In the Spring newsletter, I talked about Guruji’s Centenary celebration in Pune in December last year and looked forward to the IYNAUS (Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US) National Convention, which took place in Dallas this past April.
Randy Just, the most senior teacher and leader of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the South Central US (IYASCUS), along with the help of over 200 volunteers, spent two years coordinating the Convention. At least from my outside perspective, the entire event went off without a hitch. The venue held comfortably the 900 people who attended, and the surrounding environment provided a variety of restaurants for convention goers. I’m sure there were sights to see as well, but
with a schedule that was packed from early morning well into the evening hours, no time to see them.
At every Convention, there is always a general meeting open to all the members o f t h e A s s o c i a t i o n , as wel l as Reg iona l Association meetings. In the Washington area, our Regional Association is the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Southeast (IYASE). Unity Woods’s own Leah DiQuollo is the current
President of IYASE. (Go to iyase.org to learn more and join.)

All of our classes are based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar. Named by Time magazine as "one of the 100 most influential people in the world", Mr. Iyengar is widely regarded as the 20th century's foremost yoga teacher. His approach develops self-awareness through precision in movement and attention to the subtleties of body, breath, mind, and spirit.

THE IYENGAR YOGA COMMUNITY, intended to address the issues of inclusivity, outreach to minority and underserved communities, and the removal of barriers that perpetuate unconscious bias within our own community.
I also attended a three-hour assessors’ meeting. The triannual Convention is a unique opportunity for assessors to get together in person to discuss the many questions and difficulties that arise as part of the certification process.
The Lighting the Way Award, which recognizes and honors an IYNAUS member who has contributed extraordinary volunteer service, was presented at the banquet on the last night of the Convention. I was pleased to be asked to present the Award to my longtime friend and colleague, Laurie Blakeney. Laurie, the most senior teacher and leader of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Midwest (IYAMW), has served the community in many capacities for decades, but most notably as Chair of the Certification Committee for two(!) terms. That job is an unbelievably difficult and near thankless task. The award is well deserved.
One evening of the Convention featured the world premiere of the new film Iyengar: The Man, Yoga, and the Student’s Journey by award winning director, Jake Clennell. This movie is a fascinating portrait of B.K.S. Iyengar’s teaching and its effect on people from some surprising corners of life.
Of course, the primary focus and main event of the entire Convention was Abhijata Iyengar’s teaching. For three hours each morning and two hours each afternoon, Abhi led the entire assemblage in masterfully presented classes. Steeped in the teachings of her grandfather, B.K.S. Iyengar, and her aunt and uncle, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar, Abhi taught classes that were challenging, illuminating, and fun. The work was often intense, but Abhi’s wonderful and witty sense of humor lightened the vibe and bonded the participants with her and with each other. Part of the joy for me was hearing Mr. Iyengar’s voice in her teaching. Not only the content of her instructions, but the rhythm, intonation, and dynamics of her voice carried me back to Guruji’s classes where the magical process of hearing, absorbing, and responding to creative cues and clues brought the poses to new levels. Everyone I spoke to at the
Convention and since returning home has marveled at Abhi’s innovative techniques, the wise ways she wove classical Yoga philosophy into our actions, and the captivating stories she told about studying and living with B.K.S. Iyengar, all offered in the context of her uplifting and inspiring presence. Her uncanny ability to channel her teachers and at the same time speak in her own voice is an example to all of us of the power of practice in the process of making these teachings our own - a particularly profound and important message, as the theme of the Convention was to Explore the Path of Practice.
A highlight of the Convention was Abhijata’s keynote address on the second night. She spoke clearly, directly, and honestly. The ostensible focus of her speech was the key role that intention plays in practice and teaching, but the subtext was the turmoil in the Iyengar community caused by the decision by the Board of Directors in conjunction with the Iyengars to decertify Manouso Manos, one of only two people in the US to hold an Advanced Senior Certificate. This decision came about as the result of the conclusions reached by a Special Investigator hired to examine allegations of sexual, physical, and psychological abuse brought by more than half a dozen complainants. An exhaustive inquiry took place with hundreds of hours of testimony taken and tens of thousands of dollars spent. I was involved personally in the investigation to the extent that I was asked by IYNAUS President, David Carpenter, to meet with Bernadette Sargeant, the investigator, and answer her questions about Iyengar yoga. Ms. Sargeant, a highly qualified and experienced investigator in matters of abuse, is not a yoga teacher or practitioner, so my job was to explain what Iyengar Yoga is, show her props and describe how we use them, and answer questions about adjustments. I was not asked to comment on Manouso personally (I have known and been friends with Manouso for nearly forty years) or to make judgements on any of the allegations raised in the inquiry. David asked me to participate because I am the most senior teacher in the Washington area which is where Ms. Sargeant is based.
Because Manouso has been such a prominent teacher in the community for so long, because he is a skillful and charismatic teacher, and

