Horse Race / Shootout Thursday, July 3 & July 24 at 5:00 PM

Cost: $5 per person

This event is a great time! It’s almost full contact golf as your

competitors egg you on, sometimes in your backswing.

Two-person teams alternate their shots while the high-scoring

teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three

teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a “Win”

(1st Place), “Place” (2nd Place), and a “Show” (3rd Place).

Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for

this event; we like to have fun!

Peg ‘N KegMonday, July 21 at 4:00 PM

Only $5 per person

This putting contest is a favorite among our residents. Test

your putting skills on our ever changing 9-hole course and

quench your thirst by sharing a keg of beer.

Jim and Carmen MillerJim and Carmen Miller appear to be climate extremists. After31 years in Alaska with subzero lows, they moved to the landof eternal sunshine and triple-digit highs. “In Alaska, we hadnine months of winter and three months of bad weather,”

says Jim with a smile. “Actually, we both loved Alaska, but asthe years went by, the winters seemed to get ever longer. Asmy retirement neared, we knew it was time for a change. Wespent three years searching for the ideal place, and becameintrigued with the concept of adult communities. We visited

Del Webb communities in Nevada and Arizona and ultimately decided on Festival dueto its great amenities and friendly residents.”

Jim has enjoyed a highly diversied career. As a sailor, he worked in the eld ofairborne anti-submarine warfare aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. After theNavy, as a geophysicist, he moved to Alaska and spent many years exploring for anddeveloping oil and gas elds throughout the state. He eventually changed careers, becoming an environmental scientist/engineer, and subsequently retired as thesupervisor of the environmental department at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Carmen hada rewarding career working as a geriatric-certied RN at the largest medical facility in

Alaska.

Both Jim and Carmen were born in Germany. Jim was the son of an American Air Forceofcer and Carmen is a native German. After meeting in Alaska, they got married andhave a family of four children and one grandchild.

Since retiring, Jim and Carmen stay busy with Festival activities, including swimmingand using the tness center. Carmen is a whirlwind of activity, enjoying exerciseclasses, FABs, Mahjongg, volunteering for the Social Committee, and being a DelWebb Ambassador. Jim has authored ve books, including Howling Across Bridges and After the Purple Heart. “Life has been good in retirement,” says Carmen. “Jim andI denitely made the right choice to move here.”

We all know regular exercise does great things for thebody. Being active keeps the cardiovascular system

functioning effectively, maintains strength and leanmuscle mass and helps ght osteoporosis. In addition being physically t

reduces risk factors for Type II diabetes, many forms of cancer, heart diseaseand other chronic diseases. Equal to, or greater than, the physical benets of

exercise are the benets to the structure and function of the brain.

Exercise, in people of all ages, promotes the process of

making new brain cells-also called neurogenesis. Ashumans age, the hippocampus, part of the brain used

for forming and storing memory, shrinks in size. Inresearch with mice, time spent running on a wheel

showed development of new cells in the hippo-campus. In addition, these active mice performed

better on simple learning tasks than sedentarycohorts. In humans, the hippocampus has beenfound to be larger in those who are physically t.

And, exercise has been shown to decrease the riskfor dementia and even slow its progress.

Beyond just neurogenesis, exercise boosts the brain’s neurotrophic factors.

Neurotrophic factors are small proteins which promote the growth and survivalof brain cells. Research has shown exercise causes the release of brain-

derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which, in turn lead to enhanced memoryand learning. Research also shows a genetic link to BDNF. This may lead somepeople to get greater or lesser release of BDNF and see more or less benet

from it.

Recent research has also showed that inammatory chemicals created fromstored abdominal fat can cross the blood/brain barrier. This allows systemic

inammation to reach the brain and possibly lead to dementia.

Not only does exercise strengthen the blood/brain barrier, it also lowers levels

of systemic inammation and can help reduce belly fat in order to preventinammation from starting.

Just as exercise boosts the body’s endurance, it also boosts the brain’s endur-ance. In response to cardiovascular exercise, the body’s cells create additional“powerhouses” called mitochondria. This process is not limited to working

muscles. The brain’s cells also create more mitochondria. As a result, thebrain’s ability to operate at peak levels may be extended to a greater period oftime across the day.

A habit of regular exercise will build not just the body, but also the brain. Keep

moving and keep thinking.
