Clout Report – by Sam Yeates

This year hosted the first Double Metric Clout in Essex. As we pulled into the field the rain ceased. We all knew it was going to be…shall we say interesting. I had increased my poundage, James was shooting “allys” and Mark had changed his cams. Nevertheless this didn’t dampen the Mayflower spirit, as we knew whoever won their group would win a county record. As we started, the arrows were cart wheeling down the field but luckily into the target.

At lunchtime we began to share tales of the day so far. It was enlightening to find out that Mark was aiming at something that was liable to move. After we had a laugh at him, Sandy came over and told Neil he had found some snake eggs in his garden, then handed him the envelope. The prank was set. As Sandy let go of the washer, inside the envelope, it began to rattle. Neil leapt out of his skin and threw the en-velope at Liz. With a tremendous amount of laughter, we got our five-minute warning.

As I was getting ready, I looked back out onto the field and asked, “Where have all the targets gone?” Let’s just say I was made to feel an idiot for the rest of the day.

By the end of the day, once the targets had been packed away, we found out that Mark and myself had got a county claim. What an excellent result for Mayflower at the first, ever, Double Metric Clout in Essex. Well done to all that participated.

30th August Holden’s Double American ‘Hatfield’ Charity shoot

Not a popular event with Mayflower Juniors, but perhaps they were at the Norfolk FITA Star & 70m event. However, my spy did spot Aaron Gourley shooting the full double American round. Well done Aaron and I bet you were tired after 15 dozen arrows. I do know that my spy was, but he’s old. Sorry Steve.

5th September Southend & District Open

Not content with shooting all day Saturday Joe and Sam ventured to Southend and continued on Sunday. Now that’s dedication. Well done!

18th Sep, Bowmen of Malgrave Moonlight shoot.

It’s odd how it takes a dark cold night to get 16 junior and senior members onto the shooting line at 8 pm, but it does sound like it was good evening. For a lot of participants, it was dinner at the barbeque having just finished the club championship round. How they saw the targets can be seen in Lesley and Neal’s shoot report on page 7.

Sophie Brown and Ellie Vidgeon-Hart won Junior lady compound Gold and Silver medals, as did Joe Frank-lin and David Fall for the junior gent compound class with a valiant effort from Alex Body, Sam Yeates and James Howell.

Mayflower Club Championships – 18 Sep

FITA 70m, Cadet 60m & 40m Junior & novice rounds

Not for many years has Mayflower run a club championship round so Steve Fenton and Lesley Howell pitched in and organised one. We were hoping for more senior members to take part, but it was well sup-ported by you junior members. Thank you.

While I’m writing about achievements, I came across this act of generosity and achievement on the county website submitted by proud mum, Diane who has given me permission to reproduce the article. Some of you may have already seen it, but I’m pleased to be able to relay it to you directly. I think Jordan’s words say it all and 754 from a possible 972 for his age in windy conditions I think is excellent.

“Hi my name is Jordan, I am 9 years old and took up archery 2 years ago.

I have just raised over £600 for two children’s charities; Great Ormond Children’s Hospital and CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity. My aim was to score over 500 points shooting at a distance of 30 yards and with 108 arrows. I took up this challenge on the 25th September at my Archery Club Phoenix Archers in Weeley and managed to score 754 despite the very windy conditions. I am looking forward to presenting the charities with a cheque soon”.

Jordan Johnson

If you wish to support Jordan’s chosen charities, he is still collecting donations and to save publishing personal details, I will either supply Diane’s address or forward cheques. Roger Glover

Clophill FITA Fest /FITA 720 and individual head to heads

“The weekend of the Clophill FITA Fest once again has come and gone this year Mayflower being repre-sented well with Sophie Brown, Alex Croft, Phil Glover, Michael Judd, Trevor Chapman and Kristine Kirchhoff.

