June saw the com- mencement of the women’s singles knockout competition which will continue to be played out over the next few weeks. The course is looking fantastic with the recent rainfall – even the dams are slowly filling. The course not only offers golfers a pleasant course to play on but is also well used by many townsfolk – often walking their dogs or out for a jog and it is nice to stop along the way and have a social chat! The ladies have been very busy planting hardy but attractive plants around several of the tees and it is nice to receive positive comments about the golf course being such an asset to the town. New members are always welcome anytime, we meet on Wednesdays at 9.15am in the club house and an open invita- tion is extended for anyone who wishes to come along and have a hit! Jan Harver (a Romsey Birdie) Ph: 0402 905982 Romsey Men’s Golf Report: Saturday May 22nd turned out to be a battle of the veterans with life member John Laing taking out the competition with 36 points while another veteran, Mick Nichols came in 2nd with 35 points. Only one of the three NTPs was awarded, 15 to club secretary, Kevin Dunne Saturday May 29th Monthly medal usually brings out large groups of golfers but the cold, wet weather and having a number of players attending the Lancefield Open greatly re- duced the field. The rain earlier in the week and again on Friday night, almost 30 mm, had greatly softened the fair- ways so relief, to a hand-span on the relevant fairway, was given. At the end of play two juniors were tied on 71, Ben Noel 89-18-71 and Dean Van DenHeuval 92-21-71, after the count-back Ben was awarded the May monthly medal. Saturday and Sunday, June 5th & 6th, saw the running of the 28th Romsey Open. On the Saturday it was the 4BBB pairs. A good field, 22 pairs, competed in men's, mixed and relative pair’s competition. Whilst there was some rain and wind during the afternoon it did not interfere with the quality of golf; some pairs posting excellent scores. Saturday's win- ners were; Men's pairs - Les Gaunt (8) & Mick Nicholls (26) 46 pts. Mixed pairs - R McLennan (11) & K Jekabson (28) 43 pts Relative pairs - S Wilkins (13) & M Thornton (3) 44 pts (A Romsey GC shield event) NTPs went to 1 - D Wright, 15 - S Walker and 16 - S Whelan. Sunday was the 24 hole Romsey Open (par 90). There were players from 12 clubs in the field, a number had trav- elled down from Murray Downs, just outside Swan Hill. The morning was relatively clear with only a few light show- ers, the recent rains (including 8mm on Saturday night) had made the fairways and greens quite soft so golfers were able to attack the pins. At 12.15 the groups began to come in for lunch and a chance to catch up with other golfers whom, in many cases, they only saw at this tournament. After some discussion playing conditions for the 2nd, 12 holes were changed and, because of mud on the balls, relief was given (to a hand-span) on the fairway played. There was again some light rain but that cleared quickly and the afternoon alternated between clear, sunny skies and over- cast, threatening clouds. A strong field saw A Grade; 0 - 8 handicap, B Grade; 9 - 16 handicap and C Grade; 17 - 36 handicap. Winners on the day were; NTPs; 1 - Dean van DenHeuval (Romsey), 8 - Andrew New- ell (Medway) and 9 - Paul Noel (Romsey). Longest drives were; A - Brett Lockens (Lancefield) B - Wayne Robb (Romsey) & C - Phil Drummond (Heathcote) C Grade stroke - Ben Noel (Romsey); 111-87 C Grade handicap - Dean Van DenHeuval; 118-90. B Grade stroke - Geoff Carson (Murray Downs) 105 - 93 B Grade handicap - Jarrad White (Romsey) 118 - 90 A Grade stroke - Lindsay Watts (Murray Downs) 98 - 96 2/3 A Grade handicap - Shelden Walker (Woodlands) 104 - 93 1/3 The three scratch winners each made brief acceptance speeches thanking the kitchen and bar staff and the Romsey Golf Club for putting on such an enjoyable event. There was a great atmosphere on course and in the rooms with many players moving tables to chat with others and much good natured cheering when the winners; golf and raffle, were an- nounced. Romsey Golf Club would like to thank Paul and Seamus Whelan and Ken Lambert and Brett Lockens from fellow Dalhousie clubs Woodend and Lancefield for their sup- port at this event. Saturday June 12fth the stroke competition began with a strong field and slightly overcast skies. Within half an hour light drizzle then steady rain began to fall but, as quickly as it had all started it stopped. The remainder of the afternoon was split between cold, dark skies and clear, still, sunny peri- ods. The recent rains saw relief given "through the green" so scor- ing was expected to be good. Whilst there was some excel- lent golf played only a few players were able to maintain this standard for the whole afternoon. The day's winner was Tony Lakey with a steady 94-27-67. Up and coming junior Dean Van DenHeuval continued his fine form with 81-19-62, however his scored was not allowed as his group played the course in the wrong order. NTPs went to 1 - G Watts, 15 - M Thornton and 16 - K Milner. Monday June 14th; Queen's Birthday Stableford competi- tion, 8.30 am hit off. This was a much more relaxed af- fair. The day was cool and clear; voices travelled well and there was much good natured banter between the different groups as they made their way around the course. The day's winner was Gary Watts (12) with 38 points. Gary also took out the only NTP; the 16th. Romsey/Lancefield & District Ambulance Auxiliary Saturday May 29 saw the Auxiliary’s major fundraiser for the year: a 2nd hand book fair. Literally thousands of books were donated which led to our faithful volunteers studi-ously sorting and categorising books in the days leading up to the sale. We had perfect weather to draw out the bookworms as the drizzly, cold weather was perfect for curling up in front of the fire with a book. Running from 9am til 1pm we aimed to raise enough money to purchase two small fridges for the ambulances to allow cold fluids to be car-ried in the ambulances. With the support of our local communities and people from as far afield as Gisborne and Wallan we raised the impressive total of $1800.00. The Romsey/Lancefield & District Ambulance Auxiliary would like to sincerely thank everyone who donated their preloved books and also those who came on the day to purchase books. All money raised by the auxiliary goes directly to purchasing equip-ment and resources to allow our ambulance paramedics to better service our local communities.

