Dear Brothers and Sisters,At our Convention on June 16

in Mansfield, the delegates voted that the 2013 State Con-vention should be held at the Villa Roma Resort in New York. We will be negotiating with Villa Roma to insure that our Lodges and delegates get the best price possible. I believe the Villa Roma has much to offer our delegates and their families, and also any member who would like to join us for a long weekend with their family. The delegates also approved the 2013 budget, and through the hard work of this State Council, there was no per capita increase.

It was unfortunate that we did not get the response that we expected for what would have been our fi rst Family Picnic in a number of years, at the Salis-bury Beach State Reservation. The committee will try again next year and hopefully the response will be better.

The Grand Lodge will host a kickoff to Italian Heritage Month with a Dinner Dance on September 29 at the Watertown Sons of Italy. Tickets are avail-able at $35.00 per person by contacting the Grand Lodge.

On Saturday, November 3, we will host our annual Purple As-ter Dinner Dance at the Ameri-can Legion Nonantum Post 440 in Newton. Tickets will be available at the Grand Lodge.

October is Italian American Heritage Month, and we as Italians and Italian Americans have an opportunity to show-case our heritage to the rest of Massachusetts. Through the many programs and events held throughout the State, our Italian customs, folklore, entertainment programs, and our well established traditions, language classes, opera, musi-cal programs, art shows, fi lm festivals, and sporting events will all become an integral part

of our communities.Through these many cultural

activities we are able to promote our Italian heritage in an ex-tensive outreach program and bring awareness to our com-munity. Lodges that are spon-soring Italian themed events during the month of October are encouraged to submit in-formation about the event to the Grand Lodge so that it may be included in a special edition of the Sons of Italy News as well as on the 2012 October Italian Heritage Month calendar of events.

Kathy and I hope that all of our Brothers and Sisters enjoy the rest of this beautiful sum-mer, and we look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events.

May God bless you all and the Order Sons of Italy in America, and all our service men and women overseas protecting our freedom.

Sabato 3 novembre ospitremo l’annuale ‘Purple Aster Dinner’ all’American Legion Nonan-tum Post #440, a Newton.

OSIAComunita Survey

Showcases Strong Positive Opinionsby Adriana Guida

A survey completed by delegates at the 98th Annual State Convention on June 16, 2012, shows that opinions toward the new program are overwhelmingly positive, and that members are enthusiastic about what OSIA Comunita will have to offer.

Forty-two delegates fi lled out surveys after the OSIA Comunita presentation at convention, providing invaluable feedback for those working to get the program up and run-ning. Every person who fi lled out the survey indicated that they believed OSIA Comunita should play a role in bringing members together to help each other. Delegates were also very positive about several other aspects of the program, including the OSIA Comunita website, and seminars and educational opportunities. Over 90 percent of people noted that they would refer someone who was struggling to OSIA Comunita, and they would hire another OSIA member if they themselves needed help.

A majority of delegates indicated that they are already “enthusiastic supporters” of the project.

Delegates also provided useful feedback on the challenges OSIA Comunita would likely face. The majority of those comments were focused in three main areas: encouraging those running the program to reach out to involve mem-bers, keeping everything organized and up-to-date, and advertising within the Grand Lodge and to prospective new members.

Members involved in the development of OSIA Comu-nita plan on using this feedback as they look forward to fully implementing the program. The committee welcomes feedback at any time, and encourages members to visit the Grand Lodge website for more information about the program and progress updates.

For full results and analysis, visit osiama.org/osiacomunita and click on “OSIA Comunita Results.”

The Organization & Educa-tion Commission of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts pre-sented its fourth and fi nal in a series of Educational Work-shops on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Portsmouth Public Library at 175 Parrot Avenue, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The facilities for this meeting were truly unbelievable! A mod-ern library building taking up a rather large area in a com-plex of new buildings featured side rooms for meetings, events or presentations, and other amenities.

This workshop covered lodges in Districts 6 and 7, and attendees from the Granite State Lodge #2380, Seacoast Area Lodge #2303, and the Gorizia Lodge #467 were pres-ent, along with Organization & Education Chairman Louis Floriani and members of his commission, and a contingent of State Offi cers and Commis-sion Chairmen.

Although the weather was not favorable for those traveling any distance, we were graciously received by the host lodge, the Seacoast Area Lodge #2303 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The ladies of the Seacoast Lodge had prepared a morning col-lation on the very wet, dreary morning. It certainly hit the spot and we thank the ladies of that Seacoast Lodge for their delicious morning snack.

