Dave and Caitie were attending a family wedding in Sioux City, Iowa and visiting col- leges in Chicago and Omaha. While in Omaha they at- tended the Olympic trials, watching Missy Franklin, classmate of Caitie, qualify in seven swimming events for the Olympics beginning July 27 in London. • Jacque Riener and Jerry Niemeth teamed up June 30 to help put out a pasture fire. Jacque and Kayla Hughes spotted smoke from a light- ning strike west of Highway 117 north of the state line around 6:40 p.m. Entering the pasture in Nebraska north of the Bob Bobinmyer place they found three yucca plants on fire. Jacque went for shovels and called Cork and Jeff Riener to bring a water tank. Kayla stayed at the highway to flag down the water brigade. After 200 gallons of water, the fire was doused. Ron and Cindy Sattler of Herndon and Bob, Lawson and Matthew Cook of San Carlos, Calif., were Wednes- day morning coffee guests of Bob and Julie Hafner. • Joe and Nadine Green were hosts to a family bar- beque in honor of Wayne and JoAnn Riener of Concord, Calif., and Tom, Julia, Lance and Olivia Riener of Seattle. Also in attendance were Den- nis, Dorsey, Cliff and Shirley Riener of Palisade, Neb.; Cork, Jacque, Jeff and Jessica Riener of Herndon; Calvin and Kayla Hughes of Mc- Cook, Neb.; John, Keri and Barrett Riener of Atwood; Dave Green of Herndon and sisters, Jeannie and Brittany Tuma and Connie and Kylie Reitcheck of Colby. The Seat- tle group arrived directly from Colorado where 12-year old Olivia pitched for her team in the Colorado Sparkler Tournament. The Concord and Seattle family are on the way to a Barenberg family reunion in Indiana. • Herndon residents cele- brated Independence Day without the showy fireworks with the fire burn in place. Enroute to Wisconsin they visited Brandon and Sarah White of Gardner and en- route home they visited Janet Garretson, who oper- ates a pie shop in Stockholm, Wis. She is the wife of the late Tom Garretson, a for- mer pastor of the Herndon Covenant Church. • Lightning struck the farmstead of Richard Fan- ning last week, destroying several outbuildings, but the house and barn were saved. He lives in the former home of Mildred Holmdahl and the late Gene Holmdahl. David and Michael Noren and Bob Reuther spoke during morning wor- ship services on Sunday at the Herndon Covenant Church about their mission trips with Teens For Christ. Rachel Grafel also told about her mission trip to Nepal, which she took with other students from Sterling Col- lege. • Noah Jones, son of Greg and Gwen Jones, is taking National Guard training. President Rob McFee presided at the business meeting. State Representative Ward Cassidy of St. Francis pro- vided an interesting program and spoke of experiences as a newly-elected state represen- tative in Topeka. David Swank reported on the Alzheimer’s garage sale that was held in May in Ober- lin. He reported that $903 in donations were contributed this year to the Alzheimer’s Fund, about $100 more than last year. Ron Katt of Victoria, area 5 vice president, made a presenta- tion of three certificates of award the chapter had received at the NARFE state convention in Salina in April. The awards presented to the chapter were for outstanding contributions to the NARFE Alzheimers pro- gram and an award for the high- est dollar-per-member contribution in the state for Alzheimers. Ron also presented a chapter certificate in recogni- tion of an eight percent total membership gain for 2011-2012. The next NARFE meeting will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 16 near Oberlin at Sappa Park.
