“For from the greatness and the beauty of created things
comes a corresponding perception of their Creator.”
– Wisdom 13:5
My grandsons have started a nature exhibit on the back porch of the parsonage with items
they’ve picked up on their local explorations. Included in the collection so far is an 18
inch long snake skin (found by a hole under the front sidewalk), some bulbs (tulip?) that
were undoubtedly dug up by a deer (their hoof prints gave them away), a dissected owl pel-
let complete with several small rodent bones and an intact skull (“Awesome!” they said as
the bones appeared among the fur), a leg bone from some mid-sized creature (we’re guess-
ing a groundhog), and an assorted collection of rocks (“Look, Mumum! This one has gem
stones inside it!”).
What I love most, though, are the questions: How does that seed know to grow up to be a
flower and not a cucumber? Where do deer go during a thunder storm? Why doesn’t the
owl choke on the vole? How does a bee make honey?
Recently Pope Francis got some flak for his encyclical, “Laudato Si’, mi’ Signore (Praise
Be to You, My Lord) – On Care for Our Common Home,” but his teaching is not origi-
nal. Although tending the world we have been charged to “till and to keep” (Genesis 2:15)
has been politicized in recent years, respect, wonder and care for God’s creation has been
part of the Judeo-Christian tradition for thousands of years! When we take time to see and
wonder at the beauty of the world around us, we should be instinctively moved to praise
God, and hopefully, to do our part to ensure that our grandchildren’s grandchildren will
continue to be able to delight in the wonders of nature in their own back yards.
Wherever this summer takes you, I hope you’ll take time to wonder at the greatness and
beauty of the created things that cross your path, and don’t forget to pause to say, Laudato
Si’, mi’ Signore!
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

SHENKEL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
DO YOU HAVE NEWS FOR THE
BULLETIN OR THE NEWSLETTER?
All bulletin announcements should be at the
church office by each Tuesday at noon to be
included in that week’s bulletin. Newsletter
articles must be submitted by the 15th of
each month to be included in the next issue.
“Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a
monetary donation of your discretion to the Clus-
ter. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a
wheat arrangement will be placed on the altar.
Food Sculptures are also gladly accepted.
Altar flowers are $30.00 and
bulletin dedications are $6.50.
You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of
$30. With ever-increasing costs of choral music, this spon-
sorship will help stretch our budget and continue to bring
quality music to Shenkel. Dedicate your anthem to someone
special, an event in your life, or just to the fact that you love
music. Thank you for this needed contribution to Shen-
kel. Blue envelopes are in the Narthex for your sponsorships.
There are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication dur-
ing this and the upcoming months. Please complete one of the
special flower/bulletin/anthem envelopes below the sign-up
chart, enclose your payment, and either put it in the collection
plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You should
sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate
date after you have completed your envelope.
Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament of
Holy Communion at both services on the first
Sunday of each month. Each time commun-
ion is served, some of the bread and non-
alcoholic wine that has been consecrated at
the altar will be saved in a traveling commun-
ion kit, ready to go to the homes or hospital
rooms of members who were unable to be
present, and would like to receive the sacra-
ment. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you,
or someone you know, would appreciate
“distance-communing” with their Shenkel
Church family!
The Special Offering for July benefits the Bill Boyer Scholarship
Award. This scholarship was established to help further the education
of students who are members of Shenkel UCC and have completed high
school, or for mission work associated with technical and trade endeav-
ors. Applications , available from the church office, are due by February
15th of each year, and awards are announced by April 15th of each year.
In August, our offerings will benefit the North Coventry Meals on
Wheels program. Meals on Wheels of Chester County (MOWCC) serves hundreds of home-
bound citizens throughout the county. Please be as generous as you can.

Calling all
and
shoppers…. Our gift card fundraisers are up and running and a BIG suc-
cess! This is easy money with no extra costs or strings at-

UCC) in the envelopes found by the bulletins in the narthex.
Envelopes can be placed directly in the offering plate. Your

stores. Easy money for Shenkel and no extra cost for you.
Let’s keep it going!
Church Survey -
The PRC has heard your feed-back regarding our personnel, facility and services. We re-ceived approximately forty re-sponses and the feedback was mostly positive. We have for-warded our comments for review and action by the proper committees and will be following up to implement any changes over the next cou-ple months. If you would like more information about the results, please contact a member of the PRC.
SHENKEL LOVES TO GIVE….
REMEMBER TOO….
The Pottstown Cluster Food
Bank collection at Shenkel is
the 1st Sunday of each month. Please place your items
in the large plastic bins in the narthex.
AND...Please bring in your used cell phones and empty
ink cartridges and place them in the box across from
the nursery, or in the box located on the coat rack
shelf across from the office. The cartridges
are recycled to Staples, and the church re-
ceives credits toward the purchase of office
supplies. The used cell phones are given to
the police department to be distributed to
abused women.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
PROJECT Many thanks to everyone who either donated alumi-
num pull tabs or donated items to the Ronald
McDonald House wish list. On Tuesday, June 16 An-
drew and I along with Aaron and Michael delivered
three baskets and three boxes of items as well as a
half plastic container full of tabs to the Hershey
house. There were many “thank yous” for all the
donations. We were excited and proud to say we
were representatives from Shenkel U.C.C. Church.
As always, when our church is called on for support,
our members came through. Job well done KOTM
students and congregation members!

eating out and would like to get to know other Shenkel
members a little better. If you are a “regular” and plan to

The Prayer Shawl Ministry
This group does not meet at any
specific time, but works on the
shawls at home, then the Agape
group blesses them and they are
stored in the Agape room until
they find a "home." Please contact
Joan Palubinsky (610-451-4849), Pastor Bonnie, or any
member of the Agape group if you know of someone
you feel would enjoy receiving one of these (does not
need to be a member of Shenkel). Also, anyone inter-
ested in helping to knit or crochet we would love to
have you joining us! If you don't knit or crochet, yarn
donations are greatly appreciated.

