TEAM OF THE MONTHFROM THE EDITORIt has been great to finally get a chance to stop, even for just a short moment, and reflect on last month!s first issue of the Sports Buzz. What we first envisioned for the Sports Buzz concept was to actually document as many achievements from our great little community as we could and put it into a format that is easy and enjoyable to read. Something that can be picked up and read by people from all walks of life. From a young primary school kid to an aged pensioner. Something that can sit on your coffee table or kitchen buffet for a couple days or weeks and be read while watching TV or just filling in time.

I love to read newspaper articles particularly when I know the person or subject involved in the story, and this is exactly what the Sports Buzz aims to do. Allow you to read about the achievements of family, friends, acquaintances and neighbours. This is why we will always endeavour to write any articles or stories that are given to us, and at the same time, mention the names of our local athletes. So if you know anyone out there who deserves a mention or a bit of a shout out, let us know.

I t has been so upl i f t ing and motivating to know that people have enjoyed the style of our publication. And, based on the feedback received after the release of our first issue, it was a huge success and we are confident that this second issue is an even better read than the first issue.

Oh, and by the way, we are now on Facebook so feel free to look us up o r y o u c a n fi n d u s a t www.sportsbuzz.net.au

SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH

Ann Procter started water skiing at the age of 4 on the Hawkesbury River and has loved it ever since. Within one year she was able to ski on one ski and by the age of 8 she was barefoot skiing.

Her love of water skiing has taken her all over the world competing at 6 world Championships in countries like US, NZ, Spain, England and Belgium.

In 1997 at the age of 14, Ann was crowned Junior World Champion and in 2001 at the tender age of 18 she won her first of 3 Open Women!s Formula One World Championships. Her other world titles were won in 2003 and 2007. She was also runner-up at the 2005 World Championships making her not only Australia!s most successful skier but the world!s most successful female skier of all time.

The training required to reach and maintain this level of skiing is very demanding and intense. When she is at her optimum level Ann trains for a minimum of 3 hours a day combining both strength and cardio endurance. On top of this, it is essential that Ann is able to get out on the water two or three times a week for at least one hour on the roughest water possible.

Because of the demanding nature of the sport at this level and having to fulfil her commitments as a nurse at Nepean Private Hospital, Ann has decided to

take a step back from competing on the world stage and focus her attention on local events such as State and National Titles, Bridge to Bridge and other fun club events.

Ann is also keen to stay involved in the sport at a local level so that she can give back to the sport that has given so much to her. Mentoring and assisting the new breed of race skiers coming through so that Australia can remain the dominant force on the world stage is very important to Ann.

A n n h a s b e e n a n e x c e p t i o n a l ambassador for the sport of water ski racing. It is not only her ability on the water, but the way she conducts herself off the skis that has seen her selected as the Athlete!s Representative on the World Water Ski Racing Council. This role means that Ann is the voice for the world!s elite water skiers. To be selected by your peers to be their voice is possibly the highest compliment that can be paid to an athlete in any sport and this is an achievement that Ann should be very proud of.

In a sport that is not as high profile and

lucrative as other sports, Ann has had to

rely on the support from a number of

people and organisations. Ann would

like to thank her family for all the hard

work and commitment in getting her to

the top, Stinga Racing Team, Greg

Houston and Jo Houston, Kevin

Boylan and family, Wing Wetsuits and

DC Water Skis for their support over the

years.

LOCAL LEGEND

Ray Dukes was virtually raised on Leonay Golf Course, living across the road from the old club house from the time he was born and growing up in and around Leonay and Emu Plains his entire life. The 78-year old father of seven still lives in Emu Plains today.

From the time Ray could walk he could swing a club and in 1948 at the age of 15 he joined Leonay Golf Club, the minimum age for a member at this time. A year later at the age of 16 Ray won t h e fi r s t o f h i s 2 0 A G r a d e championships. The same year he became an apprentice greenkeeper on the course before taking over from N o r m K i r k a s t h e C o u r s e Superintendent (Head Greenkeeper) in 1954. Ray remained working on the golf course for a total of 48 years until 1995.

