This Year there will only be one race on Sunday 26th July 2015 but it will start and finish in Benwick. The Circuit of the Fens (aka Benwick Ker-messe) starts at 12pm and finishes at 3pm at the Five Alls. The 8 laps of a 9.5 mile circuit make the race a total of 76 miles. The circuit will be: Benwick High Street -> Doddington Road -> Dykemoor Drove -> Doddington Road -> Forty Foot Bank -> Ibberson’s Drove -> Ramsey Road -> Benwick High Street.

No roads will be closed but there will be rolling road closures as the race goes through the village. This may cause delays of approximately ten minutes per lap so please allow plenty of time if you need to travel in or out of the village on the day.

There will be a hog roast and burgers outside the Five Alls.

Children’s Painting Competition and possible Photo Competition please check Ben Wick Facebook page nearer the time for further info.

Benwick in Bloom has been busy the last few weeks, planting up our tubs, weeding the play park borders and Skeifs row, keeping our promise to put Benwick into Bloom.

As you may have already noticed our red, white and blue theme this year also includes bicycle wheels. This to combine and promote the forthcoming Bicycle Race Day, also the World War II commemoration.

We have also hung scarecrows outside The Five Alls to enter into the fun of the scarecrow competition, we will also be displaying scarecrows within our displays.

Do you have any spare time? Volunteers are needed to help raise funds for Doddington Community Hospital. The Benwick and Chat-teris Friends of Doddington Hospital group have recently funded an LED headlight and headband to support the Ear Nose and Throat doctors, and also a book case to display patient and support information in the main entrance.

It doesn’t take up much time, and you would be helping to raise funds for a vital community service.

Our May Birthday party was a huge success. Fifty five members and friends sat down to a ploughman’s supper followed by a choice of dessert. The tables were laid with the forget-me-not coloured table cloths which were purchased some time ago with the money donated by the family of the late Hilda Green from her funeral collection. After supper Sean Moyses entertained us with his banjo playing, singing and a few jokes – a most enjoyable evening. At the meeting on 4th June we made our own entertainment with a Beetle Drive, which caused a great deal of laughter. Prize winners were Joyce Ragosa and June Boon.

We were down in numbers for the outing to Downtown, Grantham but still 15 people enjoyed the day out.The July meeting was on Thursday, 2nd when Margaret Sparrow talked to us about “Memory Boxes”. The competition.

At the 6th August meeting we will be having Cheese and Wine with a Quiz and the competition any item beginning with the letter H.

FORGET-ME-NOTSThe Harvest Festival will be on 3rd September.

We have two outings arranged for July. On Friday, 3rd a Variety Show at The Brook, Soham departing Benwick at 1.45pm. and a Mystery Tour on the afternoon of 15th July departing Benwick at 2 pm. Interested in any of the activities and 55 or over, male or female you are very welcome – come and join us. The annual membership is just £6. Please call Janet 01354 677228 or you can just turn up. The meetings are held at 6.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month. •

I had a vague idea that it was a University for older people but didn’t really know any more than that. Then I started looking around for things to do during the day now I am no longer working.

I had a hunt around on the internet and discovered that the University of the Third Age (U3A) movement is actually a network of organisations throughout the country for people no longer in full time employment providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. There is no age limit and both men and women are welcome. There are no exams and no qualifications to be gained just enjoyment, learning and lots of laughter.

All groups draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the members. Between them U3As nationally offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects such as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking.

TRY THE U3A?by Sheila Gilbert-Hill

Ramsey & District U3A has a monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 2pm when we have a guest speaker but they also have around 22 interest groups covering things as diverse as card making, theatre trips, philosophy and many many more.

New groups are being formed all the time so I bet there is a group you would be interested in and if not why not get in touch anyway, you never know your interest may spark another new group.

Have a look at our website www.u3asites.org.uk/ramsey and/or give me a call on 01354 677320. I would be delighted to tell you all about us. •

In June we gave the Scouts a challenge. They were to help me celebrate my birthday by helping me assess the two fish & chip shops Chatteris to see which was the best. But there was a catch! First they had to navigate themselves along a 1 hour hike, on an unknown route, across country leading back to the shops.