During the Saturday both Alex and Sophie shot new Pb’s Sophie adding a huge 30 onto hers to add to the 40 she put on it two weeks before, breaking the 600 barrier for the first time. In the head to head we had someone from mayflower in the quarter-finals of each discipline with most of them winning many rounds to make it there. Sophie had us all on the edge not doing things simply and took her match to a one-arrow shoot off which she unfortunately lost shooting a 9 to her opponents 10. Alex also shot well, winning his first head to head which was well deserved.

Sunday

Mayflower again represented by a fair few archers but a couple down from the Saturday however the weather conditions playing havoc with the archers across the whole field with a strong wind, somehow though both Alex croft and Sophie brown both pulled out there senior 6 gold ends at 70 M within a dozen of each other. Alex went on to shoot another PB, 1 point more than Saturday’s score All the others also shoot well although during the day we did loose Phil Glover as he decided enough was enough. So it once again came to the knock out rounds and we were represented in the quarter finals in all disciplines except women’s recurve, Alex Croft went to this stage where he put up a great fight with paralympian and world record holder John Stubbs and took him to 6-4 in the new sets system that was being used this weekend which was very good and very close. Sophie came up against the same women as the Saturday and this time beat her but once again leaving it until the last possible set to resolve it. Sophie then moving on into the semis where she came up against the number one seed of the day, this didn’t faze her at all though and she went on to put up her best fight and she lost it 6-4 after being at 4-4 it went to the last set where it was close but Sophie then moved into the bronze medal match where she shoot her socks of and with a lot of support from others she went on to win the match 7-3 and finished the day 3rd. After a weekend of great weather with the sun and the wind the Sunday provided the archers with Mayflower put up a good fight in all areas of the shoot and did the club proud, as I’m sure you will all agree.”

By Ben Brown Our thanks Ben who, having recently passed into the senior ranks is now at Portsmouth University. We wish him well in his studies and hope to see him again soon.

GNAS ‘November Challenge’ postal tournament.

We will again be submitting scores for this national postal round using the simple rules given below.

3 dozen (36) arrows on a 60 cm face at 20 yards using 10 zone scoring and must be shot anytime during November. Sighting arrows per current rules. Age eligibility as 31st October 2010.

Trophies will be awarded by GNAS for the first three places in each group.

Scores collected will be sorted into age and bow style groups sent to GNAS as a club entry. Roger and Neal will be chasing everyone for names later this month.

Details of age groups and bow styles will be on the club notice board nearer the date and we’re willing to advise you if you need clarification. Club score sheets will be provided in order to simplify matters for me, but I will need you to write your GNAS numbers on your score sheet.

We can shoot the round together on club shooting dates, but you can shoot it as often or any time you like. Only your best score will be submitted.

Good shooting,

Roger Glover

Sophie’s trip to Northern Ireland

Junior Euronations match, Belfast, 17th & 18th July

It all started when Paul Clark told me to submit my scores to Steve Taylor a member of the English Archery Federation. I then received a call from him on one of my practice sessions over at SDAC and got told I was not aloud to tell anyone until the weekend. On the Thursday before flying out I travelled up to my aunts, so I could be at Birmingham airport for 7:30. So on Friday morning in we made our way to the airport. When I arrived I found Jodie Barnes be-cause she was the only one I knew on the team we all got our luggage checked-in then walked over to over sized luggage to put our bow boxes sorted it was quite scary watching them go. We then all headed of so we all said goodbye to family we then sat in departures and got to know each other, when we boarded the plane we got a message from the captain saying good luck for the weekend ahead. On the Friday afternoon we all when for a practice at all of our distances which I was please about so I could practise because the wind there was worse than the Mayflower field when that gets really bad. On Saturday everyone got up we all had breakfast then headed of to the FITA 900 shoot where we had the Lord Major of Lisburn spoke to all of us we shoot the first 5 dozen then had lunch where a barbeque lunch, which was supposed to last we had 2 ½ hours for lunch, but they reduced it to 1 and a half and we completed the last 2 ½ dozen. When we finished, we headed back to our hotel 10 minutes down the road at most we then got told what are entertainment was for the evening it was two games of bowling and one game of laser quest and that was after having dinner with lord mayor of Lisbon we then went and played bowling and laser quest when we finished we went back to the hotel and finished up for the night. Sunday was another early start we started another FITA 900 the same as yesterday but this time at the end we all got our medals and after that the water fight that every one had been looking forward to. We were staying until Monday morning so we went out Sunday night to Pizza Hut then we went through the arcades and played on most of the games there then we went to the cinema to see ‘Inception’ then went back to the restaurant and asked for hot chocolates and they said at 11:30 that they closed their machine but they went and turned them back on just for the team. On Monday we headed for McDonalds for breakfast then went back to the hotel to pack the rest of our stuff then headed for a quick tour of Dublin then to the airport to fly back to Birmingham airport. England came home with the team trophy and we all left with at least two medals each we also all got given a piece of crystal as a memory of the Euro nations. Sophie Brown