Chairman Louis Floriani opened the meeting by intro-ducing State President James DiStefano who informed the members of some of the hap-penings on the State level. He spoke on the increase of the per capita tax by the Supreme Lodge and how the State had absorbed this increase without passing it on to individual lodges. State President DiStefano also noted that our By-Laws are listed on our website, along with other vital information.

Brother F lor iani intro-duced State Trustee Stephen Cozzaglio, Liaison Offi cer to the Organization & Education Com-mission, who spoke on our orga-nization and what it is all about. State President DiStefano read in its entirety the speech given by Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro at the time of the inauguration of the Order Sons of Italy in America. (For anyone interested in this speech, it can be also found on our website osiama.org). Also on the website is the Ritual

for Installation of Offi cers, the President’s Handbook, and the Membership Handbook.

And, once again, the duties of the Lodge Offi cers was read and explained in detail by Brother Stephen Cozzaglio and Public Relations Chairman Dorothy Berlandi, followed by a question and answer period. It is important to know that by simply following these duties, your lodge will run smoothly and effi ciently.

The importance of the State Deputy was again brought to everyone’s attention. The State Deputy is a representative of the State President and the State Council. It is important to note that at least once every three months, a detailed report of what he or she observes should be sent to the State Council. The State Deputy also has the responsibility of bringing to the attention of the membership the various functions and impor-tant memos originating from the Grand Lodge offi ce. These forms are available by calling the Grand Lodge offi ce.

Brother David Covucci spoke on our newest venture, OSIA Comunita: Italian-Americans helping Italian-Americans. This project is in the planning stages and as this project develops, updates will be made available to everyone.

After a very busy morning, the ladies of the Seacoast Lodge prepared a most delicious colla-tion. We were treated to seafood chowder prepared by Lodge President John Semprini, which was just what was needed on this rainy day. There were sand-wiches, wraps, salad, and des-sert. It was diffi cult to go back to a meeting after this meal!

Brother Floriani introduced State First Vice President Carmelita Bello who spoke on the rules governing Parliamen-tary Procedure and its impor-tance. A copy of this section was made available to all who attended.

State Trustee and Junior Division President Charles DeStefano read the composi-tion by Angelo Bianchi, Esq. of New Jersey entitled “I am an Italian-American.” Sister Dorothy Berlandi spoke about the twenty-fi ve Italian-American Medal of Honor recipients, starting with a Major during the Civil War and spanning to the present in Afghanistan. She highlighted one in particular,

John Basilone, who served as a Marine during World War II and who now has a postage stamp in his honor and had a book written about his life.

Brother DeStefano also spoke about the Junior Lodges and the proposal submitted to the 98th Annual Convention by the Burlington Lodge #2223. They asked that M.L. ART. 117(a) be amended to read: “The Grand Lodge established a minimum of 18 years for admission to local lodges, and a minimum of 10 years for admission to the Junior Division and a maxi-mum age of 21 with eligibility for admission to a senior lodge before their 22nd birthday.”

Brother Floriani introduced Italian Culture Chairman Patrick Moreno who brought us up-to-date on the many pro-grams available to us. Brother Moreno is available to visit your lodge or arrange to have a guest speaker on Italian Culture.

Commissioner David Covucci of the Benefi t Insurance Com-mission spoke on the insurance available through the Commis-sion. If any Lodge desires a speaker from this Commission they are encouraged to contact the Grand Lodge offi ce.

State Second Vice President and Membership Chairman Antonio Sestito spoke about membership. He noted that our newest lodge, the Tewksbury Lodge, is growing by leaps and bounds. He noted that we have a membership brochure avail-able and we should all be fi nd-ing new ways of increasing our membership.

Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422 President Marisa Ranalli spoke about the most celebrated Italian legend, La Befana. Brother Moreno read the article in Italian and Sister Ranalli in English.

Sister Berlandi spoke on the Public Relations and Historical commissions. Sister Berlandi reminded everyone to send information on their functions so that we can share it with all our brothers and sisters via the Sons of Italy News. She also reminded everyone to check if they had fi led a Lodge his-tory with the Grand Lodge or with Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca. At present, we have approximately 40 lodge histo-ries listed on our website.

Chairman Louis Floriani thanked everyone who attended this fourth and fi nal workshop.

Special thanks are extended to the Seacoast Lodge #2303 for hosting the workshop and for providing the wonderful food, especially the seafood chowder!

