President’s Message

Paula Austell President

I am honored to be Northwood Woman’s Club president for 2020-2021. I look forward to an exciting

and interesting year of many “unknowns” and “what-ifs.” I know the great organization we are

will continue to support our annual beneficiaries, community service projects and activities with style

and grace. Our beneficiaries are counting on us even more now than ever. With the pandemic surging

I wanted to let the membership know that your board of directors is working hard at finding new and

safe ways to keep our membership engaged, whether it be virtually, in-person or both. Our major

fundraising and alternative fundraising events have been planned. This year, as in last year, will be

especially challenging. Don’t give up hope!

The board of directors met on June 29th with approvals to continue our financial institution as North

Dallas Bank, and CPA firm as Whitley Penn, LLP. The following committees were presented and

approved: Bylaws, Communications, Philanthropy and our Beneficiary Liaisons. Cathy Dial,

Community Service Projects Director, is working with their respective chairpersons on how NWC

may still participate in volunteer opportunities during the pandemic.

Jan Folmar, Board Development Director, is seeking nominations from the general membership for

three at-large positions on her committee. Qualifications are: served on the Board at least one year

and not currently on this year or next year’s Board. Please submit your nominations to Jan at

[email protected] no later than August 1, 2020. 1.

Even during this exceptionally challenging year our members and community supporters rose to the

occasion and made it possible for our beneficiaries to receive even more than what they were

expecting. We gave away $232,989.28!

Bonton Farms - $62,000

Bryan’s House - $62,000

Emily’s Place - $22,000

Dallas Life Homeless Shelter - $40,000

NWC Endowed Scholarship at UT Dallas - $19,000

NWC Scholarship Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas - $37,213.28

Network of Community Ministries for Tornado Relief - $10,000

North Dallas Shared Ministries for Tornado Relief - $10,000

Community Service Projects totaled $10,776

The club’s cumulative total given away is $6,259,029. WOW!

In closing, I would love to meet you, our member, so four times this year I will be hosting a “Coffee

with the President” at La Madeleine’s, 1320 W. Campbell Road, Richardson. I’m inviting up to 10-12

members to join me for coffee and danish. The dates will be September 17, 2020; November 19,

2020; January 21, 2021 and March 18, 2021. If you are interested please email your request to me

We are excited to announce that Northwood Womans Club Annual School Supply Drive is officially underway! The New Member Class will be coordinating the collection of school supplies this summer for 3 local elementary schools. The designated schools are Mitchell Elementary, Rose Haggar Elementary, and The King’s Academy. Mitchell and Haggar are located in Plano ISD and are designated as Title 1 schools, with greater than 50% of enrolled students meeting low-socioeconomic criteria. The King’s Academy is in its second year of operation and serves children Pre-K through 2nd Grade, in the Bonton neighborhood near Bonton Farms. This school is private and depends primarily on charitable support. Below is a “Wish List” of supplies requested from the Principals of these schools. They are grateful for being our chosen recipients during this very unique and needy time. At this point, please plan to deliver your school supplies during our NWC August General Meeting (Thursday, 08/27/2020). However, due to COVID-19, our events of August may look different, so please stay tuned for an update on drop-off procedures.

In the meantime, shop in person, shop online, shop for curbside pickup, just shop, shop, shop!

The next page has the school supply list so you will be ready when supplies go on sale. Just copy the page and shop from the list.

Plans for Kaleidoscope 2021 have been finalized and our big event will take place on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020. The venue will be held at the Hotel Renaissance Addison, Emerald City will provide the entertainment and the décor will be provided by Shane Walker Designs.

Kay and I want to offer a big “thank you” to all of our volunteers from last year who agreed to continue working on K21 in November. Without the tireless work of our volunteers each year, Kaleidoscope wouldn’t be the success that it has become year after year!

Thanks to all of you who have purchased tickets for our Neiman Marcus raffle. It will be held on the evening of our K21 event and tickets will be on sale at our June meeting or by contacting Carmyn Neely. Ticket sales will continue until the evening of our gala, but be sure to buy yours now before we sell out!

Of course, we will continue to accept items for our silent or live auction over the summer. Please contact Dianne Hart for information as to which committee member will be happy to receive your donation.

Wine pull donations will resume at our August meeting. All previous donations are being carefully stored until our gala by our wonderful chairpersons, Marla Golden and Diana Harris.

Be sure to put Friday, November 20th on your calendar so that you’ll be able to attend this wonderful fundraiser! After our months of being quarantined, I’m sure that we’ll all be eager for an evening of dinner, dancing and socializing!

We hope that you all will have a wonderful summer, and that you’ll continue to think of how you can help the fundraising efforts of NWC. Our K21 gala can only be successful with the help of each and every one of our members and that means YOU!

See you in August!

THE CHANGE WILL BE POSTED IN THE COMMUNIQUE.

My Program Chairs, Pat Wicker and Carey Austin (Carey has since had to resign due to personal issues), along with incoming President, Paula Austell, worked really hard the months of March, April and May securing venues and programs for the coming NWC year 2020-2021. All the programs and venues are secured, and we think we have a great lineup of speakers. There will be some familiar venues as well as a few new ones.

Hopefully we will be able to go forward with the programs, and are working on alternative plans if we are faced with delays or shutdowns due to COVID-19. Shannon Burton, who was one of the Program Chairs last year, has graciously agreed to step in and continue this year as co-chair with Pat.

Jan Ledbetter and Nancy Dent, the Alternative Programs Chairs, have their speakers and venues in place, as well.

We are looking forward to a great year for NWC and looking forward to, hopefully, seeing you all again soon.

Please notify Elizabeth Jenkins at [email protected] if there are any changes to your name, address, phone number or email address. The change will be posted in the Communiqué.

COMMUNITY SERVICE 3rd VP Betsy Winkle

Community Service Projects Cathy Dial, Director

Community Service sign-ups are typically held at the August General Meeting. Considering the challenges related to COVID-19, the sign-up process may be a little different this year, as well as how we can support our non-profit partners with volunteer hours. Details of the sign-up process will be provided in August.

Sack Hunger Food Drive

A date has been set for our annual Sack Hunger event next spring. Please mark your calendars accordingly: Thursday, April 15, 2021 Church of the Incarnation 12727 Hillcrest Rd. Dallas, TX 75230

Additional information about this event will come later.

Dallas CASA POP 2020 Due to the continuing contagion of COVID-19, Dallas CASA has made the difficult decision to change the annual Parade of Playhouses event at NorthPark to a virtual event. Several of the playhouses will still be on display at NorthPark, but all ticket sales will be done online. This is hardly the way in which Dallas CASA wanted to celebrate its 25th year of POP, but some things are obviously beyond human control.

We hope that you will continue to support Dallas CASA with your online donations this year for our wonderful playhouses. Please check out dallascasa.org for additional information on the playhouses and how to purchase tickets.

Thank you so much for your support of this wonderful organization and the vulnerable children who benefit from your generosity! Hopefully, by next year, we’ll be able to return to our normal activities and POP will again be held at NorthPark!
