I‛m Just Sayin‛Recently I had to replace my glasses because Shelby, another one of the herd, saw them and thought, “Mmm, snack time”. I walked around the house looking for them with the very same gut wrenching, fearing for the worse sense of anticipation that Bruce Willis had in the fi rst Die Hard once he realized that it was him alone against the bad guys who held his wife and her co-workers hostage, and they could be around any corner.I walked out into the backyard and a very wounded refl ection caught my eye. I stopped in my tracks. My heart told me it was as I feared, but my mind stalled trying to imagine anything else but the most probable. I moved closer slowly. Once I clearly saw the level of devasta-tion that lay before, my knees grew weak. “No, it can‛t be. NOOOO. Why God, why?” I moved in on the carnage. There lay my glasses, so horribly disfi gured that not even Michael Jackson could have worn them. Don‛t judge me.With a tear in my eye, I picked them up and carried them into the house to see if there was any way to salvage them. They had suffered a very serious ordeal with our canine model wood chipper and it didn‛t look good. After about 20 minutes of re-bending ear stems and un-bending the main part of the frames so a human and not a tennis ball could wear them, I was able to at least get them on my head. My new canine art-work was complete and now somewhat usable.I tried not wearing them most of the time because one of the nose pads had also met its demise in the Friday the 13th Jason Horvees incident. Now it‛s time to get new specs. One of the large un-named “Supercenter” stores with a vision center right near the entrance has a special going on, glasses for $38. I think that sounds like a good deal since we rely on Amscot every month caring for the critters, thirty-eight
bucks is a bargain and I‛ll be able to see again. The other drivers will really appreciate that too.On the day of my appointment, there is some waiting time so I look around. The $38 glasses come with $9 frames. They have a small selec-tion since no one is going to really be able to keep the doors open selling $9 frames, unless you‛re sticking family pictures in them.As I‛m looking around, I‛m kind of appalled at how much frames can cost. They had several frames that were over $150 and they weren‛t even frames. They were the ear stems and nose bridge that screwed into the lenses. Thinking about someone buying them, I couldn‛t help but the feel that the frames weren‛t the only thing getting screwed. Don‛t judge me. Then I get to talk to someone about the lenses. For the other $29 you basically get a plastic clear windshield for your eyes. How cool would it be to just get a prescription windshield for your car? Then you wouldn‛t need glasses to drive. Anyway, back to the lenses. No tint, no scratch protection, not even real glass. Shouldn‛t they then be called ‘plastics‛?To get decent lenses that darken or “Transi-tion”, scratch resistant with no line bifocals, my $38 deal was now up to $253. That was with the $9 frames. I decided to forego the bifocals since I have Dollar Tree reading plastics already and managed to get the price down to $184. That‛s not counting the exam, because that was paid for separately.I think the fi rst part of the store name is accu-rate because they sure had my back up to it with the price of my new plastics. The vision center should have its own slogan. “Looking good is im-portant, but you‛ll ‘see‛ it‛s not cheap to do here”. I‛m just sayin‛.

Campside Treat Gets Revamped S’mores is one of the most popular desserts enjoyed around the campfi re and at cookouts. Now you can enjoy the fl avor of this delectable dessert without the fuss of toasting marshmallows over an open fl ame. S’mores history dates back to the early 20th century. While the actual recipe origin is unknown -- considering most camping recipes were passed down from generation to generation --the fi rst printed recipe for s’mores ap-peared in 1927 in the Girl Scout Handbook. S’mores were popular campside treats because of the portability of ingredients. It was easy to pack a bag of marshmallows, a box of graham crackers and a few bars of choco-late. The combination of sticky marshmallow, smooth, rich chocolate and crunchy graham crackers provides a perfect melding of fl avors. However, s’mores weren’t the fi rst pairing of these ingredients. Mallomar cookies and Moonpies also featured these ideal components. To make a delicious dessert that builds upon the s’mores fl avors and theme at your next summertime event, try this recipe for Frozen S’mores Cake. Frozen S’mores Cake 1quart vanilla ice cream 1 quart chocolate ice cream 10 or 12 graham cracker squares 1/4 cup melted butter 1/2 tablespoon sugar 1 jar of hot fudge 1 bag mini-marshmallows 2 tablespoons water Vegetable shortening Crush graham crackers in a zipper-lock bag or pulse in a food processor until made into crumbs. Add sugar and melted butter to the crumbs, mix and press into the bottom of a spring-form pan. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes, or until the crust browns a bit. Soften ice cream by letting it sit out of the freezer for a few minutes. Use a spatula or spoon to spread the chocolate ice cream over the cooled graham cracker crust. Spread desired amount of fudge topping over the chocolate ice cream. Then spread the softened vanilla ice cream over the fudge layer. Coat a microwave-safe bowl with a thin layer of shortening. Add most of the marshmallows, re-serving a few for garnish, and the water to the bowl. Microwave for about a minute to a minute and a half until the marshmallows are melted. Top the vanilla ice cream with the melted marshmallows. Place the cake in the freezer overnight to harden. When ready to serve, place the garnish marshmallows on top and drizzle with a little melted hot fudge. You can use a kitchen torch or a barbecue lighter to add a little browning to the garnish marshmallows to make them look like they were toasted over a fi re. Slice and enjoy quickly before it melts. This cake also makes a great alternative to a store-bought ice cream birthday cake.

Stay Healthy During Grilling Season
When it comes to warm weather parties, few ideas are more popular than a backyard barbecue. However, as enjoyable as such gatherings can be, they can cause problems as well, particularly if certain steps aren’t taken when it comes to cooking and handling food. *Clean your hands: Most backyard barbecues feature a host of standard fare when it comes to the menu. Burgers, steaks, hot dogs, and poultry are some of the most popular items. If you’re handling raw meat and poultry, wash your hands between touching the meat and then touching the poultry. *Don’t marinate outside: Any good grillmaster knows that the key to a successful barbecue is how well the food is marinated. If marinating food for an extended period of time, keep the food refrigerated while marinating. Also, be sure not to apply leftover marinade to food that’s already cooked. If you’re wary of wasting the marinade, boil it before applying to cooked food. The boil-ing will remove any bacteria left in the marinade by the raw meat or chicken. *Use a meat thermometer: Many grill chefs have heard cries that their food isn’t cooked well enough. Typically, this is heard after someone puts all the fixin’s on their food. That can make continuing to cook the food a messy ordeal. To avoid such instances, use a meat thermometer on burgers and steaks. In general, burg-ers should be cooked to 160 F, while meats such as steaks, roasts or london broil can be cooked to 145 F (medium rare) or 160 F (medium). Undercooked poultry can be especially dangerous, so cook to 170 F. * Change utensils and plates: Once the food is cooked or if you’re checking to see if it’s finished, don’t use the same utensils to remove or check food that you used to place it on the grill. Also, carry the uncooked food out on one plate, and present cooked food on another plate to avoid food contamination. * Heat a charcoal grill properly: If you prefer to use a charcoal grill, make sure the coals are heated for 20 to 30 minutes before you put any food on the grill. Coals should not still be black if you’re about to com-mence cooking. Instead, they should be gray. *For tailgaters, cool your food as well: Grilling out isn’t confined to summertime or backyards. Sports fans across the nation often take their grills to the stadium and tailgate before the big game. In such cases, make sure you bring a food-only cooler along. Keep food separated and refrigerated in the cooler and until it’s time to do some cooking.
