Jumpstart Games

In 2014 there were 17 Jumpstart Games with over 8,300 children in

multi-sport, and sport-specific games.

In 2015, PSP partnered with Jumpstart Games, which took place in July

at CFB Borden.

Important to Know

91 per cent of Canadians believe

participation in sports teaches children

important life skills

– Health benefits;

– Team play and sportsmanship,

building confidence or self-esteem;

– Developing social skills and

friendships;

– Learning how to succeed and fail,

and

– Keeping children busy and out of

trouble.

33 per cent of children do not

participate in organized sport largely

due to cost

- The two major barriers to participation

are enrollment fees (61 per cent) and

equipment costs (52 per cent).

- Parents spend on average $953 per

child each year for their kids to play

organized sports

- 82 per cent know a child who cannot

participate in organized sport due to the

cost

Military Families, “Then and Now”

• Today’s families have been asked to do more than in the past, and

more often.

• Family demographics are evolving and societal norms and

expectations adversely affecting families.

• Dual career/income families are at an all time high.

• Non serving spouse assumes high level of personal and professional

sacrifice

• Families are subjected to far more financial instability.

• 80% of families now live off base and the communities where they live

influence family life differently than in the past.

Lifestyle Impact

Why?

Geographic relocation,

operational deployments

and the relentless

upheaval of military life

are the major causes of

disruption and strain for

military families,

triggering many of the

challenges they face.

• It is very difficult for non-serving CAF

spouses to find and sustain reasonable,

gainful, continuous employment.

• Many military families experience

difficulty accessing suitable and

affordable housing in healthy, cohesive

communities.

• Military families are challenged in

achieving both short-term and long-

term financial well-being.

CAF Commitment

We recognize the important role families play in enabling the operational effectiveness of the Canadian Armed Forces and we acknowledge the unique nature of military life.

We honour the inherent resilience of families and we pay tribute to the sacrifices of families made in support of Canada. We pledge to work in partnership with the families and the communities in which they live.

We commit to enhancing military life.