If it wasn!t for Ray!s love of Leonay Golf Course and Emu Sports Club, Leonay may have been a lot different to the lovely suburb it is today. Ray recalls the period of time in the early 60s when the Leonay area was being subdivided and sold off for residential purposes. Leonay Golf Course was actually called Penrith Golf Course at the time until the current site for Penrith Golf Course was built in 1964. The owners of the course were looking to sell the land so Ray and

colleague Ivar Spears purchased the course on behalf of the club for a grand total of $90,000 in 1968.

Ray was not only the course !s greenkeeper though. He was also Emu Sports Club!s first Secretary Manager in 1969. This was a role that Ray combined with his green keeping duties for over 7 years. However, out on the course is where Ray was most comfortable. In fact, Ray was so good at his job he was offered many positions including a job in Singapore, but declined due to his family commitments.

It is Ray!s feats as a golfer that is unrivalled in the Nepean District and is unlikely to be surpassed by any amateur golfer in the near future. He has played in the Australian Open on 3 occasions and played against, and beaten, some of the biggest names in the sport such as Kel Nagle, Peter Thompson, Roger Davis and Jack Newton. He beat Newton by 1 stroke to take out an Australian Open qualifying event at Pymble Golf Course in 1969 and in the same year was the fourth placed amatuer behind the great South African, Gary Player at the Australian

open. He also took out the Killara Cup in 1959 in a field that consisted of many professional golfers including Australia!s Kel Nagle.

Modestly, he does admit, “When I beat players like Jack Newton and Roger Davis they were only 18 and I was in my 30!s. I wouldn!t like to have played them later in their careers”.

To go into detail about all of Ray!s achievements as a golfer would take considerable time. He has many titles to

h i s n a m e i n c l u d i n g 2 0 C l u b Championships, 3 at Penrith and 17 at Leonay, 7 Nepean Dis t r ic t Gol f Association Championships, 4 NSW Greenkeepers Championships, NSW Over 70s Championship at the age of 71, and has won over 100 Open events at courses all over Sydney and Regional NSW.

“I really enjoyed the compet i t ion o f go l f , particularly when a lot of the Open Championships were 36 hole events played in one day”

Perhaps Ray !s most remarkable achievement is competing in 62 c o n s e c u t i v e A G r a d e G o l f Championships at Leonay. To play in 62 Championships in 62 years is truly astonishing and this is a feat that will never be matched.

Asked what it was that set him apart from amateur golfers, Ray says, “It was my will to win. I really enjoyed the competition of golf, particularly when a lot of the Open Championships were 36 hole events played in one day”.

“I also practised very hard. I would hit a couple hundred golf balls a day and play a round of golf whenever I could. I also ran about 1 hour every evening just to keep fit”.

Talking to Ray, you get a sense that even a historian well versed on the history of Emu Plains could not tell you as much about the history of sport in the area. Dukes Oval, home of Emu Plains Cricket Club and more recently the Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club, is actually named after Ray!s Grandfather, Tom Dukes. “There are a few different stories around about who the field is named after, but it is actually named after Tom who was a very keen cricketer in the area. He and his brother-in-law hit an opening partnership of 251 runs at the ground one day”.

The Emu Plains Netball Club 10B Swallows are a team of only 7 players this season but are putting in a giant size effort each week and are currently in first place. So good luck to them and their coach Lisa for the remainder of the season.Half way through the season Emu Plains Netball Club has many teams, especially their seniors, in the top 4 and several others on the brink.

A troupe of 25 dancers from You Can Dance Performing Arts School, Emu Plains will perform on the Pacific Jewel Cruiseline in the July school holidays. These students who regularly perform and represent the studio are away 10 days and will perform twice on board as well as participate in a number of workshops with other performers on board.

Panthers Tri Club had a number of its athletes competing in the CareFlight Helicopter Woodford to Glenbrook Race recently. Participants can choose to do a 25km trail run or Mountain Bike through the Oaks Firetrail. All proceeds of this race go to CareFlight.Local members of the Panthers Tri Club who completed the run were, Cloe Reece, Karen Cowles, Dave " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " "Richardson, Gavin Powell, Vanessa Powell, Gary O'Loughlin, Belinda Simpson, Shane Simpson and on his bike Paul Wills. For some this was their first attempt at this course whilst for others it was an enjoyable repeat event. Although the weather was crisp and cool at 10:15am for the start of the race, the sun was shining and adrenalin pumping which sure made the runners warm up quickly for the event.