They managed that last part very well indeed. The difficult bit came when trying to decide which chip shop was the best. When comparing the whole meal, the votes for both Rumbles and Petrou Brothers were equal.

I was not satisfied with that as an outcome, so we asked the scouts to say who supplied the best fish and who the best chips. Overwhelm-ingly the vote went – best fish from Petrou Brothers, and the best chips from Rumbles (HONEST – ask the scouts!). And, no, the food was not free. To keep the competition clear and above board, I insisted on paying for it.

At the beginning of June we took the

SCOUT GROUP NEWS

scouts for a horse riding lesson at Partridge Farm Equestrian Centre in Whittlesey. They all had a great time riding round the training ring, having a go at grooming the horses, and even a short hack along a bridleway.

The only problem was, at the end, I had several young “ladies” whining at me to put one of the horses in my car to bring it home for them. I was driving a Ford Focus and it was one of the bigger horses! The “ladies” thought it was most unreasonable for me to decline the request.

We are planning an short expedition for the Scouts in July, and they are in training for it. They will hike from just north of the village to the District Scout campsite in March. There they will have to pitch their tents, cook all their meals, undertake several challenges, strike camp and hike back.

In June the Scouts took part in a 24 hour non-stop activity event at

Page 17: July/August 2015 Benwick Bugle

17www.benwickbugle.co.uk

Mepal Outdoor Centre, along with scouts from all over Cambridgeshire.

Activities included rock climbing, canoeing, air rifles, archery, high ropes, zip wire, laser paintball, catapults, bouncy castles, films, campfire cooking, slack line walking, canoeing, beach party, pillowfights and more.

They nearly all made it through the 24 hours. Parents reported that they all slept very well afterwards! My wife and Edward’s wife said the only sound they got out of us was “gentle” snoring.

The Cubs have been working on their cycling badge and it looks as though most of them will pass the test at the end.

A weekend away at Kingswood has been arranged for the first weekend of the October half-term holiday. This will be a joint event with 2nd March Cubs, so there will be lots of activities to tire them out and get them muddy, and lots of new friends to make.In May the Cubs had an evening out at Fossils Galore in March.

We are having one more push to get the Beaver Colony up and running again. In September there will be a set of taster sessions for Beaver age (6-8) children to come along to with

their parents. More details will come out nearer the time. I will put them up on the various village Facebook pages.

Because of personal circumstances, I will be giving up organising the RBL Poppy Appeal collection.

Before I notify the RBL, is there anyone who wants to take this on? I have a considerable stock of poppies, wreaths, etc. I feel certain that I can still get the Scouts to help with the door-to-door collection.

Please get in touch if interested. It would be good if a handover can be made soon to allow a successor to get this organised for November.

Interested? Please email me at [email protected] or call 07857 002612. •

I was born down Benwick Road, Ramsey,on 30th May 1932 the youngest of eight children. At two weeks old I scaled one and a half pounds with my clothes on. I had five brothers and two sisters. We moved into Benwick about 1940 when my father took on The White Hart public house. There were seven pubs in Benwick High Street at that time.

There were five general shops run by Mrs. N. Band, Miss C. Shaw, Mr. P. Coulson, Mr. F. Smith and Miss I. Foster. Mr. Percy Males was the cobbler, Mr. Harry Clapham, the butcher. Mr. J. W. Moore was the baker assisted by Mr. Alf Howlett, Mr. Ruse was the barber, Mr. W. Buck the fishmonger. George and Cyril Bullamore were the coal merchants and Barclays Bank from Ramsey came to Benwick on Thursdays.

Sport was well provided for there were two bowling greens, one at The Boot and Slipper and one at The White Hart, a football club, fishing club, tennis club, cricket club and a badminton club. There was an Army Cadet Force run by Mr. Wilf Sutton

DOWN MEMORY LANE

and Nursing Cadets run by Mrs. Lil Clifton.

We had a Home Guard, Fire Service, ARP a Policeman, Special Constables and a Royal Observer Corps. After The White Hart closed the bowling green was moved to The Five Alls but that green is also finished due to lack of support.

There were two garages. Ted Stokes ran one and Fred Stokes the other. Later Trevor Stevenson had the one run by Fred Stokes and then Ivor Sutton bought it. During Mr. Stevenson’s time a taxi service operated.