ST MARY’S EQUESTRIAN TEAM WINS INTERSCHOOLS! The newly formed St Mary’s Primary School Lancefield equestrian team com-peted in its first interschools competition on Saturday, and finished in FIRST PLACE! A total of 17 school teams competed in the Sacred Heart College Kyne-ton Interschools Combined Training Day at Kyneton’s pony club grounds. It was a fantastic effort by the girls, with St Mary’s being the only primary school team to finish in the placings and the FIRST EVER PRIMARY SCHOOL TEAM to win the competition, which has been running for 13 years! The winning team was the one which performed best in the two elements – dressage and show-jumping. All four team members – Sophie Conlan, Victoria Meyer, Laura Newn-ham and Madeleine Manton – registered good dressage scores and then regis-tered clear rounds in the showjumping. The girls received medals, sashes and a perpetual trophy plaque which will be able to be displayed at St Mary’s until next year’s event. 2nd was the Kilmore International School, 3rd and 4th were teams from Girton Grammar Bendigo teams and 5th & 6th were teams from Sacred Heart Kyneton. St Mary’s principal Mr Tony Falls congratulated the girls on their success. “In the first year of a team representing St Mary’s in this Equestrian event, it is a credit to the girls, their parents and of course their horses that they were able to not only be competitive but to win the Sacred Heart College shield,” Mr Falls said. “This will be proudly displayed at school for all to see. What a fantastic effort, girls. Congratulations to the St Mary’s Primary School Equestrian team.” The Equestrian Victoria Interschools events and pony club interschools events are competitions which bring riders to-gether at various venues across Victoria to compete as a team of 2-4 riders for points for their school. The highest-placed schools at the end of the calendar year win prizes and/or prizemoney for their school. Schools in our region which already take part include Romsey Primary School, Newham Primary School, Braemar College and Assumption College. They wear St Mary’s jumpers over a white shirt and dark green tie, as well as jodphurs, regulation boots and helmets. For further information, contact team manager Russell Manton on 0409 136 071 or St Mary’s Principal Tony Falls on 5429 1359.

