SWINELINE 402‐271‐1794 www.evhog.net
The hot weather is finally upon us and the rain is starting to lighten up and allow us to actually put some miles on the bikes. I sure hope everyone got to ride and log their miles over the last weekend of June for the HOG World Ride. There have been many Chapter rides planned over the last couple of months but unfortunately the weather has caused us to have to cancel the majority of them. It has either been raining or the forecast has called for rain and not many have wanted to get out and chance it. One of the rides that were cancelled was our large fund raiser, the HD Poker Run. We have rescheduled this ride for August 15th so please make sure to get this on your calendar and tell all your friends.
July and August have a lot of great rides planned already as well with the big one being The Day of the HOG on July 18th. Please try to help out by selling raffle tickets for the motorcycle or volunteering for the Poker Run stops. If you need books of tick-ets to sell or need to turn them in, you can contact Dillon Brothers and they can help you out. For any volunteer information please contact Don Schwartzkopf at [email protected] and he can take care of you. This is going to be a great event that is ending in Yutan this year in conjunction with Yutan Days so there will be a lot of fun after that last stop.
For those that have not heard, or seen the Activity Calendar, we are planning to have our July and August Chapter meetings as riding meetings. The reason we all bought our motorcycles was to ride them so lets get out there and go for a ride. The July meeting will be on SATURDAY, July 11th where we will meet at Dillon Brothers at 10:30 AM and will be taking a nice long ride to Round the Bend Steakhouse for a quick Chapter update, prize drawings and 50/50 and then everyone can head back for the Boxer poker run, grab some lunch or hit the road to ride some more. The August meeting has been scheduled for SUNDAY, August 16th meeting at Dillons at 1 PM for another long ride and short meeting.
Sturgis is just around the corner and, the last I heard, they are expecting over 1.5 million people. For those going it should be a once in a lifetime experience for the 75th anniversary. Remember, that many motorcycles on those mountain roads will bring a lot of potential dangers so ride safe and be careful.

OK maybe we are going to get a string of days where it doesn’t rain and we will be able to ride. I have posted new rides so check out the activities page to sign up for the rides. As always, if you have an idea let me (or any officer) know and I will get it put on the calendar.
The second and fourth Wednesdays are impromptu rides; show up at 6:15pm, those who show up decide where the ride goes, how far or short it goes and if you stop for refreshments or dining. We have had requests that indicate not everyone wants to ride to a dinner or an event so now it’s up to the group to decide.
If you haven’t heard, there will be events at the dealership every Thursday, Throttle Thursdays and the Twin Peaks Band Battle will be taking place with refreshments being provided by Twin Peaks during the Band Battle so check out the dealership events. The July Chapter meeting will be a riding meeting ending up at Round the Bend in South Bend, check the activities page for the start time. The August Chapter meeting will be a riding meeting also and that destination is still being deter-mined I will update the activities page as soon as the details are ironed out.
Happy Independence Day to you all!!!!

The date is almost here for the 12th Annual Day of The HOG. It is July 18th with registration starting at 10AM. Hope everyone has had a chance to sell some raffle tickets and that they will also be able to participate in the poker run.
The 10th Annual Day of the Hog Golf Tournament was another great event with a large turnout. Thanks to everyone that came out and participated as well as those who volunteered to help with the registra-tion.
Just a reminder of the incentives that we have this year starting with, for every book of tickets that you sell, you will have one entry put into a draw-ing for a seven day get away and the chapter member that sells the most books will also get a seven day trip. This will be a getaway that you can ride your bike to. Also if you sell $1600 you will receive a $75 gift card, $3200 - $100 gift card, $4800 -$125 gift card. Please make sure and have your tickets turned in by July 14.
We still need a few volunteers to assist the day of the event and Dillon Harley will give a twenty five dollar gift card to each volunteer. Please let myself or Beth Slovinski know if you can volunteer the day of the event. There is going to be primitive camping for free close to the evening event.
The Band “Joystick” will play from 6PM till 8:30PM at which time we will have the drawing and will be auctioning off the gas tank signed by Willie G after the drawing. There will also be a silent auction of donated items. After that the band will be back on stage until 1AM.
If you do not register and participate in the poker run you can still come to Yutan which is the location of the last stop and enjoy the band, food and friends. The cost to get into the gate is ten dollars if you did not regis-ter for the poker run. Let’s make this the best Day of The HOG yet. Hope to see all of you there.

