sensitive equipment we cannot capture an image of the wind; it is no different with the Holy

Spirit. But while we cannot physically see, touch, feel, or detect the Holy Spirit we can observe and experience the

effects the Holy Spirit produces on us.

When the wind blows we see trees bend, dust whirl, waves appear, and clouds move across the sky

without any visible means of motive power. At times the wind is like a gentle whisper, tickling our skin, almost

unfelt or detected. At other times the wind can be a terrible and terrifying force, such as a hurricane or a tornado,

full of sound and fury, yielding almost unimaginable destructive power.

The Spirit of God is like the wind; always present, blowing soft or hard, moving us in the direction only

God knows is best. And like the wind, we can either relax and go with the flow or struggle and push back. Airline

pilots love to fly with a tail wind because the flight is much smoother, it takes less fuel, and the flight time is

shorter. They know that to fly into the wind will result in a longer, bumpier, and more costly flight. Shouldn’t we

receive the Holy Spirit in the same manner? Give yourself over to the Holy Spirit and let Him carry you through

life. As an old Irish blessing says so very well:

May the road rise up to meet you,

may the wind be ever at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face

and the rain fall softly on your fields.

And until we meet again,

may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