Bowmen of Malgrave Moonlight Shoot September 18th was the Bowmen of Malgrave Moonlight shoot; if any of you have never taken part in this event you really should give it a go. Everyone shoots 3-dozen arrows in 3’s, at 30 mtrs on an 80cm face but with one a small twist, you don’t start shooting until 8pm! We arrived at the field about 6pm and set up the Mayflower village, which became our home for the evening. The smell of the BBQ wafted over to the tent line luring you

to it and as you get a ticket for one free visit, it didn’t take us long to adventure over. The atmosphere as with every year was buzzing, and as darkness fell you could see glow sticks illuminating along the line and being attached to equipment. At 8pm it was time for sighters, the whistle blew and we were off, it soon became apparent that the targets did not line with the positions marked on the shooting line, which seemed to cause some confusion with archers shooting incorrect targets. After a couple of ends everyone settled into it and seemed to be having a fantastic time, you could hear the banter going on up and down the line. The weather was very kind to us, but did become chilly as the evening went on but with soup, coffee and tea being passed out up and down the line everyone’s spirits were kept high. The shoot finished at around 11 pm and you could tell fun was had by all but everyone was feeling weary and ready for their beds.

By Lesley & Neal Howell

SCAS Rayleigh

On the 4th September at Rayleigh town archery club we took part in the southern counties record status and rose award junior competition.

The day began quite warm with a mild wind. Our team consisted of Joe Franklin, Sam Yeates, Sophie Brown, Aaron Gourley, James Gridley and Alex Body.

When I arrived it was great to look down the tent line and see the mayflower junior flag flying from the captains tent. During the day we had a few visitors. The first visitor was Alex Croft who stayed ‘til lunch, but was put to work scoring for Joe. At lunch Neal, Lesley and James Howell came to see us. The last visitor we had was Dave Scorah who came over to see how we were all doing.

We had three podium positions. Joe Franklin won the Junior Gents Compound York with a score of 1038. Sophie Brown won the Bristol 3 lady with a score of 1254, and Alex Body won the Bristol 4 with a score of 1154.

Overall we all had a very good day and will want to come back next year.

Editor’s notes

Thank you all for your contributions to this newsletter. Thank you also to Sophie Brown for, having been selected to represent England, put her experience into words for all of us to enjoy. By sending in your bits of information personal views and telling us what you’ve been up to, I hope it makes more interesting reading and a bumper edition. It also makes my tasks much easier.

Keep up the good work because there are plenty of competitive and fun indoor shoots coming up. If you think that archery is getting too serious, Racketts AC annual Worcester shoot is coming up. Yes, it is a competition, but it is also a lot of fun and fancy dress with mince pies thrown in.

Another ‘first’ in this issue, is the instant quiz on page 10. If I get a good response, I hope to make this a regular feature, but will welcome any assistance you offer by way of puzzles and caption competitions.

