FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
As I was visited this week by my seminarian classmate, Dr. Warren LeSane, I was reminded of the importance of fellowship in a man’s life. In this day and age where being a man who can stand alone is so prevalent, can we, as Men of God, break through that wall and showcase our ability to be brothers to one another? Our theme for Manhood Month is “Men Following God’s Purpose”, and how appropriate to be reminded that our purpose includes serving one another. Men, find your friends, fathers, biological brothers, spiritual brothers, fraternity brothers, cousins, uncles, God fathers…let them know you appreciate them….and their lives have purpose.
Men, this Saturday we are looking for you to join us at the Men’s Fellowship and Cookout at Piney Woods Park, 10:00 a.m. Here is an excellent time for some fun and some of that good fellowship among men of God. Then, on next Sunday we will celebrate in Worship and song at our Annual Men’s Songfest at 4:00 p.m. Our guests include The Ready Singers Choir from Orange Correctional Center and my college buddy and his group, Given, from Greensboro.
This week, we are going to highlight a trio of men from the Bible. In the Old Testament, we find the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. This group of friends also had a specific purpose. Their story gives us many lessons. First, as I mentioned before, friendship and having a band of brothers is important in the life of a male. Next, stand firm on WHO you serve. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were believers of the Lord Most High. They never wavered from this belief, even when things got “hot”. This is a strong message for the men (and women) of God today. We are children of the King….and He keeps us safe. So, when you are in your fiery furnace of life, remember WHOSE you are….and know that you will come out of the fire, not even smelling like smoke! Read about those 3 friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (not a “Big Negro”) in the Old Testament book of Daniel. Never forget that we are AN EXCITING CHURCH EXCITED ABOUT ITS MISSION!
THE DEACON’S MESSAGE
Knowing the truth can make the difference between life and death. Take for example standing on top of a building fifteen stories tall. Someone may tell you if you jump you will only break your leg. The acceleration due to gravity is 9.8 meters per second squared. The combination of the speed of the fall along with the height will result in much more than a broken leg… probably death. It is imperative that we know what truth is or we will be susceptible to any attacks the enemy may launch against us. 2 Peter 3:17-18 (The Message) explains it this way. “But you, friends, are well-warned. Be on guard lest you lose your footing and get swept off your feet by these lawless and loose-talking teachers. Grow in grace and understanding of our Master and Savior, Jesus Christ. Glory to the Master, now and forever! Yes!” Many people have the gift of persuasion and use it to their advantage. That is why we must study the Word so we can know the truth when we hear it. Pursuing the wisdom Christ offers will never lead you astray.