John Schumacher is the founder and director of Unity Woods. He has prac-ticed yoga for over 45 years and has taught in the Washing-
ton area since 1973. John studied in India with B.K.S. Iyengar for 33 years and is an Advanced Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT). He also spent many years studying with internationally acclaimed teacher Dona Holleman.
John’s clear, precise style and his engaging sense of humor have made him one of the country’s leading yoga teachers. Yoga Journal cited him as one of "25 Americans who are shaping yoga today." He has written for a variety of publications and has appeared in numerous local and national media, including U.S. News and World Report, Yoga Journal, Washingtonian Maga-zine, the Washington Times, the Washington Post, PBS and others. John speaks about the practice and benefits of yoga on radio and television and at conferences and organizations around the country.
Over the years John has taught thousands of students and trained hundreds of teachers. He contin-ues to travel across the U.S. and throughout the world, includ-ing Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and the Caribbean, where he conducts workshops for students and teach-ers of all levels.
Namaste (continued)
because he has thousands of dedicated students,
this situation has completely splintered the
community. Many feel that Manouso has been
wrongly accused and take his side, castigating
his accusers, the investigator, and IYNAUS in
the process. Others are horrified by his actions
as described in the report, and in addition to
denouncing Manouso, blame IYNAUS and
the Iyengars for creating a culture that allows
and fosters abusive behavior. Not only the
Iyengar community is up in arms, but others
in the broader yoga community are taking
the occasion to call for an examination of
the teacher-student relationship, what actions
should be taken to avoid abusive situations, and
to offer their perspectives on B.K.S. Iyengar and
his methods.
The report was released about a week before the
Convention opened, but most in the community
were aware of the situation months ahead, after
the initial allegations went public on KQED in
September. Because of this, there was a palpable
sense of dread among many regarding how this
would play out at the Convention.
Abhi’s keynote, in which she made herself
especially vulnerable and relevant by recounting
for the first time her own being abused sexually
some twenty earlier and in which she addressed
the issue of touch and its role in Iyengar Yoga,
was instrumental in changing the underlying
tone of the Convention to a much more positive
one.
Still, the issue came up at the general meeting
and was a constant topic of conversation at
meals and in hallway discussions. It remains
a powerful and divisive force in the Iyengar
community and the larger yoga community.
One thing that can be said for certain: The
situation is a tragedy for all concerned - for the
people who felt they were (and continue to
be) harassed and abused; for Manouso, whose
professional and personal life is in tatters; for
his family, who must be suffering terribly; for his
students who, irrespective of where they stand
on the report, must be deeply disturbed; and for
the community which has lost one of its most
prominent and influential members and finds
itself roiled by strife and dissension.
To my mind, the challenge for us as practitioners
is to look into our own hearts to find compassion
for ALL who are suffering through this and to
honor the meaning of namaste, which is often
offered casually, but which reminds us that we
are not just colleagues or teachers or students
but inextricably connected brothers and sisters.
We will need to act as our best and most honest
judgements dictates to us and to keep in mind
that any action that isn't based in love will surely
bear bitter fruit.

