the second volume of the series the work of Alighiero Boetti, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

this volume, looks at the crucial period when his work took the form of conceptual poetry. Alighiero Boetti loved experimenting with new materials. From 1971, he commissioned some Afghan embroiderers to work on his most famous series, entitled Mappe (Maps). this and other works executed in the ‘seventies highlight some of the fundamental concepts underlying his work: multiplicity, diversity and repetition.

It was between 1972, the year in which he decided to insert an ‘e’ between his name and surname to draw attention to the dual nature of his identity, and 1979, that Boetti created his most important works.

the complete series will take the form of 4 volumes, curated by jean-christophe Ammann, in conjunction with the Alighiero Boetti Archive. Boetti is in the process of winning even greater international acclaim, thanks to a travelling retrospective exhibition of his work entitled Alighiero Boetti: Game Plan.

An initiative with the aim of promoting Italian artists living in Berlin, offering them the chance to pit themselves against the lively international art scene.

For the first time, the historic seat of the Italian embassy opens its doors to young Italian artists, offering them an institutional showcase and transforming itself into a contemporary art venue. All this combined with the unique characteristics of Berlin which, in recent years, has attracted a large number of Italian artists of various ‘persuasions’ searching for new modes of expression and who are receiving large-scale approval from public and critics alike.

Based on their success, the curators of the project – Alessandra Pace and Marina corbello – have put together a publication which illustrates this original cultural experience. so not just an exhibition catalogue, but a comprehensive presentation of the unprecedented dialogue that has grown up between the often provocative forms of contemporary art and the classical structure of the building. the book documents the presence of about 35 artists, some of whom are well established on the Italian market, such as Patrick tuttofuoco, Vedovamazzei and Armin linke.

A selection of 25 videos from François Pinault’s personal collection.

the catalogue is part of a series of publications by Palazzo Grassi, conceived with the idea of creating unpublished interviews between authors/curators and the artists who participate in these exhibitions: couples like Quintin/Mircea cantor, AlexandrKazerouni/Abdulnasser Gharem and nida Ghouse/Hassan Khan.Among the works presented, we find artists who have always been appreciated by the great collector, like Adel Abdessemed, caroline Bourgeois, Bill Viola and Bruce nauman. More recent discoveries are also included (especially non-Western artists) in a continuous endeavor to “multiply perspectives on the collection, compare it with different reference-points, explore its least-known, most unexpected and, at first sight, most contradictory repercussions”.

Four years after the artist’s death, the exhibition of sol leWitt’s unpublished wall drawings at the Reggia di caserta and the monograph that accompanies it pay tribute to an artist of international acclaim who spent a great deal of time in Italy over the years, leaving some extraordinary testimonials.

Within leWitt’s vast output, which encompassed painting, sculpture, drawings and architecture, the book focuses on his wall drawings, the murals made by the artist and his assistants in Italy.Meticulous research conducted in museums, indoor and outdoor public places, galleries and private homes has resulted in an extraordinary and surprising number of more than 200 works, from the first ones painted in 1969 on the walls of the Attico gallery in Rome to the last ones executed in 2010. straight lines, curves, stripes, flat geometric figures, pyramids, zigzags, braids, loops and inlay-work, black and white or brightly-coloured, all of them bring dynamism to and enliven anonymous buildings, princely palaces, churches and rural chapels. the santissima Madonna delle Grazie near la Morra d’Alba in Piedmont, now known as the church of Barolo, is a good example.the book will contain: an introduction by Adachiara Zevi, curator of the exhibition and the book that accompanies it; the last interview given by the artist to the curator, hitherto unpublished; the complete documentation surrounding the wall drawings executed by leWitt in Italy; biographical and bibliographical references.

the catalogue contains a series of in-depth scientific contributions about the significance and role played by Italy in le corbusier’s artistic education and architectural concept. It goes through the changing points-of-view from which the artist – a painter, architect and sculptor – looks at Italian culture throughout his life, from his early life until his death

