Clubs ClassesMeet our Members Elaine Elkin & Shirley Carlston

You may recognize Elaine and Shirley as the ladies waltzing up/down the bus aisle on FC trips; negotiating a balancing act while handing out snacks and assisting on the Friendship Circle Day Excursions. Elaine commented that she always wanted to be a flight attendant!

After Elaine retired, she was invited to a FC event by Barbara Scharf, a close friend, and it was “love at first sight.” She began volunteering on day trips and Shirley joined once she retired.

Elaine and her two brothers grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. She attended Polytechnic High School in the Haight district (ground zero for the hippie movement). She graduated from San Francisco State College and became a school psychologist—working in Rohnert Park Elementary schools for 37 years before retiring.

Elaine was raised in a free-spirited/political household and spent summers in rustic Mexico. Her father worked for Ford Auto Service as a service writer and her mother (who had a Master’s Degree in School Counseling) was a stay-at-home mom and a known matchmaker, who connected Elaine to her future ex-husband.

Shirley Carlston grew up in the Pasadena area with three siblings. Her father was a teacher at Pasadena High School and her mother was a housewife.

Shirley has always been a free-spirit (particularly compared to her conservative family). As a teen she was on a bus to Watts to visit friends when the riots broke out. She also worked one summer with Cesar Chavez pushing for farmworker rights. From 1984-87 she was in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica where she helped train teachers.

She graduated from Cal State University San Bernardino with a degree in special education and longing for greenery, she moved to the Bay Area. She worked as a special education teacher for 30 years. She last worked in the Rohnert Park Elementary schools where she met Elaine.

Elaine and Shirley have been together for 29 years. They live on eight acres of redwood forest in Occidental. Elaine enjoys doing woodworking projects around their home, as well as playing mahjong. Shirley enjoys reading and hugging redwood trees.

Daily Grill & CabaretUnion Square, San FranciscoSunday, September 8Join your friends for this culturally enriching day in San Francisco! Take a leisurely ride across the Golden Gate Bridge and into the heart of the city for a private group lunch at Daily Grill. After lunch, we’ll walk along Union Square (less than five minutes) to SF Playhouse.

At the theater, we’ll meet Cabaret Director and SF PlayhouseCo-Founder Susi Damilano for a private pre-show lecture followed by the award-winning and critically acclaimed musical, Cabaret:

“No good is sitting alone in your room, come hear the music play!” John Kander and Fred Ebb’s legendary landmark musical turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a dark and sexually charged haven of decadence where its extraordinary and morally ambiguous inhabitants are determined to keep up appearances as the real world—outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret—prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. It is here that Sally Bowles performs nightly at the infamous Kit-Kat Klub in “a shimmering masterpiece of a show guaranteed night after night. It's divine decadence darling!”

Book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and music by John Kander. Directed by Bill English.