J . A G Y M N A S T S TA K E H O M E “ABUNDANCE OF AWARDS”Gymnasts f rom J.A Gymsports between the ages of 2 to 12 years competed at a Recreational Gymnastics competition on the 26th June at Springwood Boys and Girls Club.1st in their sections were Liam Coburn, Hayley Sepping , Alice Chitos , Ashleigh Zahra, Serene Bargh, Liam Brooker, Hophie Noblett and Chelcie Noblett. 2nd Place: Jemma Noblett, Kaili Yeo, Oscar Sultana, Caitlyn Callow, Olivia Bennet and Henry Muir. 3rd Place: Liam Ross, Paris Franklin and Abbie Smith 4th Place: Holly Brooker, Chole Languis, Ashley Hudson, Ryan Snookes and Alana Hennesy. Leonay!s Shane Simpson completed the Gold Coast Marathon last weekend in the astounding time of 2hrs 58mins. Coming off some serious training after finishing the North Face 100km trail run six weeks ago, Shane was in peak condition to clock his personal best time for a road marathon.

The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions U/12 Div 1 AFL team have been in fine form heading into the last 5 games before the semi finals. The team has won 9 out of 11 games and currently sit in 2nd position on the ladder with a for and against percentage of 182%.Similarly, the U/12 Div 2 Lions are in a strong position in the run home to the

SPORTS SNIPPETS semi finals. They currently sit in 3rd position on the competition ladder.

Over the long weekend in June, the squads from the Nepean Aquatic Centre attended a training camp under the guidance of Head Coach Jackie Barck. The purpose of the team building weekend was for the athletes to get to know the new members of the team as well as experience some new cross-training activities and a higher intensity of pool training. Jackie Barck will accompany a team of 5 athletes to compete at the Australian Open National competition in Adelaide from 1 – 3 July 2011. Sian Lucas, Kara Leo, Caitlin Oehm, Michelle Bowd and Amanda Fowler will travel to South Australia to compete at the new Adelaide venue against the best swimming talent in our country.

SCHOOL ZONE

EMU LEONAY DERBYAs a young fella, there is nothing better than lining up to play against your mates, especially in a game of footy. That!s exactly what happened when the boys from Emu Plains Public School lined up against neighbouring Leonay Public School in the Panther Trophy Grand Final at Western Weekender Stadium, St Mary!s recently. A lot of the boys from both teams play weekend footy with each other for Emu Plains Rugby League Club so the stakes were certainly high, particularly in terms of the bragging rights that go hand in hand with local derbies.

Playing only 10 minute halves meant that there was always going to be a huge advantage to the team who could score first and it was Leonay who posted the first points in way of a try to Boyd Neal after 5 minutes of play. His try was converted by Jayden Malley which further consolidated the lead. Not wanting to shut down their attack and defend their lead, Leonay kept looking for scoring opportunities and when Tom Wallace crossed less than a minute before half time and Aiden Lafferty converted to make it 12-nil, the crowd really got a sense that it was going to

be hard for Emu Plains to claw their way back into the game.

In the end Leonay held out a spirited Emu Plains team to take out the close encounter 12-nil in a hard fought game.

Both teams were coached by former students from each school, and former Emu Plains Rugby League players, Brett Mc Elroy (EPPS) and Paul Wallace (LPS), both of whom have children playing in each of the teams.

Emu Plains coach Brett Mc Elroy is just so positive about the level of ability of the players from both teams. “The fact

CHINA HERE SHE COMESCelina Farrugia, 13, from Emu Plains is amongst one of the many dancing role models in the area. Celina started attending dance classes at age four and as time flew past she has developed and learnt new valuable skills from dancing.

