OurJulymeetingfeaturesatalk,demonstrationandsalesbyKeithTaylor,anexceptionalgrowerofsucculentplantsandacreatorofuniquepotteryforpresentingsucculentsandallotherkindsofplantsinimpressiveways.Hemarketshiscreationsas“PotterybyKitoi”(we’llhavetoaskhimaboutthat),andcombinesartfultechniquesforbothhorticultureandplantpresentation.
Aspreparationforhisvisit,youmightwanttotakeacloselookatyourbestplantsandimagineiftheywouldlooktheirbestinaveryspecialpot.
Then,visithiswebsiteorFacebookpage(therearelinksonp.3)andscrollthroughasamplingoftheimagestoappreciatehisinventiveartistry.
InAugust,wewillhavethere-scheduledpresentationbyKarenZimmerman,SucculentPropagatorforHuntingtonGardens,andanaccomplishedhybridizerofAloes.HervisitwasplannedforourJunemeeting,butaschedulingglitchrequiredashifttoourAugustmeeting.Therewasalotofanticipationofhervisitandplantsale,andthatenergyislikelytocarryontotheAugustsession.
DuringourJunemeeting,KenByrnevisitedfromtheCentralCoastCSStogiveanupdateonplansforthe2019CSSAConventioninSanLuisObispo,andtoinvitemembersofourSocietytofillvolunteerpositionsatthatevent.Thedetailsareincludedonpp.6&7ofthisnewslettersoconsiderifhelpingtomakethiseventasuccesswouldfitintoyourplans.Itcouldbegreatfun!

2019CSSAConference:Ourguest,KenByrne,spoketotheBoardabouttheupcomingCSSABiannualConventiontobeheldinSanLuisObispoinJulyof2019,attheSanLuisObispoVeteran'sHallatGrandandMontereyStreets.Heprovidedalistofneededvolunteerdutypositionsthatneedtobefilled,andaskedifourSocietymemberswouldvolunteerforthesepositions.DatesofinvolvementforvolunteerswillbeJuly16,17,18,19,and20,2019.
KenByrnealsoaskedifourSocietywouldbeinterestedinsellingt-shirts,coffeemugs,orothergiftitems(otherthanplantsandpots,tobeofferedonlybytheCSSA).Finally,heinvitedourSocietytodonateitemsfortheConventionVisitorWelcomeBag,e.g.,tweezers,pencils,magnifyingglasses,notepads,andthelike.About300ofeachitemwouldbeneeded.
TheboardinvitedKenByrnetopresenttheseoptionstotheSociety’smembersduringthegeneralmeeting,andwillfurtherdiscussourSociety’sparticipationintheconventionatfutureboardmeetings.

Opuntia,commonlycalledpricklypear,isagenusinthecactusfamily,Cactaceae.Pricklypearsarealsoknownastuna(fruit),sabra,nopal(paddle,pluralnopales)fromtheNahuatlwordnōpalliforthepads,ornostle,fromtheNahuatlwordnōchtliforthefruit;orpaddlecactus.ThegenusisnamedfortheAncientGreekcityofOpus,where,accordingtoTheophrastus,anedibleplantgrewandcouldbepropagatedbyrootingitsleaves.ThemostcommonculinaryspeciesistheIndianfigopuntia(O.ficus-indica)