Now the bucher’s shop was next door to The Boot and Slipper and the Army Cadet Hall was next to that. Dances and Whist Drives were held in the Cadet Hall and also in the School. We also had film shows in the Cadet Hall once a week.

I forgot to say one church which ->

should never have been pulled down and two chapels. We had a railway station in Benwick which brought in the coal for the coal merchants and seed potatoes for the farmers and also took out the produce – potatoes, sugar beet and corn. That closed in 1964.

When we went to school we knew everyone in the school, all the children and the Headmaster was Mr. B. W. Seals, the teachers were Mrs. Seals and Miss Lizzie Foster. Growing up we also knew everyone and it was Sir or Mister when we spoke to them. If you misbehaved and the local policeman caught you it was a kick up the backside or a clip around the ear and if you went home and told your mother or father you got another one. The cane at school or a clip didn’t hurt anyone.

Mr. Arthur Shepperson used a pony and wagon to fetch all the children from the fens to school and take them back home again.

It was nothing to see someone walk a pig up the street to the butchers to be slaughtered, and the boys would go to get the pig’s bladder to blow up and use as a football.

The fair would come to Benwick three days a year on 17th, 18th and

19th July. It would take most of the top of the street and The White Hart and Boot and Slipper yards would be full. After the war we had par-ties in the street, bonfires, dancing and singing for VE and VJ nights. The Home Guard organised a children’s sports day once a year and provided a tea party at the end of the day.

Mr. Vic Stevens was the roadman and had a dustcart. When he died Mr. A. Savage did it. Mr. Whittome had a threshing tackle business and as boys we would follow it around the farms and smallholdings rat catching. We would then take the rat’s tails to Mr. FC. Bedford and get a half penny each for them.

Benwick was Benwick and if anyone wanted anything done we got together and did it! •

Our May meeting was at March museum. The group were met by a number of friends of the museum and they were very informative about the various exhibits.

They had looked through their ar-chives and prepared a collection of Benwick photos. After the visit a number of members stopped off for refreshment at The Three Tuns in Doddington.

On June 15th Rosemary Taylor from High Street gave an enjoyable talk and demonstration on reflexology. This was followed by our now annual strawberry feast, where we sampled a variety of desserts provided by members. (I skipped tea so that I had room to partake of many of these. They were very moreish!)

Our next two meetings will be visits out of the village. On 20th July we are going to Pidley for ten pin bowling and a bar meal. (Yes, we’ll be eating again!)

Food features again on 17th August when we head to The Orchard Tea

Room and Farm Shop in Redmoor Lane Wisbech. Here we are looking around the orchard before listening to a talk about apple varieties and how the orchard has been established.

In September we’ll be back in the Village Hall for our meeting with a talk from Linda Jones the Senior Oncology Nurse at Addenbrookes. She is coming to us to speak about breast cancer and the research which is being carried out. Anyone is welcome to come along to hear her (visitor cost £3.00). •

NEWS FROM OUR MP

by Steven Barclay

First of all I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and gave me the privilege of being able to serve as this area’s MP for a second term.

Now the work begins again. As you are probably aware I have campaigned on a number of issues over the past five years and I’m determined to continue with those priorities.

Priorities like the re-opening of Wisbech rail-link. We have made huge progress on this in the past few years and I’m confident the line will re-open. But we need to maintain pressure to ensure that happens as soon as possible and I will continue to meet with the relevant ministers and government agencies to keep the momentum going.

Dualling of the A47 is another key priority but early reports indicate the business case is currently not good enough for this scheme to progress. I will continue to do what I can to see this important road upgraded.

I will be continuing my “Treat me

Local” campaign so people can receive the treatment they need without having to endure long journeys to major hospitals. We have made some progress including the re-opening of bereavement counselling in Fenland and blood testing machines in GP surgeries, a single point of contact for dementia has also recently been achieved

I will continue to campaign for more action against fly-tippers and hopefully now Fenland District Council has covert cameras this will help in the fight to stop illegal dumping in our countryside.

Opening up the countryside alongside waterways is a passion of mine because it is such an untapped resources, including cycle routes. The recent opening of the new stretch of cycleway between Witcham Toll and Wentworth is fantastic and hopefully will be the first of many such routes created across our area.
