Welcome to Fukuoka - Get orientated!

Trains ¬ 철도

There are three systems “Nishitetsu”, “Sub-

way”, and “JR”. The subway links the two

city centers, Tenjin and Hakata to the Air-

port. Take “Nishitetsu” to visit sites such as

Dazaifu or Yanagawa. Take “JR” to travel out-

side Fukuoka to Nagasaki, Beppu and the new

Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima.

후쿠오카 시내 철도는 크게 ‘니시테쓰 전철’ ‘지하철’

‘JR’로 나뉜다. 지하철은 공항과 시내 중심가인 하카타,

덴진을 이어준다. 다자이후나 야나가와 등 관광지는 ‘

니시테쓰 전철’를 이용하면 편리하다. 나가사키, 벳푸,

가고시마 등 후쿠오카현 외의 지역을 방문하거나

신칸센을 탄다면 ‘JR’을 이용하자.

Buses ¬ 버스

Go almost anywhere aboard Nishitetsu Bus

in Fukuoka City! Rates vary by distance, but

are just ¥100 within the ¥100 Bus area (see p.

5 ~ 6 yellow area) including Hakata Sta., Su-

miyoshi, Yakuineki-mae, Tenjin and Gofuku-

machi. Combined with Showa Bus, you can go

as far as Itoshima from Hakata Station.

후쿠오카 시내를 편리하게 돌아볼 수 있는 니시테쓰

버스. 요금은 승차거리에 따라 상이. 후쿠오카 도심부에

한해서 100엔 버스를 운행 중. 운행 지역은 하카타역,

스미요시, 야쿠인 에키마에, 덴진, 고후쿠마치가 포함

된다 (5~6쪽 지도의 노란색으로 표시된 지역에 한함).

니시테쓰 버스 외에 쇼와버스가 ‘하카타역~이토시마

방면’ 노선을 운행 중.

How to ride 버스 타는 방법

●  Check the destination on the front and

side displays of the bus’s exterior. Board via

the center doors.

●  If paying cash, take a ticket as you board.

If you have a nimoca IC card wave it over the

sensor, ticket not required.

●  Bus stops and fees are displayed on the

monitor next to a driver. The fee appears un-

der the ticket number.

●  Fees are displayed on the monitor above

the driver. Match your ticket number to get

your fee.

● Push the stop button to alert the driver that

you want to get off at the next stop.

●  Drop the fee and your ticket into the box

next to the driver and get off from the front

door. If you need change, drop cash into the

box next to the driver. When you are using ni-

moca, wave your card above the sensor.

●  버스가 오면 전면이나 승차구 옆의 전광판에 떠

있는 행선지 번호를 확인하고 목적지에 가는 버스가

오면 가운데 문으로 승차한다

●  현금으로 운임을 지불할 경우에는 승차시에

정리권을 뽑는다. IC카드 [nimoca]를 갖고 있을

때에는 승차구의 단말기에 카드를 터치한다 (이

경우에는 정리권이 필요 없음).

●  정차하는 버스 정거장 이름과 운임은, 수시로

운전사 옆의 모니터에 표시된다. 갖고 있는 정리권

번호 아래에 표시 되어 있는 것이 운임이다.

●  목적지 버스 정거장 이름이 모니터에 표시 되고

안내방송이 흐르면 하차 버튼을 누른다.

●  운전사 옆의 박스에 정리권과 정확한 금액의

운임을 넣고, 앞 쪽의 출구로 하차한다. 돈을 바꿔야 할

때에는 동전교환기를 이용하자. (거스름돈이 지급되지

않으므로 미리 동전을 교환해야 한다). nimoca를

갖고 있을 경우에는 내리는 문의 nimoca 단말기에

카드를 터치한다.

동전과 선불 카드로 사용할 수 있다. 휴대폰 로밍

This noodle restaurant was estab-

lished way back in 1890, near to

the supposed birthplace of Japa-

nese udon noodles, Jotenji Temple.