We thank all the lodges that participated, the State Presi-dent, Grand Lodge Officers, Benefi t Insurance Commission members, and Commission Chairmen, for making this series of workshops a success.

Walk-a-thon a success. He announced his appointment for the following years’ Walk-a-thon chairman; naturally, we all knew it had to be Brother Anthony J. Panaggio, Jr.

We thank State Recording Secretary Ron Hill for his photography; the photos help to enhance our story.

To all the committee members and walkers, we thank you for helping make this a successful Walk-a-thon.

Chairman Panaggio, thank you for guiding us in the right direction.

A delicious buffet was served with a very luscious salad, penne pasta with marina sauce, chicken parmigiana, and sausage and peppers with potatoes.

Sister Kane welcomed everyone and thanked them for supporting the fundraiser. She introduced Walk-a-Thon Chairman Anthony J. Panaggio, Jr. who spoke on the upcoming Walk-a-thon and its importance. He reminded every-one that it would take place on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at DCR’s Breakhart Reservation in Saugus, Massachusetts. Brother Panaggio thanked everyone in attendance and encouraged members to get pledges out and recruit more walkers.

State President James DiStefano re-iterated the need for this Walk-a-thon to be successful, and thanked everyone who attended the fundraiser and Sister Kane for her support.

Before the evening came to a close there was a raffl e; the prizes had been donated by members in attendance. It was evident that the evening was a great success.

Our thanks go to our photographer for the evening, Brother Ron Hill, who took some great photos.

LODGE HISTORIES

In this issue we are featuring the Seacoast Area Lodge #2303. If you have not yet sent in your lodge history, please do and send it to the attention of our Historical Chairman Delia Bartucca at the Grand Lodge Offi ce, 93 Concord Ave., Belmont, Massachusetts 02478.

In the course of a conver-sation among three Italian-American friends, they agreed on a lack of a local club or organization that would unite into one social entity people of Italian lineage residing in the area. Contacting other mem-bers of the Italian community, they found them very receptive to their idea, and the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, Order Sons of Italy in America was contacted. Grand Venerable Louis W. Salvatore responded by assigning Grand Officers Guy Arigo and Frank Costanzo to investigate and assist the local group in their quest. At fi rst, the undertaking was slow and tedious, but after many meetings and deliberations the idea became a reality. On Janu-ary 27, 1974, at the Pannaway Club — owned by Colombo “Babe” Marconi, future member and benefactor — the Seacoast Area Lodge #2303 was char-tered. The Pannaway Club be-came the fi rst lodge home. The name of the Lodge was derived from being located in the Sea-coast area of New Hampshire.

Gathering at the Lodge on various occasions, observing the many items of memora-bilia donated by individuals and lodges that helped insti-tute the new Lodge, helps us remember their generosity and goodwill. Among those who contributed were Quincy Lodge #1295 Venerable Jack Brown, Peabody Ladies Lodge #1964 Venerable Ida Cottone, Loggia

Riunite #889 Venerable An-thony DiFillipo, Winthrop Lodge #2057 Venerable Anthony J. Bonocorso, Winthrop Ladies Lodge #2071 Venerable Gloria Ferullo, Wakefi eld Lodge #1734 Venerable Marilyn Butfi loski, Revere Ladies Lodge #1601 Venerable Rose Francis, Lynn Roma Ladies Lodge #1072 Ven-erable Angela Costanza, Salem Ladies Lodge #2123 Venerable Rosalie Croteau, Medford Lodge #1358 Venerable Frank J. Miceli, Erico Fermi Lodge #2182 Venerable Anthony Finodicaro, Lawrence Ladies Lodge #2026 Venerable Eleanor B. Fulgione, East Boston Lodge #1600, and Winchester Lodge #1580.

Above the podium is the Charter bearing the signatures of Tony Vaccaro, Fred Ferrara, and Sam Faragi, chosen by their fellow members to represent the more than 125 members initiated at the institution of the Lodge. They are recognized as the Lodge’s founders, and mem-bers honor them for conceiving the idea and doing the work resulting in the establishment of our Lodge.

The fi rst offi cers elected as-sumed the task of chartering the course of the new Lodge. They were Venerable Albert DiPaolo, Assistant Venerable Michael Canino, Ex-Venerable Antonio Vaccaro Sr., Orator Alfredo Ferrara, Financial Sec-retary Paul Anania, Treasurer Salvatore Canino, Recording Secretary Joseph Maiolino, Trustees Salvatore LaCava,

by Dorothy Berlandi

Antonio Vaccaro Jr., John Vinciguerra, Colombo “Babe” Marconi, and Sam Faragi, Mas-ters of Ceremony Vincenzo Comperchio and John Cresta, and Sergeant-at-Arms John Faragi.