Seventh-Day Adventist Church THANKING GOD..........thanking each other........... What a great idea from a wonderful Christian man to have a National Day of Thanksgiving (NDTG) in our Great Nation. Former Governor-General Sir Michael Jeffrey launched NDTG in Canberra six years ago and it always falls on the last Saturday in May. We made the most of this opportunity, and in two consecutive Sabbaths we had people from our commu-nity come to our church at our invitation, to be honoured and acknowledged. There was a lovely mixture of people: business owners, volunteers in different fields, medi-cal personnel, church leaders and others. Tokens of appreciation were given to them with a heartfelt " Thank You - we acknowledge your contribution in the community". Most of our guests stayed for the potluck lunch and fellowship. For this NDTG occasion about 150 dif-ferent tokens were given to people in and outside of church. Another big gathering at our church was the Concert given by "Gavin and the Sparrows". To see and hear such a compact family of nine who so happily share their music at home and abroad, was a shear delight. Thank you Chatelier Family. So much joy to share in our church family. Congratulations to the Pope family on the arrival of their second son. Our Sabbath School cradle roll is almost "bursting at the seams" with the little ones. It is such a delight to be a part of this vibrant church group comprised of 16 nationalities, worshiping together every Sabbath. Service times: Saturdays at 9:30AM> Sabbath School/Bible study 11:00AM Worship. Ad-dress: 18 Barringo Road, New Gisborne. All are welcome Gisborne Faith Radio 88.0FM

L2P comes to Gisborne The L2P learner driver mentor program is about to be launched in Gisborne, and program coordinator, David Norris, is looking for volunteers. Since the introduction of the compulsory 120 hours driving practice for learner drivers some young people have found themselves unable to clock up the hours due to lack of access to a car or supervisor. This VicRoads sponsored program utilises the skills of trained volunteers to supervise these disadvantaged learner drivers on a one to one basis. Project Officer David Norris said “that since the programs introduction in Kyneton ear-lier this year 11 young people have been matched with volunteers and have clocked up 5,500kms of practice in the program’s car”. Learner drivers receive a number of driving lessons with a registered driving school to gain basic car control skills before beginning driving sessions with a Volunteer. Throughout their time in the program learners receive additional professional lessons

to assess their progress and provide further training. Volunteers from the local community are provided with training by VicRoads to assist them with the management of the learner driver and to give them a better understanding of the L2P Program before being matched with a learner driver. All running costs, volunteer training, insurance and a car are provided by the program at no cost to the volun-teer. The car stationed at Gisborne will service students throughout the southern end of the shire.

If you are interested in helping please ring David on 5421 1631 or 0448 827 120

A university professor at a well known institution of higher learning challenged his students with this question. "Did God

create everything that exists?" A student bravely replied, "Yes he did!"

The professor answered, "If God created everything; then God created evil. And, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then we can assume God is evil."

The student became quiet and did not answer the professor’s hypothetical definition. The professor, quite pleased with him-self, boasted to the students that he had proven once more that the Christian faith was a myth. Another student raised his hand and said, "May I ask you a question, professor?" "Of course", replied the professor. The student stood up and asked, "Professor, does cold exist?"

"What kind of question is this? Of course it exists. Have you never been cold?" The young man replied, "In fact sir, cold does not exist. Absolute zero (-460 F) is the total absence of heat; and all matter becomes inert and incapable of reaction at that tem-perature. Cold does not exist. We have created this word to describe how we feel if we have no heat."

The student continued, "Professor, does darkness exist?" The professor responded, "Of course it does." The student replied, "Once again you are wrong sir, darkness does not exist either. Darkness is in reality the absence of light. You cannot measure dark-ness. A simple ray of light can break into a world of darkness and illuminate it. How can you know how dark a certain space is? You measure the amount of light present. Isn’t this correct? Darkness is a term used by man to describe what happens when there is no light present."

Finally the young man asked the professor, "Sir, does evil exist?" Now uncertain, the professor responded, "Of course, as I have already said. We see it everyday. It is in the daily examples of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and vio-lence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.

