Our ancient Temples in Jerusalemwere destroyed on the 9th day of themonth of Av in 586 BCE and 70 CE.We still derive value by devoting the dayof Tisha B’Av to fasting and prayer, tomemory of tragedies past, to dreams ofredemptions yet to come.
The Talmud (Yoma 9b) suggests thatthe Temple in Jerusalem was destroyeddue to baseless hatred; because peopledehumanized their opponents.
At the time preceding the destructionof the Second Temple, people were divided into hostile factions. There were zealots and pacifists, war-mongers and peaceniks, religious extremists and moderates. The groups stereotyped anddemonized each other. This led to the fragmentation of society andto the inability to work together in a unified fashion. Ultimatelythis led to the fall and destruction of Jerusalem.
We deeply lament the fact that our enemies engage in dehu-manizing us, in presenting us as hateful objects rather than as fellow human beings. We profoundly wish that our enemies wouldtake the time to look into our eyes and realize that we all are created by the same God. Because we are profoundly disappointedby the hatred aimed against us, we should strive to avoid hatingothers. We need to elevate our own humanity by seeing the humanity in our fellow Jews and in all human beings.
Tisha B’Av certainly has meaning for us today. It is a day forfasting, prayer and introspection. It is a prod to national memory. It is a reminder of past failures. It is a clarion call for a wiser, morehumane and happier future.

PRESIDENT SYLVIA BERMANSummer has come to South Florida
and with it the return of many of ourmembers to their cooler climates. Italso signals the beginning of vacationtime where we struggle to get membersto be at our Daily Minyan. Remember,we are the only local Synagogue thathas services every morning and evening, allowing those saying Kaddish to have aplace to worship. It is because of thisthat our reputation as the place to go to
pay respects, continues.By now all your summer plans are finalized. Did you think about
finding a Synagogue when you reach a city? You would be amazedwhat you would learn. I visited a small Orthodox Shul in Glasgowlast year, one that was only open on Shabbos and had a dwindlingmembership. The Director happened to arrive at the same time asI and unlocked the doors and gave me a “tour”. Talk about security.Every floor had its own entry pad, every door was locked. The entrances to the Sanctuary read “Women” on one side. It was understood that the men would enter from the other door. Built in1879 it was everything you hoped to see.
In Nairobi, the Orthodox Shul has services every Friday nightand you need to let them know you are coming, as security is tightthere as well. The women sit upstairs and the services are run bylocals, who are on the Bima with their children. Looking down onthe seats below the men were wearing suits, khaki shorts and shirtsand even Maasai wraps, but the service was as we hear it in ourShul.
In Paris, if you want to visit the Grand Synagogue, you have to let them know you are coming and get their approval. The tightest security I have ever seen.
During Kristelnacht, the Orthodox Shul in Regensberg was destroyed, but it stands strong and beautiful today and those of youwho are taking a Danube River cruise should walk there. Perhapsthe gate will be open and you can visit the rebuilt Chapel. Theyhave services every Shabbos as well, with enough members to makea minyan.
As you can see, we have representation everywhere. We all knowthat Bernie Schwartz aka Tony Curtis paid for the weeping-willow-like memorial sculpture to the 600,000 Hungarian Jewsmurdered in the Holocaust, but what about the Jews of Los Angeles who make sure that the Shul, in Rhodes built in 1577, isavailable. I even visited a Jewish Community Center in Odessa, only to be met by a young boy whose only English was “what’s yourname?”, but he knew Hebrew.
So take the time to find your roots, your vacation will be enriched by your explorations.

The summer months are upon us! Many ofyou are focused on vacations and the hot, lazydays of summer ahead. Here at the Templeoffice, we are thinking about fall and the yearahead (no worries, we'll focus on summertoo). Our calendar is already jam-packed withevents, programs and holiday celebrations. I cannot wait to share all the details as each event gets closer. Whether we are continuing “old” traditions or whether we are
launching something new, Temple Sinai will continue to be the center of our Jewish community on so many levels. We continue towelcome new members into our Temple family and we will neverstop celebrate long-standing members. Either way, our goal is to remain vital to all who wish to be connected! No matter what is inthe works, our programs will only be as successful as the membersand volunteers who can help. Please consider lending ahand…whether you choose to be a part of the High Holiday services, help with Share-A-Meal, chaperone a youth group event, attend a class with the Rabbi or one of the many other free lectureswe offer or whether you are able to help us make a minyan any dayof the week, one thing is for sure and it is that we need YOU! As wemove into another year of programming, be sure to read the weeklyeblasts, come for a Shabbat service, follow us on Facebook or justpop in to say hello!
Be sure to watch your mail for information on the Book of Remembrance, the schedule of services and children’s programmingand other High Holy Day details.

Camp Sinai 2018Summer Safari is in full swing here at Camp Sinai. We are celebrating the 2018 summer with themed weeks
such as Jungle Adventure, Birds & Insects, Farm Fun, Crazy Carnival, and more. Our summer will be filledwith fun-filled activities, field trips and of course, our Friday mornings Shabbats, when our campers join together to say blessings, sing songs, dance, and partake in a mitzvah project to help our community.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful large and modern Morningstar Family Playground, now with our ownrock-wall! The children love to climb the various structures there, “drive” the two circular paths, play withlarge wooden blocks (a gift from our Parents’ Association), and sing and dance on the Marks Family Stage, complete with standing musical instruments. And we are fortunate to have our own pool, where the childrenare taught the basics of swimming by our professional instructors.
When children go to Camp Sinai, they are given the opportunity to grow independently. Whether for a dayor an entire summer, we treasure the independence of our campers. Our children build social skills and problem-solving skills by being partof a supportive community and partaking in activities together. Camp Sinai campers are challenged and encouraged to grow every day.
Now if we could only do something about the rain! Have a wonderful summer,

