  • This exciting new product has been proven with results and the demand for repeat orders has been tremendous. In fact, manyof the major steer and heifer show winners from the past month feed Fresh & Feminine, the secret to eye appealing show cat-tle! Feminine shape and freshness throughout the front end of your show animal spells ultimate success or failure in the show ringtoday.

This is how this feed supplement works the superior science of Fresh & Feminine features a combination of strategic vita-mins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and a high concentration of by-pass protein sources. This chemistry boosts metabolic fatburning in the body that targets spe- cific areas of the body to reduce fat content, most notably in the neck and brisket area. Theanimal has a more feminine, attractive physique and even moves better. This helps to offset the results seen from aggressive, highenergy show cattle diets.

All natural and fertility safe for open heifers, bred heifers, steers and bulls. Simply top dress 6 oz. per head per day of this pel-leted supplement on your current ration until desired freshness has been achieved.

winning Grand Champion at the Colorado State Fair would be the most memorable part of raising steers, but it was actually the time spent at home with the calves I miss the most. I have many good memories with my family getting our animals read for the show.

We have had the opportunity to cover the Colorado, Nebraska and Illinois State Fairs the past few years. I am really excited to travel to Des Moines and cover the Iowa State Fair this August! It is definitely one show that I have always wanted to see! Be sure to look for us at the show.

This issue is definitely one of my favorites. Weve included show coverage from junior nationals, a sale directory that organizes sales, highlighted top exhibitors and included ads from people across the country! If you havent already, be sure to download our free Showtimes App and use our new Pasture Sales feature! I hope you enjoy the July/August 2015 State Fair Edition of The Showtimes!

    Good luck at the shows!

    Brian J. ReidOwner/Editor

T he State Fair Edition is always the one issue we look forward to every year. I believe it is the issue that all of our readers look forward to as well. This years issue might be our best yet!

At 480 pages it becomes our biggest issue to date, and is filled with show results, great articles and two new hall of fame members.

Growing up, the Colorado State Fair was always the one show I looked forward to more than any other. There was something about raising steers for the state fair. From the time we would start putting them in the cooler in April, to when we pulled into Pueblo, it was about getting our steers to look their best on show day in August. I always enjoyed walking to our barn on a hot 100 degree day, and opening the cool room door. The fans and cooler would be humming. There is nothing quite like a good fat steer, with perfect hair before they are clipped. It was always peaceful working cattle in the summer. We would spend every night down at the barn working our livestock. Sometimes, we wouldnt come up from the barn until around midnight. You would think that

ITS TIME FOR THE STATE FAIRS!

    news

North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) officials announced that the Beef Cattle Show Division is scheduled for November 14-20. The rotating show lineup that began last year, along with the staggered arrival and release schedule continues. This year 19 different breeds will be represented, and 12 of the shows carry a national designation. The complete show schedule can be found on the NAILE website at livestockexpo.org.

Feeder Calf Show ExpandedThe NAILE Single Steer and Single Heifer Shows will now allow individual entries without the requirement that the animal be a part of a Pen-of-Three to qualify to show. Show officials expect this change to lead to increased numbers and quality in this single competition. The minimum weight for feeder steers has increased from 750 lbs. to 800 lbs. The Feeder Calf and Pen Heifer Shows are scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 14 and will be followed by the Sale.

Sale Cattle Rule ChangeOne Beef Cattle Division rule change concerns all sale cattle. Starting this year, sale animals must have premise Electronic Identification (EID) tags.

Junior ShowsThe junior shows begin on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the Kentucky Exposition Centers Broadbent Arena. On Sunday, junior shows are scheduled in both Broadbent Arena and Freedom Hall. Since 2007 winners from purebred and percentage Junior Heifer Shows compete for the Supreme Champion honor and a $2,500 prize. In addition, Main Trailer Sales of Seymour, Indiana will award the winner with a free one-year trailer lease.

STEERS WILL NO LONGER BE MOUTHEDThe Junior Steer Show takes place on Sunday, Nov. 15. One rule change for the show is that steers will no longer be mouthed. The four NAILE junior market

shows, including the Junior Steer Show, are sponsored by Farm Credit Mid America. Grand and Reserve Champion Steers are auctioned at the NAILE Sale of Champions held on Nov. 19 at 7:00 pm. The Sale is preceded by a reception starting at 6:00 pm, and everyone is invited to attend.

All Beef Cattle Division Shows will again be video streamed live on the NAILE website. Video archives of the 2014 are still available on the NAILEs You Tube channel.