To this the student replied, "Evil does not exist, sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love present in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat, or the darkness that comes when there is no light." The professor sat down.... The young man’s name -- Albert Einstein

Romsey Primary School News Learning in the New Building Last week the year 4/5s, 5s and 6s were excited to be moving into the new building. Teachers have spent consider-able time moving and organising their classrooms. They look fantastic and everyone is enjoying the flexibility it of-fers. With the large central space there are many opportunities for flexible groupings. Presently the IT infrastructure supplied by the government is not installed. This consists of a number of wireless access points, 5 interactive whiteboards and 2 printers. Our IT person has installed some temporary devices so staff and students can access the school intranet and the inter-net. It is hoped the IT infrastructure will be installed by the beginning of next term. The new casual furniture including colourful ottermans and lilypads offers a range of options for teachers and students to work in cooperative groups. We look forward to official opening ceremony in late August / early September. The classes in the new building are Year 4/5 Mr Tannenberg Room 15 Year 5 Mrs Chrystiuk Room 16 Year 5 Mrs Emond Room 17 Year 6 Mrs Ellis Room 18 Year 6 Mr McPherson Room 19 Year 6 Miss Romaszko Room 20

Romsey Students Sponsored by

Bendigo Bank We were proud to be selected by the Bendigo Bank and Essendon Football Club to be sponsored to participate in the Bendigo Bank Community Cup. This involved 25 year 6 students who travelled to Windy Hill, toured their Hall of Fame and played in a lightning cup against seven other schools. After a BBQ meal they travelled to the MCG to enjoy the AFL match Essendon vs Hawthorn. Our players did exceptionally well winning all their games and went onto the grand final and ended runners up. I re-ceived a very complimentary phone call from Rod

Browning the Manager of the Lancefield / Romsey Bendigo Bank on the outstanding be-haviour and sportsmanship of our students. He was with the group for the day’s events and found the students polite, well be-haved and excellent role models. Congratulations to the teachers Georgia Romaszko, Vanessa Johnston and Simone Wood who accompanied them and students who were privileged to attend this event. Joan Gibbs Principal

Church Council Chairperson: Noel Shaw - 5429 5509

Secretary: Jeni Clampit - 5429 5480

You are most welcome to come to the Romsey Uniting Church Services and share in fellowship and worship...

Thank you to everyone who came to the Romsey Uniting Church Adult Fellowship Winter Luncheon on Wednesday 9th June and made the day such a success. We all enjoyed a lovely lunch and the Guest Speaker – Rev. Bruce Tudball was very interesting and gave an entertaining talk on time working in Ka-zakhstan. It was a very enjoyable day. Minister away in July Rev. Dr Avril Hannah-Jones will be away in Europe from the 5th of July to the 1st of August. However, services will be held as normal, and the Rev. Lorraine Saultry has agreed to conduct any funerals that may occur during July. Ecumenical Service. On Sunday 1st August, 2010 at 10am a combined Ecumenical Service for all the churches in Romsey and Lancefield will be conducted at the Living Word Church in Mitchell Court, Romsey. “ Love is a Wild Bird”. (Thoughts for the day!) ‘Proverbs 3:13 Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profit able than silver and yields better returns than gold.

I made a startling discovery the other day. It may not change the world but it is this: snails don’t have a reverse gear. I went to the greenhouse to water my tomato plants. The watering can was heavy, full of water, but when I picked it up and lifted it, only a trickle of water came through. I put the can down, unscrewed the spout and held it up to the light. It was almost totally blocked by something dark. I poked a can down through the narrow end and out dropped a snail. A dead snail.

Attracted by the damp it must have crawled in and up the spout. Unfortunately watering can spouts taper and get smaller nearer

the outlet. The snail went in as far as it could go, then got jammed. And that was that. There was no room to turn and the snail had no reverse gear.

It made me think. Never put yourself into a situation you can’t back out of. Bad grammar, but you see what I mean. People argue and, in the heat of the moment make statements they can’t justify, and then find they can’t back away. Too embarrassing. They get aggressive, which makes things worse, and before you know it World War Three’s broken out. Or nearly so.

