1 Bradford Woods Community Church July 2015 Issue MONTHLY NEWSLETTER An Epistle from Ed By Ed Cadwallader, Pastor Life is full of both opportunities and challenges. That is one way to see it. The other way is to see life is as a series of problems interspersed with fun and pleasure and rest. The thinking goes that if we can just get through the next problem, get the frustration to stop, or solve the issue that plagues us, then we have a better chance of experiencing what we want, which is fun and rest. But, more and more I am seeing this approach as misleading and even wrong. We all face storms and waves and scary moments. We all face things that we are unsure of. What will the future hold? How will we find provision? What does God have in store for us? If we see these questions as things to be solved so we can get to the life we always wanted, we miss what God wants to show us in the moment, namely God’s self. What if the beauty is found in the midst of the storm? What if God’s best for us is not getting us to a place of rest and relaxation but in actually training us to enter the battle and find Him there with the love and hope that we need? With God’s self? Psalm 16:11 says, “You make known to me the path of life, in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” No matter the storm, if we are in God’s presence, there is joy and beauty. Sometimes, we find God in the midst of the crashing waves and the storm. Sometimes the beauty that we seek is hidden in the midst of the trial that we are trying to escape or just get through instead of in what we perceive to be the pleasure and satisfaction that we seek out of life. God’s way is better. God is sovereign. He is committed to cleaning us up and helping to conform us to the image of Christ. Our God is also committed to us treasuring Him above all things and learning to worship Him in everything. He is committed to revealing His beauty and worth to us. But our God is also often hidden beyond the obvious. Our God sometimes calls us to seek Him in places that we would not expect Him to be. I pray that you will seek and find God this summer and that you would seek Him with all your heart. Think about it... And the First Shall Be …. Second By Jane Siefers, Hospitality For the month of July, instead of having Communion and our traditional first Sunday lunch on July 5, we will enjoy food for the soul and body on the second Sunday of the month – July 12. And speaking of “traditional”, now that it’s officially summer, we’re going to indulge in one of our favorite summer traditions, the Salad Lunch. So mark your calendar for July 12, think about a salad you can bring to share, and plan to come with family and friends to share in the summer bounty! This ComING Sunday By Cait Kowal, Outreach As summer is in full swING, we are delighted to have a return visit from an engagING speaker! This Sunday, be sure to come hear the upliftING message. I’m speakING of course of …. The return of Reverend ING! She will be delivering the morning message on 7/5 while Pastor Ed is on vacation (Communion will be pushed back to 7/12). Reverend Ingrid Kalchthaler (Rev Ing), ordained minister, youth services librarian, and stand-up comedian is a delightful and talented speaker. An Epistle from Ed By Ed Cadwallader, Pastor

Life is full of both opportunities and challenges. That is one way to see it. The other way is to see life

is as a series of problems interspersed with fun and pleasure and rest. The thinking goes that if we can

just get through the next problem, get the frustration to stop, or solve the issue that plagues us, then we

have a better chance of experiencing what we want, which is fun and rest. But, more and more I am

seeing this approach as misleading and even wrong.

We all face storms and waves and scary moments. We all face things that we are unsure of. What will

the future hold? How will we find provision? What does God have in store for us? If we see these

questions as things to be solved so we can get to the life we always wanted, we miss what God wants

to show us in the moment, namely Gods self.

What if the beauty is found in the midst of the storm? What if Gods best for us is not getting us to a

place of rest and relaxation but in actually training us to enter the battle and find Him there with the

love and hope that we need? With Gods self?

Psalm 16:11 says, You make known to me the path of life, in your presence there is fullness of joy; at

your right hand are pleasures forevermore. No matter the storm, if we are in Gods presence, there is

joy and beauty. Sometimes, we find God in the midst of the crashing waves and the storm. Sometimes

the beauty that we seek is hidden in the midst of the trial that we are trying to escape or just get

through instead of in what we perceive to be the pleasure and satisfaction that we seek out of life.