2015 MDA Kids Camp
On June, 17th, John, Carl, Cecil, and I made our way to Cozad, Nebraska for the MDA Kid’s Camp. We had three sidecar bikes including the two Dillon’s bikes and Carl’s bike.
When we arrived, the kids were already lined up, wai ng for rides! You could easily see the excitement on each of their faces as we gave them rides. For some, it was their first me and there was a li le feeling of apprehension that quickly turned to smiles as we went down the road. For those who had ridden in previous years, they said they look forward to it each year.
A er giving the kids rides, we were treated to grilled burgers, followed by a tour of the facility by Meggie Murphy. Many of you may remember Meggie, one of our MDA kids who has been very ac ve on Day Of The HOG over the past few years. She showed us the gymnasium where they play many games and ac vi es, a swimming pool, arts & cra s, a beau ful overlook, and much more. The local fire department was also there with a fire truck supplying the water during a water fight.
It was easy to see why these kids look forward to this each year and one of their highlights is their rare opportunity to go on a motorcycle ride. This was my first me a ending this event. It’s a long way to Cozad, but it’s definitely worth it to bring a few minutes of joy to each of these kids. Among other things the money we raise for DOTH, helps to pay for these kids to go to this camp. It was a great experience for me to see our efforts pay off! If you haven’t a ended this event before, keep it in mind for next year!

Harley‐Davidson in the Six es – Trying to Deal With the Bri sh/Japanese Invasion
1960 The H‐D Topper Scooter 1961 Sprint Models at the Aermacchi Factory in Verese, Italy
1965 H‐D Electric Start Electra‐Glide Shovelhead Engine The KR750 Flathead Racer –Doomed in
In our last installment, H‐D in the Fi ies, the Sportster model was introduced in 1957 to combat the lighter, faster, cheaper Bri sh bikes. The struggle to compete in a changing marketplace intensified in the 1960’s, as Japanese brands Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki entered the American market.
In 1960, con nuing acknowledgement of the need for smaller motorcycles to compete in the marketplace, H‐D introduced their first and only scooter model, the Topper. Harley also purchased the Italian company Aermacchi, which produced fast and stylish machines up to 350cc displacement. The first Aermacchi design to reach the United States was the 1961 Harley‐Davidson Sprint. This bike found favor with short track racers due to its good power and low center of gravity.
Another effort to modernize and compete resulted in the purchase of the Tomahawk Boat Company in 1962. Tomahawk specialized in producing fiberglass boats, and H‐D recognized the need to improve their in‐house fiberglass skills and apply them to the motorcycle product.
Con nued on next page
A threat to Harley‐Davidson’s racing dominance arose in 1968. H‐D had been enjoying a 250cc engine size advantage with its flathead racing engines for years, and for years, the import manufacturers who all ran with overhead valves lobbied to end the unfair advantage. The American Motorcycle Associa on finally ruled that overhead valve engines could also now be up to 750cc displacement. H‐D lobbied the AMA for a one year delay in implemen ng the new rule, but the handwri ng was on the wall.
Finally in 1969, Harley‐Davison shareholders sold the company to American Machine and Foundry Compa‐ny (AMF), a diversified manufacturing company best known for bowling equipment. There is s ll come specula on that the sale to AMF was provoked by the introduc on of the Honda CB750 four – a direct challenge to Harley’s tradi onal big bike dominance. AMA promptly mismanaged the company into near oblivion, but that’s a story for another day…..
I am looking for EVHOG members interested in being featured in the Then and Now series. Please e‐mail photos of you and your bike “then” (when you joined EVHOG) and today, and a write up about you (and your partner if applicable), to [email protected].
Further moderniza on took place in 1964‐1965, with introduc on of electric star ng on the venerable Servicar, and then on the Duoglide, which was renamed Electraglide. The Servicar hung on un l finally discon nued in 1968.
A new, more powerful engine was introduced on H‐D’s full sized bikes to replace the Panhead in 1966. The shape of the rocker boxes somewhat resembled coal shovels, and the new motor was dubbed the “Shovelhead”.
I hope everyone is having a fun summer and getting lots of miles in. We have several fun activities planned this summer and few ideas on how to continue to grow membership above the 190 members we currently have. Be sure to let your friends know about the "Road Kill" ride which is open to all people and all makes of bikes, and tell them about the fun times you've been having with EVHOG. Enjoy your summer and stay safe. Jeremiah