Take time to listen to what the other person is saying. Put your-self in their place and don’t push too hard or you may get stuck without any chance of backing away. Leave room for under-standing and keep the channels of communication unblocked. Remember the snail.

“Lord, it may be asking a lot of you, but help me t o think before I speak, and then not to say too much.

Do You Like To Write? Have you thought of writing your experiences, family history, stories, penning a poem or two, or embarking on the great Australian novel, but don’t know where to start? Perhaps you have written reams that languish unread or are you a pub-lished author? THE ROMSEY WRITERS’ GROUP Meets on the second Friday of each month at 9.45am to 11.45am at the Romsey Community House in the Hub, Main Street, Romsey. We meet to share our work and ideas and to gain and provide feedback and encouragement in a friendly and supportive environment. You are welcome to join us. For further information call Lila on 5429 3732 or just come along. Our next meeting is on July 7th.

Prep Enrolments for 2011 Prep enrolments for 2011 are now open. Enrolment packages can be picked up from Romsey Kindergarten, Lula Mays or the school. Parents need to bring the enrolment forms to the office along with your child’s birth certificate and immunization record. If you know of a fam-ily whose first child is begin-ning school next year it would be helpful to inform them of this information. Please enrol early.

Fun and Fundraising On Thursday the 17th of June the Student Council ran a Footy theme/bad hair dress up day to raise funds to support Fredrick, our sponsored child from Kenya. We had many wonderful hair designs and football outfits from children and staff! Thank you to those participants who donated a gold coin. We raised over $ 300 which means we now have enough money to sponsor Fredrick for a year. Everybody had a lot of fun with the parade in the gym to display their outstanding costumes and hairdos. Thankyou children, teachers and parents for supporting the Student Council and Fredrick.

THINKING OF SELLING? Romsey Fire Brigade

Appeal for 2010

The volunteer firefighters from the Romsey Fire Brigade again need the community to help out by contributing to the 2010 fundraising appeal. The objective of the appeal is to assist in the purchase of equipment items and also the ulti-mate replacement of the community owned fire tanker. “The last fire season was reasonably quiet for us and I guess the Brigade has not been foremost in people’s minds this year, but we really do need their help, said Romsey Fire Brigade First Lieutenant and appeal organiser, Nicholas Needham. “We would be very happy to not turn out at all, but that rarely happens for us. Just because we were not attending the larger campaign type fires this year, does not mean that we have not been prepared,” he said. “The community response to this years appeal has been somewhat lukewarm and it is set to finish at the end of June, so if you were contemplating making a donation please do so soon”, he continued. The Brigade is also very keen to hear from anyone who may be interested in joining their local CFA brigade. “We need people, especially those who might be available to respond during the day. We have had a turnover in volunteers recently and this places even greater demands on those remaining operational firefighters. Even if you don’t wish to commit to being an active firefighting member of the Brigade, we also have other roles available. You will be provided with all the necessary training and as you further enhance your skills on the job, you can expect to be supervised at any turnouts by an experienced mentor. You commit as much as you feel comfortable in doing. Remember, CFA is not just involved with fighting fires but also rescue operations, educational programs, community safety and many more local community activities. You can choose to volunteer as an equipment assistant, a treasurer or one of the many other CFA volunteer roles and give back to your community. Benefit from being part of Victoria's largest volunteer team. Meet new people, learn new skills and involve your whole family. We will be holding recruit training in the coming months so join now, don’t wait until the middle of the fire season. Become a CFA volunteer today and make a difference. For information on the Romsey Fire Brigade, see www.romseyfirebrigade.org.au or telephone 54 296054 For CFA volunteer firefighter information free call Volunteer Hotline 1800 232 636 or email [email protected]. A Serenade to Music The Gisborne Singers this year celebrate thirty years of music making in the Macedon Ranges. To mark this anniversary, all music lovers, friends and associates of the choir are warmly invited to a special concert “A Serenade to Music” to be given on Sunday 25 July 2010 at the Church of the Resurrection, Macedon. Started in 1980, with eight singers meeting in a private house in New Gisborne, the choir now has around thirty-five ac-tive members (aged from fifteen to eighty) who rehearse weekly at Holy Cross Primary School, New Gisborne. The Gisborne Singers present three major concerts each year, mostly in the Macedon Ranges, in venues such as St. Ambrose and St. Mary’s Churches, Woodend; St. Paul’s Church, Kyneton; and the Uniting Church, Gisborne. The choir’s connection with The Church of the Resurrection, Macedon is particularly close. The Church of the Resurrec-tion was built to replace two local churches lost in the Ash Wednesday fires, and was designed at least in part to host music performances. From its dedication in 1987 the “Church of the Res” was for many years the regular performing venue for the Gisborne Singers, so it is fitting that for this celebratory concert the choir comes “home”. It is also fitting that Barry Firth, the choir’s inaugural musical director, returns as guest conductor. Barry has also chosen the program for this concert. “I wanted to showcase the choir’s capabilities,” he said, “and also emphasise its connectedness with the local commu-nity. So I have chosen beautiful choral music by Vaughan Williams, Brahms, Copland and Percy Grainger. Some of which will be sung a capella. Also a choral medley of songs from “The Phantom of the Opera” which will be popular. Other pieces will be performed by Joseph Kinsela, a former Gisborne Singer, and the Quartet Conspiritus, a new string ensemble from the Macedon Ranges.” Tickets are $30 adults/$25 concession. For bookings and enquiries please contact Liz on 5426 2467 or [email protected] Tickets will be available at the door unless they are all presold.