Italy played an important role in the personal and professional development of the greatest architect of the 20th century. Between 1907 and 1921, Italy is mainly an object of study for the young jeanneret in his educational travels while, from the early 1920’s, he begins to make personal contact with exponents of contemporary Italian culture, especially in the artistic and literary field. From 1926 onwards, Italian Rationalist architects begin to make contact with le corbusier and establish close relationships with him throughout the 1930’s, especially in Milan, Rome and Venice. After WWII, contact is eagerly re-established. le corbusier goes back to Italy various times. He is invited to the seventh ciam (International congress of Modernist Architecture) meeting in Bergamo in 1949, to Milan by the triennale to participate in the international De Divina Proportione conference, to the International Artists’ conference in Venice, to the ciam summer-school in turin and, finally, to Florence where, in 1963, the first great Italian exhibition of le corbusier’s work takes place at Palazzo strozzi. In the early 1960’s, professional commitments are added to his artistic ones, with commissions for designs for the olivetti factory in Rho, and the hospital in Venice. the book is magnificently illustrated, thanks partly to the le corbusier Foundation and its wonderfully rich iconographic archive.

serge lutens is an undisputed protagonist in the international scenario of the world’s most exclusive perfumes, an alchemist of dreams and a poet of fragrance.

one of the world’s most famous stylists and photographers, and perfume creator par excéllence, lutens was the creative genius behind the cosmetics line of christian Dior.

Born in lille, he moved to Paris, where he was hired by Vogue to create make-up and hair-styles. this is how he came to meet leading photographers like Richard Avedon and Irving Penn. In 1967, christian Dior commissioned lutens to create a new line of cosmetics, which Vogue America was to describe as ‘revolutionary’. His years working for Dior, between 1967 and 1977, are the focus of this book, which presents the extraordinary hitherto unpublished material from the advertising campaign he created to launch his company’s new line of make-up.

In 1980, lutens was recruited by shiseido to raise the profile of the japanese company worldwide. His advertising campaigns earned him two lions d’or at the cannes film festival in the section devoted to shorts for advertising. He also created a new fragrance for shiseido, nombre noir, for which he received another lion d’or in 1990 at the International Art Film Festival, sponsored by unesco. In 2000, he launched his own brand of fragrances “Parfums-Beauté serge lutens”. From 2001 to 2004, he received the FiFi Award (from the British Fragrance Foundation). In 2007, the French government honored him with the title of commandeur dell’ordre des Arts et des lettres (commander of the order of Arts and letters), an event which, yet again, confirmed lutens’ unrivalled talent in the world of beauty.

the book will be accompanied by a series of photographic exhibitions, to be staged in Paris, Berlin and Brussels, which will present the photographs contained in this book to the public.

the renewed interest of contemporary architectural culture in rational architecture is highlighted by the increasing number of publications analyzing this expressive phenomenon. Max Dudler’s work is both a symbol and a renewal of this unusual way of interpreting architecture in modern cities. An important cultural figure in Berlin, where he lives and works, he collaborates not only with studios in Berlin but also in Frankfurt-am-Main and Zurich. In addition to his professional work, he has a busy teaching schedule at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. the book examines his original approach to composition, developed over more than 30 years of intensive activity, by publishing more than 500 of his projects, many of which are shown here for the first time. the architect’s daily creative grind, tackled in an extremely consistent way and with great inventive freedom, is shown through original drawings and sketches, collected here for the first time in a single volume for easy consultation. the book comes with a complete list of works and a bibliography. Furthermore, the book contains critical articles by Francesco Dal co, Werner oechslin, Vittorio Magnago lampugnani, Annalisa trentin and Francesco saverio Fera.