At present the lodge is lo-cated in a registered historic building, owned by the city of Portsmouth, built as a school house in 1845. It is located at 1 Plains Avenue, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where the meetings are held — the execu-tive council on the fi rst Tuesday of the month, and the regular membership meeting on the third Tuesday of the month.

The Lodge has become established in the community, participating with other local organizations in various func-tions, including fundraising for the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Operation Blessing, and soup kitchens, organizing and super-vising the Walk-a-thon for the March of Dimes, and supporting Grand Lodge fundraisers and programs by attending various Grand Lodge functions and establishing an annual scholar-ship for graduating high school seniors.

We are thankful for all the Venerables and Presidents who came before us for their service and leadership. The fruit of their labor is evidenced by the fact that the Seacoast Area Lodge #2303 continues to perform well.

In a bowl mix ricotta cheese, beaten eggs and salt. Add fl our gradually to the mixture, mixing by hand, until dough is soft. Remove dough from bowl and place dough on a fl oured pastry board to knead. If dough sticks to your fi ngers or hands, add a little fl our and continue kneading until the dough is soft, smooth and pliable.

Cut and roll portions into long 8- or 10-inch rolls of about one-inch thickness. Place in bowl and cover. Taking one roll at the time, fl atten roll slightly with your hand or a rolling pin. Cut into one-inch portions. With index and middle fi ngertips, press into each piece of dough and roll fi ngers forward in the dough. This will curl the dough into gnocchi. Continue until all dough is used.

For cooking gnocchi, boil about 4 quarts of salted water. After dropping gnocchi into the boiling water, stir and cover. Watch carefully because water boils over quickly. Gnocchi will fl oat to the top as they cook. They cook rapidly. Check for consistency desired. Drain and place in a bowl. Add your tomato sauce and serve.

Serves four.NOTE: I love the memories of watching my parents make home-

made macaroni in our home. They didn’t seem to have a written recipe. It was all stored in their minds. Through the years, I decided their recipes should be written out. I watched Mama measure out the fl our, add the water or beaten eggs and all the necessary ingredients for gnocchi. Papa kneaded the dough. Mama always took out her extra-long wooden rolling pin when the dough had to be rolled into thin round portions before Papa could fold it and then cut it into linguine. For gnocchi, Papa cut up the dough after kneading it. Mama, with her fi ngers, patiently formed the small portions of cut-up dough into gnocchi. Before my brother Peter and I knew it, the homemade macaroni was ready to serve at noontime for Sunday dinner. They always made it seem that it was such a pleasure serving homemade macaroni, and it was.

On September 23, 1952, Rocky Marciano made history by knock-ing out Joe Walcott and claiming the world heavyweight champi-onship. He went on to become the only heavyweight to retire undefeated at 49-0. Now, sixty years to the day later, he’ll make history again as a record-size statue will be raised in his honor on September 23, 2012 in Brock-ton, Massachusetts.

Join the World Boxing Coun-cil and President Jose Sulai-man, the Rocky Marciano Statue Committee, Rocky Marciano’s family, and the City of Brock-ton on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at 1:00 pm for the Statue Dedication at Champions Park/Marciano Stadium located on the Brockton High School grounds off of Forest Avenue.

The event to unveil the statue will be monumental and historic — not just for the City, but for the sporting world. Not only are several dozen current and former boxing champions planning to attend, but celebrities from vari-ous sports, movies, and politics. National and international media will be in attendance, as the box-ing world, and especially Brock-tonians and Italian-Americans celebrate what they have so long desired — a tribute to their be-loved Rocky Marciano. Champi-ons Park will undoubtedly grow to become a worldwide destination.

There will be various events scheduled throughout the week-end. Check www.rockystatue.org for more information.

The Norwood Italian Lodge #1235 recently held its Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner on June 5, 2012, at Boncaldo’s Restaurant in Norwood. Lodge President George Franco greeted members and guests.

Scholarship Chairman Toni Eosco welcomed the nearly 70 members and guests in atten-dance. Mrs. Eosco recognized lodge members Barbara Campagna and Winnie Carfagno for their volunteer work on the Scholarship Com-mittee. Scholarship award presentations took place immediately following a delicious dinner.

