Having lived in the rural Chisago City areafor 28 years, Ruth Semlak says when the timecame that she was finally able to open a shopof her own, to pursue her passion in antiques,repurposed and vintage goods she also knewthis new adventure would satisfy a growingsensibility that she needed to reconnect withthe community.
Semlak added that she felt quite comfortabletransitioning from working 27 years in corpo-rate America to being a “junker” mostly be-cause her mother, Lucille, had long ago set ashining example. Her mother owned and op-erated her own fabric and antique store, whichher sister and niece now operate as a “Top 10Quilt Shop” in the U.S.
Semlak said she had always pictured herselftaking an early retirement and in 2012 thedoor opened. Her company was re-organizedand the position she held was eliminated.
“On the day of the reorganization (an-nouncement) I started to plan a strategy to ful-fill my junkin’ dream,” said Semlak.She started out selling accumulated finds
from over the years. She tells of once being ina rental car, driving outside of Boston andspotting a pedestal sink with faucets, on theroadside. She loaded it into the vehicle andhad it shipped back to Minnesota.
Semlak cut her sales teeth the last couple ofyears participating at major markets and oc-casional sales, including the Brainerd Lakesarea bi-annual barn sales. “Each venue has introduced me to amaz-
ingly talented and fun loving people, and gen-erated a following of her own. I met andestablished relationships with junkin celebri-ties like Sue Whitney, JunkMarket founder;Lisa Roberts Lockwood Black Oak Designand Gina Bishop (Homegirl) and other tal-ented local women.”
Her favorite television pastime is watching“Picker Sisters.”Lucille’s Vintage Barn Sales is now opening
to the public at 28579 Ivywood Road. Therural Chisago City business is housed in two
quaint buildings that her husband, an architec-tural sheetmetal specialist, constructed justfor this use.
Semlak won’t be alone in her endeavor,there will also be a flower vendor at the barnwith favorites straight from the cutting gar-dens, and cupcakes by Uptown Girl Cupcak-ery.
“Porcupine Creek” is playing bluegrassmusic to set the stage for the opening.Lucille’s Market Barn Sale is welcoming its