Entry InformationCatalogs containing show information and rules are available for download on the NAILE website at www.livestockexpo.org. Printed catalogs and entry forms are automatically mailed to those who have participated in the NAILE the past two years. Catalogs are free, and anyone wishing to receive one should contact the NAILE offices at P.O. Box 36367, Louisville, KY 40233-6367, by fax at 502-367-5299, or by e-mail at [email protected].

Entry deadline beef cattle shows is October 1. Exhibitors may submit entries by mail at any time and on the website beginning September 1.

The 42nd Annual NAILE is produced by the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky under the direction of the Kentucky State Fair Board. During the Expos run November 3 through 20, the facilitys entire 1,200,000 square feet of climate-controlled exhibit space is used. More than 220,000 visitors and exhibitors attend the event annually.

For updates on the swine, sheep and goat shows from the 2015 North American International Livestock Exposion, please visit livestockexpo.org.

The Showtimes Magazine will be covering the show again this fall! Look for more information in future issues of The Showtimes Magazine! Full color show results will be printed in our January/February 2016 Stock Show Edition!

    TIMES

The Showtimes is excited to really show what our Showtimes App can do this summer and fall! In addition to the capabilities of reading our online issue, watching videos and staying updated with the latest show news, our app is now updated to make finding the next great calf that much easier! The Showtimes App now features every pasture sale that is advertised in the July/August issue right

on your phone under Pasture Sales! Whether you want to view only pasture sales in Iowa, or view every pasture sale across the country, you can! In addition, each pasture sale is listed on our map with a pin to show you where they are located!

Earlier this year we wanted to take our advertising to the next level. We were looking for a way to really provide our State Fair advertisers with the best of both worlds... print and technology. Each advertiser in this issue was offered a free listing on our Showtimes App (Valued at $100). In the past year thousands of people have downloaded our app, with the number of downloads growing after each show! Now anyone with our free app can not only view our online version of the July/August issue, they can also see the exact location of every sale! All you have to do is open our app and click Pasture Sales. From there, you can click on any state to view sales only in a certain state such as Iowa or Nebraska. If you are interested in sales in different states, just select all at the top and view every sale across the country! Not only will the advertisers in the state you select be listed in alphabetical order, we also give you the option to view them on our map! The great part about the map view is you see the many different sales in the area you are

traveling through and where you could go next. One of the most powerful features is you can zoom out to see the entire country, state or area, as well as zoom in all the way to view nearby small towns and county roads. The closer you zoom in, the more roads that appear. If you see a pin on your map that is near by, you can click on it to see whos sale it is and learn more about it. Once you click on a sale you will be taken to a page on our app with more information including the sale name, description, address, phone number, sale date and time it closes as well as a link to their website! If you click on their phone number, it lets you call them. If you click on their website, it goes right to their website. If you click their address, it will take you right to google maps where you can get directions right to their sale!

Our advertisers that selected the premier options, really take it to the next level. Not only will people with our app receive a Push Notification of their sale, they will also take advantage of our Geo-Targeted Push Notifications. When you are driving through an area, such as West Central Iowa near Dennison for example, you will receive a Geo-Targeted Push Notification of a sale nearby. All you have to do to activate a push notification from an advertiser is drive inside a 100 mile radious of their sale! This new technology is really the first of its kind and will make traveling to pasture sales that much easier!

Finally, when you are out on the road traveling from sale to sale, be sure to take advantage of the many other features on our app. Select Restaurnts on our app to view over 60 great places to eat across the country while on your trip. You can also view our online issue of The Showtimes to view each advertisers ad and the latest show results. Plus, you can watch Videos of the latest shows, view show News, write on our Fan Wall, take our latest Poll and learn more about the Owners! The Showtimes continues to lead the livestock show industry in new ideas. Thanks for everyones continued support and making the magazine what it is today! We hope you enjoy our new Pasture Sales feature on our app as you are out looking for your next great one!

Looking at the grand scheme of the show cattle industry our program is quite young. We have the honor of writing this article not to expound on the success we have had, but to explicate our journey and the lessons learned along the way. Honestly, its quite humbling to recollect. • THE BOYS PERSPECTIVE Our childhood revolved around life on the farm and helping dad in whatever way we could. Whether it was riding in the tractor, sorting cattle, loading hogs, or processing calves, we were involved in nearly every aspect of the operation. We were probably more of a hindrance

than a help, but we were thankful to be exposed at a young age to the xs and os of raising livestock and farming.