LOCAL SCOUTS GET FUNDRAISING BOOST Local Scouts have helped raise $493,000 through Victorian Scouts’ annual monster raffle. Macedon Ranges District is part of the Lerderderg Region which stretches from Essendon to Kyneton and Woodend to Werribee. Lerderderg Region raised over $51, 000 and Macedon Ranges Scout Groups, including 1st Gisborne, 1st Kyneton, 1st Macedon, 1st Romsey and 1st Woodend, raised $10,076.00 of the total. Macedon Ranges as a whole was one of the top fundraisers in re-gional Victoria with individual groups making an outstanding effort:

1st Gisborne raised $3880.00 1st Woodend raised $2840.00 1st Macedon raised $1740.00 1st Romsey and 1st Kyneton raised almost $1000.00 each.

Congratulations to all the Scout Groups. Each of the Scout Groups in our District are now making plans for how they are going to spend the money they raised, with new camping equipment and special camps being high on their lists. Macedon Ranges District Commissioner Neill Coker says the reve-nue raised through the Scouts’ annual raffle helps local Groups continue their operations -- but the lessons learned by the young people involved are just as valuable. “Through efforts like the Victo-rian Monster Raffle – and local efforts like sausage sizzles and other events – Scouts learn how to set goals and achieve them. “The “learning for life” philosophy of the Scout program encourages young people toward independence … raising their own funds, planning their own activities, planning and preparing their own meals, and much more. Young people in Scouting particularly enjoy the exciting trips they make, or appreciate the adventurous gear they use, because they have helped earn it.”

Tell us the story about your favourite piece of fabric

Inspired by the signature quilt at the Kyneton Museum that was created last century, artist Tamara Marwood is seeking donations from the community of fabrics from their own life story. Tamara will patchwork your donated fabrics in her own stylized way and the items will be on display at the Museum during the 2010 Daffodil Festival later this year. To be part of this project you need to submit your fabric, your name and contact details, plus up to 200 words telling us about the story of your fabric. Items can be dropped off at the Kyneton Museum during opening hours (Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 11am-4pm) or sent to Kyneton Museum, PO Box 151, Kyneton 3444 by Friday, 23 July 2010. Your fabric might be a piece of your lucky socks or the dress you wore to your first dance. Each story will be displayed along with the patchwork so visitors to the Museum can find out what your fabric means to you. For further information, contact Robyn Till on 5422 0319 or Tamara Marwood on 0428 304 544.