architetti moderni

An extended, updated version of the monograph published in 2003 by electaarchitettura about the work of the Portuguese architect

the book opens with a transcription of a conversation between souto de Mura, Álvaro siza and Fernando tavora, the first two being pupils of the latter, all three of whom are linked by a unique fellowship underlying their design experience, nourished by the same cultural substratum, but with different results. After this, there are essays by leoni and esposito, followed by the designs and buildings, arranged in chapters with different themes.each chapter is introduced by writings by the Portuguese architect, with the aim of illustrating the content. these texts, supported by historical and critical contributions, make it possible to appreciate the poetic and ideological motivations lying behind the work of the subject of the book. the final chapter focuses on the works completed by the architect since 2003, year of the first publication of the book, up to the present day. some of the most interesting projects are the two single-family villas at Ponte de lima, the tower for the Burgo commercial building in Boavista, the contemporary Art center at Bragança, the casa del cinema Manoel de oliveira in Porto, the city stadium at Braga, the new metro stations in Porto, the Paula Rego Museum at cascais, and the Kortrijk crematorium in Belgium.the book has a complete register of works, a biography and a bibliography and is illustrated by photographs taken specially for the publication by Alessandra chemollo and Fulvio orsenigo. the book examines every facet of the personality of this protagonist of contemporary architecture and offers considerable scope for understanding the reasons behind the success which Portuguese design culture has enjoyed in recent years.

architetti moderni

this volume systematically catalogues the whole architectural production of juan navarro Baldeweg (santander, 1939), one of the leading lights of spanish contemporary architecture. Painter and architect, navarro Baldeweg alternates his work within a framework of formal research enlivened by unitary project tension. He approaches his projects with gentle determination and with meticulous care in choosing different materials from a variety of sources, whether he is creating a painting, an installation or a construction. As juan josé lahuerta and Angel González García explain in their essays which introduce the monography, the artistic growth of this spanish architect is informed by a personal visual culture. And it is this culture which is the common denominator running like a thread through all his projects, spanning different creative forms that highlight each ones specific nature, such as the contrast between the strong palette of his paintings and the soft, natural tones of his architecture. the works presented span navarro Baldeweg’s whole career from his first projects realised towards the end of the seventies to today. More recent works include: the cave di Altamira museum and study centre in cantabria (2000), the Pompeu Fabra university in Barcelona (2008), the canal theatre in Madrid (2008), the Amersfoort Kunsthalle in the netherlands (2009).

storia dell’architettura italiana

the book continues the studies collected in the previous publication curated by the distinguished German archaeologists Paul Zanker and Henner von Hesberg about the great monuments of Roman architecture.the new title documents the development, history and transformation of ancient Roman cities in Italy. the city of Rome and the colonies founded by Rome are in a category of their own. From the 7th century Bc onwards, a long process had led to the growth of Rome, which then became capital of an empire that extended the length and breadth of the Mediterranean. the remains of archaic buildings lay next to planned roads with houses several storeys high, ancient temples which had been restored several times found themselves next to Hellenistic temple complexes and magnificent Imperial fora.on the other hand, the cities Rome founded looked completely different from the original. often they lay beside or on important roads which led directly to the main temple, the capitolium, and the forum. the street-plans for every city were based on an orthogonal grid system. From the late 1st century Bc, these cities developed beyond the original layout in order to provide sufficient space for splendid buildings like theatres, amphitheatres, new residential areas and, last but not least, public baths.

documenti di architettura

From the outset, the aim of the Documenting Architecture series has been to document the architectural scenario in japan. so far, it has published special editions about young architects shuhei endo (1960), satoshi okada (1962), Kazuyo sejima (1956) and Ryue nishizawa (1966), Kengo Kuma (1954), Waro Kishi (1950), and master architects tadao Ando (1941) and Arata Isozaki (1931). now a new book in the series looks at the much-discussed and controversial work of shin takamatsu (1948).Having graduated as an architect from Kyoto university in 1971, he began his career in the second half of the ‘seventies, designing small single-family houses. later he moved on to plan commercial buildings, a sphere where he achieved immediate success. the aggressive originality of takamatsu’s work enabled him to impose his mark on the chaotic and exciting japanese urban landscape, and offer his patrons strong, catalyzing images. During the second half of the ‘eighties, takamatsu’s buildings became ever-more fragmented, eccentric and paradoxical. His buildings resembled giant robots, and their hi-tech architectural features resulted in amazing structures where the constructive elements are hard to discern. During the ‘nineties, takamatsu’s untiring capacity for expression underwent a decisive change: now his creations were based on composition involving the spectacular use of pure geometric shapes, enabling him to export his works outside japan. the book, introduced by the critical essays of Masaru Kawatoko and Waro Kishi, describes takamatsu’s most significant works in a career spanning more than 40 years.