When beginning 4-H, we chose a different

approach than most families. Our goal was to build a successful cow herd not win shows. Any wins were welcome, but we purposefully picked females that we believed would mature into successful, high-producing, breeding females. In the early years of our 4-h careers we worked with several traders who were instrumental in teaching us daily hair care, clipping, and fitting. However, we would all pinpoint the time we began doing our own

thing and buying cattle directly out of pastures as a turning point. We began taking trips to Iowa and the Dakotas each year in search of our future show heifers and cows. This was later recognized as a self-taught course in club calf industry 101. The memorable times spent on the road bonded us as a family, as brothers, and as cattlemen. On the road we discussed pedigrees, bulls, and calves we had seen as well as management practices and herd promotion techniques we observed that could be implemented into our own operation. In each pasture entered, we would allot time to look at each calf whether steer or heifer, good or bad. We took notes, compared, and discussed what we had seen; the flaws, the attributes, and the feeding potential. This was our way of challenging and improving our evaluation skills. We would follow some of our favorite calves from the fall throughout the following show season to analyze our predictions. Our experiences began to pay off in our herd as higher quality calves were born and more predictable, consistent genetics evident. Due to changes on our farm, we downsized the commercial herd to a small number of our best A.I. cows and leading donors. Through this we learned the importance of being efficient herd managers. We never blanket bred anything. Each cow was evaluated on the basis of breeding qualities. When you had only 30-40 cows

OUR STORYMike Streitmatter grew up on a farm in Rensselaer, Indiana, raising commercial cattle, grain farming, and finishing hogs. Ever since he was old enough to walk, agriculture was his way of life. After graduating high school Mike joined his father and brothers in their farming operation. He enjoyed each part of the operation, but raising cattle was his passion. Mike showed cattle at the county level and had a successful livestock judging career, but in the 80s with an increasing interest in show cattle, Mike began breeding his higher quality commercial cows to popular new promotion bulls and sold the better offspring to local 4-Hrs and local club calf traders. In 1988 Mike met Cheri Hazelwood from south-central Indiana, and they were soon married. Although Cheri was not raised on a large farm in Trafalgar, Indiana, farming and rural Midwest life were her roots. For Mike and Cheri, raising a family with Christian values and strong work ethic was their priority. They would never have imagined in 1989 that within 15 years they would be blessed with 6 wonderful children; Ben, Josh, Hannah, Caleb, Rachel, and David. All six kids have interest in agriculture in one way or another. Because the farm was so instrumental in teaching the characteristics of dedication and hard work, they naturally decided to combine academia with the educational life experiences on a farm and homeschooled their children.

to make competitive calves, micro management in your cow herd was a must. Trial and error was still part of the learning curve and taught us many lessons.

As our program became more efficient at producing quality cattle and our skills sharpened as evaluators, our grooming skills were refined also. We three boys were responsible for the fitting, clipping, and presentation of all our show heifers and calves sold. We would study the champion pictures in magazines and watch some of the most successful fitters to see what they were doing and how they did it. We would simply see a new method of grooming and then go home and try it. As time progressed we found ourselves as some of the go to kids at state fair. We enjoyed our time fitting for others at state fair and getting to know other young fitters and competitive families.

Our time, study, and work began to pay off in 2007 when Ben exhibited the Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer at the Indiana State Fair, and Grand Champion at various other jackpot shows. That heifer became our most instrumental donor cow and raised numerous champions. However, 2008 was a things are happening kind of year. At the state fair, Josh exhibited the Champion Maine Heifer, Ben fit Celeste Martins Grand Champion Market steer, Josh was named Champion Overall Beef showman and later won the round robin to become the Master Showman. Notably, on the sidelines, our little brother, Caleb, was soaking in every experience, every show, and the wealth of knowledge was boiling inside for the future progress of our operation of which he is an integral part. Furthermore, a friendship was sparked with Brian Goettemoeller, whom we began doing business with. The following years were very good to us. Shows won include Hoosier Beef Congress, Purdue AGR, Heart of it all, and various other jackpots and preview shows within Indiana.

As Ben and Joshs show careers closed and college life began, our operation moved to focusing on our private treaty sale and marketing our animals for national level competitions. Some of our more popular winners include Becca Chamberlins Winnie female that became one of the winningest show heifers of 2012. Brandon Hagie purchased from us and exhibited a Shorthorn plus female that accomplished Grand Champion titles in Denver, Fort Worth, Junior Nationals, and NAILE. Each year we continue to grow and build our herd. This current year we are blessed to have had over 50 Top 5 finishes from the calves we sold this past fall. We couldnt do this without our loyal customers who work hard and are a pleasure to work with.