MORE SUCCESS FOR COWBOYS AND ANGELSMORE SUCCESS FOR COWBOYS AND ANGELSMORE SUCCESS FOR COWBOYS AND ANGELSMORE SUCCESS FOR COWBOYS AND ANGELS Cowboys and Angels Competition Line Dance team consisting of 24 competitors travelled to East Malvern on the June long weekend to compete in the Southern State Line Dance Champi-onships. Once again the squad came away the most successful team with some 30 medals over the two days of competition. Many very proud Romsey parents and families gathered and supported the young girls and local mothers competing in many of the 44 sections offered. Other teams competing were from Melbourne and surrounding districts and also one from Junee (NSW), who proved to be our major competitor throughout the weekend. The competitions bring together many people from many differ-ent walks of life, of different ages and who would not normally meet. The competitors learn many new personal skills such as self confidence, personal satisfaction, dance increases fitness, and also improves social skills. They learn the ability to perform in front of huge crowds, along with different dancing combinations ie: duo’s, trio’s, small group and large groups and different styles of line dance ie: waltz, social, open and free style. Most of all, the competitors have fun and enjoy themselves immensely. A huge thank you to our teachers Kate & Stacey for their continued support, patience and encouragement throughout the year. We are now practicing for our next competition to be held in Sydney in early October 2010 and we look forward to shar-ing our success at that competition with you as well.

“Tulla” the history & his stories --

Neville Barwick

If you were one of those enjoying the ducted heating which had taken the chill off the Lancefield Courthouse on June 8, you will remember it as a very good night. Subject of the talk to the Historical Society, was “Tullamarine

– its history and his stories”, and there were some great yarns. Planning for the airport began in the early fifties - the decision to build was announced by Prime Minister Menzies in 1962 and John Gorton opened the international in 1971, some twenty years later. It’s now the busiest export and domestic freight airport in Austra-lia and in 2009 handled 25 million passengers – second only to Sydney. With Sydney at capacity, Melbourne can double with two new runways and remain viable until 2050. Our member, Neville Barwick was the architect responsible for construction of the airport building works. While description of the structures and the facilities was fascinating – it was “his sto-ries” that engaged the audience – ask anyone who attended about the “war with Norm Gallagher and the BLF” … or the “unscheduled visit of her Majesty the Queen … or “Ronald Biggs” … or the afternoon “scrap insulation went up in flames”.

Continuing “Back to Romsey—1928” from the Romsey Examiner.

(After the civic reception at the railway station, attended by fully 1,000 persons, festivities continued all weekend…) “To see the town on Friday, and again on Saturday morning, suggested the agency of a magician’s wand, so complete was the transformation. To the architect and builders, of the arches, of which there were four altogether, a special need for praise is due…” “It was particularly delightful to see amongst many familiar faces those of George Seymour and his sister Alice (Mrs Wade), Miss Cain, and ex-Superintendent McKinnon, all of whom went to the Romsey School about 70 years ago. Mr Sey-mour and his sister are children of the late Sidney Seymour (d. 1913), the ‘grand old man’ of Romsey, who settled here before the aborigines left, and lived to the ripe old of age of 100 years…” “After tea the Romsey Horticultural Society’s Show at the Me-chanics’ Institute was the meeting place, and fully 500 people were present when Mr W.G. Gibson, M.H.R., performed the opening ceremony. Mr Gibson...while president here interested himself in all public movements and was chairman at the nota-ble opening of the present Mechanics’ Institute. He was also president of the West Bourke Agricultural Society in its balmy days, and he regretted to see that the body had receded from its proud position as one of the leading societies of its kind in the state. Romsey had a wide reputation for the productivity of its soil, its scenic beauty, its healthy climatic conditions, and like all other visitors, he had a great love for the district…”

Alan will go on to represent St. Mary’s at the State Champi-onships at Bundoora on the 13th July. What a fantastic ef-fort!!!