When asked if she has participated in any significant events she answers “I have done Showcase Regionals and Nationals where I’ve competed against dancers from NZ, USA, Canada and Australia. So far in my dancing career, I have competed in competitions and in most of them I came in places like 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended along with a variety of trophies. The Highest mark out of 100 I have achieved is 96.75,” she states.

Celina Farrugia with Dance Teacher Ms Zoller

Celina trains 18 hours weekly and surely enough her great effort has already paid off. She is one of several lucky dancers in NSW promoted to attend a special trip to China to compete where she will be up against equally competitive and talented students.

Celina will fly to China on the 24th of September and will be staying there until the 1st of October.

“I was really excited and nervous;” She explained “I was also scared to go alone and if my parents would disagree for me to go. I felt lucky and joyful because I’ve worked hard and I’ve been rewarded for my hard work.”

Celina’s message for people who share the same passion or the same in te res ts fo r danc ing i s t ru l y encouraging as she says, “Never give up on what you love and you can never stop improving. Work hard to the best of your abilities because you will get amazing results in everything and gratefully be rewarded.”

Celina Farrugia is one of the many talented dancers at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High.

FORMER EMU GREATS #FEGS!What is a FEG you ask?Well, a FEG is a Former Emu Great, although the term "Great! is used rather loosely in terms of the members of this organisation.

FEGS President, Kevin Canning describes the new organisation as “an opportunity to give back to a club that has given me plenty. It is an old boy!s club for people who have had an involvement in Emu Plains Rugby League. We do also have, and welcome, any female members too”.

“It was an idea that came about over a couple of beers with close mates at a wake and it seemed that the only time we all got to catch up these days was at funerals. So one thing led to another and we formed the organisation in February this year.”

“Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club officially entered the Penrith Competition back in 1967, however we have found photos that trace way back to the early 1900!s” Kevin says.

Not to do things by halves, the FEGS hit the ground running and have already signed over 100 members.

FEGS founding member Paul Wallace said, “the two main objectives of the FEGS was to reconnect with former friends and teammates but just as importantly to give something back to the club and the local community. With the funds we raise through membership and fundraisers, we are injecting it back into the club and its members. We offer financial support and help to those who need or deserve it”.

“Already this year the FEGS have supported two families with funeral costs, another family who had fallen on hard times and just recently we paid for accommodation for one of the club!s bright stars of the future when he was selected to play in a representative tournament”.

The FEGS organisation is open to not only players but anyone who has been involved in the club in any capacity. This includes former coaches, trainers, managers, supporters or even sponsors. They can be past or present it doesn!t really matter. What matters is the more members FEGS have, the more they can put back in to the club where it is most needed.

FEGS plan on holding several key fundraising events each year and are planning a golf day this September. Already this year they initiated the John Pesle/Tony Dicker Shield which will be an annual shield played between Emu Plains and St Marys.

Those wanting more information can check out the FEGS website at www.formeremugreats.com which has access to many pages of photos, current members and upcoming events. Or, you can contact Kevin Canning on 0418479366.

Emus bound for CanberraThe Emu Plains FC U/11 Div 1 soccer team (pictured on page 2 as the Emu Leonay Sports Buzz Team of the Month) are headed to Canberra in the school holidays to contest the 2011 Kanga Cup. The Kanga Cup is the biggest youth soccer tournament in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the biggest in the world.

The boys came 4th in the same tournament last year and will look to better that this year. It will, however be a tough task with the boys competing up an age in the U/12s against some quality 1st Division teams.

The team has done a lot of fundraising to get to Canberra and have raised over $10,000. A dedicated team of parents have organised a car wash where the kids washed over 120 cars in 2 days, a Bunnings BBQ and a poker night at Emu Sports Club.

The most innovative fund raiser though was the juggle-a-thon. This was the brainchild of coach Kevin Allen and involved every boy in the team practising their juggling skills with the soccer ball in preparation for a juggle-a-thon display. The boys had to get people to sponsor them (a dollar amount per successful juggle) so the more juggles the player could make with the ball, using their feet of course, the more money they raised. Riley Ellem was able to juggle the soccer ball 36 times without it touching the ground and Jack Pockran was the next best with 16.

The Emu Plains FC U/15s are also heading to Canberra for the Kanga Cup.