The techniques they use are even older, dating

back to the 13th century. This strict adherence

to tradition is one of the reasons for the restau-

rant’s popularity, with lengthy queues forming

at lunchtime. The light brown noodles contain

wheat germ and bran and have a marvelous

texture; they are also slightly firmer than

the soft noodles common in today’s “Hakata

udon”. To enjoy the simple but delicious taste,

try kake udon (udon in hot broth, ¥450) or

zaru udon (chilled udon served on a bamboo

슌게츠앙우동의 발상지라고 전해지는 조텐지 근처에

자리한 가게. 1890년에 창업한 면 제조공장에서 13

세기의 우동가루를 재현하여 만든 면이 호평을 받아,

런치타임에는 줄 서서 기다려야 할 정도다. 갈색을

띤 면에는 밀눈과 밀껍질을 첨가하여 씹을수록 밀의

향기가 입 안에 퍼진다. 또 부드러운 면이 많은 현재의

‘하카타우동’과 달리 적당히 부드러우면서도 쫄깃쫄깃한

것이 특징. 면 자체의 맛을 음미하려면 심플한 카케우동

(450엔)이나 자루우동(550엔)을 추천한다. 토핑

종류도 10가지로 충실하며, 마루텐(어묵튀김)이나

고보텐(우엉튀김), 명란젓과 같은 하카타 명물이

갖추어져 있다. 참마와 명란젓을 올린 붓카케우동

(900엔)은 크리미한 식감에 매콤함이 감돌아 그 맛이

런치타임을 제외하고는 우동 면 양에 관계없이 가격이

老舗麺工場の小麦が香り立つうどんを食べ放題で

(deep-fried burdock) and maruten (deep-fried

ground fish). The bukkake udon (cold udon with

various toppings, ¥900) has a creamy taste

with a hint of spiciness. There’s no need to stop

at one helping either, because both udon and

soba are all-you-can-eat (except 11:00–14:00,

when the maximum is 3 helpings). Incidentally,

the house record is 12 helpings!

Bistro la Tortue favourite choice. The most popular item on the

menu, however, is a specialty of Alsace known

as Choucroute - a generous portion of ultra

tender pork shins served with sauerkraut and

and any of Yamaguchi’s well-selected and rea-

sonably-priced wines, it makes for a fine meal.

For dessert, his original Black Beer Ice Cream

is not to be missed and guaranteed to please

both the gents and the ladies. For a cozy din-

ner with true personal attention and authentic

French flavors, you’d be hard pressed to find

a better spot than Bistro la Tortue.

Josui-dori

one Fukuoka's most stylish

streets, Josui-dori has a more

laid-back, sophisticated feel

than busier areas such as

Daimyo or Tenjin. The trees lin-

ing the road are also a welcome touch, making

it a great spot for an early summer stroll.

After turning into Josui-dori from Yakuin-

odori, you will soon see on your left the Kyushu

Energy Science Center and Kyuden Memo-

rial Gymnasium. A walk along Josui-dori will

eventually lead us to the Fukuoka City Zoo-

logical Garden and Minami Park, but before

that there are lots of shops to explore. Among

the many furniture stores, flower shops and

restaurants some of the most eye-catching

are the confectioneries, where all manner of

sweet delights can be found. Rest for a while

at chocolate specialty shop Cacao Romance

or tart and quiche shop Le Cercle, which are

both also cafes. Down a small side street is

French-style confectionery 16-ku, whose au-

thentic almond-flavored baked biscuits are a

specialty of owner-chef Mr. Mishima.

It's also fun just to walk around and ad-

mire the unique architecture, like the rusk

In complete contrast, Japa-

nese confectionery Muraoka

Sohonpo is built in a traditional

Japanese style. Trees line the path from the

gate to the entrance, and the low-key mood

brings to mind a Japanese teahouse. Kimono

shop Tamaya, meanwhile, has a surprisingly

modern interior.

If you can drag yourself away from the

shops, moving a little further up the hill leads

to a dramatic change of scenery as Minami

Park appears on the left-hand side like a green

oasis in the heart of the city. As well as the

zoological garden and botanical garden, there

is also a viewing platform offering 360° views

of Fukuoka. A fitting way to end an interesting

and enjoyable walk.

아름답기로 유명.

야쿠인 오오도오리에서 조스이 도오리로 들어가

조금 더 걸어가면 왼편에는 ‘규슈 에너지관’과 ‘규슈전력

기념체험관’이 보이며 ‘후쿠오카시 동물원’과 ‘니시코엔’

으로 이어지는 완만한 언덕길이 나온다. 도로변의 다양한

가게 중에서도 눈길을 끄는 것이 스위츠 가게다. 초콜릿

세르쿠르’는 카페가 마련되어 있어 쉬어갈 수도 있다.

일본 전국적으로 유명한 ‘프랑스 과자 16구’는 조스이

도오리 골목길에 있다.