Our synagogue is comprised of loving and devoted families who are incrediblysupportive of their children’s education. It

Temple Sinai of Hollywood 7
Welcome to our New Religious School DirectorTemple Sinai of Hollywood is thrilled to welcome ELIOT TILLINGER as Religious School
Director as of May 15, 2018. Eliot is a professional educator and leader who has achieved a vast degree of experience and success at both religious and secular schools. As the Education Director, hehas successfully led the B'nai Aviv Religious School for the past seven years where he is most proudof the strong bonds he's forged between the students, families, faculty, and Jewish community. Priorto becoming the Education Director, he was a passionate religious schoolteacher at B'nai Aviv for sixyears. Eliot is also the current principal of the A+ rated Everglades Elementary School in Weston. Asthe principal since Everglade's inception in 1998, he has built one of the finest elementary schools inFlorida with care, respect and his innate ability to attract the finest educators. Prior to becoming principal, he held several positions in the public schools including teacher, after school program director, curriculum specialist, behavioral specialist, and assistant principal.
Eliot holds a Bachelor of Arts in Education B.A.E. and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership M.S.Ed. He was president of AIPAC in college; and as an active member in Hillel whilein college, he met his lovely wife at a South Florida Hillel Retreat. A fun fact is that he and his wife
were married on the bimah in our very own sanctuary! He and his wife have lived in Broward County for several decades where they haveraised their four wonderful children. His two older children attend college in Cleveland, Ohio and New Haven, Connecticut. His youngertwo children attend Broward County Public Schools. His children have been active in religious school, bar/bat mitzvah programs, temple youth groups, temple youth choir, and Jewish summer camps. His most memorable experiences of his youth were his involvementin several Jewish youth groups and his family's involvement in their conservative synagogue. One of his most passionate topics he taughtas a religious schoolteacher was the history of the Holocaust as he has a personal connection being the child of Holocaust survivors. Hisparents arrived in the United States in 1951 after reclaiming their lives in a Displaced Persons' camp in Germany. He speaks fluent Yiddish and reminisces how he enjoyed speaking with his religious school teachers after class in Yiddish.
Eliot is enthusiastically looking forward to his new opportunity to develop the "next generation" of our Temple Sinai Religious School. Some of his many goals for our school include exploring Judaism in a wonderful and educational way, teaching our children of our past, living the present, and learning how to manage the future. He feels that his mission of educating our Jewish youth and enriching theirlives in today's Jewish world is an honor and a privilege.
We are honored to welcome Eliot and his family into our community. Members can reach him at [email protected] or by calling (954) 987-0026, ext. 6.

Around Temple SinaiSisterhood Torah Fund Luncheon
It was a bright Sunday morning when Lorraine Glass opened her lovely home to Sisterhood for the 2018 Torah Fund Brunch. A verynice crowd gathered and we all said a shehekianu on her spanking new kitchen since it was the first event after the beautiful remodeling.
The sisters outdid themselves bringing a wide variety of delicious foods. After shmoozing and eating, Joyce Robbins presented a devar Torahrelating to the importance of the Torah Fund in supporting Jewish education. We then settled down to hear a most comprehensive and en-joyable speaker, Marc Lowell, CLU, ChFC and President/CEO of A.I.D. Wealth Management. Jackie Greenberg, our Torah Fund Chair, introduced Marc He spoke about all the things we ladies should be doing or plan to do, in order to keep our lives running smoothly in thefinancial arena. He was most informative and answered many questions from his audience.
Jackie announced that we have Torah Fund cards available for purchase and thanked Lorraine for opening her lovely home to us. Afterannouncing a few raffle prizes we left with a full stomach and a smile on our faces. A good time was had by all.

For the 8th consecutive year, Sylvia Berman of Post Haste Travel and Cheri Rothschild presented an evening of international inter-est. This year’s program was titled “Sand, Sun and Synagogues” a look at the Jewish Caribbean. Guest presenters included Temple mem-bers Richard Miller, Dr. Gilda Oran, and Joyce Robbins. Each told personal stories, including visuals, of their experiences in Barbados,Jamaica and St. Thomas. Gilda Oran captivated the audience with tales of growing up Jewish in Barbados. She emphasized how the com-munity is now growing and building, and invited us to come and meet her family.
The evening also included a “taste of the islands” where participants enjoyed jerk chicken on skewers, plantains, rice and beans, andrum cake. We thank Sinai member, Victor Olshansky, for his donation of several bottles of his Ziami rum. Steel drums and Bob Mar-ley favorites also enhanced the evening.
Next spring’s global location was announced. All are invited to experience Jewish North Africa (Morocco and Egypt)

Summer Program Series
Beat the heat and join us for some fun and interesting programs this summer!
Are you aware that Temple Sinai has the enviable distinction of being the only Conservative synagogue in Hollywood and one of the few in Broward County that has maintained an egalitarian morningand afternoon minyan every day for the past 74 years?
At times, it is a struggle to make a minyan. Please join us when you can. It would be a mitzvah and greatly appreciated.
*Bagels and coffee are provided after the morning service.
PLEASE SUPPORT OUR DAILY MINYANMonday - Friday 8:15 a.m.* | Monday - Thursday 5:30 p.m.
ADOPT A BOOKPlease take home a lovingly and gently used book. These books are currently re-
siding on a book shelf near the chapel entrance. Free for Members of Temple Sinai

The donation for each Tallit will be$36.00 minimum (more if you so desire). The tallit can bepersonalized. Please send your checks to Temple Sinai.Thank you.