Beginning on July 5th, we
will begin our outdoor
worship at 9:30 a.m. in the Grove, weather per-
mitting. Summer worship is informal – lawn
chairs and beach blankets are welcome! If the

moved inside to the social hall.

(610-451-4849 or [email protected]),
Tootie or Louise Hine (610-385-3716) or Barb Bur-

ences, so please give us your thoughts! We continue
to welcome anyone to join us!

preference by completing this slip and placing it in the offering plate at

ture review, Christian music, and
reflective conversation.
Confirmation!
A confirmation class will be held
during the 2015-16 school year for
all youth who will be in grade 6

packets have been sent to all qualifying youth, but
if you didn’t receive one, or have a family member,
neighbor or friend who might be interested in con-
firming their faith at Shenkel UCC, please let the
church office know asap so we can send them the
information. Thanks!
Every Step of the Way
A special off-Lectionary summer
worship series is being planned for
July and August! “Every Step of the
Way” will focus on faith in everyday
life, with a different theme/spiritual practice being
highlighted each week including Sabbath Keeping,
Compassion, Godly Play, Caring for our Bodies, and
more. Join us as we reflect together on ways we
might practice our faith “Every Step of the Way!”
Paddle with the Pastor!
Interested in joining Pastor Bonnie on a kayak excur-

are several places close
by to rent kayaks if you
don’t own one – once we
have a group of inter-
ested persons we’ll set
the date and location.
Call the church office or
let Pastor Bonnie know if
you’re interested in a relaxed time of easy paddling
and “conversation on the water!”

SUMMER CAMP AT GRETNA GLEN The tradition of summer camp at Gretna Glen has deep roots as we celebrate 55 years of pro-gramming this summer. 200 acres of scenic hills and woodlands are ideal for day and overnight camp. The opportunities for children & youth to explore nature, develop friendships, broaden their experiences and embrace their faith journey at Gretna Glen are never-ending. Be assured that the safety of Gretna Glen summer campers and guests is something we take seriously. In order to provide a “Safe Sanctuary,” we carefully select staff members and volunteers through an application proc-ess that requires references, background checks, and child abuse clearances. Staff and Volunteers are trained be-fore working with campers. Our campsite is accredited by the American Camp Association. To earn accreditation, Gretna Glen complies with more than 300 health, safety and program quality standards. We are also members of the Christian Camp and Conference Association.
CAMPING PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES are
available for day camps, overnight camps for both children and youth. Please remember that Skenkel will reim-burse 50% of camp registration fees to any camper from our church. For more information, please visit
http://www.gretnaglen.org/summer-camp.

ZOOK’S Chicken, Beef Meat Pies and Apple Dumpling Fundraiser
Since the Zook's Meat Pies were so well received, and I have been asked
when we will be placing another order, we can start now. We are adding 6" pies and also offering beef as a
choice. We will have a sign-up sheet in the office and envelopes in the narthex. You can drop your order enve-
lope in the offering plate or give your order to Lynne Moyer or to the church office. Payment must accompany
the order and checks are to be made payable to Shenkel UCC.
This time, we will be offering 6" chicken pies for $5.00 each and 6" beef pies for $5.50 each. 9" chicken pies are
$10.00 and 9" beef pies are $11.00. All are freshly made! A fresh single apple dumpling is $3.50 and doubles

GOOD TO KNOW…. PAGE 12
Community Labor Day Weekend
Worship
Sunday, September 6 – 10 am
In Shenkel’s Grove
As of now, six churches will be participating! Invite
your friends and neighbors, pack your lawn chairs or
blankets, and don’t miss this wonderful opportunity
for community worship with food and fellowship fol-
lowing the service.
Please note, communion in September will be served
on the second Sunday, September 13, due to the
Community service being held on September 6.
Share Your Thoughts! In June of 2014, Consistory made a deci-
sion to continue the 8:30 and 10:45 ser-
vices of worship every Sunday through
Pentecost, with no further discussion to
be held on the topic for an entire
year. Well... the year is up, and the request to consider keep-
ing one Sunday morning service year round has arisen (via the
annual all-church evaluation) once again.
On Sunday, July 12, during the fellowship time following wor-
ship, Consistory will host a discussion about the pros and cons
of moving to one Sunday service of worship vs. continuing
with two worship services during the school year. If you have-
n't already shared your viewpoint with someone on the Music
and Worship Committee or Consistory, or if you're just curious
what others are thinking, please plan to join the conversation!
If you are unable to be present on the 12th, it will be helpful if
you would speak with anyone on Consistory to add your per-
spective. Please consider your and your family's personal feel-
ings, as well as the possible impact of the decision on the
Shenkel community as a whole, and, on visitors to worship.
"Outside the box" thinking and specific concerns and ideas will
be especially gratefully received.
We will not be voting on the 12th, however Consistory will
appreciate all feedback.
Thank you,
The Shenkel Consistory: Brenda Berriker, Chris Gray, Sherri
Mocarski, Lynne Moyer, Sandy Peterman, Kim Yocom, Julie
Zachesky
All of our wonderful choirs are
on summer break. Enjoy your
extra free time and we’ll see you

SHARING WITH OUR CHURCH FAMILY ….
Carl and Marie Bade
thank all of the Shenkel
Family for the many
cards, calls and visits while recuperating
from Marie's operation and Carl's back
injury. We deeply appreciate all the acts
of kindness, the concerns and
prayers. Looking forward to being with
you as the healing progresses and we can
join you in worship and fellowship.