개성 넘치는 건물을 둘러보는 것도 좋을 듯. 러스크 숍

‘온리원’은 커다란 붉은 문이 인상적. 커스텀 키친 쇼 룸 ‘

키친 하우스’는 커다란 창이 나 있어 탁 트인 분위기. 꽃집

‘마지오킷드’는 곡선을 잘 표현한 건물로 후쿠오카시

제1회 도시경관상을 수상했다. 한편 화과자 전문점인

‘무라오카 초혼텐’은 세미 일본풍. 가게 입구까지 나무가

심어져 있어 일본 전통 다실을 떠올리게 한다. 기모노

전문점 ‘타마야’는 블랙을 기조로 한 모던한 분위기.

길을 따라 계속 걸어가면 또 다른 풍경이 펼쳐진다.

왼편으로는 니시코엔이 펼쳐지며 새소리가 지저귄다.

동물원, 식물원 외에도 전망대가 있으니 멋진 풍경을

standing out from all the other stylish shops along Josui-dori

is a nameless vegetable shop (yaoya). They sell vegetables

in front of a private dwelling without a shop sign. Look for the

flag saying "Ouridashi" (Sale!). Or maybe they don't need a sign as

it’s obvious what they are doing! Much of the produce is sourced from

the Amagi wholesale market and some are 30% less than other su-

permarket and possibly fresher. Enjoy a Showa-era experience from

the setting and old school display and service.

도오리에서 조금 다른 분위기를 띠는

곳이 이름 없는 채소가게. 일반 가정집

앞에 선반을 마련해 야채를 판매하고

있는데 간판은 걸려있지 않다. 딱

보면 채소가게란 것을 알 수 있으니

별 다른 장식이 없어도 된다고 생각한

걸까. 규슈산을 중심으로 판매 중인

채소 중 일부는 슈퍼보다 30% 정도

저렴하기도. 외관도 가격도, 과거로

돌아간 듯한 가게이다.

멋진 프랑스 여성과 만나기로 한 비 내리는 어느 날.

편안한 분위기에서 오랜 이야기를 나누고 싶었기에

특별히 엘르 카페 가장 안쪽에 위치한 룸을 빌렸다.

6~8명 정도가 이용하기에 딱 좋은 프라이빗한

공간은 1시간 단위로 이용가능. 특별한 이와의 만남,

생일 파티, 회의 등 여러모로 사용할 수 있다.

천장에서 내리쬐는 햇살과 새하얀 인테리어가

울적한 날씨까지 잊게 해주는 엘르 카페에 그녀가

도착 했다. 규 슈일불학관(九州日仏学舘 )

부관장인 루이자 바바시. 프랑스에서 바캉스를

보내고 막 후쿠오카로 돌아왔다고. 업무상 양국을

자주 오가는 그녀는 여행을 좋아해 세계 각국을

시간 나는 대로 방문한다.

프랑스의 대학에서 국제교류와 일본어를 배운

후 파리와 뉴욕, 도쿄 등의 교육기관과 사진관련

회사에서 일했고 2006년에 규슈일불학관의

부학장에 취임했다. 프랑스어와 프랑스 문화 보급,

규슈와 프랑스의 문화교류를 목적으로 다양한

사업을 추진 중. 프랑스 문화와 관련된 행사,

강좌를 기획∙주최하거나 리셉션 파티를 열어서

참가자들을 하나로 만드는 프랑스식 문화교류의

달인이다.

프랑스에서는 날씨나 기분에 따라 집 근처의

단골카페를 골라가며 이용했다고 한다. 혼자만의

시간을 보내기도 하지만 기본적으로는 사람을

만나기 위한 곳이 카페. “주로 커피나 라떼를

주문하지만 일이 끝나고 친구와 수다를 떨려고

만났을 때는 와인을 마시죠.”

그녀는 화이트 와인과 함께 케이크 살레를

선택했다. “친구랑 식사하러 나가기 전에 집에서

살짝 마시고 나갈까 싶을 때 이걸 곁들이죠.”

작은 일에서도 뛰어난 센스를 발휘하는 그녀가

라이프 스타일을 말할 때 빼놓을 수 없는 것은?

“다양한 경험을 해보는 게 인생을 풍요롭게

해준다고 생각해요. 그런 경험과 그 때의 기분을

one rainy day before lunchtime,

we had a rendezvous with a nice

French lady at ELLE CAFE. Want-

ing to make the occasion a bit more spe-

cial, we made use of the café’s unique

VIP room.

The room for six to eight people, with

a mirrored wall, small tables and a round

sofa is Parisian in feel. It’s decorated with

French-ethnic-style cushions and other

delightful interior items that you can pur-

chase at the counter. Available by the hour,

it can be used for a meeting with some-

one special, a birthday party, or a busi-

ness meeting.