VALE PETER SAVAGE20/12/1951 – 4/6/2011

Peter Edward Savage passed away this month after losing his battle with cancer. Throughout this battle he defied experts along the way with his never say die attitude and spirited will to live.

Peter had the same attitude throughout his sporting career. He excelled in athletics and league as a youngster but cricket was where his real passion and sporting ability lay. He was a right arm fast bowler and from a young age collected a host of bowling awards in

Golf ReportBY CAMERON FAICO

The Leonay Golf Club has returned to it!s winning ways on course of late with several dominant displays signaling a renewed focus at the foot of the mountains.

A superb display in the Masters Pennants series has seen club stalwarts Laurie Cupples, Charlie Xuereb, Steve Hall and Bruce Grant lead the charge at the elite senior level. Breezing through the round robin stage of the State tournament, the tightly-knit squad has earned themselves a brief rest before being notified of the opposition for their opening finals match in mid-July. With Penrith Golf Club also easing through the preliminary stage with little fuss, a hotly-contested local derby looms as a distinct possibility.

T h e f o u r s o m e s m a t c h p l a y championship was recently decided and it was a hotly contested final with evergreen lefty Mick Yates combining with the big-hitting David Grosse to edge out President Kevin Small and Course Superintendent Aaron Grame 2-up. There is a real transitional period going on at the club at present and it is great to see some of the "old heads! teaching the younger brigade that a cool demeanour in high pressure contests is essential when competing for a distinguished place on the Leonay honour board.

At the other end of the spectrum have been the very encouraging signs from local juniors Ben Breckenridge and S a m G e r v i n a s a t t h e Tr a i n e e Professional level.# # Some# real consistency has entered Breckenridge!s

game this year and his five under-par victory at Shelley Beach has seen him rocket into fourth position on the PGA NSW Trainee Order of Merit. Gervinas has also hit his straps of late and finds himself placed inside the Top 25 heading into the winter playing break. These performances highlight the great pathways available to junior members at Leonay.

School-aged members are being encouraged to join the club as the end of the financial year draws to a close and free tuition is being offered as an incentive to encourage rookies of all abilities.

the Blacktown District where he grew up as a teenager.

Peter was highly regarded by everyone who played with him and he was equally respected by those who played against him. Playing the majority of his cricket for Penrith Cricket Club in the Sydney Grade Competition, Peter held the record for a long period of time for most dismissals in the club. He was the first bowler for Penrith CC to reach the 400 wicket milestone. A feat that few bowlers will ever have the longevity to achieve. A rare achievement that gave Peter bragging rights amongst his family and friends was his dismissal of former Australian Captain, Allan Border. Those who played with him will remember the good times associated with playing alongside a bloke like "Sav!. He would always enjoy a cold beer after the game with his mates.

After retiring from grade cricket with Penrith CC, Peter continued his playing days with Emu Plains CC 1st Grade team. He also coached his son, Brett!s cricket team from U/9s through to U/

16s, winning Nepean District 1st Division premierships in U/10s and then 4 premierships in a row from U/12s to U/15s. He was a naturally gifted coach who had the respect of all players and had an uncanny ability of bringing the team together as a close knit unit of players. Peter also coached Nepean District Representative teams and his mentoring ability also led to him coaching several U/16 Green Shield and U/21 Poidevan Grey Shield teams with Penrith CC.

As a coach, Peter will always be remembered for not only his astute knowledge of the game, but his fairness and common sense approach to coaching junior sport. In junior cricket, coaches are required to umpire as well, and Peter was always reluctant to dismiss an opposing batsman LBW, even though some coaches would happily raise the finger to dismiss a young player and improve their team!s chances of winning.

Peter will be sadly missed by his family and the many mates he leaves behind.

RARE SPORTING FACT

Bart Cummings and Tommy Smith became the first horse trainers to win $1 million in prize money.

The fascinating thing is that they both reached this milestone on the same day in June 1974.

Cummings was the first to hit the $1 million mark when Hello Honey came second at Warwick Farm.

Smith followed suit only 2 hours later when his horse Igloo won the Brisbane Cup.