Topic: The Art of Skillful
Adjustments
As yoga teachers we strive to improve our students’ performance by guiding them to safer and more effective ways to work. One of the ways we accomplish this is by adjusting their poses. We can do it verbally, by visually demonstrating the proper method, or by hands-on corrections.
First, however, we need to see what must be done. Observing what is happening, who needs attention most, where to go first: all are key elements in seeing the class and the students in it.
Then comes the art of adjusting. Skill in manually adjusting your students is learned over time and is based on the depth and intelligence of your own practice. We will examine some basic principles that form the foundation for giving good adjustments.
Morning sessions will focus on seeing a class and the students in it. We’ll work on what to look for, what to avoid, and the mechanics of observation. We’ll study and practice techniques to make effective adjustments. We will practice teach in the afternoon sessions to help you refine your skills as a teacher. Optional early morning practices open to all.

The Lighting the Way Award recognizes and honors an IYNAUS member who has contributed extraordinary volunteer service toward the dissemination of the art, science and philosophy of yoga as presented by B.K.S. Iyengar, and has assisted IYNAUS in carrying out this mission. Laurie, the most senior teacher and leader of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Midwest (IYAMW), has served the community in many capacities for decades, but most notably in two (!) terms as Chair of the Certification Committee, an unbelievably difficult and near thankless task.
Becoming a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) requires years of dedicated practice, training and experience. This rigorous preparation for the national certification exams produces highly quali-fied and knowledgeable yoga teachers. Unity Woods is proud of our expert and inspiring faculty.

ASANA (POSTURE)Gentle classes are for students who are less flexible, not so strong, have a particular limitation, or would prefer a more slowly paced, less rigorous class.
Level I classes introduce beginning students and students new to Unity Woods' approach to the fundamentals of posture and breath.
Level I/II classes are for students who have completed Level I and prefer a gradual tran-sition to Level II. This level is also ideal for those with previous yoga experience who are new to Unity Woods or Iyengar Yoga.
Mixed Levels is for students in Level I/II and up. Modifications will be made according to level and/or need.
Level II classes are for students who have com-pleted the introductory (Level I) course. The basic poses are refined with an emphasis on all the standing poses. Inverted poses (headstand, plow and shoulder stand) are introduced.
Level II/III classes are for students firmly established in their practice and ready to move beyond the basics. Must be able to do a five minute freestanding Sirsasana.
Level III classes are for students with previous Iyengar training who are strong in all the basic poses, can do a ten minute freestanding Sirsasana, and can do Sarvangasana and Halasana with confidence.
Advanced Asana classes are offered periodically and are limited to students who meet the listed prerequisites for each topic.
Course DescriptionsSPECIAL CLASSES Seniors’ Yoga (Bethesda), a gently paced class designed specifically for seniors, approaches asanas in ways that enhance strength, supple-ness and balance.
Back Care (Bethesda), for those with back inju-ries/conditions, focuses on strengthening weak muscles, stretching tight muscles and creating traction in the spine. We correct postural imbal-ances and use breath awareness to reduce stress and pain. Physician approval recommended. Suitable for students with scoliosis.
Yoga with Osteoporosis (Bethesda): come to this fun, challenging, effective class to learn the dos and don’ts of yoga with osteoporosis.
PRANAYAMA (BREATHING)Level I affords those interested in working with the breath an opportunity to move beyond the elementary levels incorporated into regular asana classes. Prerequisite: one year of study and practice of asana in the Iyengar method.
Level II, III and IV classes are for students who have completed the preceding levels.
Level V classes are strictly for students who have completed Level IV or have received extensive Iyengar training in pranayama elsewhere.
Level VI classes are for students who have extensive Iyengar training and have been practicing digital pranayama for two years or more.

I understand that yoga includes physical movements as well as an opportunity for relaxation, stress re-education and relief of muscular tension. As is the case with any physical activity, the risk of injury, even serious or disabling, is always present and cannot be entirely eliminated. If I experience any pain or discomfort, I will listen to my body, adjust the posture and ask for support from the teacher. I will continue to breathe smoothly. Yoga is not a substitute for medical attention, examination, diagnosis or treatment. Certain yoga practices are not recommended and are not safe under certain medical conditions. I affirm that I alone am responsible for deciding whether to practice yoga. I hereby agree to irrevocably release and waive any claims that I have now or hereafter may have against Unity Woods Yoga Center.