Through the fundraising efforts of the lodge members, and with additional donations to the scholarship fund made in memory of longtime lodge member Ann Rizzo, two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 were awarded to college-bound students. Winnie Carfagno made the fi rst presentation to Julia Bilotta, a graduate of Medway High School. Julia is the daughter of Frank and Joan Bilotta, as well as the grand-daughter of lodge members Frank and Barbara Bilotta. Julia will pursue a chemical engineering major at Northeastern University.

He is the son of William and Lucille Nethercote and grandson of lodge members Leon and Mary Niro. David intends to pursue a chemistry major at UMass-Am-herst. The Lodge congratulated both recipients and wished them good luck with their future plans.

Following the awards, Toni Eosco introduced guest speaker, Jennifer Fraone. Mrs. Fraone, daughter of lodge members Phyllis and George Sabatini, and a pervious local and Grand Lodge scholarship winner in 1987, delivered inspir-ing remarks to the current scholarship winners and guests. Mrs. Fraone is the Assistant Director for the Center of Work and Family at Boston College, Carroll School of Management. She addressed the challenges of the workplace, choosing career paths, caring for family, defi n-ing success, and the importance of taking time to pause and enjoy the present. Mrs. Fraone received enthusiastic applause at the conclusion of her presentation.

On June 2, 2012 the City of Brockton, under the administra-tion of Christopher Columbus Lodge #216 member Mayor Linda Balzotti, celebrated Italian Republic Day with a Proclamation in recognition of the historic vote taken in 1946 to establish Italy as a Republic. After 85 years as a monarchy, it was decided by a vote of 54 to 46 percent that the leaders of the country should be elected by popular vote.

Today in Italy, June 2 is known as Festa della Repubblica, and is celebrated and treated the same as July 14 in France and, of course, July 4 in the United States. President Alfonso thanked Mayor Balzotti and her team for hosting the event.

Everyone followed the Mayor outside to the Brockton City Hall Courtyard on a beautiful sunny June morning to raise the Italian fl ag.

Following a brief lodge business meeting, over sixty members, friends, and guests gathered at the Winthrop Senior Center for the annual presentation of two signifi cant awards the lodge is proud to give. This year’s scholarship recipient was Harrison Trubitt, grand-son of Peggy Pacifi co, for his outstanding academic achievements along with his community service and athletic abilities. Harrison is a graduate of Cathedral Catholic High School and resides in San Diego, California with his family. Harrison graduated with a class rank of 139 out of 410 graduates, and has a wonderful history in peer mentoring, volunteering, and scouting.

His ten years in scouting have helped shape this well-rounded young man, who is also a champion swimmer, water polo player, and coach. This year Harrison was inducted into the National Eagle Scout Association. This young man exemplifi es a strong commitment in wanting to make a difference. Across many miles we extend our very best wishes to Harrison as he heads off to Cal Poly Tech State University in San Luis Obispo, CA this fall with a goal of one day becoming an attorney.

Real heroes don’t fl aunt their heroic actions – they quietly go about their day-to-day lives, doing what they do best. This year Winthrop Fire Chief Paul E. Flanagan was the recipient of the “In Recognition and Appreciation” Award. Six years ago this award was established by our Lodge president to honor people who have both played a signifi cant role in the community and have befriended our Lodge. Often we just expect things to happen and we forget to say “thank you.”

The town will never realize all of Paul’s contributions and accomplishments both within and around the town, as a graduate of Winthrop High in 1974 and joining the fi re department in 1978. Dating back to 1904, Paul’s grandfather served as Winthrop’s Fire Chief and his son Charles, (Paul’s father), followed in his footsteps. One can only imagine the family pride when the third generation, Paul and his brother Chuck, joined the department and to have Paul rise to the rank of Chief. Sharing in the celebration with Paul was the Flanagan family: lovely wife Susan, son Andrew, his brother Captain Chuck Flanagan and his mom, Marilyn.

Presenting citations from the Commonwealth were Senator Anthony Petruccelli and Valentino Capobianco, legislative aid representing House Speaker Robert DeLeo. Town Council Presi-dent Peter Gill and his wife Maureen brought greetings from the Town of Winthrop. Offering prayers was Rev. Father Bourke from St. John the Evangelist and Chaplin to the Winthrop Police and Fire Departments.

State President James DiStefano accompanied by First Lady Kathy shared in making this awards program a memorable suc-cess. All enjoyed the bountiful Italian buffet catered by Cimino’s Meat Market.