    Gods way is better.

to be. I pray that you will seek and find God this summer and that you would seek Him with all your

    heart. Think about it...

And the First Shall Be . Second By Jane Siefers, Hospitality

Vacation Bible School is fast approaching! Superheroes of the Bible is

    scheduled for July 28, 29, 30.

We decided not to go with a bought package VBS program this year.

After Jennie Griffin, Carla Porterfield, Pastor Ed and I had a brainstorming

session, Ed came up with superhero possibilities and Carla created our

    unique program.

To date, full- and part-time adult leaders include

Ed & Pennie Cadwallader, Carla Porterfield, Jennie Griffin, Jane Siefers,

Jean Oppedal, Pam Hendrickson, Joe Bayer, Tanya Beaven and Norma Liebenguth. Youth helpers are Amy

Muhlenkamp, Ben Cadwallader, Chloe Coltharp and Mallory Riley. Jean Hipwell and Nancy Johnson have generously

donated money to help offset costs. And, Molly and Mac Coltharp will be using their artistic talents to transform our

church into a fun superhero hideout!

    Here is our wish list:

We still need a few more helpers youth and adult.

We need help after church on July 25 for set up and decorating.

We need to borrow 10 flashlights and one air horn.

plastic table cloths in primary colors.

Snack items; 4 heads broccoli crowns; 3 red peppers; 3 yellow peppers; 1 head celery; 2 pounds carrots, 2 containers

Ranch dip; 2 bags small pretzel sticks; 4 blocks of cheese; 2 bunches seedless grapes; 2 cantaloupes, 2 honeydew

    melons.

Please let us know if you are planning to donate something so that we dont have duplicates. If you can help with

anything else listed above, please contact Cait at (724) 935-3135 or Norma Liebenguth at (724) 934-0731.

Thank you all for your support!

    Missions By Jean Hipwell, Missions

Schools are out for summer and civic groups take a break, which means that

fewer groups donate to the food pantry and the shelves at NHCO are

becoming bare. However, 1,700 local families still need help. They always

need soup and canned ravioli, cereal and snacks, rice mixes, canned fruit/

veggies, juice, pasta and sauce and peanut butter and jelly. The Missions

    Committee greatly appreciates all contributions.

NHCO is also collecting back to school items such as backpacks, notebooks,

binders, pencils, rulers, etc. through July 31. There are donation boxes in the church library for these items.

Fall Events: By Jane Siefers, Hospitality

We are planning a special church service to welcome the community back to the church grounds on

Sunday, September 13 (the day after the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bradford Woods).

We are moving up the Blessing of the Animals to that date! We know it is traditional to bless

animals on the feast day of St. Francis, but last year we and our pets were shivering under the tent in

October. So, at the suggestion of Sister Elizabeth (pastor Eds beloved furry daughter), we are

following our protestant reformation roots and moving up the date to what we hope will be warmer weather!

Rally Day, normally the first Sunday after Labor Day, will be the following week, on September 20.

Sign-Up for the Centennial Committee By Cait Kowal, Outreach The church will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Borough of Bradford

Woods on Saturday, Sept.12. Please consider helping Doug and Amy Atkinson and

Norma and John Liebenguth on the anniversary committee. This committee will help

set up pre-parade snacks, such as muffins, and hot and cold drinks on Saturday

morning. This would be a great way to meet new people and have them get a feel for

our community church! Also, helpers are needed to help put up the large tent on Friday,

Sept. 11. A sign-up sheet is the church library or feel free to contact the church office.

Wedding Celebration By Cait Kowal, Outreach Please help me to congratulate Kate Griffith and Zachary Brehm who were married June 20! And

congratulations to proud parents: Ann and Chuck Brehm! May God bless them and their union.

Our Sincerest Condolences By Cait Kowal, Outreach Our hearts go out to the family of Ann Mackey, mother of Daphne Turner, who passed away

unexpectedly on 6/17 at the age of 85. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Turner family and

    Daphnes father, Bob Mackey.
