President’s Message by Vicki SchrammGallery Welcomes New Intern!

Our Gallery’s new 2017 – 2018 fiscal year is off to a great start with a new oak floor, exciting new plans, and a new Gallery Intern, Jonathan Lindblom! Johathan comes to us from Whittier College with a background in marketing. We are confident that Jonathan’s mind for marketing will match-up well with the skills and enthusiasm of those who serve on our Gallery’s Marketing Committee.

The Gallery’s marketing strategies have changed over the years. During the 1940s hundreds of penny postcards were mailed out announceing new exhibits and programs.

In September of 1950, the first issue of the newsletter, Sketches was printed because the busy gallery needed more space to communicate with artist members and patrons. For a few years it seemed that a gallery website would take care of our needs. Now it is time to stretch beyond our newsletter and our website, and expand our horizons even more.

A Marketing and Publicity Committee is just what we needed. We can never stop learn-ing and moving forward, if we expect to have this grand historic gallery continue to be the viable, thriving arts destination that it was meant to be.

GraceNakamura

By David W. Bailey

Grace Nakamura has passed away due to complications from pneu-monia. She was 90 years old and a true “Shizen no Chikara”, or “Force of Nature”, active in all facets of life to the end.Grace was born Aiko Grace Shinoda in Los Angeles, California on Feb. 18, 1927.Her daughter Linda said “She started drawing as soon as she could hold a pencil”. Graces one brother, Larry Shinoda and only sibling designed the 1963 Stingray Corvette. Artistic talent runs through both sides of her family.Unfortunately during WWII Grace (then 15) and her family were sent first to Santa Anita Race Track and eventually to the reloca-tion camp at Manzanar. She was later released back to the West Coast to go to college, graduated from the University of Redlands, earning a master degrees in teaching, fine arts and counseling at Whittier College.Grace met Yosh Nakamura after the war and they were married in 1950; they moved to Whittier in 1956.Grace was very active in speaking out about the anti-Muslim rhetoric that had become popular in the last Presidential election. Her family said “she was giving talks all last year because she said history is repeating itself”. She warned “be suspicious of those who create a climate of fear”.Among her many community involvements Grace served as a trustee of the Whittier Public Library, a member of the Audubon Society, The Hillcrest Congregational Church in La Habra Heights, the Whittier Art Association, and the Rio Hondo Symphony Association. On a personal note, Grace was a friend and a supporter to me and to many more. I think I first met her when her son Joel and I graduated from East Whittier Jr. High School. Our sympathies go out to the family, husband Yosh Nakamura; daughter Linda Nakamura Oberholtzer; son Daniel Nakamura; daughter-in-law Paula Stinson; son Joel Nakamura; daughter-in-law Kathleen Nakamura; and grandchildren, Poloma and Kai Nakamura.Grace's memorial service is July 16th at 2pm at the Hillcrest Congregational Church 2000 West Road, La Habra Heights. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the “Hillcrest Congregational Church” with a notation “Grace Nakamura Memorial”.

Honoring Our New Life Members by Vicki SchrammIt takes a large group of volunteers to keep the Gallery running smoothly and looking its best. These people contribute long hours, creative thought, great patience, and determination. Among our 10 Board members and 7 Committees, we would like to honor three very special people with Life Memberships. Each of these new Life Members has a deep and long-standing commitment to the Gallery. We are grateful for all of their work and dedication.

Joann LiboltJoann first joined the Gallery in 1993. She has given years of volunteer service, known especially as “a true exhibition person”. She has served on the Gallery's Exhibition Committee for many years.• She establishes contracts with artists, installs shows with the committee, and she’s great at adjusting the lights, just right.• She has incredible knowledge about exhibitions, and the running of a gallery, and is also involved with the Ten Women Gallery in Santa Monica. • With her knowledge, Joann was instrumental in writing our Gallery’s Volunteer Desk Manual.• She is extremely generous and supportive, in a quiet sort-of way. Countless times when the Gallery needed something, she would be off to multiple hardware stores with the words, “I’ll pick one up”. Often times, we never saw the receipts.• She was instrumental in preparing the Gallery to reopen after the installation of the new oak floor. • Joann is known for her knowledge, expertise and ability to follow through.

Donna Larson Donna is known for her dependability. When you need her…she is there. We are grateful for the countless ways she has supported the work of the Gallery. She exhibited at the Gallery during the 1960s, but became really involved after she retired. She has been a member since 1993. • Donna has served on the Gallery’ s Exhibition Committee for more than 10 years.• She has used her gardening talents countless times to help with planting and care of the Gallery’s front yard.• She has been a wonderful, loyal, Wednesday Volunteer Desk Person.• Donna is especially known as a gifted watercolorist who is an award winner in our Whittier Art Gallery exhibits as well as the Hillcrest Festival of Fine Arts, Mid Valley Arts League, the Chaffey Community Museum of Art, and the Pomona Valley Art Association.• She is generous with her talent and has created beautiful paintings that have been used on many of the Gallery’s show cards.

Denise Hynes For more than 20 years, Denise has helped the Gallery by identifying what needed to be done, and then coming to fill in the gaps. • She has served as the Gallery’s Desk Person, and she used her knowledge to organize and train our Wednesday Volunteers.• Denise came to the Gallery’s rescue by sharing her computer knowledge during the time we were trying to get the Gallery on-line, and no one knew what to do next.• She has a great talent for providing hospitality, and has blessed us will many kinds of wonderful home cooked refreshments at pot luck dinners and receptions, for years on end.• When we were faced with the task of raising over $15,000 to replace the Gallery’s crum-bling, original oak floor, Denise organized a Jewelry Show with a live auction, and much to everyone’s delight, raised the largest early donation of $850. By the way, she was the auction-eer. She has that talent too. She organized a second Jewelry Show and auction the following year and donated even more to the Floor Fund.• Denise has had major involvement in all aspects of work with the Board of Directors and has served in every Board position except President.