St Mary’s Primary School Equestrian Team The Equestrian Team competed in their first competition

on Saturday May 29th against 16 other school teams including Assumption College, Sacred Heart College, Girton Grammer and Braemar College. St Mary’s was the only Primary school to fin-ish in the placings and the FIRST PRIMARY SCHOOL EVER to win

the competition which has been running for 13 years. What a fantastic effort from Madeleine Manton, Laura Newham, Victoria Meyer and Sophie Conlan. Confirmation Last Sunday at 11:30 and 2:00 pm t students received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Tim Costelloe. The Bishop was warm and enthusiastic about the celebra-tions and he commented on how he likes coming to Lance-field. Thank you to the parents and students for the re-spectful ceremony. Thanks to Ms McCarthy for a job well done in preparing the students and the liturgy. S.R.C : Football Day On the Friday 4th June the students wore their football gear and brought a gold coin donation for the Bahay Tuluyan agency which assists poverty stricken children in the Phil-ippines. This day raised $184 and was a lot of fun. We had a line up in the teams and unfortunately the Bombers and the Magpies had the most supporters at St Mary’s.

There is a Business Buzz in the Air! There is an air of anticipation and some excitement in RRBATA at present with, as reported last month, the opening of several new shop front businesses in town. This has been compounded by the purchase of the Romsey Stockfeeds site by the Lancefield and Romsey Community Bank. There are plans to commercially develop the site including building a new bank premises. Sud-denly, an air of optimism creeps in to benefit the local commu-nity and visitors to the town. Romsey Region Represented at Business and Tourism Meetings RRBATA again represented Romsey’s business and tourism interests at the Tourism Macedon Ranges’ (TMR) meeting held at Gisborne Peak Winery on 15th June. In addition to representa-tives from other BATAs and tourism related groups (e.g. Mac-edon Ranges Vignerons Association, Macedon Ranges Accom-modation Association), Cr. Neil Manning was also in atten-dance. The main focus of the discussion related to the draft MRSC budget and its tourism implications. There was also an opportunity for BATAs to report and discuss local issues to the meeting. TMR is encouraging its members to commit to advanc-ing the Macedon Ranges as a whole as well as their own local interests. Romsey’s continued presence at these meetings is vital if our position in the Macedon Ranges business and tourism landscape is to be consolidated. Parking Review and Our Local Commitment At the above mentioned TMR meeting, Cr. Manning reported that the MRSC was still undertaking its review of parking con-siderations and implementation for new businesses. He said there was no timeline for this review. RRBATA expressed its request that BATAs and other relevant stakeholders be con-sulted and involved in this review process. Also, so as to avoid an inaccu-rate perception of our customer parking availability, RRBATA would like to suggest to all businesses that – in the interest of their own and other busi-nesses – employees park away from the immediate vicinity of the business where possible. This frees up space for potential customers, thus avoiding the potential suggestion of a “parking shortage” in Romsey!

Business Breakfast Plans RRBATA is currently planning a business breakfast to be held in August (date to be soon confirmed) at Soltan Pepper Restau-rant. This will be a free event for interested RRBATA members as part of their membership package. RRBATA is committed to innovative networking opportunities for its members, knowing that a connected business community is an effective business community. Plastic Bag Free Survey As previously reported, RRBATA is exploring the notion of supporting Romsey working toward “plastic bag free status” as several other towns in the Macedon Ranges have done. This survey will be distributed in July, so start collecting your thoughts on this issue. Please feel free to email any preliminary comments (for or against) about this to [email protected] Romsey Online is having a Birthday! At the end of July, Romsey Online - the Romsey website www.romsey.org.au - will be having its first birthday. So as this wonderful resource can continue to be relevant and fresh, RRBATA wants your feedback. Please email comments (good and bad) to [email protected]. Don’t forget, ANYONE CAN BE A REPORTER! Whether it is sporting results, photos, reports on events etc, the website is waiting for your “news”. Please ensure a note of consent from people featured in any photographs accompanies your submis-sions. Remember, the website is only as good as the information fed to it at [email protected]. Thinking About Membership? RRBATA is only as good as its membership. Consider being a beneficiary of the exciting initiatives planned ahead by becom-ing a RRBATA member so as you can be heard!!