THE LORD HAS BLESSED OUR FAMILY AND CATTLE OPERATION AND WE ARE THANKFUL TO HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE A LITTLE OF OUR STORY WITH EVERYONE.

    1. WE ARE AN AVERAGE, EVERYDAY FARM FAMILY......that has lives outside of cattle shows and barn work. Mike operates and manages all aspects of the grain operation, manages the day to day functions of the cow herd, and still AIs each cow that goes through the chute during breeding season. He has served several years as a deacon at our church. Cheri is a stay-at-home farm wife and continues teaching Rachel and David at home. She is the operations biggest cheerleader yet biggest critic and sometimes has to get us back in line. She also devotes her time to Childrens ministries at our local church. Ben is busy as a part time real estate agent and works on the farm full time as well. He has been married for three years to Taylor, whom we adore. Josh recently completed his degree at Purdue University in Animal Science and judged on the Purdue livestock judging team, who won the national title this past fall at NAILE. He has accepted a position with Agri-King and works full time as an Area Sales Manager and Nutritional Consultant while maintaining his roll on the farm and within

the cattle operation. Hannah was our county fair queen, and we enjoyed supporting her through that experience. She has graduated from cosmetology school and works in the Lafayette area for Christina & Company Hair Salon and Day Spa. She helps out in any way she can around the farm and makes sure all the guys have fresh haircuts before they leave for shows. Caleb graduates high school this year yet has completed two full year of college credits. He plans to attend Purdue University. Caleb is quite the stockman and has enjoyed showing multiple species with much success. He exhibited the Champion Hampshire Lamb at the 2013 American Royal and has also shown many champions across the Indiana swine and sheep circuit. He has put together a banner collage that could rival the other boys combined. Rachel and David keep us tied to 4-H and youth activity for which we are thankful. Rachel has finished a successful show season with her steer, Trigger, and is full time in the cooler this summer in preparation for state fair. She has devoted time in the past to washing and blowing calves for our sales and enjoys spending time at shows with her friends. Its hard to believe David begins 4-H this year but has been working with cattle for a while now. Hes a busy little guy keeping track of his show pigs and playing travel league baseball over the summer.

    2. WE PROMOTE COMPETITIVE CUSTOMERS...... and treat each of our customers calves as our own personal project. We make it our mission to ensure each exhibitor is given an equal chance to accomplish their individual goals throughout the show season whether its to win a class, division, breed, or grand. Working alongside our customers to manage their calves is what we enjoy the most. Were always on call and love it. Having once been in their shoes, we are passionate about teaching, guiding, and training young 4-Hers so they can accomplish their dreams. Not saying we have all the answers, but if there is something we have learned in the past that we can pass on, that is our aim. It doesnt matter the price level or how we think the calf will do, our goal is to make sure every calf we sell is fed to its maximum potential, fit to the highest level, and ultimately made the best it can be. Our customers are often times our closest friends when its all said and done. We may be in the cattle business, but the people business is the most important part of life, and we hope to build relationships with customers and competitors that last a lifetime.

    3. WE ARENT FINISHED YET!!!As long as there is life, there is room to grow and improve in every aspect. Commonly, Ben, Josh, and Caleb will sit down after a show season or our annual private treaty sale and discuss how to improve various aspects of the operation. We have a saying around the barn that keeps us humble in times of accomplishment or success: the moment we think we have it figured out is the moment we have lost. As long as we continue to participate in this industry, we plan to never stop learning or striving for progress. Something we have learned is there is a lesson to be learned from everyone you meet, whether its accuracy or error, wisdom or foolishness, diligence or carelessness, and we must be willing to learn with humble hearts. This is a principle we try to practice within our family operation. Each person has a voice, experience, or a lesson learned that can help us all. Its what we draw from for strength and effectiveness in our family.

    4. WE ARE APPROACHABLE.Feel free to call or visit at any time. Whether on the farm or at a show, we love talking cattle and industry topics with fellow cattlemen. We are an open book ready for advice and willing to share anything of value known. If you see one of us at a show or at a farm across the country, be sure to stop and introduce yourself. Wed love to learn about your operation. Look us up on Facebook or on Showsteers.com if you have questions or are interested in the future of our operation.

Since my childhood years, Ive always been told that winning a major stock show would be like catching lightning in a bottle: something that I viewed nearly impossible. As I have grown older, I have realized that these lighting in a bottle chances dont come around very often, and

when they do, it becomes an irreplaceable moment to never be forgotten.