food novel

“‘La Rossumata’ was one of the many consolatory treats that my grandmother used to make when she was in a good mood. She used to make it by beating an egg with sugar until it became a sort of light, frothy foam, after which she would turn it a beautiful plummy-red by adding half a glass of Barbera Cascina Castlèt wine.” (excerpt from: Il Diavolo e la Rossumata)

la Rossumata is one of the many recipes that features in sveva casati Modignani’s new book, her first entirely autobiographical work, in which the author reveals things about herself for the first time.

It’s 1943. Milan is under the Allied bombs. near Via Padova, a shy little girl who is incredibly curious, is embarking on her apprenticeship for life. Her name is sveva and she’s five years old.

this is how ‘Il Diavolo e la Rossumata’ begins. It’s an autobiographical story in which the author harks back to the period of the second World War, which she spent between the family home in Milan and a farm surrounded by rice-fields at trezzano sul naviglio.

Food is the common thread that accompanies the 13 episodes of the book. A story in which the memories and emotions, tastes and recipes all intermingle, where each event and anecdote is associated with a particular dish or a family meal. these are years haunted by hunger, the black market and food substitutes. But in the case of little sveva, there is no lack of food because, every day, the women in the family go to great efforts to cook imaginative dishes and put them on the table.

the recipes for ‘war-time’ dishes mentioned in the story, found at the end of the book, are enhanced with elaborate comments, some of which are very personal, making them into an entertaining, fascinating extension of the story.the accurate descriptions of people, tastes and landscapes take us back to a world, not so very far away, which we find it increasingly hard to remember.

health food

nicola sorrentino, regarded as one of Italy’s foremost nutritionists, reveals his recipes for losing weight and, for the first time, provides helpful suggestions about how to ensure a healthy, well-balanced diet. Finally, we can learn the truth about what constitutes a really healthy diet, and why high-protein diets endanger our health. In this new book, sorrentino, with his 20 years of experience in the nutrition sector, explains the aims of his healthy diet: keeping slim, preventing the onset of illness and eating with relish. the book contains a 30-day-long program, giving explanations about all the meals to be consumed during each day and a new recipe to be cooked every day. sorrentino strongly supports the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in vitamins, carbohydrates and fiber, and demands that the ‘patient’ should learn to cook in a balanced way with a diet based on low-calorie food. In other words, a form of food education in its own right, the contrary of do-it-yourself diets. the author has been invited several times to appear on television with his French colleague Pierre Dukan. sorrentino’s vision is diametrically opposite to that of Dukan, and has led him to be perceived by the public as a champion of the diet which keeps people healthy.

food novel

Fabio Picchi, one of Italy’s best-known chefs and gourmets, makes a return to the bookshops with a new story celebrating the “flavor of tuscan cuisine” and vindicating the Italian influence which has lain hidden in many French dishes since the time of napoleon Bonaparte.

History, secrets, enthusiasm and taste: these are the magic ingredients in Igor Rogi’s latest adventure.

During a trip to the charming island of elba in the tuscan archipelago, the protagonist of the story, chef Igor Rogi, begins to follow the trail of an old and very mysterious recipe book.

A recipe-book conceived to satisfy the palate of a great emperor: napoleon Bonaparte. Where do the recipes come from? Who invented them? there are many questions to which Igor Rogi tries to find answers. A book with a swift-moving, absorbing literary style, which starts with traditional tuscan food and recipes, and goes on to explore myths and legends, historical facts and fiction, re-creating the famous emperor’s period of exile, and describing his impassioned affair with Maria Walewska and his deepest secrets. through this somewhat provocative story, the great tuscan chef vindicates the utterly Italian origins of many recipes that have long been regarded as French, one of them being ratatouille. In fact, ratatouille is not a Provençale dish: it comes from gurguglione, a very flavorsome vegetarian dish from the cuisine of elba.