Good shooting,

Roger Glover

Thank you all for giving me a score to represent Mayflower and well done to all especially trophy winners, Sophie Brown and Alex Body. We’ll look forward to presenting your trophies soon. At the time of the event they were affiliated through Rayleigh Town AC, but have since transferred to Mayflower Juniors. Consequently, I consider that their achievements should be noted. Please join me also in welcoming them and David Fall as new members to the club.

Last year you held your division 2 position in the league as the only Junior team in division 2. This year Martin has entered a team in which all Mayflower members can participate; seniors as well. That doesn’t mean you can sit back and relax as senior members will need your help if you wish to gain promotion again. Martin is giving preference to junior members.

For those who are relatively new, details of the league are that you shoot 36 arrows into a 40 cm target at 15 yards and you do it at on our own territory. Clubs all round the county do the same around the same date. You then hand your scores to Martin Vidgeon-Hart who will enter the best three.

Results of matches will be posted on the notice board as soon as they are available.

The dates for shooting the matches are on the Club Diary page.

Good shooting.

Andy Harris League

This looks interesting, is new to Mayflower and is being organised by Lesley Howell who has entered a compound and a recurve team. Thank you, Lesley.

It involves everybody shooting 36 arrows into an 80 cm face at 30 metres on a pre-determined day and time. Now how hard can that be? Except that we will be shooting at the field.

Lesley will collect the scores and enter the best three in each discipline. So come along for a bit of fun and support your club.

Once again,

Good shooting

Instant Quiz

This picture shows a club team at a recent national Field Championships competition. Amongst them are several Mayflower members in disguise. (not wearing Mayflower colours)

The question is, for one point, how many members of Mayflower Archers are in the picture?

And now the hard bit for one point each, can you name them?

Sorry, there are no prizes, but members answering correctly will be credited in the January issue along with the correct answers.

Members of Panther Bowhunters are excluded from entering as are members of Mayflower club committee because they know all club members. Good luck!

Archery GB Progress Awards

Mayflower have now subscribed to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an adult beginner incentive.

Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores.

Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors regularly now there will be opportunities to start during the winter months.

See David Scorah for full details of scores and how to get them.

Archer of the Year Awards

In addition to all the awards offered by GNAS Junior Committee, (details on the back page) they have decided make a special award called “Archer of the Year”. Below is an extract from the website explaining it all.

“The Junior Committee thought it would be nice to award a Special Award to the Archer of the year. It will be presented annually at the Junior Indoor Championships, to those of you who have supported the indoor and outdoor Junior Championships, and also participated in the July National and November Chal-lenge postal competitions. The winners will be decided on their results by the committee.”

By way of a starter, Mayflower run the postal tournaments ‘July Nationals’ and ‘November Challenge’ so all you have to do to be eligible for this award is to enter the Junior National Outdoor Championships and the Junior National Indoor Championships. Both are well worth entering and I’ve had a great time in the past supporting junior members.

Mayflower Distance Awards

These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are:

Black—20 yards; White—30 yards; Blue—40 yards; Red—50 yards; Gold—60 yards; Green—80 yards.

There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from David Scorah.

Easy isn’t it?

Feather & ArrowFeather & ArrowFeather & ArrowFeather & Arrow

Mayflower Archers have introduced this scheme to assist our new and existing juniors and all be-ginners, including adults with their development in archery. The FITA Beginner’s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and re-warded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance. Skill. Knowledge & Know How. The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDSFEATHER AWARDSFEATHER AWARDSFEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled be-ginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer’s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDSARROW AWARDSARROW AWARDSARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). The FITA Beginner’s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6-10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 m and even further to near 30m. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring.

‘JAWS’ awards

Annually, the junior committee at GNAS run a junior awards scheme (jaws). Trophies are given by GNAS for the winners and runners up claiming the most points in the scheme. Points are claimed throughout the year for entering ‘Open’, County, Regional and National events, for claiming ‘Rose’ and FITA awards or at-taining a ‘Six Gold End’.