As soft sunlight creeping in through

the white interior of the café made us for-

get the dull weather, our guest appeared:

Louisa Babaci, the deputy-director of the

French Institute in Fukuoka. Louisa stud-

ied international relations and Japa-

nese at university in Paris and worked

for educational organizations and photo

agencies in international cities like Paris,

New York, and Tokyo. She was assigned

by the French foreign affairs to her cur-

rent position in 2006. She is in charge

of the language school, university co-

operation and works on various cultur-

al projects including cultural events, art

exhibitions, lectures, conferences, and

reception parties.

When she was in France, she had sev-

eral favorite cafés near her home and used

them in turn according to the weather, her

mood, and situation. In French culture, a

café is basically a place to meet some-

one but can also be used to read, rest and

unwind. “I usually order coffee or latte,

but when I meet my friends after work, I

choose wine.”

We ordered cakes salés along with a

glass of white wine. Cake salés means “salt

cake” in French and is more an appetizer

with an apéritif . The recipe differs season-

ally, regionally and from family to family.

“We have it with some drinks with friends

before we go out for dinner.”

The 24m-high Shiraito Waterfall

is a popular scenic spot that is

Hakata Traditional Craft ¬Center openedA new facility devoted to Fukuoka’s traditional

crafts opened in Kamikawabata-machi, Haka-

ta-ku on Apr. 7, 2011 in a two-storied wooden

building which previously served as a com-

munity center for 34 years. On the first floor

there is an exhibition space and a cafe. Oc-

casionally workshops and lectures are held.

On the second floor there are approximately

80 works on permanent display including

those of Kisaburo Ogawa (Hakata Ori), and

late Yoichi Kojima (Hakata doll). Other tra-

ditional local crafts such as Hakata-basami

Hakata Port International ¬Terminal renovated!Many aesthetic and functional improvements

were completed recently at the Hakata Port

International Terminal. A new escalator and

elevator were installed to help passengers

board the New Camellia ferry and the Beetle

and Kobee hydrofoils which link Fukuoka to

Busan. The interior received some modifica-

tions including the use of Hakata Ori (textile)

and Hakata-bei (walls made of earth and old

roof tiles) so visitors can obtain a feel for the

city’s history and culture. Figuring out how to

board buses and pay has been a challenge for

visitors. Now tourist and traffic information for

Fukuoka and Kyushu will be available through

newly installed digital signage systems.

a joint public and private organization estab-

lished in 2003 and consists of 17 municipali-

ties including Fukuoka City and the chamber

of commerce. It supports and facilitates the

on-location shooting of movies, dramas, and

television commercials. A new film Kiseki

(Miracle) directed by Hirokazu Koreeda will

be open on theater screens on Jun. 4 (Sat.)

in Kyushu. In this story children make a wish

for a “miracle” that is said to occur on the

day of the opening of Kyushu Shinkansen.

It was shot at Momochi Elementary School,

Gintencho (Zasshonokuma), Hakata Station,

and in Ohori and Maizuru Park. You will be able

to recognize many familiar sites through-

environment Cleanup ¬eventThe Love Earth Clean Up 2011 event will be

held on Jun. 12 (Sun.) from 9:00. It’s the 20th

anniversary for this popular event. Citizens,

companies and municipalities clean beaches,

rivers and parks together. About 36,000 vol-

unteers attended last year in Fukuoka City.

Venues include: Obaru Beach, Nakagawa

Riv. (Seiryu Park), Fukuhama Beach, Nishi

Park, Ohori and Maizuru Park, Momochi-

hama, Ikinomatsubara Beach, Futamigau-

ra, Nokonoshima, and others. The event has

spread to Busan, Korea! Reservations are not

required. Go directly to a venue with your

work gloves. The event is held in light rain

Camp at Mt. Abura Civic ¬forestThe Mt. Abura Civic Forest is located about

9km from the center of Fukuoka City. Mt.

Abura’s peak is 597 meters high and 70.7

hectares area features an athletic field, 15

bungalows, camping space for 25 tents. Res-

ervations for the summer season begin on

Jun. 1 and the season runs from Jul. 20 ~ Aug.

30. Additional fees are required for bunga-

lows and tents. Call or visit after 9:00, Jun.

1 to make reservations (Jun. 1: phone only).

Capacity per day is limited to around 200

so hurry! Campfires are possible with ad-
